The Great MYTH of “Selling Out” in the Martial Arts School BusinessA Message from NAPMA CEO Stephen Oliver:

I’d like to address something two things right up front. Let’s make sure we’re on the “same page” on this one.

There have been some groups in our industry that have run around teaching “high-pressure” sales techniques, and advising school owners to cash everyone out, never worry about student service, and that the only key to success was how big a contract you could talk someone into pre-paying. If you’ve been approached by any of these hit and run artists, then run, don’t walk, away as quickly as possible. They are responsible for a wave of bankruptsies in the industry, and for another new round of regulators requiring bonding and ever-restrictive policies for what you can and can’t do in your school.

That’s NOT what we are all about.

What we are about is establishing your school to be successfully operating in your community 20, 30 or more years in the same location. We’re about establishing a school where two, or even three, generations from the same family all train in your school, either together, or over a period of years.

On the other end of the spectrum, there’s a MYTH that permeates our industry that you somehow must “sell-out” your values, that you must “water-down” your curriculum, that you must “sell Black Belts” and become a “belt factory” to become financially successful.

While it’s true that some have taken that route to turn a quick-buck, the reality is that we will be modeling only the HIGHEST quality instructors who produce the most physically gifted Black Belts.

In order to really grow a substantial school, we will teach you how to IMPROVE your student quality; how to strengthen your martial arts roots; how to stand up tall and be proud about the quality of your students; how to make an income that allows you to put your kids through college, and allows you to live in a lifestyle that you desire.

Not only do you NOT have to lose your identity as a martial artist, or water down your curriculum to be successful, the opposite is true. What’s required of you is to truly be, or become the highest quality Master Instructor, and to truly produce students that you can be proud of in every way.

The necessary steps to growing as a professional school owner is to professionalize ev-erything you do. Become increasingly effective as a professional teacher. And “master the martial arts business’ to the same level that you’ve mastered the martial arts. That means learning how to effectively attract students to your school. Learn-ing how to exert leadership and influence to have them join your school and commit to training long-term. It means next providing the highest quality service to perpetuate the word of mouth marketing that’s so crucial to any school and attract friends and family members, and ultimately to serve several generations within your community.

Stephen OliverStephen Oliver, MBA 8th-Degree Black Belt

My student base went from 83 to more than 450 students in less than 9 months!

NAPMA has set me free from head0aches. Each month its new ideas and marketing materials takes away all the guesswork. With NAPMA, my student base went from 83 students to over 450 students in less than 9 months. NAPMA showed me the way. It’s simple, follow the NAPMA guidelines, do a little cut and paste and you’re on your way. Now I spend my time doing what I like to do, and do best...teach. Experience the difference—NAPMA.

From 0 to over 300 students in our first year!

We moved to Santa Barbara where we knew one person and opened up a studio. We decided that it would be a good idea to go to the NAPMA convention and pick up a few ideas. What we found were programs that we could use to build and manage our business, an experienced, professional, helpful NAPMA staff, and other successful martial arts business owners that were happy to share their ideas on how to make a business grow.

We’ve been in business now for a little over a year, have over 300 students and we’re still growing.

For over 30 years I’ve kept my martial arts “sword” sharp by daily training, now I keep my busi-ness “sword” sharp with NAPMA. Thank you NAPMA. We couldn’t have done it without you.

Your monthly support materials are worth 10 times what you charge!

First of all, I would like to thank you and NAPMA for your help. When my wife and I decided to open a martial arts school, we had

practically no business ex-perience. With your monthly business tips, eye-catching ad material, and video sup-port, we’ve grown by leaps and bounds.

When we first joined NAPMA, we had ap-proximately 25 students and were teaching in an old television repair shop out of the city limits. Both my wife and myself were working full-time jobs plus running our school full time.

NAPMA’s advice allowed us to more than double our enrollment and be able to move to a better location.

We cannot begin to thank you enough for helping build the backbone of our dojo. We now have a student base of 130, and have re-cently expanded our school to double the size with a bigger lobby, smoothie bar, and a second classroom currently under construction. This is now our full-time job.

Our plan is to be at 200 stu-dents within this year.

Your monthly support materials are worth 10 times what you charge (maybe I shouldn’t say that). Not only would they help a school just starting out, but also help existing schools by adding new ideas and maintaining retention.

