Last Week’s Game - September 14, 2008 Edward Jones Dome Giants 41, Rams 13 Playing as visitors for the first time this season, the Giants continued their remarkable success away from Giants Stadium with a resounding 41-13 rout of the St. Louis Rams Sunday in the Edward Jones Dome. The Giants scored 21 unanswered points in the final 7:18 to break open a close game and secure their most one-sided road victory in a dozen years (35-7 at Detroit on Oct. 27, 1996). The Giants have won 11 consecutive road games (eight in the regular season and three in the postseason). If the neutral-site Super Bowl XLII is included, their winning streak away from Giants Stadium is 12 games. More importantly, the Giants improved to 2-0 for the first time since 2005. They host the Cincinnati Bengals next week, then have a bye. St. Louis dropped to 0-2. The Giants had a lengthy list of big contributors. Eli Manning threw touchdown passes to Plaxico Burress, Amani Toomer and Ahmad Bradshaw and the latter also closed the scoring with a 31-yard run. The offense rolled up 441 yards and 25 first downs. Brandon Jacobs (93), Derrick Ward (58) and Bradshaw (52) combined for 203 rushing yards. Domenik Hixon and Steve Smith also had big catches. Defensively, Justin Tuck grabbed a Marc Bulger pass and re-turned it 41 yards for a touchdown. Tuck and Fred Robbins each contributed two sacks to the Giants’ six-sack assault. St. Louis ran for only 68 yards and gained 201 overall. St. Louis scored on a pair of 54-yard field goals by Josh Brown and an improbable 45-yard touchdown pass from Bulger to Torry Holt that pulled the Rams to within 20-13 early in the fourth quarter. But the Rams gained a paltry 25 total yards on their final three possessions. The Giants responded to Holt’s touchdown by driving 82 yards in only six plays, including a short Manning pass that Bradshaw turned into an 18-yard touchdown. Hixon set up the score with a terrific 32-yard reception down the left sideline.

On the Rams’ next possession, Bulger threw a pass for Dante Hall. Tuck, who was engaged with tackle Adam Goldberg, threw his hands up, somehow secured the ball and ran 41 yards for the touchdown that made it 34-13 with 5:30 remaining. The Giants forced the Rams into a punt that Hixon returned 50 yards to the St. Louis 39-yard line. Three plays later, Bradshaw zipped around left end and didn’t stop until he was in the end zone 31 yards away for the final score of the game. Brad-shaw had not touched the ball from scrimmage this season until Sunday’s fourth quarter. The Rams’ first touchdown in two games – Bulger’s 45-yard pass to Holt - narrowed the Giants’ lead to seven points with 10:46 remaining in the fourth quarter. On first down, Bulger threw deep for Holt, who was covered by rookie Kenny Phillips – who had just entered the game because Michael Johnson was injured with a burner on the previous play. Phillips got a hand on Bulger’s pass in the end zone, but could-n’t hold it and it bounced in the air. As Holt and Phillips fell to the ground the ball followed them and bounced off Holt's hand and into his arms. The two players wrestled for possession and after close inspection by the officials, Holt was awarded both the ball and the touchdown. Manning’s second touchdown pass of the game – a 10-yarder to Toomer – stretched the Giants’ lead to 20-6 with 8:48 re-maining in the third quarter. On first-and-goal from the 10, Manning faked a handoff then fired to the end zone for Toomer, who had separated himself from the St. Louis secondary. The Giants appeared to have lost the ball on the play prior to the touchdown, when Manning threw to the left side for Bur-ress, who let go of the ball as he was tackled by Fakhir Brown. The officials ruled it was a fumble that the Rams recovered. But Coughlin challenged the ruling, saying Burress was down by contact. After review, referee Bill Leavy overturned the call on the field, saying Burress’ elbow and back were down. The pass became a 16-yard gain to the 10 and the Giants immediately scored. The Giants faced only one third down on the drive – an early third-and-six from the seven - but Manning and Burress con-nected on a 14-yard pass for the first down. Two plays later, Jacobs burst through the left side for a 30-yard gain. Two plays after that, Ward picked up 14 yards running to the right side.

