1. BACKGROUND:

NAZIR ( Natun Zibon Rochi) is a Non-Government voluntary organization engaged in development activities in Lalmonirhat District and started functioning from February 1997. NAZIR has been formed by a group of competent professionals.

The Northern part of Bangladesh is poverty stricken underserved remote and neglected area in the country. Lalmonirhat is one of the poorest districts in northern Bangladesh which is crisscrossed by many rivers and tributaries and thus 1/3 of the District being submerged by flood-water almost every year. More over due to ignorance, mal-nutrition and health hazards disability in the district increasing. The district comprises an area of 1241 square kilometer with a population of 12,53,460 of which 69% lives below poverty level.

NAZIR has been formed to alleviate poverty and socio-economic emancipation of the majority population and supplement and/or complement the facilities and resources of the existing service providers whose interventions are insufficient to address the need and requirement of the target population though comprehensive efforts.

The main purpose and mission of establishing NAZIR is to assist the deprived, disabled and poverty driven communities including char (sandbar) people. Disabled are organized and united together under some peoples’ organization/institution emphasizing female and children.

2. VISION:

NAZIR envisages a society where in common people will resume supreme in shaping their future. People will be unleashing their potential in creating a just and all round sustainable development with their whole hearted participation.

3. MISSION:

Enhance the capacity of the community people by ensuring a congenial and deprivation free society through awareness raising, education, motivation and effective communication supplemented by need based socio-economic intervention and resource mobilization both internal and external and encouraging the participation of the community people in order to facilitate forming peoples’ organization who can lead and perform the role of materializing sustainable community development.

4. PURPOSE:

The purpose of the organization is to work for productive and sustainable community action and development which will ensure and facilitate community participation individual and group development and equitable opportunities for availing and consuming resources by all classes of people.

5. LEGAL STATUS OF THE ORGANIZATION:

NAZIR is registered by the Department of Social Services, Lalmonirhat and NGO Affairs Bureau vide registration no LAL/SADOR/92/98 dated 29.09.1998, and 1398 dated 07.07.1999 respectively.

6. ON GOING ACTIVITIES:

NAZIR development activities are reflected though group approach.

The activities of NAZIR are categorized into 5 basic areas as follows:

1. Poverty alleviation which includes savings & credit, skill development training to undertake different Income Generation Projects.

2. Social change through education, human development training, institution building and legal education.3. Reduction of disabilities and rehabilitate the disabled persons.4. Agricultural activities include awareness on environmental degradation, Soil health management, field

crops, home-stead gardening, livestock and fish culture.5. Ensure Primary Health Care services to lead healthier lives.

01 Institution/organization building

Activities are reflected though Group approach:

Through formation and development of group, the members begin sharing ideas, feelings, giving feedback, exploring actions and sharing information related to the task. This becomes a period during which people feel good about what is going on. They feel good about being a part of a group, and there is an emerging openness and though group approach increase capability of the group members.

02 Micro Credit NAZIR is a partner of PKSF( Palli Karma Sahayak Foundation) and providing micro credit in group to the

rural poor women after conduction of different skill development training to undertake IGAs.

03 Agriculture Motivate farmers for intensive use of land and plant trees to protect environmental degradation.

Motivate farmers to use compost/cow dung, Vermicompost, Quick compost, Green manuring and less or no use of chemical fertilizer to preserve soil fertility.

Transfer improved technology/set-up of demonstration plots to promote knowledge and skill of farmers.

Establish home gardening round the year for own consumption and extra income.

Provide financial support in terms of credit to undertake income generating activities.

Motivate farmers to undertake projects on Poultry, Fish culture and Livestock.

04 Disaster Management/ Char land (sand bar) Development

Teach people as to how reduce losses during and after flood.

Change cropping pattern and introduce adaptable agriculture.

Dissemination of early warning messages to the people and to take precautionary measures.

Risk assessment and resource mapping.. Ensure safe drinking water, distribution of ORS

among the flood affected people. Provide credit & encourage people to undertake

different type of IGA’s with appropriate skill development training.

Provide primary health care services to the char dwellers.

Raise high-land for safety lives during flood. Marketing of the products through developing

entrepreneur ship. 05 Education Provide NFPE (Non Formal Primary Education) and

NFAL (Non Formal Adult Literacy). Grow awareness among people and encourage

them to sent children to the school. Encourage parents to send disabled children to

schools for education.06 Women development

including children Aware women about the importance of education

and their responsibilities. Empowerment of the women through extra income

participation to the local bodies. Aware women about legal rights and provide

support in establishing the rights. Educate children and refrain those children from

selling labor and to raise their voice and protect their rights.

NAZIR has a competent team of trainers in Agriculture, Health and Disabilities, Group management, Credit operation including IGA’s, Education and Women Development. It has got a training facility for 30 participants including accommodation.
