Gaining Credits Towards NCEANCEA (National Certificate of Educational Achievement) is the New Zealand national qualification assessed in Year 11 - 13. This qualification measures performance against pre-set standards. Students in Year 11 work towards gaining a Level 1 certificate, in Year 12 a Level 2 certificate and in Year 13 a Level 3 certificate.

Students accumulate credits towards their national certificates at each of the three levels through internal and external standards in all subjects. Most subjects offer between 18 and 24 credits.

There are four possible levels of achievement that can be attained in each standar: Not Achieved, Achieved, Achieved with Merit, or Achieved with Excellence. The level of achievement does not change the number of credits a student receives.

Subject (Course) EndorsementStudents will have strengths in individual courses, acknowledged with course endorsement at Excellence or Merit. Students must gain 14 or more credits at Excellence level for endorsement for Excellence or 14 or more credits at

Excellence/Merit for endorsement at Merit. At least three of these credits must be from externally assessed standards and three from internally assessed standards. Physical Education and Visual Arts are exempt from this requirement as these courses are fully internally assessed.

All credits must be achieved in the same year.

Certificate EndorsementNCEA can be attained at both the Merit and Excellence levels.

Students require:

• 50 credits at Excellence level to gain NCEA Level 1, 2 or 3 certificates endorsed with Excellence

• 50 credits at Merit (or Merit and Excellence), are required to gain NCEA Level 1, 2, or 3 certificates endorsed with Merit

• These credits may be gained over more than one year

• Credits at a higher level may count towards the endorsement of a certificate at a lower level.

QUALIFICATIONS at St Cuthbert’s CollegeStudents will have a choice of qualifications at Year 12 and 13. They can select either NCEA Levels 2 and 3 or the IB Diploma Programme. This pamphlet outlines the keypoints of NCEA.

University Entrance with NCEAUniversity entrance and selection for some tertiary courses is based upon NCEA credits. Students are eligible for entrance to university in New Zealand if they meet the following requirements:

NCEA Level 3: three subjects of Level 3 made up of 14 credits each, plus literacy and numeracy requirements.

Scholarship New Zealand Scholarship is offered at Year 13 and is externally assessed. This award recognises top scholars throughout the country. It does not attract credits nor contribute towards a qualification, but successful candidates may be eligible for a monetary award. Scholarship assesses students against challenging standards and is demanding for the most able students in each subject. Students are expected to apply higher level thinking based on in-school and independent learning.

Students are able to enter one or more Scholarship standards as well as their Level 3 standards.

The Scholarship Awards are:

Single Subject Award1. For students who achieve Scholarship in

up to two subjects.

2. A one-off award of $500 per subject (maximum payment $1,000).

Top Subject Scholar Award1. For students who are top in one of the 28

Scholarship subjects.

2. $2,000 each year for three years as long as the student maintains a ‘B’ grade average in tertiary study.

three Scholarship subjects with at least two Outstanding performances, or more than three Scholarships with at least one at Outstanding.

2. $5,000 each year for three years as long as the student maintains a ‘B’ grade average in tertiary study.

Premier Award1. For the very top 5 - 10 students

who achieve three Scholarships with Outstanding performances.
