The child in all of us can only marvel at the extra days and weeks of Christmas excitement Moose Jaw offers.

While the rest of the world has to wait until December, Christmas starts early in the Friendly City. Starting in October, with its now-famous Christmas in October (see related article, page 3). Moose Jaw residents and visitors alike can enjoy the sights, sounds, tastes and, yes, even sales of the holiday season for more than two months.

Santa comes early to Moose Jaw with Christmas in October, when a wide range of events and activities are held throughout the city. While many take place at various recreational and entertainment facilities, along with outdoor fun in the Wakamow Valley, the spirit of Christmas lives in the downtown. With its historic Norman Rockwell-style heritage properties, many of them wrapped in Christmas trimmings, the downtown is a strong draw.

Started back in 1990 by renowned artist Yvette Moore, Christmas in Oct. has become an annual rite of autumn in this historic city of 34,000. “I think the reason we’ve been so successful is because of what we have offer in terms of the history and the character — we’ve created an ambience that’s second to none,” Moore said.

That spirit carries on until into the new year, with the First Night Celebrations at the Kinsmen Sportsplex capping this year’s events. From October 20, when Christmas in October gets started this year, until early in the New Year, with the extended offerings at many of the City’s facilities, there’s a lot

of time to fill. And, Moose Jaw’s downtown doesn’t disappoint, with its array of shops, restaurants, accommodations, spas and entertainment.

Various participating stores will be all ready for the holiday season beginning Oct. 20, with extended hours and incentives unique to each store. You don’t even have to worry about parking — the City offers free parking downtown on all weekends. However, there is a buzz in the downtown core that definitely will want you planning to come early. The city’s new Multiplex, home of the Warriors and now officially named “Mosaic Place,” is an exciting new addition to downtown that gives even more reason to park, stay, play and shop in the heart of the city. Watch for participating stores that will be offering Game Day incentives and extra hours to accommodate guests visiting Mosaic Place.

Much to the joy of Moose Jaw shopping fans, some of Moose Jaw’s finest are collaborating to offer a very special new weekend of shopping activity. From Nov. 11 to 13, the city is getting ‘All Decked Out.’

“We decided to create an elegant weekend of Christmas activities that would again pull visitors and our own shoppers to downtown and showcase all the reason of why they truly can do all of their shopping with our many unique and exclusive offerings. Together with Jillian’s Designs, Cranberry Rose Boutique, Ellen’s Flowers and Past

Times Photography, we will be hosting holiday home tours featuring each of the stores, VIP shopping events and savings, and a holiday fashion show and brunch,” said Chantelle Moore of Yvette Moore Gallery. Tickets will be very limited and available at participating stores for $50 each, with proceeds donated to Hunger in Moose Jaw.

You will want to mark your calendar and not miss out, as Moose Jaw is the place to shop and be on the scene for the best gifts this season. From clothes to fine art, baby to corporate gifting, Moose Jaw has it all.

Shop village-style in all of the shops this Christmas — where no two stores are alike. Not only will your friends and family love the gifts, you will love shopping for them even more!

Everything’s waiting for you

Christmas comes early in Moose Jaw, where Santa’s sleigh bells ring out in October, inviting visitors to get a jump on the season.

During Moose Jaw’s Christmas in October, hundreds of visitors join local residents, all anxious to explore the city’s many unique shops. They are seeking the perfect gift, want to catch the first glimpse of the latest in holiday decorating, or are shopping for a stylish new outfit for upcoming Christmas parties and get-togethers.

“It’s a very exciting and busy time of year for us,” said Liz Craigen, owner of Cranberry Rose Boutique, one of the approximately 60 businesses taking part. “It’s the perfect time to shop. It helps people get in the Christmas spirit. Even if people aren’t buying, they are getting really good ideas about what they want to do for Christmas.”

Christmas in October is held each year on the third weekend of October — this year’s event will be held Oct. 20 to 23. During the two-day event, each store’s lavish decorations provide a feast for shoppers’ eyes, while the other senses are treated to the sounds, tastes

and aromas of the holiday season. In addition to stunning visual displays and holiday music, many businesses offer their customers festive beverages, samples and treats to enjoy while they shop. Many participating stores extend their hours, opening evenings on Thursday and Friday, or add a shopping day Sunday. Some offer specials with a different sale each day of the four-day event, and some offer in-store draws and give-aways. “Each store does their own unique thing,” said Craigen.

Preparations for the event begin weeks in advance. “We add Christmas into all our displays throughout the whole store. Right after Thanksgiving, our staff begins decorating for the holiday season. They are all very excited about the event,” Craigen said. Shoppers also plan for the special weekend well in advance and like it so much that many out-of-town visitors often ask when the following year’s event will take place so that they can make arrangements to return.

