After our UC&C Summit in Amsterdam, several of us headed over to the ISE show at the RAI Center. ISE, co-owned by the same people who run InfoComm in the U.S., is a huge AV show filling an enormous maze of exhibit halls, corridors, side rooms, and random meeting places guaranteed to give even the most enthusiastic attendee sore legs and Dutch pyrexia. {Editor note: Andrew likes to use big words, in this case fever.} ISE management conveniently had designated Hall 12 to be the “Collaboration Hall,” an overheated cavern that hosted 31 of our favorite solution providers.

While Hall 12 was impressively crowded, the buzz this year was that there was no buzz. New product and service announcements were relatively rare, and many of the booths were showing products that had been introduced earlier. Most of the vendors, when queried privately, admitted that 2012 was a down year as customers had held back due to the great political and economic uncertainties. They indicated they expect business growth to resume this year.

This is not to say that there weren’t some exciting announcements at ISE. Avaya-Radvision was showing two new products. The Scopia Elite 6000 MCU is a brand new video bridge featuring slick new 1U packaging, lower cost, and higher performance at the same time. Intel’s latest Sandy Bridge technology and an industry-standard server. And just as your industry-standard PC might offload graphics processing to a hardware accelerator, the Elite 6000 core logic is all software and audio-video processing is offloaded to a DSP accelerator — perhaps we should call this a “hybrid.” The Elite 6000 features support for H.264 High Profile, H.264 SVC, and 1080p60 resolution. One of the key features sure to interest service providers and/or enterprises considering mobile deployment support via premises-based equipment is the port density — 80 ports of 720p30 or 40 ports of 1080p30/720p60 in a single 1U chassis — saving rack space and power consumption. The LifeSize booth was packed. And it wasn’t just because the new Logitech CEO Bracken Darrell, just after recording a $211M non-cash write down of his LifeSize assets, told Reuters that he was thinking of selling off LifeSize. (Logitech acquired LifeSize in 2009 for $405M). No, it wasn’t. The product buzz in the LifeSize ISE booth was around a new endpoint line dubbed the Icon Series, which we mentioned last issue. The story is best summed up with a look at the handheld remote that supports an ease-of-use story unlike that of any other room system. Imagine a one-button remote! Icon products are designed to be used with the company’s UVC platform solutions. The endpoint shown at ISE (MSRP of $2,999) supports 720p60 and includes a 4x PTZ camera. Add another $1K for a 10x PTZ camera. Icon Summary: super simple and price competitive.

Sony, one the big guys in professional audio and video, had its typical enormous booth in Hall 1, this year focused on display technologies and solutions for education markets. Not completely hidden in the back of the booth was the new, yet-unannounced PCS-XG100. This will be Sony’s new high end, 1080p60 system (1080p30 for dual streams), sporting an impressive array of connectors on the back of the codec. A software option can add a 9-way H.323 embedded bridge; two bridges can be cascaded to reach 16 endpoints.

More details are to follow, along with an update on Sony’s video infrastructure line (including

software MCU, recording server, and NAT-firewall traversal), meant to give the company an end-to-end story to tell. Go-to-market strategies are evolving, with CeeLab playing the role of an OEM in Europe for the last few years. Meanwhile, Stampede acquired SpireGlobal and took over the North American master distributor role.

StarLeaf drew a lot of attention with this innovative company’s move to address customers’ interest in “cloud-based” services for video conferencing. Recognizing that many customers, especially SMB customers, don’t want to invest in video infrastructure, StarLeaf is now offering access

to all of its infrastructure products as a service, rather than as a set of products. StarLeaf Call complements StarLeaf’s ease of use story, based on a common user interface

across multiple hardware and software endpoints, including Breeze, the client that runs on desktop and mobile devices. With StarLeaf Call, a user takes delivery of his endpoint, plugs it into the network and enters a 12-digit identification code. This QuickConnect code verifies the user account, automatically configures the endpoint, populates the corporate directory, and provides the connection to StarLeaf Call. The user is immediately ready to video call or conference anyone on any StarLeaf or standards-based (H.323 / SIP) video equipment or software. Ongoing management is conducted via the StarLeaf Call portal, a simple browser-based tool that keeps the user’s admin in control of all additions, changes and deletions from the service. The Call service complements the company’s line of mobile, desktop, and room video and voice conferencing systems. We also learned that StarLeaf Breeze, the company’s software client, is coming out of beta testing. Breeze costs $39/month per user and users can run the software on multiple desktop and mobile devices (Windows, MacOS, iOS). Running on StarLeaf’s infrastructure service, Breeze interoperates with standards-based systems, and supports far end camera control and content sharing.

Surf Communications Solutions showed off its Orion MCU, an open, SIP-based voice and video bridge

contained in a packaged box designed for the SME customer or as a really small single board (5 ports of HD to 20 ports of CIF) designed to be integrated into other products such as telephony systems,

gateways, or multimedia servers. The 40-person Israeli company has been in the business of making multimedia DSP resource processing boards since 1996.

