PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
NEWSLETTER TERM 4 WEEK 7
Every Student Matters! Every Moment Counts!
Throughout the past week I have been in Sydney participating in professional learning for new principals appointed in the past 12
months from all over the State. The key message of the conference was to get to know your school and community well. After you
have a clear understanding of these facets the message was to focus on one thing that you need to do to achieve improved student
outcomes. You need to narrow that focus and concentrate on it for a prolonged period of time. Slowly and softly was the message.
This message resonates perfectly with me as I have a strong belief that we need to focus on the teaching of English, in particular
Reading.
To do this we are implementing the Readers Workshop in 2020. This is a researched, evidence based program that works. As part of
the program I am asking for my teachers to change and I am also asking for the students and families to embrace this change. The
first thing you will notice is that the routines and the norms of the school will be different. We will have an uninterrupted literacy
session from 9.05—11.10am. To do this assembly will be run from 2.30pm on Fridays as of week 1 next year. As an instructional
leader I will be in classrooms every morning so unless there is an emergency I will be unavailable during this time.
We have already started to experiment with this program and have purchased resources to assist with its implementation. Students
do appear to be embracing the change and the older students especially are demonstrating that they like set routines for the
morning. Our staff have been conducting instructional rounds at Cobram Primary School. Our focus during these visits was a
program entitled the Readers Workshop. This program is designed to give both teachers and students a specific focus and goal
whilst reading. Reading stamina is integral to this as well as students being given a time at least once a week to discuss their reading
goals.
As part of the implementation of this program we are going to try as much as possible to designate from 9.05am—10.10am to
uninterrupted learning time.
Lyn Sharratt Professional Learning—Tuesday, November 19
As part of the professional learning suite being rolled out by the Department Ms Campbell, Ms Catlow and I travelled to and from
Albury today. Lyn Sharratt is a renowned educational expert who concentrates her work on what the students are learning in the
classroom. She has 5 key questions that we ask the students whilst they are learning that help us understand how they are going.
As a leader I have used Lyn’s model in schools before and have already started to use her 5 questions in our classrooms.
The questions are:
1. What are you learning
2. How are you going?
3. How do you know?
4. How can you improve?
5. Where can you go for help?
These questions are all directly linked to the learning intentions and success criteria teachers use in their lessons. Ask your child if
they have been interviewed by me. They are demonstrating their understanding with some very well thought out answers which is a
great reflection of their learning progress.

Student Behaviour
It has been noticeable over the past few weeks that the students behaviour in Senior classes especially is becoming very poor.
“The students are tired”, “It is the end of the year/term” and other such excuses are used for this. It is paramount that as a school
we keep on top of poor behaviour.
If students are violent, if they swear or if they harass/intimidate other students it is our duty to protect the other students and our
staff.
Consequently, if students do misbehave they we will be strictly following our school practices and procedures for behaviour
management.
Our school mantra, “Every Student Matters! Every Moment Counts!” will be at the forefront of our mind when making disciplinary
decisions. To do this it may be necessary to suspend students with inappropriate behaviour or violent behaviour to ensure that the
learning environment is safe for the remainder of our students.
Thank You
As I have been away for the past week I would also like to personally thank all of the teachers and support staff in both the
classroom and office for stepping up and ensuring that we have not had too many changes for this period. I would also like to
personally thank Ms Campbell, Ms Catlow and Ms McCartney for their work as executive members during this time.