Yvette Moore, artist and owner of the Yvette Moore Gallery, started Christmas in October in her home 20 years ago. She invited other

artists and artisans to showcase their works and capture the attention of pre-season buyers. The event has grown continually, and now, throngs of customers and visitors drop in to the city’s downtown to enjoy this first taste of Christmas.

“We welcome and congratulate all the businesses that are taking part,” said Craigen. “They are very excited about doing it. Those of us that have been around for over 15 years — we still get excited about it.”

Even many service-oriented b u s i n e s s e s , like spas and restaurants, join in the festivities with Christmas displays and promotions. The City of Moose Jaw contributes to the festive atmosphere by switching on the

Christmas lights on Main Street when the event begins, at approximately 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 19, this year.

If you can’t make it to Moose Jaw in time for Christmas in October, don’t worry. Except for a pause in respect for Remembrance Day, the beautiful displays and great shopping will be around until Dec. 25. “Christmas in October is just the beginning,” said Craigen.

There is no need to dread the upcoming winter months and cold temperatures when there’s so much fun to be had in Wakamow Valley. Moose Javians and visitors are lucky to have access to a whole list of things to do, many available only in a winter wonderland located in the beautiful valley.

The fun starts in early November with the 19th annual Wakamow Christmas Craft and Bake Sale held at the Sportsman Centre Nov. 5. The event features a variety of different vendors from communities across Saskatchewan, and there will also be chili and homemade Christmas goodies for sale. Admission is $2 with doors opening at 10 a.m.

The fun doesn’t stop there. On Nov. 10, Wakamow Valley presents the Festival of Flavours, proudly sponsored by the Heritage Inn Hotel and Convention Centre. There will be local and regional cuisine, as well as the latest in alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages available to sample. Tickets, which include five sample coupons, are $25 and can be purchased at Wakamow Valley and Heritage Inn. Additional coupons can be purchased for $1 per coupon. All proceeds will go directly to the Wakamow Valley Authority Development Fund. This is a great idea for the annual Christmas staff party. Make sure to get your tickets early to guarantee a night of fun!

Sleigh bells will be ringing through the Wakamow valley on Dec. 23 from noon to 3 p.m. Perfect for all ages, Wakamow Valley will have horse-drawn wagon tours through the valley’s winter splendor. There is no charge for the rides, but donations will be gratefully accepted, with all proceeds going towards improvements in Wakamow Valley. There will be hot chocolate on sale to help you keep warm and have some old-fashioned, family fun. Just bundle up and come on down!

If you are feeling creative and just want to get outdoors to break free from that Saskatchewan cabin fever, Wakamow Valley offers many opportunities for winter activities, including skating on the oval, cross country skiing, snow shoeing and tobogganing. Or, release your

inner child and join your family in building a snowman, making snow angels or even an old-fashioned snowball fight. Wakamow Valley offers picture-perfect memories year round, but winter in the Valley offers the delights of frost and icicles sparkling on the trees and the sun glinting over the snow-covered ground — the perfect park summer or winter.

Come February, everyone will be ready to shake off the winter blues with Wakamow Valley’s second annual Blues Night. The music-filled event will be held Feb. 24 at the Sportsman Centre. Stay tuned to find out who the exciting performers will be. To make the weekend complete for adults and children, Wakamow will also hold its annual Winterfest on Feb. 25 at the oval. This is a free event, is open to all ages, and will include activities such as horse-drawn wagon rides, winter games, skating on the oval and/or Moose Jaw River, kick sleds, snow painting, ice carving, and much more!

With all the events happening over the winter season, we hope to see you and your family in the valley. For more information, please contact 306-692-2717 or [email protected], or check out our website www.wakamow.ca. Wakamow Valley management and staff wish to thank all the volunteers who help make the events happen.

This Christmas, the Royal Can-adian Air Force Band is making its second trip to Moose Jaw in as many years. The band will be performing a Christmas concert starting at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 7 at Moose Jaw’s iconic Mae Wilson Theatre.

The Royal Canadian Air Force Band is a venerable institution that has been around, in one form or another, for over 65 years. The band itself is an air force unit dedicated to performing music in Canada and across the world. These professional musicians are always sure to put on a great show.

The group numbers around 30 musicians and singers who are equally split between French and English performers. At their show, you can expect to hear a strong mix of classic and contemporary music that is suitable for all ages. Last year’s concert was great, but this year’s promises to be even better.