Other ISE notables:

AVI-SPL was there in force, with a cadre of executives, including many from the newly expanded UK team, intended to show attendees that the company is serious about penetrating Europe. The Barco booth was a real mob scene; we could hardly get in to see the demo of ClickShare, a new solution for screen sharing in local

meetings. Norway-based CeeLab introduced two new HD systems, both supporting 1080p60 on dual streams as well as HD-720p recording on a USB stick. One of the systems includes a 9-way embedded MCU.

The Cisco booth was focused on the company’s total collaboration and visual communications (digital signage etc.) portfolio, not all of which was shipping new product. Several members of the WR team thought the Jabber video conferencing demo was unabashedly impressive. The software solution is now “feature stable,” a new term to yours truly. Jabber uses the same UI across multiple devices and easily mixes IM, presence, voice, and video in one slick display.

Vaddio highlighted the company’s broad line of USB cameras for video conferencing and other visual communication applications. Little-known and Internet-shy Virtual Meeting Corporation International (VMCI.net) was demoing its video software client, which is available in client-client and client-server flavors. The company markets almost exclusively through OEMs, so you may be using their software already without knowing it. The demo showed 1080p30 at 2 Mbps using just 17% of an i7 processor. The company also offers a software MCU. ZTE demo’d both hardware and software endpoints for video conferencing. The company remains one of the only video vendors to offer a conferencing system in a traditional set-top box configuration.

News in Brief• As Microsoft’s Lync Conference 2013 was getting

underway in San Diego, Berlin-based snom technology AG announced that its UC Edition IP business phones have been qualified by Microsoft as fully interoperable with Microsoft Lync Server 2013. Our peripatetic Bill Haskins spoke at and attended the event, and we’ll have a full story about what was announced in San Diego (items from a variety of video and other types of vendors) in the next issue of the Bulletin. Just out yesterday over the press wire: Blue Jeans Network has announced the availability of bi-directional HD desktop sharing for Microsoft Lync users, enabling them to share desktop content with Cisco, Polycom, Skype, Google Video Chat, and other users / endpoints.

• Hoping enterprises will reach into their proverbial wallets for a high-end video camera, Logitech introduced its Webcam C930e. Among its innovative features are H.264 encoding taking place within the camera itself — truly a unique feature — plus an extra-wide, 90-degree field of view, support for the H.264 SVC and UVC 1.5 video encoding standards, and high-definition digital pan-tilt-zoom. The company claims that the full 1080p webcam reportedly offers the widest field of view available in a desktop webcam for business, making it possible to show a full whiteboard on an office wall during a brainstorming session without getting “fish eye” distortion that often detracts from wide-angle images. Optimized for Microsoft Lync (pay attention, Lync users, as Logitech is marketing this like crazy), and compatible with most other UC and video conferencing applications, the C930e provides a digital PTZ feature that maintains an HD image at up to 4X magnification. Ready to run on Windows 7, Windows 8 and Mac OS X 10.7 or higher devices, the C930e is expected to be available worldwide in May 2013 for a suggested price of $109.99.

• The join.me freemium web conferencing service has added annotation for hosts and viewers, including simultaneous annotation.

• Citrix announced last week that it has deepened its support for mobile collaboration, in three major areas of interest to our readers. The company added GoToMeeting for Windows RT and Android to enable users to join or launch meetings from these devices, Podio for BlackBerry Z10 to enable project management on this mobile platform, and ShareFile for Windows 8 and Android, enabling this file sharing service to work with Windows 8 tablets and PC’s. Additionally, this ShareFile service release includes passcode support with local encryption and jailbreak detection on Android devices. Finally, Podio has some new real-time communications features added recently, including real-time app comments as they are posted, visibility into who is viewing the

same apps as you, and the ability to like comments anywhere within Podio.

• InteSolv, an online business solutions firm, has released a free version of its Connect Passport, a mobile app designed to support the use of Adobe Connect. Using Connect Passport a user can simply enter their Adobe Connect login credentials once and gain single click access to all of their meetings and content. Connect Passport is available for both iOS and Android mobile devices. The free version contains third party advertisements. An ad-free version is also available for $1.99.

• Post TEAM Polycom 2013 reseller conference, vari-ous announcements have been made regarding who has done well by Polycom in the past year. 8x8 was named Polycom Partner of the Year. Polycom named its First App Developer Contest award winners: X20 Media, Proton Media, and VQ Communications. And ScanSource Communications was named Polycom North America Distributor of the Year. Scan-Source also announced just yesterday that it is now Polycom’s first North American Authorized Training Partner — perhaps responding to the emphasis Cisco has placed on training partners and renewing focus on training as a method of going to market.

