The award-winning Mighty Tomcat Band is on the road to UIL–but not without a few pit-stops! On October 1, they competed in their first competition of the year, the NETEX Marching Invitational, and came home with a Division II rating. The band’s show this year is called Rhap-sodic Adventures and consists of “Hungarian Rhapsody,” “Rhapsody in Blue,” and the clas-sic Queen ballad “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Right now, the band is working on “cleaning the drill” and adding “visuals”—fancy motions that add interest to the show. The band welcomed in a new assistant band director, David Bilyeu, who is a 2011 Baylor University graduate. Mr. Bilyeu teaches the beginning brass classes and Advanced Band at the middle school.

What’s FCA? The Fellowship of Christian Ath-letes is an organization that encourages the values of integrity, serving, teamwork, and ex-cellence. The Tom Bean Chapter meets every Wednesday at break. Membership is open to all TBHS student who want to come listen to the message and chow down on some honey buns. We asked Lauren Khoury what FCA means to her, “It gives me a chance to come together with other athletes and listen to the word of God and talk about what it means to us.” If FCA sounds like something you’d like to be a part of, there are no sign up sheets, no reg-istration forms, no dues to pay, just show up, participate in the message and prayer, and eat some honey buns.

National Honor Society is an organization that recognizes outstanding high school students who have demonstrated excel-lence in the areas of Scholarship, Leader-ship, Service, and Character. Students who have earned membership into this elite group are honored for their achievements and are “challenged to develop further through active involvement in school ac-tivities and community service.”

This year NHS inducted 21 new members. Sep-tember 24, proud family members and faculty watch their children and students pledged their commit-ment to the an-

chor values of the National Honor Society. New members received a certificate of membership and a membership card. NHS held their yearly blood drive on October 4. This year’s drive was dedicated to help Tomcat student Justin Morrison’s mom, Carolee Smith, and Advisor Cathy Harris’s brother. Texoma Regional Blood Center conducted the drive, collecting a total of 48 pints of blood which will benefit 144 patients. Students, parents, faculty and community member came together to donate a tremendous gift to the hospital communities in our area.

The treasurer is responsible for the money received and spent in class events. All the class officers are extremely honored to be elected by their classmates as Sopho-more Class President Lauren Khoury de-

clares, “I think it will be a good experience and it means a great deal to me that my fel-low classmates trust me with this position.” Senior Class Treasurer Brandon Bramer echoes, “It means a lot, I’ve always wanted

to be an officer, especially in my senior year.” Sophomore Class Secretary Madi Gordon ends with “I can’t wait until we, as

In Floral Design, students learn about six different flowers each week and use what they’ve learned to complete a proj-ect. So far this year students have studied the history of Flo-ral Design and made an arrangement from one of the time periods studied. On Wednesday, September 19, the Floral Design students took a field trip to Spe-cial Occasions Florist in Sherman where they were able to watch a professional designer create a floral masterpiece and also the budding designers put togeth-er their own small arrangement. After leaving, they traveled to Hobby Lobby to purchase items for their upcoming

project, mums for TBHS homecoming. With Halloween approaching quickly, the Floral Design students are preparing to begin creating candy bouquets for the festive holiday. All projects that are completed on or

around holidays will be given to the stu-dents’ sponsors.Sponsorships Tom Bean ISD teachers and other facul-ty members wanting to receive holiday crafts made by the High School Floral Design students can become sponsors by giving $25 to Mrs. Chapman and will get a handmade holiday gift for each up-coming holiday.

Hey, Guys! This is the Robotics Team! This

year’s competition is called Warp XX.

This crazy course requires us to pick up whif-

fle softballs, carry them up a ten foot pole, and

then drop them in a basket. Oh, yes, we will be

competing with 23 other teams!

Anyways, Robotics is a test of ingenuity &

physics to see just how great a robot a team can

build. And when this competition is over, we

won’t be finished. No, we’ll be making mouse-

traps and programming robots to do tasks on

their own. If this sounds like it’s right down

your alley, come by Mrs. Getrum’s classroom

or to the shop to see some of the cool stuff that

we are working on.

FCCLA is off to an impressive start this year! Members

kicked off the year with a Leadership Workshop at Caddo

FCCLA teamed up with FFA for a trip to the State Fair

and the Theatre department will join efforts for the annual

Spanish Club is a group of kids who meet the last Thursday of every month to celebrate the coming together of cultures. The best way to learn about something is hands-on; this is what Spanish Club students are doing. They’re exploring Spanish movies, food, music and dance. this helps the kids enhance a student’s understanding of the Hispanic culture

outside of class. In order to be in Spanish club, students must have taken at least a year of Spanish. There are nine students in the entire group and it’s still growing. According to Jor-dan Moore, a student who participates in Spanish Club, “The movies are educationally inspiring and they teach us about different cultures and all sorts of diverse people.” There are no fees to join the group. The catch phrase this year is “It’s all about the stache.”

FFA stands for Future Farmers of America, but there is a common misconception that you have to be country or show an animal to be in the FFA, but that’s not the case at all. The FFA is a huge or-ganization with a multitude of opportunities and welcomes anyone who wishes to be in the organization. The Tom Bean FFA chapter has many classes to offer with lots of active members. Examples of these classes are floral design, small animal science, welding, livestock production, problems and solutions, and PALS. These classes offer a hands-on experience and can help start the basics for developing a career in agriculture. Even if agriculture related career isn’t really what you seek to do, ag classes teach determina-tion, hardwork, and creativity. Along with the variety of classes

offered, FFA has many competitions, shows, and conventions to attend yearly. Upcoming events include a field trip to the Texas state fair Oc-tober 9th and a LDE competition November 5th at Sherman High School. LDE stands for leadership development events; this allows FFA members to compete against each other in special compe-titions. Some of these events include chapter conducting, creed speaking, quiz, and much more. Over the summer, the 2012-2013 Tom Bean FFA officer team attended the Texas State FFA convention in Corpus Christi, Texas. The officers had a fun filled 5 days, and met many new friends from all over the state that shared the same interests as them.
