THE NARRATIVE OF A MEDIA TEXT The narrative is an important part of

a media text (music video, film trailer and many others)

The narrative within a media text takes a very formal structure. The narrative is also known as the story/ plot the media text is based around.

So the narrative plays a large part in letting audiences understand the media text through the use of video and recordings as well as the lyrics.

THE NARRATIVE AS A STRUCTURE Bordwell and Thompson (1997) came up with the

structure of narrative. STORY

EXAMPLES OF NARRATIVE We studied the music video (The Beautiful South// Song

for whoever) and how the narrative develops. As the video progresses there are two different settings

that in which are evident (the recording studio and the actual performance element of the video)

The video follows the process of a band trying to find a star and moulding them to fit the needs of their band.

The music video is self-re flexive throughout and in which the main character is aware of ones self in a media text.

The use of non- diegetic material in this music video ‘I think we’ve got a hit, now we need a star’ just adds extra relevance to the video, and explains what the actors are thinking.