• A few weeks ago AV Impact, a large audio visual integrator in the UK, announced it has merged its AV Global Alliance Program with the Global Presence Alliance (GPA), an alliance of audiovisual, video

Wainhouse Research’s Marc Beattie recently visited with Alan Levy of Cinchcast — a company clearly named because it believes casting “something” should be a “cinch” — we’ll let him tell us what. Alan has founded multiple telecommunications companies. He was Presi-dent and COO of most notably Destia Communications, building Destia into a global telecom enterprise with operations and customers in 10 countries and more than $350 million in annual revenue. Destia went public in May 1999 and was then acquired in December 1999 by Viatel in a transaction valued in excess of $1 billion.

WR: Many people may not be familiar with Cinchcast. Can you explain who you are and how you came into being?

AL: Cinchcast provides cloud-based conferencing and webcasting solutions to the enterprise. Our focus is on DIY (do-it-yourself) events. Our company’s mission is simple: to make it easier and more cost effective for companies to connect and communicate with the people who are most important to their business.

We saw a huge opportunity to help organizations significantly improve their conference calls and event-based communications, leveraging a platform that seamlessly integrates the conference bridge and online streaming technology.

For the a fraction of the cost of traditional operator-managed conference calls and webcasts, we power a broad range of corporate communications events, including staff / all-hands meetings, town halls, investor relations calls, and marketing webinars and webcasts. We are headquartered in New York City.

WR: The CSP operator-attended audio and web conferencing market seems stalled and the webcasting market seems divided up by too many providers. Obviously you see opportunity for events. Has the demand for online events shifted and the legacy market is just not offering what the market wants?

AL: This is an industry that has not seen a tremendous amount of innovation through the years. We have talked with countless communications professionals around the globe and have uncovered a wide range of opportunities for improvement at all stages of the event management and production process.

Users are looking for more control, more flexibility, an improved participant experience, enhanced reliability and security, simplified pricing models and reduced costs. Our audio conferencing and webcasting platform streamlines and simplifies communications and gives enterprise customers more control over their event experience and event-related expenses. With the click of a button, users are up and running with everything they

events, including quarterly earnings calls, will require some level of social integration.

WR: Besides cost, what were are the business challenges you set out to solve with Cinchcast?

AL: Cinchcast Connect helps advance enterprise communications on several fronts. It streamlines and simplifies the process of scheduling, managing, publishing, and reporting, putting more control back in the hands of the user. Unlike traditional operator-managed events, enterprise customers are able to easily self-provision and manage conference calls, webcasts, and virtual events from a streamlined management console. With one click customers are able to launch events for ten or ten thousand participants. In addition, by making it easier for employees, partners, customers, or prospects to participate and interact in events, Cinchcast Connect helps enterprise customers maximize attendance and engagement. Cinchcast offers multiple options for live participation and on-demand consumption. And event entry is simple and without hold times using Connect’s Universal PIN Code access.

WR: Many technologies and corporate behaviors have gone to DIY. Do you think the market is ready to embrace DIY for high profile events such as earnings calls?

AL: I think that the market is very open to changing the way it does things because of the challenges and high price tags they are facing with traditional providers. I also think that the widespread adoption of cloud-based technologies across the enterprise has helped to support this.

But the change is not one that happens or needs to happen overnight. Our platform is DIY in two ways: you can schedule, manage, publish, and report on your events on your own, and you have the option to moderate

call-in participants on your own, which we all know can be very costly. We typically see our clients get started by leveraging our platform with our fully-managed event services. This still provides them with cost-savings benefits and the enhanced experience our platform

need to host and manage their event. Event registration, the conference bridge, phone-based Q&A management console, slides, and the online event stream; it’s all integrated into one robust, browser-based solution.

WR: How much do you think the economy and resulting company initiatives drive the opportunity for your business?

AL: I think the current economic climate is a big driver. Companies today are looking to increase efficiencies and cut costs anywhere they can. Our solution provides a compelling business case for these organizations. Today we are helping some of the biggest companies in the world save time and enhance their event experience, while significantly reducing their virtual event and conferencing expenses.

WR: How important is the inclusion of social media and mobile to the new events market? How does Cinchcast facilitate this participation?

AL: I think mobile is a critical component of today’s events. In our ever-connected world, event producers need to make it easy for their audience to participate in events and consume content wherever they are and whatever device they are on. Cinchcast Connect facilitates this by providing multiple ways to join the event on the phone, online, or on any mobile device. Our platform is fully iOS- and HTML5-compliant.

Cinchcast Connect embeddable players also enable companies to stream content within any corporate web environment in front of or behind the firewall. And to further remove barriers to participation and increase security, our platform does not require downloads by the event participants, unlike other applications that require a Java plug-in.

When it comes to external communications, I think social media is a highly effective way for event producers to increase the reach of and engagement at their events. To help companies take advantage of this opportunity, our platform features one-click social syndication to Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and iTunes. I think it’s inevitable that more and more corporate

I think it’s inevitable that more and more corporate events, including quarterly earnings calls, will require some level of social integration.