The Giants led at halftime, 13-6, as Burress’ touchdown was the difference after a half in which both sides kicked a pair of field goals. Carney kicked his second three-pointer with only two seconds remaining in the half. St. Louis countered with Brown’s 54-yard field goals. The kicks were one yard short of tying the longest field goal ever kicked against the Giants. On Oct. 7, 2001, Washington’s Brett Conway kicked a 55-yard field goal in Gi-ants Stadium. Brown’s second long field goal had moved the Rams to within four points for the second time. Marc Bulger completed passes of 22 and 11 yards to Steve Jackson on the drive, but two Fred Robbins sacks totaling 16 yards left them with a drive of only 17 net yards and Brown was forced to kick another 54-yarder. Carney’s 39-yard field goal increased the Giants’ lead to 10-3 with 8:14 remaining in the second quarter. The Giants moved 59 yards in 13 plays before the kick. Toomer caught a pair of Manning passes for 35 yards, but Ward came up two yards short on a run on third-and-nine. Coughlin then summoned Carney, who again kicked in place of the injured Lawrence Tynes. St. Louis pulled to within 7-3 on Brown’s first long field goal with 14:13 remaining in the second quarter. Before Brown put the Rams on the board, St. Louis moved 41 yards in 11 plays. But the most significant play of the drive was one on which they lost eight yards. On third-and-16 from the Gi-ants’ 47-yard line, Tuck sacked Bulger for an eight-yard loss. But Tuck also grabbed Bulger’s facemask, a 15-yard penalty that was enforced at the Rams’ 45 and gave the home team a first down on the Giants’ 40. The Giants took a 7-0 led when Manning threw a 33-yard touch-down pass to Burress with 6:11 remaining in the first quarter. On first down, Manning executed a perfect play action fake to Jacobs. At the same time, Burress easily distanced himself from safety Oshiomogho Atogwe by faking an outside move and cutting in-side. Burress was three yards ahead of Atogew when he caught the ball at the goal line.

Game Notes - Giants vs. Rams • The Giants improved to 2-0 for the first time since 2005 and won their 11th consecutive road game (eighth in the regular season). Including their victory in Super Bowl XLII, which was played at a neutral site, the Giants have won their last 12 games away from Giants Stadium. • The Giants improved to 46-33-5 in road openers. • The Giants won their fourth game in a row against the Rams and now trail the all-time regular season series, 25-13. • The Giants won their sixth consecutive game in a domed sta-dium (five regular season games and the Super Bowl). They are 23-12 (.657) in regular season games played indoors. That is the second-best percentage among outdoor teams in dome games. The Redskins are 25-11 (.694) • The Giants’ 41 points was their highest total since the last time they played the Rams – on Oct. 5, 2005, they beat St Louis in Giants Stadium, 44-24. • The 28-point victory margin was the Giants’ largest since a 36-0 victory over Washington on Oct. 30, 2005. It was their most lopsided triumph on the road since a 35-7 victory at De-troit on Oct. 27, 1996. • The Giants scored 28 second-half points for the first time since a 35-24 victory over the Jets on Oct. 7, 2007. They scored 21 fourth-quarter points for the first time since a 38-21 win at Buffalo last Dec. 23. • The Giants led at halftime, 13-6. It was the first time they did not allow a first-half touchdown since Nov. 18, 2007 at Detroit, when a 10-0 lead became a 16-10 victory. • The Giants have allowed only 20 points (seven to Washington, 13 to St. Louis), their lowest total of points surrendered in the season’s first two games since giving up 13 in 1952. • The Giants gained 441 yards, their largest total since they had 491 yards in a 31-10 victory at Atlanta on Oct. 15, 2007. • The Giants’ 200 rushing yards was their highest total since