To help sweeten the deal, the

concert is being held in the name of a good cause. Proceeds from the concert will go to support the 431 Air Cadet Squadron. The air cadets will even have a hand in organizing and promoting the concert.

Tickets are available for just $10, making this Christmas concert an easily affordable event for the whole family. If you will be in the Moose

Jaw area in early December, be sure to check this concert out.

Though this marks the Royal Canadian Air Force Band’s second

visit to Moose Jaw in two years, there is no guarantee that you will

wi l l be able to see them again soon. So, come

this December, bring the whole family and see this

Canadian institution perform all your Christmas favourites.

For a third Christmas season, Tourism Moose Jaw will adorn its property with thousands of Christmas lights. Last year, 15 trees on the property at the corner of Thatcher Drive East and Highway No. 1 were dressed with over 5,500 lights. This year, the organization plans to add another 1,500 lights.

Execut ive director Candis Kirkpatrick said, “Response from the community has been so gratifying that we simply have to continue.” Any why not? The beautiful Visitor Centre, with Mac the Moose and the Snowbird tutor jet, are often the first face of Moose Jaw that many visitors see. Tim Horton’s devotees make the trek across the road daily. For them, and others who just come to bask in the Christmas spirit, the tourism centre will continue to sparkle. Kirkpatrick would like to eventually see all 42 trees on the property alight.

In past years, members of Tourism Moose Jaw have sponsored individual trees. This year, however, everyone will be given the opportunity to take part in the initiative. For a donation of $50, donors’ names will be displayed in the Visitor Centre. For $100, names will be placed in the Visitor Centre

and on the tourism website (www.tourismmoosejaw.ca), and donors of $150 will also see their names in print in the local newspaper. “Every dollar helps,” said Kirkpatrick, who explained that they have had to add electrical panels just to accommodate the lights. As well, Tourism Moose Jaw purchases all the lights and electrical cords required.

Anyone wishing to donate is asked to contact Tourism Moose Jaw at 306-692-0555, email [email protected] or drop off a donation at the Tourism Centre, 450 Diefenbaker Drive.

Lights will be ready to shine for the kick-off of Christmas in October, Oct. 20 to 23, then turned off until after Remembrance Day. They can then be enjoyed until the end of January.

1½ cups seedless raisins¾ cup brown sugar¾ cup corn syrup2 eggs, slightly beatendash nutmeg, cinnamon or allspice

Pour boiling water over raisins and let stand for 10 minutes. Drain and dry. Set aside. Combine butter, sugar, corn syrup and salt. Mix well. Stir in eggs, vanilla, vinegar and spice. Do not use electric mixer or hand beater as beating makes the mixture too frothy, causing lling to boil over pastry during baking. Place frozen tart shells on cookie sheet. Sprinkle 1 to 2 tsp. raisins in the bottom of each shell. Fill shells 2/3 full. Bake in a 400°F oven for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 350°F and bake 5 to 10 minutes longer, or until pastry is golden.

The Christmas tradition of giving continues as the Moose Jaw Health Foundation’s Festival of Trees gets under way on Saturday, Nov. 19, at the Heritage Inn. This year is extra special, as the Moose Jaw Health Foundation celebrates its 25th Anniversary. This year’s theme, ‘The Crystal Ball,’ will transform the Heritage Inn into an amazing culinary and entertainment journey that festival guests won’t soon forget. Dr. Volker Rininsland will once again be the Master of Ceremonies for this year’s event.

Festival of Trees gets bigger and better every year, raising funds for the Moose Jaw Union Hospital. With the announcement of the new hospital in Moose Jaw, this year is especially important, since this new equipment will be used in the hospital of today and in the future hospital. This year’s proceeds will be directed towards the purchase of new-state-of-the-art electrosurgical units for the Moose Jaw Union Hospital to help cancer and surgical patients.

Electrocautery is a surgical technique that involves introducing a high frequency current to a specific area of the body in order to remove unwanted tissue such as cancer, seal off blood vessels or to create a surgical incision. Electrocautery is cleaner, safer and more efficient than other methods. The surgical cautorization allows the surgeon to both remove and seal surgeries with minimal bleeding to the patient. These amazing surgical tools will help surgical teams at the Moose Jaw Union Hospital usher in a new age of surgical care. For the patient, there is a significant reduction in the length of recovery time, reduced chance of post-operative infection and less pain.

Moose Jaw Health Foundation chairman David Reidy said, “We are hoping that funds from festival will help the foundation bring this wonderful technology to our hospital. Given that one in four [Moose Jaw and area] people make use of the Moose Jaw Union Hospital each year, and the hospital performs over 6,400 surgical

procedures annually, this is clearly important for the long-term health of the community. Now with the announcement of the new hospital, festival supporters will impact both the existing Moose Jaw Union Hospital and the new hospital that will be constructed, since this medical equipment can be easily transferred to the new facility.”

