PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

VISION: North Haven Public School, in partnership with our community, promotes and provides a dynamic, future-focused learning environment fostering equity and excellence. Our school will deliver opportunities for every

student to become a successful learner and a caring, confident, creative individual.

Dear North Haven Families What a week! It has been wonderful to welcome our students back to school and their classrooms. Wellbeing will be a focus for our school community as students get back into routines, and reconnect with their friends, peers and teachers. This has been a challenging time for many and we acknowledge that there may be increased anxiety about returning to school. Teachers will also be focused on identifying student progress and assisting those students who need additional help. Last week’s newsletter outlined the organisational details of the managed return to school. This is available through the Skoolbag App and on the North Haven Public School website. If you or your family need any additional support as you return to school, please let us know. We are here to help where we can.

Lost Property The lost property box is again overflowing with unclaimed belongings. There are numerous jumpers, lunch boxes and drink bottles—all without names. We URGE families to please take five minutes this weekend to ensure your child’s belongings are clearly labelled, using a permanent marker. Students may look through lost property for missing belongings before school, at recess, lunchtime and after school (not during class time). The lost property box is located on the balcony near the reading room. Birthday Celebrations at School We have recently had confirmation that, unfortunately food cannot be shared among students, including for birthdays, unless it is individually wrapped. Sorry, no cakes. Other options could include items such as Freddo Frogs or Favourites chocolates if you would like your child to celebrate at school.

NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK 2020 27th May – 3rd June

National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. The dates for NRW remain the same each year. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey — the successful 1967 Referendum (27th May), and the 1992 High Court Mabo decision (3rd June). Much has happened since the early days of the people’s movement for reconciliation, including greater acknowledgement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander rights to land and sea; understanding of the impact of government policies and frontier conflicts; and an embracing of stories of Indigenous success and contribution. On our journey towards reconciliation, Australians are all In This Together; every one of us has a role to play when it comes to building positive relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories and cultures. The theme for #NRW2020 – In This Together – is now resonating in ways that could not have been foreseen when it was announced last year, but it reminds us that in a crisis or in reconciliation, we are indeed #InThisTogether. North Haven Public School is proud to be on the journey towards national reconciliation. Text adapted from https://www.reconciliation.org.au/national-reconciliation-week/ by Mrs Skerritt.