they ran for 289 yards at Buffalo last season. • The Giants had 25 first downs, their highest total since they had 28 at Atlanta last year. • The Giants scored a touchdown on a 97-yard drive in the third quarter, their longest possession in terms of yardage since Oct. 7, 2007, when they reached the end zone to conclude a 98-yard drive against the Jets. • The Giants’ defense allowed only 201 yards, the lowest oppo-nent total since Philadelphia gained 190 yards in a 16-3 Giants win on Sept. 30, 2007. • The defense sacked Marc Bulger six times, the Giant’ highest sack total since they had six in a 21-16 victory at Chicago on Dec. 2, 2007. • Eli Manning completed 20 of 29 passes for 260 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Manning’s passer rating of 131.4 was the highest regular season rating of his career. His previous best was 130.0 vs. Philadelphia on Nov. 20, 2005. Manning had a passer rating of 132.4 in the NFC Divisional Playoff Game at Dallas on Jan. 13. • This was the ninth time in Manning’s 57 regular season starts that he has thrown at least three touchdown passes. • Manning’s shortest completion was one of his most notewor-thy. He threw a two-yard pass to Brandon Jacobs … with his left hand. Manning was being wrapped up by defensive end James Hall and could free only his left hand. “I think that’s my first left-handed completed pass,” Manning said. “You do whatever you can do to try to get a completion. “It was one of those situations where I didn’t want to take a sack. You’re in field goal position. They had pretty good pres-sure and (Hall) had a hold of my right arm. I saw Brandon Ja-cobs and I tried to hit him.” The Giants then called timeout and John Carney kicked a 33-yard field goal with two seconds remaining in the half. • Amani Toomer caught a team-high six passes for 67 yards and a touchdown. He increased his franchise-record totals to 628 catches, 8,996 yards and 51 touchdown receptions.

• Plaxico Burress caught five passes for 81 yards and a touch-down. It was his 30th scoring reception as a Giant, breaking a tie with Bob Schnelker and moving him into eighth place on the franchise’s career list. • Brandon Jacobs led the Giants’ 200-yard rushing attack with 93 yards. Derrick Ward added 58 and Ahmad Bradshaw 52, including a 31-yard touchdown. Bradshaw, who touched the ball on offense for the first time this season in the fourth quarter, also scored on an 18-yard reception. He became the first Giant with rushing and receiving touchdowns in the same regular season game since Tiki Barber did it against New Orleans on Sept. 19, 2005. Brandon Jacobs accomplished the feat in the NFC Wild Card Game at Tampa Bay on Jan. 6. Burress was the last Giant to score two touchdowns in a regu-lar season game – he did it in last year’s finale vs. New Eng-land. Toomer scored two touchdowns in the NFC Divisional Playoff Game at Dallas. • Justin Tuck scored a touchdown on a 41-yard return after intercepting a Bulger pass in the fourth quarter. He is the first Giant to score on an interception return since Corey Webster (34 yards) and Kawika Mitchell (20 yards) did it at Buffalo last Dec. 23. “It was very exciting,” Tuck said. “Hopefully, this is the start of something and I can get a few more.” • Tuck and Fred Robbins each had two sacks. It was Tuck’s third two-sack game and second in the regular season. He had a pair of sacks on Sept. 30, 2007 vs. Philadelphia and again in Super Bowl XLII vs. New England. The two-sack game was Robbins’ first since Nov. 4, 2004 vs. Chicago. Antonio Pierce and Jay Alford had the Giants’ other sacks. • Both head coaches won replay challenges. Tom Coughlin’s challenge enabled the Giants to retain possession of the ball on what became a touchdown drive. With 9:13 left in the third quarter, Manning threw to the left side for Burress, who was tackled by Fakhir Brown and lost the ball. The officials ruled it was a fumble that the Rams recov-