The crystal-themed evening includes a spectacular meal, fantastic music and so much more. The highlight is always the gala’s auction of uniquely decorated trees, other Christmas items and cash auction. Items donated to the auction so far include: the Gold Metal Olympic Jersey signed by every member of Team Canada, spectacular crystal-themed jewelry, a UFC Welterweight World Champion George St. Pierre special autographed item, and beautiful hand-crafted quilts. Festival of Trees has raised over $2,000,000 over the last 19 years for the Moose Jaw Union Hospital.

The festival’s volunteer committee is once again led by the talented Laurie Kosior and has been hard at work for months in preparation of this amazing event. When guests enter the

Heritage Inn, their breaths will be taken away by a crystal wonderland.

“Over a hundred volunteers make this event have a special place in the heart of the community,” said Kelly McElree, executive director of the Moose Jaw Health Foundation. “The community rallies behind festival because everyone recognizes the importance of quality healthcare and the impact the Union Hospital has in their life. Festival provides many businesses and individuals a unique way to show their support of our hospital each year. The foundation cannot say thank you enough for their support over the years. These outstanding businesses, organizations and individuals are true leaders in the community.”

Tickets are available at the Moose Jaw Health Foundation Office in Moose Jaw by calling Sherryn Boszak at 306-694-0373. The price is $125 per person. Please reserve your tickets early — this event sells out each and every year. Tickets for the Festival Brunch the following day are available. The price is $20 for adults and $8 for children.

If your holiday halls are decked with stacks of paper bags, mounds of crumpled wrapping paper, an array of random ribbons and a gaggle of gift tags that are destined for the local landfill, it’s time to add a little “green” to

your gift-wrapping regimen.Given that the average household’s waste

jumps by more than 25 per cent between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, and that holiday debris adds an additional one million

tons per week to landfills, there is a lot that everyone can do to recycle, reuse and reduce during the holidays.

Here are some ways to go green and even save green on gift packaging this year:

RecycleC o n v e n t i o n a l

w r a p p i n g p a p e r typically cannot be recycled since it is often coated in metal foil or is plastic laminated. But if the paper rips and doesn’t glitter or shine, it can — and should — be placed in the recycle bin along with other paper products. Check with your local recycling provider to find out which types of wrapping paper they accept. The good news is that recyclable wrapping paper is increasingly available.

ReuseBefore the opening of the gifts begins,

set aside a box for collecting reusable boxes, wrapping paper, gift bags, bows, ribbons and other decorative items. Even if wrapping paper is torn, it can be used for craft projects, packaging filler or to enclose smaller gifts the following year. Gift bags are also great candidates for reuse. If the surface of the bag is marred from removing ribbon or a bow, the spot can be covered with other decorative items or scraps of used wrapping paper.

ReduceRecycling and reusing boxes, wrapping

paper, ribbon and gift bags is a big step in the right direction. But the best way to avoid waste is to reduce the use of these items in the first place. Rather than wrapping gifts in paper, consider using scarves, old tea towels, cloth napkins, or leftover fabric. If you’re crafty, consider creating your own simple fabric bags that can be easily sewn by hand or machine. If you’re not, try painting an old pillowcase and tying it up with fabric ribbon, string or even shoelaces. And don’t forget newspaper! The comics make colorful giftwrap any time of year, particularly for kids.

It’s a wrap — green alternatives for gift packaging

The Whistlestop craft sale could be the only stop you will need to make to satisfy everyone on your Christmas list. Offering everything from jewelry to children’s items, Whistlestop helps you to fast-track your Christmas shopping and avoid last-minute stress.

Whistlestop is Moose Jaw’s largest Christmas craft sale, showcasing the work of 70 crafters and artists from Alberta to Manitoba, including some of Saskatchewan’s very best crafters.

The crafters come together at the Moose Jaw Exhibition Convention Centre on Nov. 4 and 5. You can expect to discover special handmade crafts, art and food items that offer plenty of unique Christmas gift ideas.

Lost Treasures returns this year, with unique Halloween and Christmas décor. David Matthews of A to Z Illusions will be displaying his unique ‘lettergraphs’ — definitely a must-see! He photographs natural occurrences of letters of the alphabet and puts them together to spell words.

Whistlestop welcomes many new exhibitors again this year. Saskatoon-born Darci Newton creates useful items out of objects that once served a different purpose. Using the moniker Uptown Vintage to describe the work she does, her work ranges from creating earrings and bobby pins from buttons, to jewelry hangers from picture frames and coasters from floor tiles.