Famous last words: “But my school is different.”Although it’s easy to think, “my school is different,” you’re really mistaken if you think that the ideas, concepts and support materials don’t apply to you. NAPMA has successful members throughout the world, from the U.S. to Australia and the U.K., from South Africa and Costa Rica to Israel and Bahrain.

NAPMA members include successful schools in tiny towns and in Manhattan. And any and all types and sizes of communities in between.

NAPMA has helped schools in any and all styles—MARTIAL ARTS STYLES. Schools that are soft-style and hard-style have loved our program. It doesn’t matter whether you cater to adults, kids, fitness or intense self defense. Each and every type of market, and each and every type of school will benefit.

In just a couple of months recently, we had new members join our team from all of the following cities, towns and countries.

I can proudly report that you have helped me grow into a successful business with two studios, five recreation centers, over 450 students and 11 instructors.

For ten years, I worked out of recreation centers and sports clubs. NAPMA helped me transition from a part-time karate teacher to a full-time karate school owner.

The programs that I currently use in my school, from self-defense to busi-ness software, have come to me through ideas from NAPMA conventions or from membership in NAPMA.

I have been in business for 17 years and a NAPMA member for the past 9 years, I can proudly report that NAPMA has helped me grow into a successful business with two studios, five rec-reations centers, over 450 students and 11 instructors.

I appreciate all that you have done and continue to do to help me with my grow-ing business.

marketing strategies. I also received audio and video resources that sharpened my staff’s management and Martial Arts skills. I would say that my school has brought in more than a million dollars because of NAPMA. I don’t have a big school like some of the gurus in martial arts. In fact, my school was located in basement of bowling alley with only 2,000 sq. feet. NAPMA has taught me that you do not have to have a big school or chain of school to be successful. In fact, I am very confident that my school in the basement was the one of the most profit-able schools in the nation for that size. I think all of this happened because NAPMA has provided my school with the advantages I need to be a successful and profes-sional martial artist.

As a former NAPMA regional director, I have had a unique perspective on the martial arts world. I have witnessed that

the majority of martial arts schools go out of business within only a few short years of being open. If they survive those first few years, many of them barely make enough to pay for their living ex-pense. This is not necessar-

dialogue with members by stephen oliver

A Series of Valuable Lessons…In the July and August Resources Kits, you received parts 1 and 2 of an interview with my instructor Jhoon Rhee. Jeff Smith and I have been associated with Jhoon Rhee for 45 and coming up on 40 years, respectively. If you pay close attention to the interview and the discussions we’ll have at the Extreme Success Academy, then there are many, many lessons to learn from Jhoon Rhee. First, a trivia point, the song, “Nobody Bothers Me,” you heard on the CD was Nils Lofgren. He was a Jhoon Rhee student with Jeff Smith (and myself) in Kensington, MD. He’s now a key member of the “E-Street Band” with Bruce Springsteen (if you see them playing, he’s the shorter guy to Bruce’s left [as you are facing them] with the bandana). In Washington, D.C., you couldn’t go anywhere without people knowing both “Nobody Bothers Me” and USA-1000 [their phone number.)

Anyway, to some lessons…

Lesson 1: early realization that commercial success was necessary. Jhoon Rhee (as well as Bruce Lee) was openly reviled by many in the martial arts community. Both for their “innovation” and their “commercialism.” I recall Black Belt Magazine articles’ debates in the 1960’s: one being “The Case against Commercialism” and another refer-ring to Jhoon Rhee as the Piped Piper of Korean Karate. Upon listening to the interview, I thought I’d clarify one point. You might have gotten the idea that Bruce Lee was “anti-commercial.” Actually the opposite is true. If you look at the letters between the two of them, then you’ll see that Bruce Lee was sending Jhoon Rhee advertising from Chuck Norris and others for karate schools and was very interested in the business aspects. However, Bruce Lee decided that his path to wealth was acting, not operating martial arts schools. Jhoon Rhee made the opposite decision. I’ve talked with Grand Master Rhee about this goals statement that Bruce Lee wrote. Jhoon Rhee was actually on the phone with him at the time. Clearly neither Bruce Lee nor Jhoon Rhee had “hang-ups” about whether they should be making money from martial arts. Jhoon Rhee described it to me in two ways: first, it’s impossible to accomplish much of anything with-out financial resources. Second, if you are providing a great service, then you deserve to be well compensated.

