Assistant Professor of Medicine

Vanderbilt University Medical Center Division - Epidemiology

Dr. Lang Kuhs received her M.P.H at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and her Ph.D at the National Cancer Institute. She is a cancer prevention researcher trained in basic la-boratory science and epidemiology. Dr. Lang Kuhs’ research area is oncogenic viruses and vi-rus-associated cancers. Within this area, her main research interests include (1) understanding the epidemiology of oncogenic infections; (2) vaccine development; and (3) identification of novel methods for detection of virus-associated cancers. Prior to her arrival at Vanderbilt, Dr. Lang Kuhs conducted research on hepatitis C virus and human papillomavirus, two viruses re-sponsible for a significant burden of cancers worldwide. During her dissertation, she devel-oped and patented four novel HCV vaccines, which are currently being evaluated in two Phase I clinical trials. As a Cancer Prevention Fellow at the NCI, Dr. Lang Kuhs’ research focused on understanding HPV infections at anatomic sites outside of the cervix. She published the first study to assess the efficacy of the bivalent HPV vaccine against vulvar HPV infections and pub-lished studies describing the epidemiology of non-cervical HPV infections. At Vanderbilt, she will be building on her previous work by examining whether virus-specific antibodies can be
