Topic
‘Abracadabra’
‘Alakazamakazoo’ This week our theme has
been Magic!
‘Who makes magic and uses spells?’ Some of
the responses we received were; Wizards,
Witches, Fairies, Magicians and our Dads!
We investigated magic lamps: how they work
and what they do? We discussed whether or
not genies really live in lamps.
We looked at spells and even made
our own class cauldron. We had lots of
fun getting messy making spells and
potions especially making magic
bubbles. We also made some fairy
wands.
Numeracy Capacity and Measuring have
been our focus in Numeracy this
week. We have
looked at various sized
pots and containers
and investigated
which holds more
liquid and which holds less. We
were surprised to find that
sometimes a tall, thin container can
hold the same amount as a short
fat one.
We looked at recipes
for magic potions and
discussed the amounts
of each ingredient that
was added to the
potion. We made up our
own potions and
carefully measured out
what we needed either by
counting the ingredients or
measuring liquids.

Literacy Our focussed book this week has
been The Magic Blanket. In the
story, the children use their
blanket to pretend they were
visiting different places. We used
our class carpet as a magic
carpet and used our imagination to talk about
what we had seen on our magic carpet ride.
We needed to think of some magical rhyming
words to make our carpet fly.
In Phonics we recapped sounds learned so far
and introduced two new sounds. We looked at
simple words in, is, it and at and learned
how to break these words down into
sounds. ض
Reminder - Next week we visit the Puppet
workshop. If you haven’t booked your child
onto this trip please do so as soon as you
can by sending the permission slip and
required payment into class. Thank you!

Numeracy Activity:
Watch the attached clip below with your child. It is a funny
little song about making a witch’s potion.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3foTIHscfzs
Now help your child to make a potion or spell. Talk about what type of potion/spell you are
going to make and what will it be used for. There are lots of items you can use at home as yucky
witchy ingredients. For example, you could use things like: marbles for eye of newt, string for
spider’s legs, pieces of material for bats wings, there are many things you could use and don't
forget you can also use flour, pasta, mud, sand, rice, coloured water.
Pay attention to measuring the ingredients for example:
2 eyes of newt
3 spoonfuls of rice
2 cups of magical moon water
On the attached sheet help your child to draw or write the recipe for the potion/spell that you
have made together.
Talk Homework:
Look at the picture you received for ‘Talk Homework’ you received for the “Let’s Pretend”…
Can you see any magical people like Fairies, Wizards or Witches in the picture? Do you think they
are hiding? Lets talk about them: (Please write your child’s responses on the reverse of this page).
Questions to ask your child:
Can you see the castle? Do you think the Fairies are hiding in here? How many do you think
there are in the towers?
Can you see the yellow house? Who is hiding in here?
In the picture the children are having a party, do you think a magician is coming to do
some tricks? What type of tricks so you think he will do?
Do you like to watch tricks? What is your favourite trick? Why is this your favourite?
Can you do any tricks? What is the trick that you can do?
What did your child enjoy?
What does your child need more practice doing?
Remember: You should be guided by the pace at which your child wants to go.
If interest is being lost, leave the activities for a while and then come back to them later.
Do remember to give lots of praise and encouragement.