“My Definite Chief Aim:

I, Bruce Lee, will be the highest paid Oriental superstar in the United States. In return I will give the most exciting performances and render the best of quality in the capacity of an actor. Starting in 1970, I will achieve world fame and from then onward till the end of 1980, I will have in my possession $10,000,000. Then I will live the way I please and achieve inner harmony and peace.”

Bruce Lee, January 1969

Lesson 2: The Master-Mind effect. You heard a little bit about the people that Jhoon Rhee surrounded himself with. I can tell you from personal experience that his peer group and “Master-Mind” group was not the other guys run-ning schools who were failing and making excuses. Who was he associating with? Well, other than Bruce Lee, he was associating with a large group of congressmen and senators; he affiliated with smart and wealthy people ranging from Jack Anderson to Tony Robbins. He brought Nick Cokinos (EFC founder) into the martial arts business (as well as myself, Jeff Smith and others). He was constantly seeking out others who could contribute to his goals and who could

Greetings from the Kingdom of Bahrain!

When I first joined NAPMA I had less than 50 students, today I have close to 250! I think NAPMA is a great organization and is a great window into the professional martial arts industry for those of us who live far from the US.

The style of martial arts I teach is called Zen-Do Kickboxing. Zen-Do Bahrain is probably the largest school in the Middle East. My NAPMA membership has

Hong Kong. After little success break-ing into the Hong Kong martial arts film industry, Van Damme felt it was time to take on Hollywood.

Arriving on American soil in 1982, Van Damme possessed the requisite good looks and persistent attitude to succeed—unfortunately, he knew no languages other than French and Flemish. In corporating the elegance of ballet into his karate, Van Damme has transcended the brute force of the martial arts genre. Yet it was karate, the actor says, which helped him focus on and achieve his movie-making dreams.

Van Damme made his feature film debut starring in Cannon Film’s 1988 release Bloodsport. Numerous studio films followed, the success of this Belgian can be traced to his ability to appeal to all ages and genders and his larger-than-life image that captures the imagination of moviego-ers worldwide.

Evander HolyfieldFormer undisputed heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield brings a quiet dignity to a sport that is sometimes preoc-

cupied with empty flash and false bravado.Heart, courage and toughness have al-

ways been words affiliated with great box-ing champions, but no one in the history of the sport has possessed these traits in greater measure than “The Real Deal”. 42 wins, 8 losses, 2 draws, 27 KOs. First and only four-time Heavyweight Champion and 1984 Olympic Medallist.

Jim Thomas Put himself through law school at William & Mary by teaching karate, working as a bouncer and a dorm manager, and earning academic

scholarships. He was elected editor-in-chief of the William & Mary Law Review and was named the Outstanding Law Graduate of the Class of 1976. Thomas served as Evander Holyfield’s attorney, boxing management adviser and close friend. Jim Thomas was at Evander Holyfield’s side on a daily basis as his attorney, adviser, close friend and confidant. The Holyfield Way is an eyewitness

account, along with Holyfield’s own personal reflections, of one of the most successful, relentless, and sometimes controversial athletes of his era.

Experience life behind the scenes of boxing as a firsthand observer inside the Holyfield camp, and watch the story of Holyfield’s perseverance unfold as the “Humble Warrior” fights on.

Tom HopkinsTom Hopkins is a sales legend. Quick to admit that his early sales career was not successful, Tom immersed himself in profes-

sional training and became a dedicated student, internalizing and refining sales techniques which enabled him to become THE sales leader in his industry. Wanting to share his knowledge and experience with others, Tom became a pioneer in bringing broadcast-quality audio and video training to the marketplace. His video sales training systems are utilized in-house by hundreds of companies around the world. His audio programs have long been lauded for their quality, comprehen-siveness and workbooks with word-for-word phraseology.

His first book, How to Master the Art of Selling, has sold over 1.4 million copies and is used as a text book in sales and market-ing classes. It is required reading for new salespeople by sales and management pro-fessionals in a wide variety of industries.

Suddenly it hit me that there is so much information in there, it really isn’t necessary to invest in any other marketing materials, martial art or otherwise!

I just have to tell you this. I’m getting myself ready for Valentine’s promotions, so I decided to look at the NAPMA February (package) for additional ideas. But I get caught up reading some of the other material in the package.

I’m just thinking, “What if I had REALLY been using this material over the past 10 years? Where would my school be today?”

