It just seems silly and primitive to me. You pray to a piece of wood or stone and worship it? That’s your god? Really? I can relate to Jeremiah’s statement in 16:11 where he says, “Can people make their own gods? These are not really gods at all!” And they’re not, but they are physical representations of the things people worshipped and desired in their heart. These idols represented the gods of fertility, productivity, suc- cess, power, victory over their enemies, safety, and of course worldly pleasures. None of us have ever desired or “worshipped” any of those things – right? I think an honest look inside ourselves would reveal that “Yes we have and yes we do.” We may not think of it as “worship” like we worship the Lord Almighty. But consider this – If we place great im- portance on it, spend lots of time pursuing it, dream or imagine what life would be like possessing it, or invest large quantities of our money or resources in it – most likely it’s a god to us. We may not have little wooden or stone figures we bow down to – but these same “gods” are alive and well today. Success, status, power, sex, pleasure, security, prosperity, and many others. The very first commandment is, “Do not worship any other gods be- sides Me.” Exodus 20:3 Then God says in Vs. 5, “I am a jealous God who will not share your affection with any other god!” It’s pretty clear that God not only wants to be #1 – He wants to be the ONLY one. On Sep- tember 17 th we are going to be starting a six week church-wide cam- paign entitled “Gods At War” where we will look at what idols we may have in our lives and how they are competing with the one true God for the throne of our heart. IDOL WORSHIP

When I read the Old Testament, I’m always struck by the rampant idol worship that went on in those days among all the nations. These idols represented the gods of fertility, productivity, suc-cess, power, victory over their enemies, safety, and of course worldly pleasures.

None of us have ever desired or “worshipped” any of those things – right? I think an honest look inside ourselves would reveal that “Yes we have and yes we do.” We may not think of it as “worship” like we worship the Lord Almighty. But consider this – If we place great im-portance on it, spend lots of time pursuing it, dream or imagine what life would be like possessing it, or invest large quantities of our money or resources in it – most likely it’s a god to us. We may not have little wooden or stone figures we bow down to – but these same “gods” are alive and well today. Success, status, power, sex, pleasure, security, prosperity, and many others.

The very first commandment is, “Do not worship any other gods be-sides Me.” Exodus 20:3 Then God says in Vs. 5, “I am a jealous God who will not share your affection with any other god!” It’s pretty clear that God not only wants to be #1 – He wants to be the ONLY one. On Sep-tember 17th we are going to be starting a six week church-wide cam-paign entitled “Gods At War” where we will look at what idols we may have in our lives and how they are competing with the one true God for the throne of our heart. I encourage you to join us for this powerful study.

Member Spotlight!

Meet Maria:

Maria is Hallwood Community Church’s Sponsored Child!

She is a pastor’s child who lives in Columbia. She is 12

years old, is in the 6th grade, and has one brother. At

home “I like to help my mother. At church, I like to attend

Sunday School. I also like skating.”

In many countries, it is difficult for Nazarene Pastors who

have very little income to access and sustain quality edu-

cation for their children. The Nazarene Pastors’ Children

Sponsorship Program assist pastors’ children with their

primary and secondary educational costs. It helps pay for

tuition, school supplies, uniforms, and sometimes food

and transportation. The ultimate objective of the program

is to equip children to reach their potential; to be responsi-

ble and contributing members of their families, churches,

and communities; and to embrace Christ’s call to disciple-

ship.

If you would like to donate to Maria or write her a letter

she would be thrilled! Please contact Ruby Schoenig for

more information.

Counselor’s Corner

Character by God

Who are you, really?

I ask my clients if they like their

character qualities “all the time”.

Most are honest and say, “no”. So

think about the kind of character

qualities you would like to have.

Do you practice these when you

are in public or in front of people

you are trying to impress? Or do

you possess them all the time?

If you notice, I asked do you

practice or possess these quali-

ties. There is a big difference.

God can help you possess them

when you are willing. “Lord, I be-

lieve, Help me in my unbelief!”

Prayer Focus:

Pray for our country to

find unity for the great-

er good. Then God

will heal our land.

“if my people... will humble themselves… I will Hear...forgive.. And heal their land.”

MINISTRY SPOTLIGHT: Small Group Kick-off for the Fall

Small Group Fun is Coming!!

Join a small group and grow in leaps and bounds! Group learning is fun and helps us remember we are not alone in our journey with God. Our Fall series is based on Kyle Idleman”s book: gods at war.

In gods at war, Kyle Idleman, bestselling author of not a fan, helps every believer recognize there are false gods at war within each of us, and they battle for the place of glory and control in our lives. What keeps us from truly following Jesus is that our hearts are pursuing something or someone else. While these pursuits may not be the "graven images" of old, they are in fact modern day idols. Behind the sin you're struggling with, the discourage-ment you're dealing with, the lack of purpose you're living with is a false god

that is winning the war for your heart.

By asking insightful questions, Idleman reveals which false gods each of us are

allowing on the throne of our lives. What do you sacrifice for? What makes you

mad? What do you worry about? Whose applause do you long for? We're all wired for worship, but we often end up valuing and honoring the idols of money, sex,

food, romance, success and many others that keep us from the intimate relationship

with God that we desire. For more
