oriental hotel not worth keeping: heritage victoriaWILLIAMSTOWN

A developer has welcomed Heritage Victoria’s recommendation not to include the former Oriental Hotel on the state heritage register.

Evolve Development plans to demolish Williamstown’s second-oldest building – and possibly the state’s rst three-storey brick hotel (circa 1854) – to build a six-storey, 83-dwelling apartment block.

Managing director Ashley Williams said that Heritage Victoria had made “the correct decision”.

“[It] is supported by years of reports and planning hearings that have all indicated th e building has been in very poor condition for

many years and is not worthy of retention,” he said.

“We hope that both the Hobsons Bay City Council and the various objector groups will now recognise the need for the project to move forward and will work with us to bring some long-overdue urban renewal to the precinct.”

Heritage Victoria found that the hotel, “while unusual for being a hotel of three storeys in Williamstown, is an undistinguished building”.

“It demonstrates the principal characteristics of a gold rush-era corner hotel. However, many of this type were constructed

in Victoria in the 1850s and early 1860s .” Hobsons Bay mayor Sandra Wilson

said the decision marked “a sad day for Williamstown”, but Evolve would need

to satisfy the conditions of a planning permit before any demolition could start. She said the council would make a submission to the Heritage Council requesting that it ignore

Heritage Victoria’s recommendation.“ e council has done everything it

can to save the Oriental ,” Cr Wilson said.“All our legal avenues are nearly exhausted,

but the council will continue to argue the case for the protection of the Oriental via its submission to the Heritage Council.

“Heritage Victoria notes that at least ve hotels constructed in Williamstown [from 1857-63] still exist and the council will ask that it expedites the assessment process to see these buildings included on Victorian Heritage Register.”

e buildings the council wants to protect are the Prince of Wales, Napier Hotel, Alfred Hotel, Telegraph Hotel and Steam Packet Hotel.

Save Williamstown spokesman Godfrey Moase said the residents’ lobby group would encourage people to make submissions to the Heritage Council calling for the preservation of the Oriental. \

pop-up park’s going nowhereYARRAVILLE

Yarraville’s popular pop-up park is expected to become permanent under a proposal that went before Maribyrnong council last night.

e council may close Ballarat Street between Murray and Canterbury streets, laying synthetic turf; introducing seating, planter boxes and large umbrellas; and planting permanent shade trees along the length of the park.

Maribyrnong mayor Grant Miles told the Weekly that community support for the park had been enormous, as shown by survey results and extensive social media campaigns.

“It’s fairly obvious from the Facebook campaign and the lobbying from residents that they wanted it in the community,” Cr Miles said.

He said the $250,000 project was an exciting example of a council initiative being embraced by the community.

Traders and residents rallied last year upon learning the pop-up park would not be returning to Yarraville over summer.

e Yarraville Traders Association wanted the pop-up park back and has raised funds to ensure it runs through until Easter.

Sun eatre marketing manager Kris Jansson said making the park permanent “just makes sense”.

“People have said all through the summer ‘why would they take it away’,” she said.

“We have had such beautiful support from the community with people coming down with a watering can to water the owers or help sta put away furniture at the end of the night. People feel like it’s a real community project.”

Works on the permanent park would begin in July and the park would be in place by December.

e council will be seeking public comment on the plan. \

A team of doctors and nurses is being sent to Sudan to save lives following a fund-raising campaign by the Australia Light Foundation.

e Tottenham-based Muslim community organisation will be sending the medical team to the war-ravaged region next month to assist with healthcare.

ALF’s Sel Sanli says the organisation, which has operated in Maribyrnong for more than 40 years, wants to help people in the greatest need.

“We have decided to send aid and healthcare assistance to Sudan to provide medical help to villagers,” he said. “ e villagers in Sudan have been living in tents and have eye and stomach diseases from dirty water.”

e Australia Light Foundation will sponsor ve doctors and three nurses who will provide medicine and care for hundreds of people over a week at the end of March.

“As a community living in one of the world’s most liveable cities, we feel we are responsible for providing better living

voice of youth slams grog-led violence YOUTH AFFAIRS

Australia’s rst MTV Millennial leader, Williamstown’s Olly Tripodi, is in Canberra this week talking about alcohol-fuelled violence and other issues a ecting his generation.

Young people from all over Australia last November voted Mr Tripodi in as the voice of millennials – people born between 1982 and 2003.

