News & Views on Unified Communications & Collaboration PAGE 1 With little fanfare, Cisco has announced a first-ever, premises-based, inside-the-firewall version of the industry-leading WebEx web conferencing platform: the Cisco WebEx Meetings Server, while Citrix introduced an enhanced iPad app for GoToMeeting. The Citrix announcement was made at the company’s Synergy end user event in Barcelona last week. Designed to extend the ease and convenience of GoToMeeting for Apple devices, mobile workers can now launch instant or pre-scheduled meetings from their iPhone or iPad. The new GoToMeeting for iPad app also adds the ability to present content from multiple cloud storage systems — including Citrix ShareFile and Dropbox — through native integrations and the built-in web browser. Some of the features apply only to the iPad, while others are supported on both iPads and iPhones. Users can launch a meeting and invite attendees with a few onscreen taps and change presenter so another person can show his / her screen (iPad & iPhone). On the iPad only, users can present content by simply browsing to it or opening email attachments, can share content from ShareFile or Dropbox during a meeting, and can brainstorm with an onscreen highlighter and whiteboard. The WebEx announcement came at last week’s Cisco Collaboration Analyst and Consultant Summit in Los Angeles. The company that established itself as an early visionary in hosted services, WebEx, has taken its SaaS solution and produced a highly secure, fully- virtualized premises-based conferencing solution that combines audio, video, and web conferencing. Cisco WebEx Meetings Server is a software-based solution that runs on Cisco UCS x86 Servers and VMware 5.0. The solution uses the VMware virtual appliance technology for rapid deployment of services to users, and provides two options for helping users to securely access WebEx conferences without going through a VPN: customers can deploy reverse proxy (edge servers) in the enterprise perimeter (aka DMZ), or deploy reverse proxy (edge servers) behind their internal firewalls, thereby eliminating all DMZ components and related security concerns that come with placing servers in the DMZ. With little fanfare Cisco has announced a first-ever premises-based inside-the-firewall version of the industry-leading WebEx web conferencing platform the Cisco WebEx Meetings Server while Citrix introduced an enhanced iPad app for GoToMeeting

The Citrix announcement was made at the companyrsquos Synergy end user event in Barcelona last week Designed to extend the ease and convenience of GoToMeeting for Apple devices mobile workers can now launch instant or pre-scheduled meetings from their iPhone or iPad

The new GoToMeeting for iPad app also adds the ability to present content from multiple cloud storage systems mdash including Citrix ShareFile and Dropbox mdash through native integrations and the built-in web browser Some of the features apply only to the iPad while others are supported on both iPads and iPhones Users can launch a meeting and invite attendees with a few onscreen taps and change presenter so another person can show his her screen (iPad amp iPhone) On the iPad only users can

present content by simply browsing to it or opening email attachments can share content from ShareFile or Dropbox during a meeting and can brainstorm with an onscreen highlighter and whiteboard

deployments in the WR Bulletin Volume 13 Issue 20) So maybe the cloud will remain high on the hype cycle for the foreseeable future but even so ldquotherersquos gold in them thar firewallsrdquo and Cisco wisely recognizes itrsquos a market to go after

News in BriefVideo Conferencingbull Huawei has upgraded the configuration

and conference management capabili-ties for its RP series room telepresence systems and now features an Android-based tablet to achieve wireless touch control From the tablet users can be given control over the entire conference process They can initiate conferences control cameras manage chair control

rights switch between mul-tiple presenta-tion modes configure settings and customize the conference control screen If they are given chair control rights they also can enable voice-activated switching by speaker or by site to ensure that the video of the speaker is always on screen The

tablet also enables users to add sites extend confer-ences and perform other functions

bull Vidyo announced this week a new executive desktop system that will offer up to 1080p30 encode and 1440p60 decode for the bargain basement price of $750 The company also is demonstrating its next generation scalable HEVC (H265) codec design that will show the benefits of HEVC requiring half the bit rate of H264 SVC to achieve the same or better quality at 1080p60 This should translate to higher

on Ports 80 (HTTP) and 443 (SSL) helps minimize the number of ports that need to be opened in external and internal firewalls The solution does require Cisco Unified Communications Manager (UCM) (release 71 or greater) for SIP trunk audio conferencing With security as the goal the platform uses industry-standard SSL 30 and 128- or 256-bit AES Encryption and supports United States Department of Defense grade FIPS 140-2 Level 1 encryption What Andy and Alan think We live in interesting times We say this without irony but instead with the pleasure of watching a technology wersquove covered for years continue to morph to address end user and security-minded enterprise needs and concerns First we tackle Citrix While not the first to enable presentation of content from a mobile device (read Adobe Connect and SMARTrsquos Bridgit were there first) Citrix has taken a leap forward by making the idea of screen sharing so old school the idea of sharing from the cloud the new school of thinking The ability to pull content from the cloud via a ShareFile or Dropbox folder natively opens up a tremendous set of opportunities for spontaneously collaborating with others sharing any content one has stored mdash not just pre-planned file uploads to a central server And it truly breaks the mold of ldquoshare-my-screenrdquo working and opens up the model of ldquoshare-any-contentrdquo collaborating While in theory other web conferencing products may let users access files through integration efforts that are one-off the native capability contained in the iPad app is what the ldquogotchardquo here is