Ali Thompson is a freelance writer who owns and operates a photography business, AliLauren Creative Services. She ‘up-cycles’ old frames with paint and frames her prints in them, matted with old dictionary pages. She also makes Polaroid (yes real Polaroid!) photo greeting cards and pendants/necklaces with photography set in resin charms.

Linda and Joyce, retired Regina teachers, offer Super Kids Personalized children’s music CDs that are intended to uplift young children and enhance their self-esteem. Their 21 different CDs range from soothing lullabies for newborns, to upbeat pop songs for youths aged six to 10. They also handcraft gift boxes for their CDs and uniquely decorate them for occasions such as baby showers, birthdays, Christmas and ‘just because.’

Mesh Mash Concepts and Designs, founded in Moose Jaw earlier this year, designs and manufactures mesh shower bags called the Twist N’ Shower. A mesh shower bag for organizing shower products such as shampoo, body wash and shaving cream, it comes in a variety of sizes, colours and features. It has a flexible handle that allows easy adjustment to fit any number of surfaces and has a variety of uses, such

as camping, sports, hunting and organizing household bathrooms.

If you’re looking for unique, handcrafted jewelry, Whistlestop crafters have you covered. Moose Jaw’s Carelebeads returns with her handmade glass beads — a key element in her beautiful jewelry collection. Other jewelry designers attending are Bailey Kasko, Scribbles Brass Victorian Jewellery, Five Doors from Caronport, Two Chicks Beading and Designs by Debbie. Zephoria Jewelery will be showcasing silver and copper jewelry containing semi-precious stones. Lil J’s Jewels is another Moose Jaw jewelry designer that will showcase at Whistlestop for the first time.

Whistlestop has some wonderful wood crafters this year, including the scroll work of Harvey Parkinson. Willie Fedorus and Y Knot Wood have everything from vegetable bins and mailboxes to quilt racks and oak stools. Moose Jaw’s own Gerald Ford creates wood-carved toys, trinkets and Christmas decorations, and Ray Mann and Bonnie Bartel create driftwood art.

There’s a wide variety of food booths this year, including Over the Hill Orchard’s delicious Prairie Cherries products including chocolates and pies; Eva’s Lentil and Barley Soup; Angela’s Own Homestyle Originals dip mixes; preserves by Nata Kline; and Kristen’s Homemade Preserves. Adding to the delicious mix this year is Donna’s Meats, with homemade sausage and perogies, and cabbage rolls by Mary’s Custom Baking from Manitoba. The Picnic Basket serves up soup and drink mixes. Travelin’ Java will fill you with delicious custom-made coffee and specialty drinks, and there is chocolate galore at Shirley Howell’s booth. Whistlestop is pleased to welcome In Good Taste, bakers of delicious squares, perfect for Christmas entertaining. You can also buy Christmas baking at the loaded tables at Baker’s Cup. Kettle corn, fudge, peanut brittle and perogies will be available at Sharon’s Kettle Corn and More, and delicious varieties of hot chocolate and ciders will be for sale at The Spice Cabinet.

English Garden Floral Art specializes in hand-painted porcelain and glass. The company offers four unique dinnerware collections, from which you can order anything from a single piece to a full set of dinnerware, complete with candle holders, vases and matching wine glasses. Or, you can work with an artist to design your own dinnerware, including glassware for you wedding or celebration.

Those looking for a little relaxation will want to stop and see Janet Kerr’s Kreations — an eye-appealing display of various soaps, lotions and

bath products. Aromatherapy products can be found at the Heavenly Scents Aromatherapy and Kommon Scents Wax Chips booths. Lynne Erickson from Regina makes her own natural- product soaps, which have become a favourite of many customers. Soap and body products are offered at Gigi’s Handmade Luxury Soap and Serendipity. Flax bags will also be available for easing aches and pains.

There will be a number of booths displaying unique folk art and crafts, including returning favourites, West Family Crafts and Strings ‘n’ Things. Shelley Phillips will be personalizing sweet teddy bear Christmas ornaments, so bring your list of names for one-of-a-kind items. Material Girlz from Medicine Hat have beautiful handmade lamp shades, plus cute children’s purses and coin wallets. The Missing Link has a charm for every occasion and place. Marlene Daley’s booth will feature a decorated Christmas tree displaying her handmade ornaments.

Handcrafts Unlimited has children’s designer sweaters and hats, and Eliza Carpentier and Hannah Rannie make bows and flowers for infants and little girls as well as knit hats and soothers. Tutu-Loo Tutus will delight little girls with her tutus, wands and hair accessories.