Mr Tripodi says one of the issues on the table will be the misinformation surrounding young people and alcohol-fuelled violence.

“Alcohol does not spontaneously make young people violent,” he told the Weekly.

“ e issue of alcohol-fuelled violence lies

longest-serving parliamentarian, Philip Ruddock.

Mr Tripodi will also meet individually with Speaker of the house Bronwyn Bishop, Greens deputy leader and Melbourne MP Adam Bandt, and former youth a airs minister Kate Ellis.

Mr Tripodi says other issues he will raise include gay marriage, asylum seekers, health, education, environmentalism and climate change.

Mr Tripodi says the media has a role to play in challenging stereotypes.

“Media sensationalism is pushing the idea that young people are violent and dangerous when they drink, which is rubbish.

“Alcohol-fuelled violence is an inappropriate term, in many ways. e issue is with aggression and violent attitudes, not the service of alcohol.”

During his week in the nation’s capital, Mr Tripodi will be part of a roundtable focusing on young people’s disengagement from politics. At the table will be numerous politicians, among them Australia’s third-

better hospital security urgedThe Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (Victorian branch) is calling for greater hospital security in the wake of last week’s stabbing of a doctor at the Western Hospital in Footscray. jail sentence appeal rejectedAn appeal against a ve-year sentence for the stabbing of a Braybrook man has been thrown out in court. Avzi Ejupi was jailed for ve years last year after pleading guilty to two charges of attempted murder and one of recklessly causing serious injury on April 30, 2012. The Supreme Court heard that Michael Jones confronted Ejupi in the front yard of a Braybrook property about 11.30pm after observing someone trying to break into two vehicles. Ejupi, then 38, produced a knife and stabbed Mr Jones three times in the torso. Rejecting the appeal on February 6, Judge Phillip Geoffrey Priest said the sentence was appropriate. \

The man, who initially told of cers he had consumed only two drinks, blew 0.281 when tested at the Williamstown police station. truck frustrations, solutions to be aired at open house forummaribyrnong

Inner-west residents have a chance to share their views about truck tra c at a community forum tomorrow night.

Maribyrnong council is hosting an event exploring short and medium-term solutions to truck impacts and movements across the area.

Council sta will be joined by executives from VicRoads, the Environment Protection Authority and Department of Health.

Maribyrnong mayor Grant Miles told the Weekly anybody would be able to ask questions or raise their problems and have them addressed at the “open house” event.

More than 12 months has elapsed since Ms Hartland presented her question on notice to the minister in relation to government

proposals a ecting truck movements in the western suburbs, particularly

in light of the proposed east-west tunnel. “ e government is showing disregard for the Victorian community by ignoring this key accountability and transparency

instrument,” she said.“ e growing truck problem, public

transport and tra c congestion are issues of utmost importance to the people in the inner west. e community deserve to know what the government is or isn’t doing in their

“ is is really a genuine attempt to get the ball rolling with action on trucks in the inner west; it’s certainly not a tick-the-box consultation session.

“ I really do expect something positive to come out of this forum.”

Cr Miles said the EPA had been taking the issue more seriously, creating a “big spanner in the toolbox” for the future.

e forum comes as western suburbs Greens MP Colleen Hartland accused Transport Minister Terry Mulder of disregarding the community by failing to answer questions about the impacts of truck tra c in the inner west.

old trains defacedNEWPORT

Sta at Steamrail Victoria say they feel “absolute broken-heart disgust” a er gra ti vandals attacked painstakingly restored historic trains at Newport.

e not-for-pro t organisation, which restores vintage steam, diesel and electric locomotives and carriages, discovered the vandalism in the lead-up to its March open-day event.

Marketing manager Cathie Skelton said the vandals had broken in to an area of the Champion Road railyard that is declared dangerous and condemned. “It’s in an area that’s all locked up, which we don’t go in to very o en, so we don’t know exactly when it happened but we found it last week.

“ It’s one of a couple of our old electric trains, wooden ones, that were actually done up by the state. We had a couple of carriages attacked: one of our old diesels, one of our old steam engines.

“We just feel disgust, absolute broken-heart disgust. A lot of volunteer hours go into these trains and we don’t get funding or anything

like that, so it’s just very downheartening.” e vandalism has been reported to Williamstown police.