ered. Coughlin challenged, saying Burress was down by con-tact. After review, referee Bill Leavy overturned the call on the field, saying Burress’ elbow and back were down. It became a 16-yard completion and on the next play, Manning threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Toomer. Coughlin is 16-21 in replay challenges since coming to the Giants in 2004. St. Louis coach Scott Linehan won his challenge with 9:26 re-maining in the fourth quarter. Steve Smith went down to catch a Manning pass, then got up and ran for what appeared to be a 25-yard gain. Linehan challenged the spot, saying Smith was down by contact by Rickey Manning, Jr. After review, Leavy overturned the call and said Smith was down, reducing the gain to eight yards. Giants opponents are 11-20 in replay challenges since 2004. • Josh Brown kicked two 54-yard field goals for St. Louis, it was the first time two kicks over 53 yards were converted against the Giants in the same game. The kicks were one yard short of tying the longest three-pointer ever kicked against the Giants. On Oct. 7, 2001, Washington’s Brett Conway kicked a 55-yard field goal in Giants Stadium. • The Giants’ inactive players were kicker Lawrence Tynes, cornerbacks R.W. McQuarters and Terrell Thomas, running back Danny Ware, linebacker Jonathan Goff, tackle Adam Koets, defensive end Dave Tollefson and wide receiver Mario Man-ningham. The two changes from the opener were veterans Sam Madison and Reuben Droughns replacing McQuarters and Ware. Madison and Droughns played on special teams. With McQuarters inactive, Domenik Hixon assumed the punt return duties and averaged a robust 19.0 yards on four re-turns, including a 50-yarder to set up the Giants’ final touch-down.

2008 Season Facts - 12 Straight away from Home - In winning Super Bowl XLII last season the Giants set their NFL single-season record for victories away from their home field with 11. After falling in Dallas 45-35 in Week One of 2007 season, the Giants never lost again away from home, including postseason play. After defeat-ing the Rams, 41-13, in St. Louis on Sept. 14 the team has now won 12 straight games away from Giants Stadium. 11 Straight on the Road - The victory in St. Louis was the Giants’ 11th in a row on the road, tying them for the second-longest such streak in NFL history. The San Francisco 49ers set the NFL record with 19 straight road wins from 1988-90 (18 regu-lar season, one in the playoffs). The Giants are tied with three teams for the second-longest string of road victories: Chicago (1940-42), San Francisco (1987-88) and Pittsburgh (2004-05). The Giants have won eight regular season games and three postseason games in their road winning streak. They next play away from home on Monday, Oct. 13, at Cleveland. Consecutive Road Victories 19 San Francisco (1988-90) 11 Giants (2007-08) 11 Chicago (1940-42) 11 San Francisco (1987-88) 11 Pittsburgh (2004-05) 100 Wins for Tom Coughlin - With a victory over the Jets on Oct. 7, 2007 Tom Coughlin notched his 100th victory, including postseason games. Coughlin won his 100th regular season game at Detroit on Nov. 18th of last year. In his 13 seasons as a head coach, Coughlin has 105 regular season wins and eight postsea-son triumphs with an overall record of 113-95-0. The win over the Rams was Coughlin’s 105th in the regular season, moving him ahead of Buddy Parker for 31st on the NFL’s all-time list. Including postseason games, Coughlin has 113 victories, which places him in 31st place on the all-time list. The Victory over the Rams broke a tie with Hall of Fame coach John Madden. Coughlin’s four playoff victories with New York place him second in Giants history behind Bill Parcells’ eight. Giants Connections - Giants tight ends coach Mike Pope was the tight ends coach and offensive coordinator in Cincinnati from 1992-93.

