Big SIR - Ed Puchi (916) 988-1331

I sincerely hope you all had a great fourth of

July, celebrating this great country's Birth-

day. Saying a thanks to our Military for keep-

ing us safe, and a prayer for those who made the ultimate

sacrifice. For those of you who missed Teny Christman,

our speaker for June. He was something. Funny, informa-

tive and Included his four World Series rings for us to

admire. Our speaker for July will be Doug Bertsch, who

will tell us the pros and cons of reverse Mortgage. If I

don't see you on the Golf course, see you on July 26th at

lunch.

Cheers, Jerry Helmey - Little Sir

We discussed a number of important items

during our June meeting of the BEC. Two

items of very significant concern relate to our

membership and our monthly meetings. 1st - our member-

ship in Branch 49 is shrinking. This should alerts us all

that we must do a better job of promoting SIR and

Branch 49 activities to all our retired friends. 2nd, we

still have a few members that have not paid their $5.00

dues for 2018. The Branch is required and has paid the

dues assessed by the State SIR for every member of

Branch 49. Branch 49 fully expects each member to carry

his weight and take care of this obligation. I hope you all

received the email from the SIR State office with the

video regarding the 4 actions expected of SIR members:

1. Be sociable - we all do that by attending our monthly

meetings and the holiday party.

2. Be active in the SIR activities, whether it be golf,

bowling, fishing, etc.

3. Volunteer-Branch 49 needs volunteers to help in run-

ning the Branch operations and activities month after

month. Speaking of volunteers, Karl Ryden has served

as the Branch 49 purveyor for the last number of

years. He has advised that this will be his last year in

that position. The BEC thanks Karl for his many years

of service to Branch 49 carrying that responsibility

and commends him on a job well done. We have re-

ceived many compliments from our many guests re-

garding the quality of our lunches. So, we need some-

one to volunteer to take on this important role. If you

are interested, please contact me or Karl as soon as

possible, so we can have a smooth transition into this

important function.

4. Bring guests. If we each invite two guests during the

year and one out of every ten guests join SIR, we will

maintain and increase our membership.

Little Sir Jerry Helmey will be running the July meeting in

my absence, so I will see you all in August.

Piscis Australid meteor shower

The Piscis Australid meteor shower will reach its maxi-

mum rate of activity on 31 July 2018. Some shooting

stars associated with the shower are expected to be

visible each night from 15 July to 20 August.

Annual meteor showers arise when the Earth passes

through streams of debris left behind by comets and

asteroids. As pebble-sized pieces of debris collide with

the Earth, they burn up at an altitude of around 70 to

100 km, appearing as shooting stars.

By determining the speed and direction at which the me-

teors impact the Earth, it is possible to work out the

path of the stream through the Solar System and iden-

tify the body responsible for creating it. To date, how-

ever, the parent body responsible for creating the

Piscis Australid shower has not been identified.
