IN MEMORY Sadly, there were two members of Branch 46 who passed away recently. Sir Carl Leach died on April 6. Carl was a long time member of SIR having joined Branch 46 in 2001. Sir Bob Patterson died in April and was also a long time member of SIR, having joined the branch in 2003. Our heartfelt sympathy and condolences go out to Carl and Bob’s family and friends at this sad time in their lives.

Bring a Friend, Win a Prize When you bring a friend (prospective new member) to a Branch 46 lunch meeting, you will receive FREE five 50-50 tickets. Good luck! ALSO, if your friend happens to join, then you will receive a free lunch.

Bucket Brigade

(again)

In last month’s bulletin, in the discussion of the Branch cash flow problem, we incorrectly stated that the State assessment for each branch is $1.25/member/month. This is wrong. The actual assessment is $1.25/member/quarter. While this reduces the yearly total and the resulting assessment figures that were reported, it does not change our cash flow problem. As we said before, our assessment is based on total members, not just those attending meetings. Since Branch 46 attendance is hovering around 50%, members attending and, therefore, contributing to the Bucket Brigade represent only half of the members used in the State assessment. Another way of looking at this is if Branch 46 charged monthly dues (as some branches do) then only half of us would be paying.

We Requested - - - - -You Responded! At the April luncheon the average Bucket Brigade donation was $3.23/member. This is a significant increase over the member average of $2.32 for the first two months of the year. If we can keep the Bucket Brigade donations at this level or greater, AND those who miss a meeting contribute an extra amount at the next luncheon, then we’ll be on our way to significantly improving the financial health of our branch.

Please pay your “dues”! Support your local Bucket Brigade!

Biography of Sir Duke Wilkinson

Our newest SIRS member Duke Wilkinson was born March 23, 1944 at Dameron Hospital in Stockton. His

father, Owen Eugene Wilkinson was a grain merchant, working for the E. D. Wilkinson Grain Company which was

founded by his father Eugene Denslow Wilkinson. Both Duke’s dad and his mother Bonnie May Inglis were born in

Stockton and had two children, Duke and his sister Bonnie.

Duke attended Stagg High School, graduating in June 1962. During his teenage years he worked as a

“Sample Boy” for his dad: He had to weigh each bushel of grain, grade it and then store it. Duke then attended

Menlo College in Menlo Park, Ca., majoring in Business; from there he transferred to the University of Southern

California, earning his B.A. degree in 1966 and, two years later, his Master’s degree in Business Administration.

Upon graduation, Duke went back to work in his father’s business, getting involved in computerizing all the

record and bookkeeping systems for E. D. Wilkinson Grain Co. This involved complete computerization of sales,

inventory, purchasing procedures, financial statements and everything in between. In the mid-nineties his dad got

ready to retire and Duke took over as President of the company. This required him to supervise the grain buyers and

occasionally joining them in negotiating the purchase of grain from the farmers in the S.J. County area. The

company also had offices in Fresno and Tulare, and stored the grain in a large warehouse named Delta Warehouse in

the 800 block of West Weber Avenue. The grain was ultimately sold to various types of clients, such as chicken

farmers (e.g. Foster Farms), egg producers and beef cattle farmers.

Duke married Suzy Meggers in the fall of 1977, and they have five children (Brian, Susan, John, Chris and

Laura); they now have eight grandchildren – two in Los Angeles, one in Sacramento and four in Stockton.

In 1997 they closed the grain business and Duke went to work for AT&T as

manager of seven contract companies which supplied technicians that installed

DSL high speed internet in customer’s homes. Ten years later, in 1207, Duke was

offered a “golden hand shake” and retired.

In retirement, Duke enjoys his hobby, i.e. rebuilding classic cars. At present

he is working on a 1916 Maxwell Touring car, and whenever he drives to Southern

California to visit his grandchildren, people turn their heads and admire his

beautiful white 1955 Thunderbird. He and Suzy enjoy playing bridge and several

months ago Sir Vaughn Pipes introduced Duke to SIRS and then sponsored him to

join our chapter in March. Duke is looking forward to being a new SIRS member

and to make new friends in this interesting group.
