adopted by the organisation.T hese could be :

1. T he physical infrastructure2. Routine behaviour, langauge, ceremonies3. Gender equality, equity in payment4. Dominant values such as quality, efficiency and so on5. Philosophy that guides the organisation·s policies towards it

Although organisational culture has commoproperties, it is found that large organisations have a dominant culture and anumbe of sub ² cultures. T he core values shared by the majority of theOrganisational members constitute the dominant culture. T herefore, wheneverone refers to the culture of an organisation one actually talks about thedominant culture of an organisation one actually talks about the dominantculture. Subcultures within an organisation are a set of shared understandingsamong members of one

Culturegroup/department/geographic operations. For example, the financedepartment of an organisation may have a sub ² culture which is unique to thisdepartment vis²a²vis other departments. T his means that this department willnot only have the core values of the organisation·s dominant culture but alsosome unique values. If an organisation does not have a dominant culture and iscomprised only of various sub ² cultures, its effectiveness would be difficult to

 judge and there will be no consistency of behaviour among departments.Hence, the aspect of common or shared understanding is an essentialcomponent of organisational culture. Also, organisational culture exisat variouslevels.
