Big Sir Sez... I cannot believe where the months go. I briefly mentioned it last month but...Summer is basically over (for the kids) but for most of us, it’s time get out of the house and enjoy the tees, fairways and greens (or if you’re like me, the rough and trees). SIR’s DECLARATION All activities arranged for or by, or sponsored by Sons in Retirement, Incorporated, and its Branches, are for the convenience and pleasure of the members and their guests who desire to participate. With Frank moving up to Little SIR we need a Sergeant of Arms. Frank also handled the Profiler duties. These positions are important but require minimum effort. I ask that all of you remember that we are an all-volunteer organization. We rely on fresh ideas and it’s in our best interest to fill these slots. The new officers are looking towards the future with a focus on improving our meeting experience, introducing more amenities and continuing to bring in engaging speakers. This month we have Brian Bigsby from Shasta High. I understand he has been here before but is a welcome encore listening about his Robotics training. And remember… bring a guest!

Lee Lamp, Big SIR

Little SIR Asks… How did you like the layout of our meeting hall last month with activity sign-up stations, book exchange and coffee service located up front? Did you like having some donut holes to go with your coffee? How about the signage or the many new book titles on display? We heard you like these changes. If so please let your officers and

directors know. What else can we do to improve your meeting experience? That is the point…if we make our meetings more fun and more interesting, attendance will go up, members will bring more guests and Branch 129 will start growing again. Speaking of that, can you bring a guest to the upcoming meeting? That is how you can help! The objective is to grow 7% by December 31. To do that, we need to induct 10 new members and keep losses at a minimum, so please bring a friend or neighbor as your guest on September 18, and encourage all guests to join us. Another way to help ourselves is by signing up for activities, buying 50/50 tickets and getting acquainted with each other while we are having coffee and snacks before the meeting starts. Isn’t this why we joined SIR? Of course, so let’s take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to mingle and make new friends. Frank Galusha, Little SIR P.S. Bring a man’s book you’ve enjoyed. We got over100 in August and over 100

were taken.

Guest Speaker for September Shasta High science teacher/robots coming to SIR this month. By Frank Galusha Robots built by students, as directed by Brian Grigsby, 2019 Teacher of the Year at Shasta High, will be our guest this month. Grigsby is currently teaching Space Science and Engineering (robotics) at Shasta High School. “It’s a great class where I get to teach high school kids from around the district (Enterprise and Foothill students are bussed over) as much as I can about robots, space science and career-ready skills for working in an engineering environment,” he said. Grigsby also led his classes in building a microsatellite (a TubeSat) in

‘Project KnightWolf’, a partnership between Shasta College and Shasta High School. He has been instrumental in getting more schools involved in robotics in this region, so students have more hands-on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) study opportunities. One result is a VEX robotics competition at Shasta High School, the “Battle of the North.” Many north state schools have competed since 2016. Grigsby hopes to bring a couple of students to help him demonstrate the latest robots built in his classrooms. He and the students have been invited to mingle with us for coffee and donut holes starting at 10:30 a.m. and to remain after lunch to answer any additional questions we have about robots. Last spring Shasta High Robotics received a nearly $500,000 grant from the California Department of Education (Strong Workforce Program) for new equipment and to provide hands on training on industry level equipment Project REACT (Robotics Engineering, Articulation, Certification and Training). The goal, with Redding School District and Shasta Community College, is to provide a robust continuum for students to move from one level to the next as they build their foundational skills in Robotics, Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing. In naming Grigsby 2019 Teacher of the Year Leo Perez, Principal, Shasta High School, said: "Brian Grigsby is a model teacher. … Shasta County communities face unique challenges when it comes to providing our students access to some of the more innovative and "cutting edge" technologies. Brian has been instrumental in bridging this gap through his many contacts at JPL, NASA, and several major universities across the country.”

18-Hole Golf Report

Did anyone notice how the heat finally hit us this summer in August? At least it waited before really ramping up. That said, the temps up at Mt Shasta were much cooler! We had 30 players head north for a beautiful day of golf. I personally thought the greens were very slow and several of the others mentioned the same thing. All in all though it was a great day! The winners:

The Skins was where the real money was! One man collected it all. Mike Hurley had three eagles that were left uncovered and walked away with the whole pot.

We travelled up to Fall River for the second time this summer. Again, cooler weather but the course was about the same as last month. 30 golfers weathered the traffic. Sure wish I could have played better. The winners:

We also had 5 skins won. Phil Nystrom, eagle #7, Kevin Dempsey, eagle #11, Leroy Bussard, eagle #13,

Ed Grinton, eagle #14, Lyle Wittmayer, eagle #15.

9ers (Nine Hole Golfers)

August had two outings, Gold Hills and Allen's. Due to a SIRs event conflict we only had six sign up for Allen's, but they were a hardy group and fun was had by all. Our next outing is at Gold Hills on Tuesday September 17 and is before our next SIR's meeting so the only way to sign up to play is to email or call me. [email protected], 530-245-0684 Remember the 9 Hole outings are open to your spouse or friend. Invite someone and let's play.

Why this:

Instead of this: State SIR https://www.sirinc.org/ is in the process of repositioning our organization. Our Rooster emblem, or “logo” has been modernized and the name of our organization has been abbreviated to SIR. The words “Sons In Retirement” have been retired in favor of “Social Activities for Men.” The objective is to allow SIR to focus on men age 55 and older as opposed to just those who have retired from work. According to a Merrill-Lynch survey in 2019, most men not yet retired envision working in some capacity – often in a new field in their later years. Our Mission is: To enhance the lives of our members through fun activities, events and luncheons while making Friends for Life. Note, the use of the word “enhance” as opposed to “improve.” Our Vision is: To become the best active men’s organization in Northern and Central California by improving longevity through providing opportunities for physical, mental and social engagement. Summary: We joined SIR to engage in fun activities and to Make Friends for Life. Now, in addition to that objective, SIR will also be dedicated to helping us Live Longer by keeping us physically, mentally and socially engaged.

You can help us enhance your experience and improve your life by coming to our luncheons and signing up

for activities -- or by suggesting new activities.

Computer Users

A few of us met at the computer meeting last month to discuss photography as a subject. We seem to have some general interest such as field trips, photo editing, camera usage, etc. Since we have interests at all levels, we discussed how we could develop this group in a way that the majority would participate. We are still sorting this out and would welcome comments from others to help develop this group interest. If you have any ideas or thoughts, come to the computer meeting after the general meeting to share your ideas. Join us after the general meeting for tips and tricks on your computer.

Harry Tully’s celebration of life at the Elk’s Club was well attended. He not only was very active in SIR’s but other organizations as well which spoke well of his character. We’ll miss him. As summer is coming to an end, this quote from Jim Rohn is appropriate: “Time is more value than money. The badge number that wins a free lunch in September is 131. You can get more money, but you cannot get more time”. So take advantage of that time and enjoy! Len Napoli – Sunshine Chairman
