WS 8:30-10:00 am Gen Eng 2H Multi-culturalism in Zamboanga City: How to promote Unity in Diversity Zamboanga City has a variety of cultural types; we have badjaos, samals, yakans, tausugs, chavacanos, bisayans and etc... And with this fact, unity between these cultures sometimes is inconceivable. Each culture, though sometimes have in common is definitely unique from each other. The difference between each culture may lead to conflicting ideas and may result to misunderstanding that possibly can cause into more terrifying event. Thus we need solution/s to preclude whatever the difference of each other may result to. We need unity, but how? Everything is possible, so did Unity. Unity between each culture may be possible by having knowledge of each culture, understand and respect one another. To prove this, I’ll tell my own experience. Since, I’m a tausug, I once called into question by my curious circle of friend about tausug’s wedding customs, wherein a man must pay dowry to the family of the woman he’s going to marry because if not, there will be no a wedding to happen. They seem to find it unusual; they perceive it as if the family of woman is selling their daughter to the man she’s going to marry and that’s a cruel thing to do as a parent or family, but before it may lead to further misconception, I explained to them to reason behind it. A man is to give dowry for it signifies his wealth, wealth that is to sustain. If he can afford the demanded dowry it means he’s ready to have his own family and has a capacity to sustain life. Upon knowing this, my friends finally understand and able to respect. This incident may seem a small event but great things always start in smaller things first. In summary, we are all equal no matter what our difference our thus, we must unite and unity can be gain in if we a have knowledge of each culture so may understand, to lessen the misconception and respect whatever our culture is.