We debated internally what we think is bigger here the Citrix announcement (Andy) or the WebEx announcement (Alan) Even as the world hypes the cloud (analysts press consultants and service providers) WebEx sees big opportunity in what must have been a non-trivial task ldquoproductizingrdquo a service in a way that allowed it to put the product into customer hands Customers can break things as we all know so well and Cisco will be losing some control over how customers deploy and over the ultimate user experience But the move is big because government military financial services and even some healthcare pharmaceutical organizations absolutely require inside-the-firewall conferencing technologies with absolutely high-level security Cisco even positions its product as ldquoa web conferencing solution for private cloudsrdquo Adobe has chewed up the competition in this arena particularly in governmental Department of Defense deployments (we mentioned a recent Adobe case study on DOD

quality video conferences over narrow bandwidth networks Other announcements include a web browser-based ldquotelepresence-quality experiencerdquo (their words not ours) that will support video calls with Skype Facebook Google Talk and other business video applications and a multi-protocol media server that supports H264 AVC H264 SVC H263 H323 and SIP A virtualized version for VMware environments mdash meant to support cloud-based deployments mdash reportedly will ship in Q1 2013 Our colleague Ira Weinstein will be weighing in on these announcements and other matters of importance in an upcoming research note for Group Video Conferencing subscribers

bull And continuing with the sudden commoditization of video conferencing Best Buy indicates it is bringing out its own Android-based tablet the Insignia Flex The tablet reportedly will include the Android 40 ICS a dual-core 1GHz processor and a 97-inch screen and offer a ten hour battery life It will also have a front facing camera for video conferencing and weight about 145 pounds same weight as the Apple iPad We suspect therersquos an app for that

bull Meanwhile we note from a Microsoft blogpost that Lync 2013 will contain video conferencing with a gallery view which will include a video preview function for use before going live the ability to manage that gallery view (promote participants from the ldquositting rowrdquo to the ldquostanding rowrdquo) and other icons and notifications designed to help users further understand whatrsquos going on and who is up to what Presenters can ensure that only other presenters can share their video via a ldquoNo Attendee Videordquo action tab

In his nearly seven years at the helm of Ignite Technolo-gies Jim Janicki has transformed his company from being a peer-to-peer solution for shuttling data-intensive high-quality video behind the corporate firewall into a supplier of a robust set of hosted offerings used to create manage and distribute live and on-demand streaming content In a video conversation with WR Senior Analyst Steve Vonder Haar Janicki discusses the future of en-terprise streaming the prospects for mobile video and the efforts to blend the worlds of online video and more traditional forms of video conferencing

WR Ignite Technologies is best known as a supplier of peer-to-peer networking solutions that enable more efficient distribution of online video behind the corporate firewall but you have expanded the scope of your product line during the last year Tell us a little about that

JJ In the last couple of years wersquove come out with a live product that allows us to deliver live events inside the firewall Wersquove done a live event as large as 32000 people on a corporate network with no additional infrastructure required We actually launched a portal product recently so we now have the ability to do what you would commonly refer to as ldquoYouTube for the Enterpriserdquo We also have the ability to do content to tablets so we actually support iPads and Android tablets Our thing is content on any device anywhere any time

WR As your product line expands what are your hopes or aspirations for making Ignite more relevant in the field of traditional video conferencing

JJ Itrsquos not traditional video conferencing the way we look at it mdash where yoursquore in a room and Irsquom in a room

and wersquore both sitting there talking to each other Rather itrsquos about using your video conferencing equipment as a source or capture device for live events Picture a CEO walking into his Polycom room or his Cisco telepresence room and think about the equipment thatrsquos in there good camera good lighting good microphone Ready to go Take that as your capture device and put it to an Ignite stream server and you can actually do broadcasts to your entire corporation from that device You donrsquot need a separate studio Just use what you have

WR You talk about capitalizing on the legacy invest-ments that corporations have made in video Despite big budgets not all organizations have fully leveraged the

video capabilities that they have deployed Why has it taken so long for enterprise streaming to catch fire or gain traction with corporate end users

JJ For a lot of reasons A lot of companies tried to do streaming before and failed just because of the impact on the network In the consumer world itrsquos actually fairly straightforward I have lots of different endpoints and lots of different bandwidth connections But once I try to do it to inside the

enterprise I tend to run into problems in the network A lot of times we run into folks who are coming back into the market after a failed outing Before their network guys didnrsquot want them to do streaming mdash traditional streaming was not really what they wanted to do But technology has improved to the point where the network guys are getting more comfortable with it I think the pressure to have the ability to do content like video inside the enterprise has built to the point where itrsquos almost become a necessity So I think it has just evolved into its time

