If possible, your cart should be at street level. Do not set it at the curb earlier than 8 p.m. the night before your collection. Keep your garbage cart five feet away from all obstacles including your recycling bin, your yard trimmings, parked cars, mailboxes, telephone connection boxes, water meters, fences, and walls. If you place your cart under a tree limb or power line, make sure there is 14’ below the line or limb and the ground. The handle of your cart should point towards your house. We recommend bagging all garbage before putting it in your cart. This will help prevent it from blowing away and littering the streets. Your garbage must fit easily in your cart. The lid of your cart must be closed to prevent litter. Remove your garbage cart from the curb by 10 p.m. on your collection day. CHANGE TO THE POOL HOURS & RULES! The board & pool committee decided to make a last-minute change to the pool hours after last month’s newsletter went to print. The current hours are as follows: THE 2010 POOL SEASON SCHEDULE: Mon – 10:30am-8:30pm Tues - CLOSED Wed - 10:30am-8:30pm Thurs - 10:30am-8:30pm Fri - 10:30am-8:30pm Sat - 10:30am-8:30pm Sun - 10:30am-8:30pm The pool will be open until sometime in September, date to be determined. Purple pool tags are required to enter the pool. No exceptions! Call 866-473-2573 or email [email protected] if you need tags. The pool rules can be found on our community website at www.legendoaks2.org. The most recent update to the rules: No ripped, torn or cut shorts or shirts allowed in the water. The reason is that the materials from the cut off areas will clog the intake lines and filtration system, which will result in cloudy water and other sanitation issues. Family Swim Gym (lifeguard contractors) also encourages only white t-shirts to be worn inside the pool. .

Newsletter announcementDear Neighbors,

I am enjoying being the Editor of our newsletter (published by Peel, Inc.), and have been doing so since the beginning of 2008. Thus the end of this year will mark my third full year as Editor. I believe that we have made great strides in our neighborhood communication, through the newsletter and the Yahoo Group, and are reaping the rewards of increased participation, a stronger community, and a pleasant and friendly neighborhood.

I believe it’s important to have other voices representing the neighborhood through the newsletter, and therefore I’ll be retiring as Editor at the end of this year. I’m looking for someone to take over starting with the January, 2011 edition, for which the articles are due to Peel by December 10th, 2009. This may seem like a long way away but I wanted to give ample time for volunteers to register their interest, and be trained in the process, before the holidays. By the time you read this, I’ll be submitting the articles for the August edition, which leaves only 2 more editions before the Thanksgiving one is due.

The newsletter can be edited by a committee or an individual, and isn’t too difficult or time-consuming. As Editor, you don’t have to write any articles yourself if you don’t want to, but you can if you like. If you are interested in finding out what’s involved, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me at [email protected], or 424-22-MAURA (424-226-2872).

I look forward to the newsletter continuing to be an important part of our neighborhood communication, and to the fresh ideas and perspective a new Editor will bring.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Warm regards,

Maura ThomasLegend Oaks 2 Newsletter Editor & Yahoo Group Moderator

FACTS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT DROWNING

For more information, check out our website at

www.colinshope.org

Drowning is the leadingcause of unintentional

injury-related deathin children ages 1-4

Drowning is the 2nd leading cause of unintentional injury-related death ages 1-14.

DROWNING WILL AFFECT YOUOR SOMEONE YOU KNOW

Most children are out of sight or missing for less than 5 minutes and usually in the presence of 1 or both parents.

NO ONE is “drown proof” – no matter their level of swimming ability.

Falls, entrapments, and injuries lead to drowning regardless of swimming level.

A majority of people overestimate their own and their child’s ability to swim, especially in a panic event.

5min

Drowning occurs in as little as 2 minutes.

Most children die who are submerged for as little as 6-10 minutes.

Irreversible brain damage occurs in as little as 4 minutes.

2min 4min 6min

Children who drown do not scream, splash, or struggle. They silently slip beneath the water, even with adults & lifeguards present.

DROWNING IS QUICK AND SILENT

DROWNING CAN STILL OCCUREVEN IF YOU KNOW HOW TO SWIM

Dump Cable & still Get all the tv You want for fREE (or close to it) By Maura Thomas

Yes, it’s true. I have successfully freed myself from Time Warner Cable and I’m saving almost $100/month, without sacrificing any of my favorite shows. There are actually many ways to do this. I’m going to explain how to do it using a computer as a media server. What you’ll need:

• an extra computer with internet access (I’m using a Mac Mini - $599) and a television capable of receiving a digital signal OR a digital converter box

• a computer with a video input compatible with your TV (for example, my old television only had an S-Video connection, but Mac Mini’s aren’t compatible with S-Video, even with an adapter. I bought a new digital-capable LCD tv with an HDMI connection).

• a tuner for your computer to pick up the digital broadcast from the local tv stations and a way to control your computer from your couch. This could be a wireless keyboard & mouse, or it could be software called Teleport on another laptop in your house, or an app for your iPhone called Mobile Air Mouse (optional: a digital indoor or outdoor antenna & a $9/mo Netflix subscription)

Now it’s true that if you don’t have an extra computer, and you don’t have a digital television, then this solution is not free. However, once you cancel cable, you can probably recoup the money you spend on

the computer & the television in 8-12 months. And the tuner and antenna should cost under $100. My point with the “free” headline is that after I got all the components assembled, I get everything I was paying Time Warner Cable for, without a monthly bill. Digital broadcasts from all the major TV networks are free, just like in the days of rabbit-ears, but the reception is better. So without cable, I get all the major networks: ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, and PBS. And the tuner I bought for my computer (Elgato Hybrid) comes with DVR software, so I can also record any programs on any of these channels directly to my computer and watch them at my convenience, just like with a TiVo or the DVR I was paying for from Time Warner Cable ($6.99/month for the DVR, and $9.99/month for DVR service). Also, all of the major networks stream some or all of their programming on demand, on their website. So if, for example, you missed Grey’s Anatomy and you forgot to record it, you can just open your browser on your tv/computer, go to ABC.com, and watch it there whenever you want.

The last optional piece is a Netflix account for $9/month, which has a huge library of “watch instantly” (i.e. stream to your tv) shows

and movies. Virtually every television show is released on DVD at the end of it’s season, so if you don’t want to watch it on the network’s website, you can wait until the end of the season and then watch the whole season, at your convenience, commercial free, via Netflix, without even waiting for the DVD to come in the mail. This is a great way to discover good shows that aren’t on anymore, especially when all that’s on TV are re-runs. I’ve used Netfix to watch entire seasons of Lost, 24, Prison Break, and others. Many shows are also available immediately on iTunes and Amazon.com for a small fee. So while it may still cost you a little money, you’ll only be paying for what you want, instead of the cable companies “bundled packages” where you pay for hundreds of channels you never watch. Also think how much more productive you might be without 300 channels always calling your attention! So the bottom line is that while it’s true that you might need to invest in some equipment, you can free yourself from your monthly cable bill and recoup your investment in that new equipment pretty quickly. I’ve also canceled phone and internet from Time Warner Cable and switched to Clear (the signal is great here in Legend Oaks) and now instead of paying $183/month to Time Warner Cable, I pay $90/month to Clear plus $9/month to Netflix and I get MORE services than I was getting before, plus exactly the television I want to watch, when I want to watch it. As technology and services change, this solution might need to evolve as well. But for the foreseeable future, I’ve found this a great solution for me. And if I need to change in a year, two years, or three years, I still have that option. You can get more specific instructions on how to dump cable for internet tv at budurl.com/how2webtv.
