Gonzaga is the place of originof the family under whose ruleMantua achieved its greatestsplendour in art and culture inthe fifteenth century. Today itis also known throughout theworld for the production ofmaterials for a famouseducational approach: theMontessori Method. It all began with a meetingbetween Dr. Maria Montessoriand Donna Maria Maraini
Guerrieri Gonzaga, her greatfriend and admirer. DonnaMaraini often entertained Dr.Montessori at her villa inPalidano, a village which isclose to Gonzaga. This led to the first productionof Montessori materialsaccording to specificationsgiven by Maria Montessoriherself to Ernesto Bassoli & Figli, who were office furnituremanufacturers at the time.

Practical Life Activities
The objects that are used for
practical life have no
scientific purpose. They are
the objects used where a child
lives and which he sees
employed in his own home,
but they are especially made
to a size that he can use.