Sewing products are available through C & E Crafts, and Marg Smith offers a wide variety of products from mitts, hats and baby seat covers to tableware.

Pottery from Dragonfly Clay & Crafts displays a unique and interesting style. Included are unusual globes filled with prairie delights like leaves, flowers and feathers. A must-see.

The craft sale wouldn’t be complete without the amazing talents of artists like Bernadette Lusney from Penguin Chaos and the embroidery wonders from Yuhu Creations of Calgary. Delores Art from Manitoba has wall plaques with thoughtful or humorous sayings along with Country Rustic Angel Décor. Also attending this year are E.C. Recycling, with rubber door mats and horse swings that are tough enough to handle kids and adults, pet supplies from Pupcake Bakery, including pet treats, dog sweaters, bandanas, pet toys and much more.

Amazing stained glass works will also be on display and available to purchase at M & M Glass with Class. Some of Saskatchewan’s finest honey and honey and wax products can be found at Whistlestop, as well. Pure Honey has one of the best lip balms made.

Whistlestop will open Friday, Nov. 4, from 2 to 9 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 5, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $4. For more information, contact Whistlestop Craft Sale at 306-693-8687.

More than Pots at the Church beside the HighwayBy Wendy LivingstoneL-P Specialty Products

For several decades, the little whitechurch with the word‘POTTERY’displayedon the roof has been a landmark alongsidethe Number One Highway near theoutskirts of Moose Jaw. The word atopthe building does not, however, begin todescribe the art objects that are to be foundwithin the Parsons Dietrich Pottery Studio.

Inside the quaint building, the creativeminds and hands of the husband and wifeteam, Wendy Parsons and Zach Dietrich, fashion clay and ceramic pieces that aredistinctive and beautiful. Dietrich works atthe wheel, creating items such as pots andjars. His functional pieces become works ofart as he adds texture, decorates and carvesthem, and formulates the perfect slipsand glazes. Parsons designs a variety ofunique, often whimsical decorative items, including figures and roundels, which arecircular tile wall pieces, some featuringrural scenes. To produce very special items, the couple collaborates, each employingtheir own talents and strengths to createthe ultimate design. At this studio, teapotsare not just teapots and jars are not just jars— they impart personality as they take on

the form of living things such as loveablemonsters.

Parsons’ and Dietrich’s creative touchand attention to detail is n o tlimited to the shape andform of the pieces theycreate — to achieve thevery specific results theydesire, they use three differentkilns. The basic electric kiln, which is used for the initialbisque firing to harden the clayso that it doesn’t break whenbeing handled, is preferred byParsons for the final firing of herroundels, since it allows her to producea wide variety of bright, vibrant colours.Stoneware and porcelain clays need to befired at the high temperature that only agas kiln can produce. For a one-of-a-kind,earthy effect, a wood-fired kiln is used. Asthe wood burns, ash lands on the pieces andadds a unique element to the final finish.“It gives a real special effect that you can’treally control that well,” said Dietrich, “it’slike the kiln does some of the work for you.You get really special pieces that you can’tget with any other method.”Working withthis kiln is, however, very labour intensive. It must be stoked with armfuls of woodabout every five minutes for 12 hours.

The impassioned work of Parsons andDietrich has not gone unnoticed. It is valuedboth within and outside the province.

Many of the tourists who once venture

off the highway to view and purchasepieces make it a point to return to the

studio each time they travel insouthern Saskatchewan. Dietrich said

that visitors appreciate theopportunity to connectwith the artist whomade piece they arepurchasing. “Peoplewho come into our

studio say it is reallynice to come and actually

see how the process worksand see us working. If you

are buying something in a store, you never get to meet the person

who made it,” said Dietrich. “I think thatpersonal connection is really a drawingcard.” The artists, in turn, appreciate theopportunity to enlighten othersabout their craft. “We reallyencourage people to visit ourstudio, have a tour, andreally get to know us asartists — it’s all part ofeducating the public aboutour craft.”

The education processincludes conductingworkshops for fellow pottersand encouraging the nextgeneration of artists totry their hands at workingin clay. Parsons and Dietrich v i s i tsouth Saskatchewan schools, sharing their

joy of pottery with area students, andguiding them through various projects.“We’ve done a few different projects withschools and they are really fun — kids’art is so great, and kids love clay. It’s soexpressive — you can draw on it; you cantexture it; you can sculpt on it.”

Within the province’s art world, thecouple is highly respected as evidencedby the recognition their work has received.Their pieces have been extensivelydisplayed in local art galleries and havegarnered numerous project grants fromthe Saskatchewan Arts Board.

