News: General Motors India exit leaves dealers, customers in a quandary With

monthly average sales of less than 900 vehicles, General Motors (GM) has been a laggard in the Indian market. On 28 April, General Motors India wrote to its 150-some dealers, asking them to prepare for the launch of the new generation Beat, a small car. billionaire Ajay Piramal wants to sell mortgages and build affordable homes as the drugs-to-data conglomerate seeks to ride an estimated $1.3 trillion housing-investment boom.

Great Eastern Shipping Company announced that the debenture issue committee has approved raising up to Rs150 crore via issuance of non- convertible debentures.

Chemical firm SRF Ltd on Tuesday reported 16% increase in consolidated net profit at Rs 129 crore for the fourth quarter ended March.

Country’s largest car maker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) is eyeing sales in the range of 2.5 million units to 3 million units per annum post 2020. The company, which sold 1.56 million units last fiscal, expects to achieve the target on the back of favourable economy and government policies

The GST Council’s decision to set 18% tax rate for solar modules as compared to a present effective rate of zero will increase overall project costs by about 12%.

Oil prices were firm on Tuesday on the expectation that an Opec-led production cut would be extended to next March, but analysts said economic slowdown was clouding the mid-term outlook for crude markets. Brent crude futures were up 3 cents from their last close at $53.86 per barrel. US WTI crude futures were at $51.16, up 3 cents. Both benchmarks have risen over 10 percent from their May lows early this month.

Jindal Steel and Power Ltd. shares fell even as losses narrowed in the three months ended March as revenue grew more than estimated. The Navin Jindal-led firm trimmed its losses to Rs 100 crore from Rs 635.80 crore in the same quarter last year, according to its stock exchange filing. This was partly on account of an exceptional gain of Rs 253 crore in the quarter. The one-time gain represents a reversal of impairment loss of fixed assets in one of the overseas subsidiaries, JSPL said in its filing. The consensus estimate of analysts tracked by Bloomberg had pegged the loss at Rs 431 crore.

The ministry of defence has cleared a new policy that looks to boost private participation in the sector but the first contract may not be awarded till 2019. The Defence Acquisition Policy, which will now go to the Cabinet Committee on Security headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has four strategic segments – single engine fighter aircraft, helicopters, submarines and armoured fight vehicles/main battle tanks. Each segment will have one strategic partner and one original equipment maker (OEM). The Modi government is making efforts to boost homegrown defence manufacturing to cut reliance on imports by the world’s largest buyer of arms. From fighter aircraft to submarines, India is looking to replace the existing stock of defence equipment. The government recently awarded a Rs 4,500-crore contract for artillery guns to Larsen and Toubro Ltd. and last year cleared the purchase of 36 Rafale multi-role fighters from France's Dassault Aviation for more than $8.5 billion.

Talking Points

India’s biggest tax reform in history is also set to make its small-to-medium businesses more transparent. On July 1, as India rolls out its landmark national sales tax, businesses that make less than 100 million rupees -- which the government refers to as micro, small and medium enterprises -- will all have to digitize. The firms, often accused of conducting business mostly in cash and evading taxes by under-reporting income, will for the first time have to report every transaction, creating an online trail for the tax office.

Industrialist Naveen Jindal and others were summoned by a special court as accused on Tuesday, in a case related to the allocation of a coal block in Madhya Pradesh after it took cognizance of a CBI charge sheet. Besides Jindal, the others summoned as accused are the company, Jindal Steel and Power Ltd (JSPL), its former Director Sushil Maroo, former Deputy Managing Director Anand Goyal and Chief Executive Officer

Vikrant Gujral for alleged cheating and criminal conspiracy in the allocation of Urtan North coal block in Madhya Pradesh.