I feel reborn! Dwight Woods Miami, Florida

UP 40% from 2007!I AM ON TRACK! My

enrollment hit 310 yesterday which was my June 1st goal! I set income and enrollment goals last year for this year. I have been blowing past my financial goals (which were based on about 33% growth over 2007 even though I was steady between 2006-2007. I have had a very strong financial year. My YTD goal was $215,887 but, in fact, I hit $261,584! That’s 20% over goal! Last year (for the first 5 months) I had made only $185,899, which is 40% growth!!! Thank you guys so much for your help! For the first time I can remember, I had people come and ask me for an upgrade. Very empow-ering. So: Here is what I have learned—that despite the unexpected—Stephen Oliver and Dan Kennedy were right in their predictions I raised my prices, increased my volume, increased my clos-ing rate and decreased my complaints about money and have people upgrading into even more expensive pro-grams even when consumer confidence is supposedly low.

WOW! This is cool! Thanks again guys. You

I doubled the size of my school in two months!

Our active enrollment was 123 students. With the help of NAPMA Little Ninjas preschool program and the Ultimate Body Shaping Course, I grew my school to 254 students. The momentum continued with 35 new students that March. My school leaped to the next level and the momentum has driven us to even greater successes.

Not only does it give each Little Ninja something to focus on every day, but it also gives him a reward each day ( belt stripe or stickers and applause ). It also causes the instructor to focus on each child indi-vidually each day instead of looking at them as just a sea of eyes and bodies. They fo-cus on individuals. The Little Ninjas program creates a special moment for each student everyday.

Comments: I have tried

the business of martial arts, and with a manage-ment company. I must say that my livelihood is much better with the company helping me out. I have been a NAPMA member and have attended all their seminars and conventions. I went from a 200-student school to a 400-student school since joining with NAPMA.

Blanks opened a fitness center in Los Angeles to teach his new workout, attracting celebrity clients such as Paula Abdul. The popular-ity of the workout quickly grew, becoming a pop culture phenomenon after Blanks began releasing mass-marketed videos.

Jeff Smith, former World Kickboxing Champion, Mile High Karate Chief Instructor and NAPMA Regular Contributor

I must say I sleep better at night not having to worry about every little detail that goes on. My classes are better now that I am constantly motivated. I don’t need to pick my own brain now that I have professional consultants and people to network from. The entire NAPMA staff is the most professional in this field. But don’t take my word for it, ask any NAPMA member and I’m sure they would say the same!

We should be at 300 students by the end of October and are on track for 350–400 by the end of the year.

If I hadn’t started NAPMA’s Fitness Kickboxing I’d still be working a job. If I hadn’t started Little Ninjas and the UBC I’d still be just getting by. I became a mem-ber before I even opened the doors to my school and I’m thankful that I did. Without the great new ideas and help from NAPMA I know all this wouldn’t have happened! Thank you, NAPMA!

cut out for me. Starting with 60 students and most of their tuition already cashed out, bartered, or late, the school had a gross income of a whopping $6,000 per month! As an immediate call to action I pulled a secret weapon out from under my sleeve...my action plan. I got to work right away by apply-ing all that I learned from my mentors at NAPMA. In mar-tial arts, we generally learn stances first to establish a strong foundation to build up to learning the basics. The first six months was stance training! I implemented a billing service to get tuition on track. The curriculum was burned and revamped to suit the needs of a modern mar-tial art student from children to adults and, no I did not sell out or comprise the integrity of my style! I got to work on getting my rear in gear with personal develop-ment such as goal setting and time management.

A lot of these things we had in place already but there is an enormous difference in doing things and doing things right. Six months later the school was generating cash flow and it was time to keep statistics. The monthly total gross now up to double digits before the comma $13,284.89! Growing to 182 students later that year, I moved the school to a new location, $12,922.19 then $16,498.64 monthly gross, I built a monster and it was growing. Year two, the monthly gross peaked at $25,760.44, and I was drawing a paycheck and had long moved out of my locker room sleeping days. Each year I attended the NAPMA Conference and returned for the next round of rolling up my sleeves and getting busy.