Wersquove done a live event as large as 32000 people on a corporate network with no additional infrastructure required

WR One of the factors that we see driving greater interest in enterprise streaming is the ability to consume this content on mobile devices mdash tablet devices and smartphones Tell us about Ignitersquos efforts in the mobile arena

JJ We have the ability to do content delivery to an iPad or Android device And now with our portal product we can do it through the portal as well as through a native app In our next release of that app we will support live streaming to that tablet We do see more and more companies em-bracing tablets if you will I think theyrsquore your non-power users mdash people mostly doing e-mail and things like that Itrsquos so much easier on a tablet than to go to a desktop Look how many times have you gotten on an airplane recently where everybody on the plane has a tablet Nobody is carrying a laptop I think we really have to move with that The trend is to move towards those so we have to make all types of content available on those devices

WR Even with this interest is the idea of streaming to mobile devices something thatrsquos ready for prime time in the corporate sector

JJ Yes and no I think yoursquore going to see some problems with it if yoursquore not careful Think about a wireless access point (WAP) that has X amount of bandwidth available to it When you stream to a wireless device there is no peer-ing And if I did peer it would make no difference because I would receive a stream and send a stream so essentially I would use twice as much bandwidth So I think as cor-porations roll these out mdash if they want to do live stream-ing mdash theyrsquore going to have to be cognizant of how many people are connected to any single one access point because thatrsquos really where the problem is going to be Itrsquos not going to flood the WAN Itrsquos not going to do anything else Itrsquos just going to be too many endpoints connecting to a single WAP When I talk to our customer base theyrsquore aware of the problem and theyrsquore actually beefing up their wireless access points because of the bandwidth

requirements that they want to put to those tablets

WR What do you see for the future of enterprise streaming over the next five years

JJ I think streaming grows and when we say streaming I donrsquot really mean streaming mdash I mean the consumption of video in the enterprise will continue to grow I think yoursquore going to see more integrations with things that are already common platforms Yoursquore already seeing a lot of people using it with for example SharePoint I want to be able to use SharePoint to do collaboration I want to be able to use SharePoint for what we used to call an Intranet Making that part of your delivery platform if you will or your site for video I think you will see much more integration with applications like that

I believe yoursquore going to see a lot more movement in tools that enable desktop publishing Today itrsquos still sort of rudimentary People have to know too much about encoders and cameras and microphones and I think yoursquore going to see much more happening on that capture end Seamless workflows are the future It has to be a seamless workflow If yoursquore going to get to the point where end users are going to publish content it has to be really simple and it has to be a straightforward workflow thatrsquos going from capture to delivery to viewing All of that needs to happen very seamlessly So I think yoursquore going to see a lot of movement in that space

and conference management capabili-ties for its RP series room telepresence systems and now features an Android-based tablet to achieve wireless touch control From the tablet users can be given control over the entire conference process They can initiate conferences control cameras manage chair control

bull Vidyo announced this week a new executive desktop system that will offer up to 1080p30 encode and 1440p60 decode for the bargain basement price of $750 The company also is demonstrating its next generation scalable HEVC (H265) codec design that will show the benefits of HEVC requiring half the bit rate of H264 SVC to achieve the same or better quality at 1080p60 This should translate to higher

on Ports 80 (HTTP) and 443 (SSL) helps minimize the number of ports that need to be opened in external and internal firewalls The solution does require Cisco Unified Communications Manager (UCM) (release 71 or greater) for SIP trunk audio conferencing With security as the goal the platform uses industry-standard SSL 30 and 128- or 256-bit AES Encryption and supports United States Department of Defense grade FIPS 140-2 Level 1 encryption What Andy and Alan think We live in interesting times We say this without irony but instead with the pleasure of watching a technology wersquove covered for years continue to morph to address end user and security-minded enterprise needs and concerns First we tackle Citrix While not the first to enable presentation of content from a mobile device (read Adobe Connect and SMARTrsquos Bridgit were there first) Citrix has taken a leap forward by making the idea of screen sharing so old school the idea of sharing from the cloud the new school of thinking The ability to pull content from the cloud via a ShareFile or Dropbox folder natively opens up a tremendous set of opportunities for spontaneously collaborating with others sharing any content one has stored mdash not just pre-planned file uploads to a central server And it truly breaks the mold of ldquoshare-my-screenrdquo working and opens up the model of ldquoshare-any-contentrdquo collaborating While in theory other web conferencing products may let users access files through integration efforts that are one-off the native capability contained in the iPad app is what the ldquogotchardquo here is
