Wine release party Napa Valley College Napa Valley Vintners’ Teaching Winery will be the site of a ‘May Fair’ wine release party May 15 from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. The following wines will be released: 2011 Estate Sauvignon Blanc - $18, 2010 Estate Syrah - $25, 2010 Estate Chardonnay - $25, 2010 Estate Pinot Noir - $30, and 2009 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon - $35. Sponsors will be recognized and south campus arts will be showcased in the winery. It is free and open to the public. MESA awards Mathematics, Engineering & Science Achievement (MESA) awards will be presented in the Library Community Room May 17 at 5:30 p.m. Scholarship ceremony The annual Scholarship ceremony staged by the Napa Valley College Foundation will be held May 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center (PAC) Main Theater. The 69th annual Napa Valley College Commencement ceremony takes place May 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the Gym. Because of limited seating capacity in the gym, this year students graduating will be given 6 tickets for family and friends. The next Police Academy Graduation ceremony takes place June 9 at 10 a.m. in the Gym. Professor of English Andrea Bewick was named 2012 McPherson Distinguished Teacher at Napa Valley College. The award was presented May 11. She earned her B.A. from the University of Michigan and her M.F.A. from the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop. She was awarded a Stegner Fellowship in Creative Writing at Stanford University in 1997. Bewick has been teaching full-time at Napa Valley College since 2000 and serves as Managing Director of NVC’s Napa Valley Writers’ Conference and is the English Department coordinator. She has served as a negotiator for the Faculty Association. The many nomination forms indicate a deep respect for her from her colleagues. In addition to her teaching skills and focus on students, she was cited for her integrity, leadership, and gener- osity of spirit. “Andrea is committed to student-based learning…the payoff for her trust-building efforts was a classroom of students who were curious, engaged and committed to the course,” said one nomina- tion, describing her work in a class containing a high percentage of disabled students. “Andrea loves all aspects of the writing pro- cess and is deeply committed to sharing her knowledge and skills with her students. She is flexible, collegial, and dedicated to the teaching profession.” Another nomination said, “In her teaching, she demonstrates creativity, compassion and rigor, all of which serve to empower students.” Her work with the Jessamyn West Creative Writing Contest and the Napa Valley Writers’ Conference won praise. “Because of her own august background in fiction writing—she attended the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and is a Stanford Stegner Fellow—she has been instrumental in attracting and maintaining the best and brightest talent for the conference.” “Smart, caring, innovative, motivated and disciplined, Andrea has had a positive impact on our campus,” concluded another nomination. The awards, established by NVC’s founding president Dr. Harry McPherson in 1987, recognize excellence in teaching, knowledge of subject matter, stimulation of student thought and interest, use of innovative teaching techniques, and significant contributions to developing the instructional program. Dance & Voice PerformancesLet’s Dance May 11 & 12The Napa Valley College Dance program will present

their annual dance production in the Little Theater at 8 p.m. May 11 and 12, and at 2 p.m. May 12. The theme is “Just Dance.” It is reserved seating. Tickets are now on sale at the Little Theater Box Office and unsold tickets will be available at the door one hour prior to performance. Voice Recital May 12The student Voice Recital will be at 8 p.m. May 12

in the PAC main theater. It is free and open to the public.

Caps and gowns are currently available in the Napa Valley College Bookstore. The price including sales tax is $33. Preprinted com-mencement announcements are available for $1.25 each or personalized announcements can be ordered direct from Balfour.

The buyback of used books will be May 21-25; hours Monday through Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Spring Semester textbook rentals are due back to the bookstore by May 25. Students will be charged replacement and processing fees for rentals not returned by noon May 29.

Small Business Development Center honored with nomination

The Napa Valley College SBDC has been nominated for the Napa Chamber / Mechanics Bank Community Awards Non-profit Organization of the Year award. The award will be announced May 24. Bookstore selling graduation gowns

Lori Welty, Magnet lead teacher from Salvador Visual and Performing Arts School, arranged to bring 30 fifth

graders to Napa Valley College to see the Holocaust exhibit in the Library. They were accompanied by

parents and also enjoyed a brief campus tour. The Jewish Historical Society of Napa Valley is hosting

the exhibit, “Courage To Remember,” at NVC through the end of the month.