Long story short,

my school grosses on average $23,651.24, my personal income is well over $100,000.00 per year and I look forward to coming to work each day, I love what I do! I now have disability insurance, life insurance, health insurance, IRA’s, an increasing net worth, $0 debt; and it has only been 3 1 ⁄2 years later. I enjoy my involvement in our commu-nity, I get to train 2 hours per day in my martial arts just in my personal practice before classes start in the morning, not to mention positively impacting the lives of others all day long. I continue to

utilize my NAPMA knowledge applying as much as I can from each package.

nization, our school would climb a little and then sink back down. Needless to say, we were growing very frustrated. No one was help-ing us. Then we heard about NAPMA. We left that other organization, found a new billing company and became NAPMA members. Since joining NAPMA we have left our old location, which was approximately 1,000 sq. feet and opened up in a prime new location with 3,000 sq. feet and have been there for over 2 years now. Our num-bers have also increased! We went from having approxi-mately 60 ac-tive students to now over 200 active students, and still growing!

We have also enjoyed belonging to the NAPMA Member Forum, which is a great resource! And we have learned so much from all the wonderful people we have been able to network with through this medium. From almost Day 1 with NAPMA, we have always felt like we were part of a family! We feel like everyone is right there for us and not some obscure figure somewhere. People at NAPMA are REAL people who are always there to help us.

We cannot say enough about NAPMA and the won-derful things NAPMA has done for our school.

Week 1

“The only kind of dignity which is genuine is that which

is not diminished by the indifference of others.”

Dag Hammarskjold, Swedish statesman and former

secretary-general of the United Nations (1905–1961)

Translation for Adults

If you have a proper sense of dignity, then it can’t be

“diminished” by others. You know that you deserve

respect, even when you don’t receive it. If you always

judge yourself as others view you, then you can never

be happy. You will always be trying to fulfill their

expectations and image of you. If you have a proper

sense of self-respect, then you can be yourself and

unconcerned how others think of you.

Translation for Kids

Dignity means that you know you deserve the respect

of others. People can be disrespectful in different

ways: making fun of you, calling you names or not

including you in a game or group of people. If you

have a good sense of dignity, then you can be yourself

no matter what other people say or think of you. Don’t

be dishonest with yourself, just to be a part of a group.

Those in the group won’t know the real you and you’ll

spend all your effort trying to be someone you’re not.

People that force you to change to be their friends

aren’t worthy friends.

Class Discussion for Kids

1. How do you show your dignity?

2. How is dignity helpful when people make fun of

you?

Week 2

“Remember this—that there is a proper dignity and

proportion to be observed in the performance of every

act of life.”Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, one of the most

respected Roman emperors (121–180 AD)

Translation for Adults

It can sometimes be very difficult to give your all to a

task or responsibility. After a very long week, you may

feel tired at work on Friday and must really concentrate

to give your best effort. By not working to the best of

your abilities, however, you are only cheating yourself.

At the end of every day, you should be proud of what

you accomplished, including the everyday tasks, such as

waking early, exercising before work and arriving home

in time to make dinner for your family. If you are proud

of what you do, then you’ll have no regrets later.

Translation for Kids

There is a certain dignity that comes with being a

Black Belt. To uphold this dignity, you must know what

it means to be a Black Belt: you must be disciplined,

confident and respectful. Is it OK to be disciplined,

confident and respectful only in your martial arts class,

once you’re a Black Belt? Of course not; you must act

like a Black Belt all the time, even if you are still work-

ing hard for your Black Belt. You’ll be showing your

parents and instructor that you are learning Black Belt

principles and using them throughout your life.

Class Discussion for Kids

1. How do you show others that you have a Black Belt

attitude?2. When should you have a Black Belt attitude?

Revenue with Print-On-

Demand Technology,

Part 1By Lloyd Brown III

[Editor’s Note: Various digital technologies have become use-

ful, almost required, tools for even the smallest businesses.

It’s difficult to operate any size business, without a com-

puter, Internet access, a cell phone, PDA, etc. Now, print-on-

demand (POD) technology has reached a price point that

allows almost anyone, business owner and individual, to

publish small quantities of books or similar bound materials.

This could be a very significant development for the martial

arts industry, as Lloyd Brown explains in this compelling and

comprehensive Black Belt Technology Report.]

POD in the Dojo: How to Make Digital

Technology Work for You

If you operate a commercial martial arts school, then

you almost certainly have a pro shop or catalog in

which you sell martial arts gear. You have a core of loyal

students who respect your opinion on what to buy

when it comes to martial arts gear. You might be part

of a chain of schools, a governing body or a close-knit

community of local schools. You might host seminars

and demonstrations or offer self-defense courses. In

short, you have what book publishers call a platform.

A platform is a potential customer base for selling

books, manuals, guides and other printed materials.