Parsons and Dietrich are celebratingtheir 31st anniversary at the Moose Jawlocation, but they have not yet exhaustedtheir creativity.“We are always trying new

things. Our work changes fromyear to year and is hopefully

getting better. I thinkpart of the reason weare still around isbecause we are still

excited about clay andthe possibilities, andI think our customerssee that too,” saidDietrich. “That’s whatkeeps working with clayexciting for us. Clay islimitless — you can

experiment forever andnever do everything.”

With myriad activities and events, Moose Jaw offers more fun than a barrel-full of elves for the winter, and especially over the Christmas holiday season.

Barb Fysh, recreation services manager for the city, said there are all kinds of activities for Moose Jaw residents and visitors to enjoy over the winter, and especially during the Christmas season. “We have all the facilities open at extended hours over the holiday season. This is especially nice for all the children who are out of school over the holidays,” she said, advising anyone interested to check out the hours and prices online at moosejaw.ca/cityhall/parks/facilities/index.shtml.

As if all the events and activities taking place indoors and out at Moose Jaw’s numerous rinks and other facilities weren’t enough, the Friendly City really gets going on New year’s Eve. Standing on the cusp of a new year is always exciting, as we reflect on the year that has just passed and open the door to a new year full of possibility. And, doing so with one’s family makes the excitement of New Year’s Eve even more special.

Most bars and restaurants offer special events to mark the celebration, but nothing can compare to the fun of ringing in a new year with family and friends at the Moose Jaw Kinsmen Sportsplex during its First Night activities. Family is what it’s all about, with door prizes and a host of activities. Not only will the rink be open for skating and the pool for swimming and water games, but there will also be Wii video, table games, billiards, air hockey and a DJ providing music, along with numerous other things to see and do.

“We want to provide a fun, family atmosphere,” said Shelly Howe, the recreation program supervisor for the Sportplex. “The concession stand will also be open for food and [non-alcoholic] beverages. The traditional midnight countdown will feature a huge dropping balloon as everyone dons their New Year’s Eve hats and fires up their noisemakers.”

And, not only residents of Moose Jaw are welcome to enjoy all the delights of the city, both throughout the year and especially over the holidays, but so, too, are people from the surrounding area. Fysh points out that families from Regina have also participated in the First Night event in past years, and she invites everyone to join in for this year’s 16th

annual event. “It’s a whole lot of fun, and good for the whole family,” she said.

First Night will be held on Dec. 31 from 7 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Tickets go on sale at the Sportsplex on Dec. 1; $25 for a family of four, and $5 for each additional family member. That price goes up to $30 on Dec. 30. More information is available at moosejaw.ca/cityhall/parks/recprogs/pdf/first_night_2010.pdf.

Bulk & Natural FoodsBulk & Natural Foods

Vitamins, Bulk Foods, Healthy Foods and More! This may be your first time learning about Nutter’s so we’d like to share a shorthistory of our company (that we’re very proud of) with you. Nutter’s was createdfrom a vision of merchandising bulk and speciality foods in a clean, friendly, and customer service-oriented retail setting. Over the past 29 years, Nutter’s hasevolved into a truly unique food retailer combining a commitment to the pursuitof a healthy lifestyle with exciting in-store merchandising. From humble beginnings in 1982, in a small 900 square foot location in MedicineHat, Alberta, Nutter’s Bulk and Natural Foods has grown to over 28 locations, from Manitoba to British Columbia and one store in the United States.

In 1982, Dr. Jim Cranston and a local partner sawa need in Western Canada for a new concept infood shopping. After the first year of business,it was apparent that consumers were ready toadopt the idea of shopping in bulk and the newvariety of products it offered. In 1983, the partnershad made the decision to move their small bulkfood store into a 5,000 square foot, high profile, location in Medicine Hat, Alberta. The rest, asthey say, is history. With the new visibility andinflux of customers came the requests for franchiseinformation.

In 1984, Nutter’s Bulk and Natural Foodsofficially began franchising and after two years ofbusiness, had opened 11 outlets in Alberta and Saskatchewan. With growth, came the need to make administrative changes and Dr. Cranston and his partnerrecognized the need for strong, full-time leadership of the company.

In 1994, Dr. Cranston’s nephew, Donald Cranston, purchased the shares of Dr.Cranston’s original partner and began what has been a 29 year evolution of theNutter’s operating system.