Cincinnati Connections - Linebacker Dhani Jones was origi-nally drafted by the Giants in the sixth round (177th overall) of the 2000 NFL Draft. He played for the Giants from 2000-2003 before leaving as an unrestricted free agent. 50th Anniversary of The Greatest Game Ever Played - This year marks the 50th anniversary of the 1958 NFL Champion-ship game in which the Baltimore Colts defeated the New York Giants 23-17 in overtime. It was the first sudden-death overtime NFL title game in NFL history and widely regarded as “The Great-est Game Ever Played.” The Game featured such Giants legends as Frank Gifford, Charlie Conerly, and Pat Summerall. Pressure Point - Last season the Giants led the league with 53 quarterback sacks. Osi Umenyiora led the team with 13 sacks with Justin Tuck enjoying a breakout year with 10. In their week four game at home against Philadelphia the Giants foreshad-owed just how formidable their pass rush could be, sacking Ea-gle’s quarterback Donavan McNabb 12 times - tying an NFL re-cord - with Osi Umenyiora setting a team record with six. The Giants mastery of putting pressure on the quarterback was fea-tured on the grandest of stages in their 17-14 victory over New England in Super Bowl XLII when they brought down Patriots quarterback Tom Brady five times. Picking Them Off - Giants safety Sammy Knight and corner-back Sam Madison both rank in the top ten for interceptions among active NFL players. Knight is tied for second with Den-ver’s Champ Bailey with 42 while Madison ranks sixth with 37. Darren Sharper of Minnesota is first with 53. Manning to Burress - Since 2005, Eli Manning has thrown 30 touchdown passes to Plaxico Burress, the most by any NFL quar-terback-wide receiver tandem during that time. In addition, Burress has caught Manning’s seven longest scoring passes and nine of the top 10. The duo have connected for one touchdown so far this season. Mr. Consistent - If QB Eli Manning continues his streak of throwing for at least 3,000 yards and 20 touchdowns he will become the first Giants quarterback to do so for four consecutive seasons. In 2007 Manning became the second Giants quarter-back in history with three consecutive seasons with more than 3,000 yards and 20 touchdown passes. Phil Simms did from1984-86.

The Last Time - December 26, 2004 Paul Brown Stadium Bengals 23, Giants 22 Red zone failures, costly mistakes and an inexplicable chain of events in the game’s final moments resulted in an excruciating 23-22 loss to the Bengals in Paul Brown Stadium. In the last 2:19, the Giants, in order: surrendered a 42-yard punt return, a completed pass on fourth-and-10, a five-yard touchdown pass, and squandered a final opportunity to pull out a victory by throwing an interception. And that was after five trips inside the Cincinnati 20-yard line netted just one touchdown and four field goals. Tiki Barber rushed for 109 yards and scored the Giants’ only touchdown, and Steve Christie kicked five field goals for the Gi-ants. Christie became the first Giant to kick five field goals since Raul Allegre at Minnesota on Nov. 16, 1986. Cincinnati got two touchdown receptions from Chad Johnson, in-cluding the game-winner with 44 seconds remaining, a rushing touchdown from Rudi Johnson and a field goal by Shayne Graham. The fourth quarter was a microcosm of both the game and the Giants’ entire season. Christie’s 41-yard field goal, his fourth of the game, put the Giants back in front at 19-17 with 12:38 remaining in the game. After Cincinnati had jumped ahead, the Giants drove 39 yards in seven plays. Barber had a 21-yard run and Amani Toomer had his first two receptions of the game, covering 27 yards. But a holding penalty on Luke Petitgout set the Giants back 10 yards. On third-and-12 from the 14, Manning was sacked for a nine-yard loss by Justin Smith, and Coughlin sent Christie on the field go kick the go-ahead field goal. The Giants got the ball back four minutes later, when Nick Greisen forced a fumble by fullback Jeremi Johnson that was recovered by Brent Alexander and returned 29 yards to the Cincinnati 28-yard line. Manning quickly threw an eight-yard pass to Jeremy Shockey. Barber then picked up six yards before Ron Dayne’s nine-yard run set up a second-and-one at the five. The Giants were poised to