Print-on-demand (POD) technology makes it possible

for even inexperienced authors to print small quantities

of a book with low or no out-of-pocket costs. All you

need is the contents of a book.

What Is POD?

Printing on demand is a publishing term that refers to

the printing of small quantities, generally using digital

printing technology. Commercial publishers print

thousands of copies of a book at a time, using offset

printing. An offset printer makes metal plates, from

which the pages of a book are printed. These plates are

very durable, and can be used again, making individual

copies cheap. The high initial cost to make the plates

means, however, that copies must be printed in the

hundreds or thousands to reduce the per-unit cost to a

reasonable rate.

Digital printing is similar to your office or computer

printer. You click on the “Print” icon and a copy is

printed. With digital printing, you can print 25, 10 or

even one at a time, drastically reducing your out-of-

pocket costs. The advantage is the ability to self-publish

your books with minimal expense.

Types of Books

If you’re willing to consider producing a book for your

school, then what might you write? You don’t want

to create a negative impression with your students

or promote the idea that you’re bilking them for

more money. The contents of the book must provide

value for your students or for your pro shop’s walk-in

customers. I’ve provided a few examples below, but

let your imagination wander and you might think of a

much better book idea just for your school.

You could write the history of your dojo or style. You

could include background information about your style

and your school, and biographical information about

your instructors. These books tend to be very short.

Such a book might profile the life of the instructor,

becoming more of a memoir and less of a history.

Beware of these; memoirs are notoriously poor sellers.

Writing them might be therapeutic, but they’re rarely

marketable.

You might wish to write a book on self-defense,

emphasizing your style’s techniques. These books

should cover avoidance of violent situations and topics

other than the actual self-defense techniques. You’ll

BLACK BELT LEADERSHIPGUIDANCE ON LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

A Different Kind of Self-DefenseBy NAPMA Member Gary Engels“Karate is a defensive art from beginning to end.”Gichin Funakoshi

You are an instructor of self-defense. You may even be the owner of a school of self-defense. You teach self-defense against physical assaults. Did you know that physical assaults account for less than 1% of all life-threatening incidents in the United States?

This G.O.L.D. Leadership Team Report will help you educate your team on the different aspect of self-defense in your school and community. It’s important, as a martial arts school in today’s society, to address not only self-defense against physical assaults, but also to teach self-defense against mediocrity, anger issues, bad relationships and poor self-esteem. Self-defense is just as real and as important today in the martial arts as it was thousands of years ago. As martial arts instructors, we can’t forget that we’ve evolved dramatically and so should our self-defense courses. If your martial arts students and your G.O.L.D. Leadership Team members are solely learning self-defense against physical assaults, than you are only protecting them from a very small percentage of the dangers that they face today. Educate your G.O.L.D. Leadership TeamAs future leaders, your GOLD team needs to understand how to protect themselves from the

real dangers of today’s society. Your students are more likely to be hurt deeper and hurt longer by

negative opinions from others, unhealthy eating, inactivity, low self-esteem, heart disease, lack of drive and determination, and obesity than by any type of physical attack. I must stress that the martial arts techniques you teach your students are absolutely necessary, so they can defend themselves from physical attacks; but how often are they physically attacked? As prepared martial artists, we need to practice against both physical and emotional attacks to understand totally the essence of our martial arts training. How often are your students faced with people who try to challenge your students’ self-esteem? How often do your students choose the unhealthy treat instead of the healthy snack? Do your students overeat and how much time do they spend in front of a video game or the TV? How often do your students choose to perform at level 4 instead of level 10?Martial arts are just as much about character development and transformation, as about punching

and kicking. In that respect, use this G.O.L.D. Leadership Team Report as the basis of a good discussion about some key facts and important concepts that your team members can implement in their lives, immediately. Your G.O.L.D. Leadership Team is the perfect place to instill these traits in your student base. Let your G.O.L.D. Leadership Team “infect” everyone with positive habits and healthy behaviors that will save their lives in the long run. Key Facts You Must Know

Turnkey Promotion for Owners and Operators

Generate a Fantastic Flood of Leads and Community Goodwill with a Bully-Proof School PresentationIntroductionIt’s no secret that your local academic school system

is a fantastic source of leads, but it can often be a

tough nut to crack. School administrators have been

traditionally reluctant and wary of relationships with

businesses that the administrators view as having

only one purpose: to take advantage of the school

environment to more easily sell products and services

to students and their families.Because establishing a mutually beneficial relationship

with your local school system can be difficult, it may

take some time; it depends on the school district’s

policies and the individuals involved—and your efforts. You may be able to convince your local school

administrators, during the next 30 days, to permit you

to make your Bully-Proof presentation at the beginning

of the 2008-2009 school year. It could also take a

number of months or the better part of a year, so don’t

be discouraged, if your first or even second efforts are

not successful.

