NANO MACHINES

NANOMACHINES – THE FUTURE?

• With need for stronger metals, semi counductors, and other devices.• One possible way would be using nanomachines• Rearranging molecules at the atomic level to create stronger

materials• i.e. carbon nanotubes,

WHAT ARE NANO-MACHINES

• Nanomachines are devices built from individual atoms.• Size of each individual part are measured in

nanometers(nm • The size of the actual machines themselves measure 0.1

– 10 micrometers (um)• Essentially molecules that behave in a particular pattern.

BACKGROUND

• Nanotech• First mentioned 1959 by American Physicist Richard

Feynman

• Came to wide spread knowledge within the scientific community by the 1980s and 1990s• K. Eric Drexler• Pioneer in the field• See thesis:

• Nanosystems: Molecular Machinery, Manufacturing, and Computation

JOHN VON NEUMANN

• Physicist and Mathamatical Genius• 1940s toyed with the idea of self replicating space craft

as how we would explore the universe• The computer would follow its programming

• Go to one world• Replicate 10• Repeat

• With Nanotechnolgy it would seem possible for this idea to be possible

• It seems too good to be true!!!

FROM CLASSIC TO MODERN

Classic

• Seems farfetched• Machines as small as

atoms?

Modern

• Proof of particles smaller then neutrons• Quarks• Leptons

Page 7: Nanomachine Presentations

PROBLEMS

• How can we build machines out of atoms? • How do we control the supply and prevent one of

the possible scenarios:• Grey Goop world• Unintentional release of a virus into a populace• Military grade warfare

Page 8: Nanomachine Presentations

EXPERIMENTS IN NANOTECH

• Carbon nanotubes• Radushkevich and Lukyanovich publish a paper in the

Soviet Journal of Physical Chemistry • 1952

• Oberlin, Endo and Koyama report CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) growth of nanometer-scale carbon fibers• 1976

CONCLUSION

• More and more fields of science getting involved in nanotech research it proves the viability of nanomachines.
