OutlineThis project is designed to support teaching assistants(TAs) in developing specialist knowledge for teachingmathematics, thus enabling them to understand, teachand support pupils in maths in the classroom.

What is involved?The programme is based on four core primary modules:• Number sense• Additive reasoning• Multiplicative reasoning• Fractions.An additional module offers an introduction which sets thescene for the current maths teaching landscape. Dependingon the structure of the programme at a local level, the timecommitment will be equivalent to three or four days.

Who can apply?These programmes are designed for TAs who aresupporting maths, and who would like to develop theirspecialist knowledge for teaching maths. This may beparticularly relevant for new TAs or TAs that have notreceived maths-specific training.

The wider contextIt has long been recognised that maths teaching isenhanced when practitioners are confident about thesubject matter. Maths Hubs work with a range of partnersto ensure there is effective professional development ofthose supporting maths in schools so that they have thespecialist knowledge required to support the learning ofmaths. Expectations of participants and their institutionsParticipants and their schools must be able to commit tothe full academic year’s programme. This is likely to involvesome face-to-face activity alongside online collaboration.During the programme, participants will be asked toundertake tasks with learners to deepen their thinkingabout the learning of maths, and to share this withcolleagues. It is asked that school leaders support theirstaff to complete this work.

Review their practice as a result of the sessions andmake specific adaptations to impact on pupil outcomes.

Covid Recovery

The school year 2020/21 will be substantially affected bythe impact of the coronavirus outbreak. The knock-oneffects on school life and teachers’ working lives can’t bepredicted with any certainty. So, all Maths Hubs work willbe flexible and adapt to changing realities. There’s likelyto be more live online collaboration, often including useof video, for example.

In addition, Work Group content will be adjusted toaddress schools’ recovery from coronavirus-relateddisruption alongside work on the central maths subjectmatter.