Big Goals Require the Proper MindsetThe first secret to penetrate your local school system is

your mindset. As a professional martial artist and local

school owner, you are uniquely positioned to offer

the local school administrators a service that virtually

no other business owner in your community can provide: teaching children personal safety habits and

techniques. These could include physical self-defense,

bully-avoidance, anti-abduction, Internet predators

and general safety in the home, at school, on a bike, at

Halloween, etc. When you list the many safety and self-defense topics you teach, it’s clear that your curriculum is just

as extensive and in-depth as the reading, writing,

arithmetic, history, geography, etc. that are taught in

that other school building down the street. In other words, don’t sell yourself short! Think of yourself as a school because you are a school! Think

of yourself as an equal to any academic school! You

have a much greater probability of penetrating your

local school system, when you first approach those

administrators and teachers, if you have a positive

attitude and the confidence that you will be speaking

with equals. After all, you don’t want to sell anything to the school

system like the salesman trying to win the vending

machine contract. You want to volunteer your time

and expertise to support overworked teachers and

overburdened administrators—as a colleague and

fellow teacher.Of course, you can’t be arrogant—you must think and

act like a professional, and a concerned citizen, who

can teach children certain knowledge and skills (which

the school system does not typically offer) that they

should learn—and there’s no contract to negotiate for

your expertise because it won’t cost the school system

a dime!

Becoming a Recognized Safety Expert in Your CommunityPenetrating your local academic school system is not

usually a one-step, overnight strategy. In most cases,

it will take some time and effort and a multi-layered

strategy, but it’s well worth it. The process is just like

what you teach your students about goal setting:

know what you want, make a plan and then take massive action. In the best of all worlds, your first action would have

taken place well in advance of when you first plan

to communicate with your local school officials. As

mentioned above, you could start a relationship with your local school system with one phone call or

meeting, but your credibility will be much stronger

if you have already established yourself as a personal

Maintaining a high level of motivation is often a

challenge for many school owners; however, listening

to this interview with the legendary motivational speaker, Zig Ziglar, will

energize you to make important changes in your professional and personal life.

Mr. Ziglar recommends that you keep a journal with daily comments about how your teaching

has had positive effects on your students’ lives. By reading

and reviewing those comments, regularly, you’ll find new

sources of motivation to help students change their lives.

Mr. Ziglar also states that retention is really a matter of

building relationships with students. Ask your students about

their lives to help you train each individual student better and

convince them that you genuinely care about them.

According to Mr. Ziglar, developing goal-setting habits

is more than writing a list of goals (although you should

do that, too); it is also learning to manage your time

more efficiently and effectively, so you have the time to

accomplish all you want to do and be.

YOUR MARTIAL ARTS SCHOOL

NAPMA has been there with me from the beginning-from how to choose a location, to systems for tracing enroll-ments and retention, to special events, and really effective “NON-BLACK BELT EYES” ads.

NAPMA has been there with me, every step of the way, as I grew to over 300 students and completed an expansion literally doubling my mat space. But best of all, NAPMA encouraged me to truly value the character development skills I teach and to price the training accordingly. Without that encouragement, I’m sure I couldn’t be where I am today.

NAPMA is great at helping school owners to do their best because NAPMA is the BEST!

Between nine months and one year of joining NAPMA, my martial arts school has tripled in size.

I opened my martial arts school in Bermuda two years ago and struggled to find and keep a core of students focused on training. About a year ago, I found NAPMA on the Web and contemplated whether I should join this or-ganization, because so many organizations promise they will help you achieve your goals, and they never fulfill their end or there is always a catch. So I bit the bullet, and enrolled in the NAPMA program. Between nine months and one year of join-ing NAPMA, my martial arts school has tripled in size and has a student base more fo-cused and excited about the benefits of joining a martial arts school. The monthly material that NAPMA sends you is guaranteed to work if you read it, study it and apply it. This is the only true industry that can target life skills development in our children and adults. Any serious martial arts school owner should strongly con-sider joining NAPMA if they want to make a living in the

Explosively Growing Your Student EnrollmentWe’re firm believers in the Parthenon Principle of Marketing your martial arts school. That is, using many, many methods of generating leads and refer-rals for new students, including direct response marketing, about internal referral generating systems, about buying and using various external media, and about every conceivable productive way to generate new students.