Built in the 1880s, the Newport workshops were the birthplace of many locomotives

and carriages, dating back to the early 20th century.

Ms Skelton said sta and volunteers hoped to attract big crowds for open days on March 9 and 10. ere will be steam locomotives on

display, heritage diesels and electrics, and the Delorean from Back to the Future. \

Pilots at Royal Australian Air Force bases around the country are practising their routines ahead of this weekend’s Centenary of Military Aviation Air Show at Point Cook.

Wing Commander Adrian Mavros said the air show would provide people with a good insight into the air force.

save shipyard jobs: laborwilliamstown

A delegation of Labor MPs headed by Opposition leader Bill Shorten last week visited Williamstown’s shipyard to call on the federal government to safeguard naval jobs in the west.

During a doorstop outside BAE Systems, Mr Shorten said shipbuilders’ jobs needed to be secured in the wake of 2500 impending job losses when Toyota’s Altona plant stops making cars in Australia in 2017.

He said shipbuilding contracts should be brought forward and kept in Australia.

“If you bring forward the order book for the money that you’re going to spend on warships … then you can save hundreds of jobs ,” Mr Shorten said.

Asked why the Coalition should be forced to order locally-made when Labor had not seen t to in the past, Mr Shorten suggested putting jobs ahead of politics.

“Labor always prefers to buy Australian where you can and, in the case of warships, we certainly say to Tony Abbott that if you decide to build the next two big supply ships and sought the HMAS Sirius and Success [contracts], and you get the work done here in

Australian shipyards, Labor will extend the hand of bipartisanship.”

Labor has started a petition “to save Williamstown’s maritime industry”. It states that unless the Abbott government delivers new defence contracts for the shipyard in coming weeks, BAE will close and 1000 jobs will be lost.

Defence Minister Senator David Johnston said the government was

committed to supporting the local defence industry.

“ e former government’s decisions led to around 100 projects being delayed, around 40 projects

being reduced and 11 projects being cancelled. Under Labor, we saw more

than $18 billion cut from the defence budget over the next decade.”

He said the government intended that the ADF should use Australian-made equipment wherever possible.

BAE spokesman Simon Latimer declined to comment on Mr Shorten’s visit. “We remain in discussions with t he federal government about a range of options to bring forward naval shipbuilding work that would secure the longer-term future of the Williamstown shipyard,” he said. \

FEBRUARY 26, 2014 \ MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY WEEKLY 9

“Comedy’s easy to know when you’ve got it right because the audience laughs,” says a reflective Shaun Micallef of his bread and butter.

“It’s honestly the easiest thing to be proved or disproved. Drama’s a bit vaguer. Drama you

can get away with less or more because it can be grey. But if comedy’s not funny it’s dead, it’s nothing.”

On a Wednesday morning at ABC’s writing hub in leafy Elsternwick the veteran comedian is sitting in an ordinary office. At first it’s hard to separate Micallef from the swag of erratic and oddball characters that became his trademark.

Unmasked, Micallef is sincere, articulate, and self-deprecating.

He’s casually dressed and sporting a bushy beard set to be shed before he steps behind the news chair for the third series of his satirical news and current affairs program, Mad As Hell.

Micallef confesses he didn’t bother following news for much of last year and only came up to speed over the past few months.

“There’s a new government in. I don’t know if you knew that,” he quips.

“The nature of the show means that it needs to be topical and as up-to-date as can be. It’s recorded Tuesday night and goes to air Wednesday night. In the space of a day, hopefully nothing major happens.

“Mind you we’re not a real news service so it doesn’t really matter,” he laughs.

Asked to describe the series, Micallef says it’s a “squint and you’ll think it’s a news program sort of show”, declaring almost apologetically that he reckons it actually looks better than a lot of real news programs.

He suggests there’s no line he won’t cross for a laugh but concedes some topics covered in the second series made him cringe.

“There were certain harder jokes about the world which seemed mean-spirited when you put them in front of a live audience.”

The shift in thinking is one of the major reasons politics has become the show’s pet topic. “Which, let’s face it, never really deals with anything majorly important,” he says.

Micallef believes people like Tony Abbott and Bill Shorten are fair game.

“[But] if you’re gonna make a joke I think it should be about what they’ve done rather than who they are or appearances or anything. That is by and large how we approach things. I’m not sure we take cheap shots at people. Hopefully we don’t.