Through the leadership of Donald Cranston, and Lynn Cranston (daughter of Dr.Jim Cranston) with input from a very experienced head office support staff andfranchisees from diverse backgrounds, the Nutter’s Bulk & Natural Foodsconcept has seen incredible change from the original concept. The evolution of

the business has taken us from a traditional bulk food store,to full service delis, seasonal gift tray programs and now, healthand natural food centres.

The changes in our stores have been the result of reacting toour customers’ need and our ability to recognize that in order tosurvive in today’s marketplace, you must stay one step aheadof consumers’ needs.

Some of the staples you found years ago are still there. Qualitybulk foods, the basic ingredients of “home baking and cooking”that families enjoy daily. But, you’ll find natural and organicproducts are a big part of every Nutter’s store today, alongwith vitamins, supplements and other healthy lifestyleproducts, including gluten free products. In addition, Nutter’s

has developed ongoing training programs with a view to offer ‘productknowledgeable’ staff that can assist customers in making the desicions best suitedto their lifestyle.

With so many people looking for alternatives to costly holiday fare, newspapers, magazines and online cooking sites are overflowing with great ideas. But the key to hosting a successful seasonal meal is not simply finding interesting recipes and purchasing lower-cost foods, but in creating and organizing a menu that works from start to finish. The easiest way to do that? Make a plan and stick to it.Share the cooking and the cost

Rising food costs and tighter budgets have prompted many people to host potluck holiday dinners. As the host, you might prepare the main dish and have your guests fill in the rest of the menu. Either ask participants to contribute their signature salad, side dish or dessert, or plan a meal along a particular theme and give guests choices from among a list of menu items.Simplify

There is no rule stating that holiday dinners have to be fancy, so don’t be afraid to plan a menu that has fewer and less costly components. For example, serve a hearty and flavourful turkey stew or soup in place of a more expensive roasted turkey. Pair it with a simple salad and loaves of crusty bread, and then finish up with homemade apple cobbler. Your guests will leave happy and well nourished, and you will have served up a flavorful and frugal holiday feast.Cook and freeze

Another option is to build your menu around a few dishes that can be prepared ahead and frozen. Cooking ahead saves money by spreading out food expenditures and avoiding last-minute shopping, which often leads to spending more money.Go meatless

Vegetarian dishes can be far less expensive, especially when feeding a crowd. Consider replacing the turkey or roast with a pasta or risotto dish, roasted vegetable tart or veggie lasagna. Great sources of vegetarian recipes include vegkitchen.com, epicurious.com, vegetariantimes.com and allrecipes.com.Go ethnic

While tradition tends to rule at Thanksgiving,

Christmas and New Year’s menus are wide open. How about a Mexican fiesta or an Italian feast? With a large pan of enchiladas or a big bowl of spaghetti and meatballs, it’s easy to feed a crowd and stay on budget.Stick to homemade

As a rule, anything you make at home will cost less — and likely taste better — than prepared foods from the grocery store or a restaurant. If you stick with simple recipes that don’t require an array of exotic ingredients, your homemade holiday meal will hit the spot and you won’t hit the ceiling when you add up the food bill.

Budget-friendly holiday meals

Early indications are that Santa Claus will parade down the streets of Moose Jaw sometime in late November. The Kinsmen Club have been in touch with him and now they just need to pick a date when he can leave the North Pole and make the trip South. Once he checks with Mrs. Claus and the elves, he’ll let them know and they will post all of the information on the Tourism Moose Jaw website, www.tourismmoosejaw.ca. Watch for details.

History was written when a group of 14 artists put together plans for the first annual Moostletoe Studio Tour. On Saturday, Oct. 22, artisans will open their studios to the public throughout Moose Jaw. For the event, Muralist and Caricaturist Ward Schell created the happy Moostletoe Logo that will soon be seen all over town.

Start your Moostletoe Studio Tour by picking up a map from the Tourist Info Centre (at the Big Moose on the Highway) or at any of the participating artists. Follow the map to 10 stops to meet the artists and enjoy their creations including pottery, glass, paintings, baskets, sculpture and carvings. Many artists will have a draw to win a piece of art. All stops will offer their unique handmade crafts and you will be able to talk to artists about their work.Participating artists are:• Parsons-Dietrich Pottery• Potter Karen Peterman hosting painter Arlene Mack • Beth Crabb Baskets and Byron Crabbs’ wildlife sculptures• Glassworks by Glenda Loustel• Monicats Pottery Studio hosting glass artist Sue Hunchuk• Claude Morin Stoneware hosting Carver Clayton Cave• Fireworx Glass works by Sabine Arends• Moose Jaw Museum & Art Gallery Gift Shop hosting clay artist Christy Schweiger• Paintings by Jen and Ward Schell