score the touchdown that would have given them a commanding lead. But they muffed the opportunity. Dayne was stopped for no gain. Then Petitgout was penalized for a false start, moving the Giants back five yards. Manning’s pass for Shockey was knocked down by Kevin Kaesviharn, who would have scored had he held onto the ball. Christie came on to kick his fifth field goal of the game, a 28-yarder, which made it 22-17. The Giants forced a punt on the Bengals’ next possession. The Giants took over on their own seven and on third-and-five from the 23, Manning’s pass to an open Toomer was tipped by defen-sive tackle John Thornton, forcing a punt. Three Jon Kitna incompletions left Cincinnati facing a fourt-and-10 with 1:51 remaining. One defensive play and victory would belong to the Giants. Alas, Kitna threw to the left side for T.J. Houshmandzadeh, who caught the ball between defensive backs Frank Walker and Alexander. It was a dagger to the heart, and it gave the Bengals a first down o the five. After Kenny Watson gained a yard, Johnson, a Pro Bowl receiver, eluded rookie defensive back Curtis Deloatch at the same moment Walker missed a chance to sack Kitna – who then threw to a slid-ing Johnson on the right side of the end zone. The two-point con-version attempt failed, but the Bengals led, 23-22. But the Giants weren’t dead. Willie Ponder capped another out-standing day by returning the kickoff 35 yards to the Giants’ 48. A five-yard penalty put the ball on the Bengals’ 47. The Giants had 36 seconds and two timeouts, plenty of time to get in position for another Christie field goal. On first down, Manning dropped back to throw to Shockey. The pass was tipped high into the air by Robert Geathers and inter-cepted by another lineman, Carl Powell. The turnover ended a frustrating day for the Giants. The Giants’ inability to get into the end zone in the fourth quarter mirrored their difficulty in the second period, when they traveled deep in Bengals territory three times. Barber scored a touchdown the first time, but they settled for Christie field goals on their next two red zone trips.

Head Coaches

Tom Coughlin

NFL Record: 113-95-0 NFL Head Coach: 13th Year

College: Syracuse Long regarded as one of the NFL’s premier head coaches, Tom Coughlin reached the pinnacle of his profession in the 2007 season when he led the Giants to a victory in Super Bowl XLII. The Giants, heavy underdogs entering the game, scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to defeat the previously-undefeated New England Patriots, 17-14. Coughlin is 8-6 in the postseason, including 4-2 with the Giants. The four playoff victories are the second-most in Giants history, behind Parcells’ eight. The championship season capped a Giants revival that began when Coughlin was named the 16th head coach in franchise history on Jan. 6, 2004. The Giants won only four games in the season before his arrival. A successful head coach in the NFL and on the collegiate level, Coughlin was an assistant coach with the Giants when they won Super Bowl XXV in 1990. He quickly put the team back on a path that would ultimately lead to another Super Bowl victory. Coughlin has won three division titles and led his teams to the playoffs seven times in his 12 years as an NFL head coach. He is 105-89 (.541) in the regular season, plus 8-6 in the postseason for an overall record of 113-95 (.543). Coughlin’s 105 regular season victories place him sixth among current NFL head coaches, behind Holmgren, Shanahan, Dungy, Belichick and Jeff Fisher. Four of the five coaches ahead of him have coached at least one more sea-son than Coughlin and one, Dungy, has coached the same number of years. Coughlin is the only one of the six to have coached an expansion team. A victory over the Jets on Oct. 7 was the 100th of Coughlin’s career, including postseason games. Coughlin won his 100th regular season game at Detroit on Nov. 18. Coughlin previously coached the Jacksonville Jaguars, taking charge of the expansion franchise more than 18 months prior to its first game and guiding the team for its first eight seasons. Under Coughlin, the Jaguars were the most successful expansion team in NFL history. Coughlin compiled a 68-60

regular season record (.531), plus a 4-4 mark in the playoffs, and twice took Jacksonville to the AFC Championship Game. The Jaguars made the playoffs every year from 1996-99, the only expansion team in history to earn four postseason berths in its first five seasons. Coughlin arrived in Jacksonville following three years as the head coach at Boston College, where he turned a struggling program into a Top 20 team. He was 21-13-1 in three seasons (1991-93) with the Eagles, including 9-3 Coughlin was the Giants wide receivers coach under Bill Parcells from 1988-90. Under his tutelage, receivers such as Mark Ingram, Lionel Manuel, Odessa Turner and Stephen Baker all improved and helped the Giants win their second Super Bowl. Coughlin began his coaching career in 1969 as a graduate assistant at Syra-cuse, his alma mater.
