She currently is a member of our school Choir, Performing Arts Club, takes part in District 91’s Latin program and is in the National Elementary Honor Society. Participation in these programs have led to school/ community involvement in a food drive for the Community Center and bringing cheer through song at the Altenheim Living Community during the holiday season. Within the classroom, Bryanna is a positive role model for the other students. She demonstrates academic success and always has a positive attitude towards her friends, classmates and all adults she comes into contact with. Bryanna’s willingness to help others is unmatched, and the patience she shows with others is far beyond her years. Bryanna is a leader in the classroom through her words and actions. Lesson of the Lasagna For years, Principal Giovannoni has been treating the teachers and staff to his lasagna lunch before winter break. Each year, Mr. G. comes in over the weekend with some helpers and bakes five gigantic lasagnas for the staff party. His generosity is part of the Field-Stevenson tradition of giving. Members of the community are also invited to attend the lasagna party. During the party this year, Sue Bogdan presented the Forest Park Food Pantry with a $1,000 staff donation. Students also showed their good will and brought in over 300 canned goods! At the end of this year, Mr. Giovannoni will be retiring. While we will miss his delicious lasagna, we will carry on the lessons of giving and community it represents. FIELD-STEVENSON’S “School Citizen of the Year”

The Annual Southside Read-in and Book Fair took place on Wednesday, December 7th at Field-Stevenson School. There was an an excellent turnout of parents and students from both Field-Stevenson and Betsy Ross schools. Teachers and volunteers created special room themes to generate interest and excitement about reading books. Theme rooms included: "Reading is a Hit" with Mrs. Uhlmann and Mrs. Boucek, "Puzzles and Games" with Ms. Behrens, "Holiday Stories"

Mrs. Binder, as usual, is keeping our students engaged and busy with many music activities. In December, the choir performed at the Community Center for the Forest Park Senior Citizen Group’s Christmas Party. They also performed with the Performing Arts Group this month at the Winter Concert.

Our fourth grade students are working on a music compositional unit, and as part of this unit, they are composting their own songs and studying famous composers in history.

As a special treat, they will be receiving a visit from Mr. Eichorst, a local composer and song writer. Third graders are steadily working on their recorder skills and have been progressing nicely through their Recorder Karate curriculum.

with Ms. Skelton, "Musical Stories" with Ms. Edwards and Mrs. Binder, and "Reading with Cody" with Mrs. Mortenson, Mrs. Rott, and her dog, Cody. The Book Fair was organized by librarians Mrs. Bussert and Mr. Vargo, and was the scene of long lines

waiting to purchase books. The South PTO donated raffle tickets which were passed out as students walked in the door. Read-in organizers and reading specialists at both schools, Mr. Cushing and Mrs. Westol, awarded gift cards from Barnes and Noble Bookstore to lucky raffle winners. Proceeds from the event help the school libraries obtain new books for children. Thanks to everyone involved for helping to make the annual Read-In a success!

The National Elementary Honor Society sponsored a food drive during the month of December. Field-Stevenson students contributed 323 non-perishable items which the NEHS members took to the Forest Park Community Center on December 14. While there, students got to see the food pantry and hear from the director about how the community is served. It was also announced that an anonymous donor contributed $100.00 to the Community Center in support of the Field-Stevenson students’ efforts. The Community Center expressed their thanks for the much needed donations. Additionally, in the spirit of giving, the faculty and staff of Field-Stevenson presented a check for over $1000.00 to the Community Center at the staff holiday luncheon on Thursday, December 15. It has become tradition in recent years to make this donation in lieu of purchasing gifts for administrators and support staff.

Seussville:3rd Grade andDr. SeussDid you know that Dr. Seuss’ real name is Theodor Seuss Geisel, that as a child, he loved to draw silly animals, and that he wrote The Cat In The Hat to help children learn to read? These are just a few of the things that Mrs. Schreiner’s 3rd grade class have learned about Dr. Seuss as part of a project that started 1st quarter and will be ending at the end of 2nd quarter involving Mrs. Schreiner’s and Ms. Behren’s 3rd grade classroom in conjunction with Mrs. Valleau’s Push-In Program. The students studied various Dr. Seuss books including The Lorax, Cat in the Hat, How The Grinch Stole Christmas, and Green Eggs and Ham. As part of the project, the class received postcards from Dr. Seuss which were related to the particular book they were reading. They also created posters about something they really cared about or believed in, and together made a poster depicting Seussville which contained various characters and places from the books. They also signed a pledge to take care of the earth based on what they learned while reading The Lorax. By the end of the unit, the students had learned about Dr. Seuss’ unique way of drawing and writing including his use of rhyme and made-up names. They also learned that at the time the first books were published, many people did not like the way in which Dr. Seuss illustrated his books, and the class has come to appreciate how Dr. Seuss’ various characters show up not just in the book they were originally in but in some other Dr. Seuss books. The students enjoyed all the activities and as a special treat, they were given a scrumptious breakfast of green eggs and ham.
