About Milton

•  To many, Milton Glaser is the embodiment of American graphic design during the latter half of this century. His presence and impact on the profession internationally is formidable. Immensely creative and articulate, he is a modern renaissance man — one of a rare breed of intellectual designer-illustrators, who brings a depth of understanding and conceptual thinking, combined with a diverse richness of visual language, to his highly inventive and individualistic work.

Born in 1929, Milton Glaser was educated at the High School of Music and Art and the Cooper Union art school in New York and, via a Fulbright Scholarship, the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, Italy. He co-founded the revolutionary Pushpin Studios in 1954, founded New York Magazine with Clay Felker in 1968, established Milton Glaser, Inc. in 1974, and teamed with Walter Bernard in 1983 to form the publication design firm WBMG. Throughout his career, Glaser has been a prolific creator of posters and prints. His artwork has been featured in exhibits worldwide, including one-man shows at both the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His work is in the permanent collections of many museums. Glaser also is a renowned graphic and architectural designer with a body of work ranging from the iconic logo to complete graphic and decorative programs for the restaurants in the World Trade Center in New York. Glaser is an influential figure in both the design and education communities and has contributed essays and granted interviews extensively on design. Among many awards throughout the years, he received the 2004 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, for his profound and meaningful long-term contribution to the contemporary practice of design.

Identity, Advertising, Illustration, Interior Design

•  As you can see from the logos here, overall Milton Glaser Inc creates colorful Identity Solutions for their clients. Their most famous of all is the I love New York logo, the iconic logo is now used all over the world with different closings, and is instantly recognizable to many from its original concept.

The I Love New York logo is the basis of an advertising campaign and has been used since 1975 to promote tourism in New York City, it was later used to promote New York State as well. The trademark logo appears in souvenir shops and brochures throughout the state.

A front page from the Daily News shows Milton Glaser’s reinterpretation of his 1975 poster reflecting the mood of Americans after the devastating terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.

The Identity, Packaging & Advertising created for The Brooklyn Brewery again shows a great logo with an array of colorful options. Amazingly the actual beer comes packaged in what seems to be a champagne bottle, but on further inspection, the history actually reveals that for centuries French & Belgian monks re-fermented beer in this particular bottle to give it complex flavors and naturally high carbonation.

The wine folks eventually cottoned onto the idea and eventually called it Methode Champenoise.

Here we have a great example of identity re-design. The old Minneapolis Institute of Arts logo, which replicated the front facade of the building was stripped down to the six columns, horizontal rows were added to create the initial letters MIA, colour was added and text to complete, this new logo was then emblazoned across the front of the building creating its new identity.

The identity was used throughout to create the new brand that everyone will remember.

Milton Glaser Inc came up with the idea of redrawing Shakespeare for the Theatre for a New Audience in a variety of ways because of the fact there were only two examples to work from which were very similar. The artwork was used in a variety of ways across many applications.

He won an Award Statue for his designs.

Here we have some examples of the art created by Milton Glaser Inc, this was used around the building in various forms, the Oroo Noko Image was used large scale to fill the huge space behind the glass façade at the front of the Theatre for a New Audience building.

A running theme that seems to resonate with Milton Glaser Inc is the fact that they contribute so much to the arts. The identity they created for The Visual Arts Theatre with its colorful theme was used to create a kinetic sculpture on top of the entrance that rotates on the hour. The 50 foot long mural on the outside of the building changes twice a year which shows testament to their ability and commitment.

I really like the poster of The Secret of Art which shows a scrunched up version of the poster inside.

As you can see from the work of The Visual Arts Theatre, Milton Glaser Inc creates structure as well as media, and the two examples from many show no exception to their skills of interior design.

The Rainbow Room and The Aurora Restaurant had every aspect designed, the menu’s, dishes, lighting, rugs, signage, plaster castings, sculptured walls everything you can see was thought about in detail.
