Our Vocabulary Cards have no text on them whatsoever to avoid the possibility of discouraging the pre-reader. Each vocabulary packet includes 12 cards (32⁄3” x 4 1⁄3”) with photos that clearly isolate their subject plus a control sheet listing the names of all subjects and a sample lesson plan. Matching Cards Use our Matching Cards to teach vocabulary, when playing sound games, for sorting work (e.g., sorting birds from fish), for writing inspiration, and, of course, for identical matching work! Each matching packet includes 12 photo cards (32⁄3” x 4 1⁄3”) with a blue dot on the back and 12 matching photo cards with a red dot on the back (the dots are for sorting). 24 cards per packet plus a control sheet listing the names of all subjects and a lesson plan .

Imagine the Phonetic Object Box with a control! Children read the words on the separate word cards and match them to the picture-only cards. Then, they use the control cards (which include the words and pictures) to check their own work. Each packet includes 6 Photo Cards (32⁄3” x 3”); 6 Word Cards (32⁄3” x 1⅛”); and 6 Control Cards (32⁄3” x 41⁄3”); 18 Cards per packet.

Level 1: Simplest Phonetic Words: Every word in this level is a truly phonetic three-letter word with a short vowel sound—the first words a child reads. Six subjects/18 cards per packet; 5 packets/90 cards in the level.

Level 2: Longer Phonetic Words: Level 2 words are still completely phonetic words with consonant blends like cr, st, and sk. Six subjects/18 cards per packet; 5 packets/90 cards in the level.

Level 3: Phonograms/Digraphs: Aside from the single phonogram in each word (printed in red), the rest of each Level 3 word is completely phonetic. Traditional Phonograms (9 packets). Nine packets that match the green sandpaper

letters: ai (paint), ar (yarn), ch (chip), ee (tree), er (fern), oa (boat), oo (book), or (corn), sh (ship); one packet/phonogram; six subjects/18 cards per packet; 9 packets/162 cards in all.

Other Phonograms (10 packets). Includes 10 packets that isolate common phonograms in our language: a-e (cake), a nasal (can), ck (bucket), ea (leaf), i-e (lime), o-e (cone), oi (coin), oo (moon), ow (owl), double consonants (bell); one packet/phonogram; six subjects/18 cards per packet; 10 packets/180 cards in all.

Level 4: Challenging Phonetic Words: Put everything together in phonetic words that include more than one common phonogram (from Level 3 only). This level begins with one syllable words (sheep, shell) and progresses to two syllable

words (clover, chicken) and finally compound words (starfish, sunflower). Six subjects/18 cards per packet; 5 packets/90 cards in the level.

We use a mix of full-color and black-and-white photography to clearly isolate each part of the whole in its natural color while the rest of the subject recedes into the background in muted shades of gray. Each packet depicts the key external anatomy for that species (e.g., tree, roots, trunk, branches, leaves) and includes Photo Cards (32⁄3” x 3”), Word Cards (32⁄3” x 1⅛”), Control Cards (32⁄3” x 4 1⁄3”), and information on the key features of the class. BotanyBegin your botany studies by noticing and discussing live plants. Then, use the card materials for the Plant Kingdom (facing page), Leaf Shapes (p. 4) and examples of Garden and Wildflowers (p. 4). Finally, present the parts of a plant (in this case a bonsai ficus tree), leaf, and flower as shown here. Dicots are the “typical” flowers seen in textbooks but many children are more familiar with monocots (like lilies). By teaching children the parts of both, we build a foundation for later distinguishing among flower families.