This knowledge has been hard-won over the years by NAPMA’s profes-sional staff and members, and we will share it all with you during the course of your NAPMA membership.

Here’s a visual of the Parthenon Principle of Marketing, and just a few of the ways NAPMA members are successfully generating tons of new students for their schools on a daily basis. And you’ll learn how to implement this system in your own school!

For marketing, the public schools are distributing our NAPMA flyers to all the kids EVERY MONTH.

I take ONE copy to the school and they re-copy and distribute to the kids. It helps that I went to school there and hung around with the current teachers. At the local 3A football games where my former NASKA rated nephew, now a senior, attends and plays on the team, they promote the new studio over the p.a. system.

I gave free three-month lesson packets as rewards for academic performances for the grade school kids, donated free months of les-sons for less fortunate kids at another school and have promised to do a Tony Rob-bins FIREWALK fund-raiser for the elementary school when my studio reaches 100 active! I did a Firewalk for Tyson’s computer program-mers earlier in October.

We give out VIP Passes everywhere we go. We have an information box out front of the construction site with helpful info and schedules of classes...all 31 or more classes that we offer. We have several future newspaper ads ready to run, thanks to NAPMA. The local newspaper previously ran a 1/3-page story on the new business coming to town complete with phone number and address. I also hung out with the reporter’s uncle a few years ago! He promised to come back when we open, too.

The phone is ringing....calls from future students as far away as Bentonville, (35 miles) requesting an open-ing date.

We are ready to get the ball rolling and want to say a great big “THANK YOU” to NAPMA for your incredibly

Marketing Activities Each Month to Draw New Students to Your SchoolThere are hundreds of ways to generate new students for your school, and we’ll be’ll be teaching you many of them. You must have MULTIPLE refer-ral systems in place, and must be continually participating in community outreach activities. You must learn to intelligently invest your resources in paid advertising and direct mail to grow your school effectively.

But we don’t talk and teach these things: we provide you with the resourc-es you need to accomplish just those goals. We’ll be teaching you a range of promotional activities and plans—and, in many cases, giving you the com-plete artwork that you can personalize and print for your school to help you implement right away. Each month in your Basic Resource Toolkit, you’ll receive information about new marketing plans and tools, and continu-ously at our member web site, you’ll find a constantly changing and updated library of resources. Here’s just a sample of the types of marketing campaigns we provide for you to use “as is,” or pull-apart to customize as you wish.

Stephen Oliver NAPMA CEO

Stephen Oliver has been a fixture in the Martial Arts Business for more than 30 years.

He began train-ing with the father of American Tae Kwon Do, Jhoon Rhee, in

1969. His instructors include former World Kickboxing Champion Jeff Smith and many other legends of the martial arts.

He began teaching in 1974, and worked his way through a business degree and MBA at George-town University, working as a branch manager with Jhoon Rhee, Jeff Smith, Nick Cokinos and Ned Muffly. In 1983, he founded Mile High Ka-rate, opening five schools in 18 months, and by age 25, owned a $1,000,000-plus school organization with 1,500-plus students.

Oliver has also co-authored No BS Wealth for Entrepreneurs with Dan Kennedy, and has writ-ten several books for martial arts schools, includ-ing: Direct Response Marketing for Martial Arts Schools, Using the Internet to Market Your Martial Arts School and Everything I Wish I Knew When I Was 22. He currently holds an 8th-Degree Black Belt ranking in American Tae Kwon Do.

Rob Colasanti NAPMA President

A teenager’s passion for the martial arts has become a professional’s quest to raise the standards of the industry, help instruc-tors integrate tradition with innovation and

The NAPMA kits you send out monthly are a godsend to schools both small and large.

I am a direct response marketer and dojo owner and have for the last eight years helped to produce a perennial top ten infomer-cial, which is an industry leader and top performer.

Your audio CD series is innovative and informative and the rest of the package is top notch as well. All of these kudos point to the kind of visionary leadership backed by a strong support team that was needed to honorably rekindle my faith and TRUST in NAPMA.

I thank you all for the hard work you have done to reach this point and look with interest to the future of marketing and networking in the martial arts—NAPMA.