“Mind you, on a slow news day, why not,” he says with a chuckle.

The 51-year-old was born in Adelaide to an Irish mother and a Maltese father and was drawn to comedy.

“I was a kid who was attracted to comedy. I liked watching Jerry Lewis, for example.

“I’d then go and amuse my friends or my family by doing an impression of him or something that was like it. So I absorbed a lot of that.

“It’s hard to tease out any cultural contributions to it,” he says of his family life.

“Laughter was pretty highly valued. I had a funny uncle and a funny grandfather. Oddly enough, I got most of my approach from my father who was very straight.”

Micallef performed throughout his teenage years and at university but went on to become an insurance lawyer.

“I never really considered it [comedy] was a sensible career or even job. I certainly didn’t think I could sustain myself and an eventual family from it. Also, I don’t like actors. I don’t like the idea of being an actor.”

In hindsight, his late start would prove a blessing in disguise.

“I made all the mistakes I could have made and embarrassed myself by and large in my 20s away from the television camera. Then when I was about 31 that’s when

I turned up on TV.”Micallef ventured to Melbourne in the early ’90s when he first gained recognition as a cast

member on cult sketch comedy show Full Frontal, his most famous character the punch-drunk boxer Milo Kerrigan, still fondly remembered today.

A string of credits over the next two decades has included his beloved show

The Micallef Program, a stint on Sea Change as Warwick Munro, and hosting game show Talkin’ Bout Your Generation and The Logies. He’s also written two books, and even played horse trainer Lee Freedman in the movie The Cup.

“I wouldn’t like to have never had a crack at it,” Micallef says. “I’m glad I did it. I’d hate to think that I’d be sitting there bitterly watching television

thinking I could do better than that.”The father of three admits he couldn’t

have foreshadowed the heights his career would reach.

“That I’m a person on camera is a bit of a surprise and unusual. I’m not entirely sure that I would lead with that. On my tax returns I write occupation – writer. That’s what I am. I’m a writer-performer. I’m not a performer- writer. I’m not an actor.”

Micallef argues he’s not a workaholic but acknowledge finding it difficult to take a breather. There’s no legitimate hobbies to speak of, other than an appreciation of film, and spending time with family,

which usually consists of hopping in the car with his boys and heading down to a comic book

store in Coburg on weekends. “My kids make me laugh. I tend to laugh at stuff that’s got

nothing to do with comedy. Comedy is the re-creation of those moments that I have in real life.”

From the outside looking in you get the impression Micallef is happy with his lot in life.

“I know enough about the business that at some point you approach the end of what is your shelf life and you go do something else. When I’m no longer telegenic enough there’ll be a stage where it will be better for me to move behind the camera and produce and direct and write; which I do.”

That day seems a while off for now with the third instalment of Mad As Hell chugging along and a fourth

planned. “I’m always surprised when something lasts more than one episode,” Micallef jokes. “You go to a

third series and that’s gravy.” \[email protected]

refugees

A Karen refugee from Myanmar says living in Australia has restored his dignity as a human being.

Keh Blut, who spoke at this month’s Karen National Day event in Hobsons Bay, arrived in Australia seven years ago a er being born and raised in a refugee camp.

He works at Werribee’s New Hope Foundation, supporting other migrants and refugees.

Mr Blut said that a er Karen land was con scated by Burmese authorities, thousands lacked medicine, shelter or security and ed to ailand as refugees.

“I was working as a community worker for 26 years,” he said. “I was working with internally displaced people who are hiding in the jungle.

“Political turmoil and civil war have been common to me since I was born.

“ e country is still ruled by the military dictatorship and there are many armed resistance ethnic groups still ghting for their freedom and equality.”

Mr Blut said civil war between opposition groups and the military government had been ongoing since Burma gained independence in 1948. Its national day commemorates a peaceful demonstration by more than 400,000 Karen people who marched more than 1400 kilometres across Myanmar in 1948 seeking equal rights and justice.

e Karen community is the largest group of new arrivals in Hobsons Bay.

Mr Blut said “Karen New Year Day” was celebrated around the world but could really only be a celebration for those free from fear.

“It is illegal to celebrate Karen National Day in Burma,” he said.

“Living in Australia, I started to taste the value of freedom and humanity, and regain my dignity as a human being. I can

live fearless under the Australian laws and regulations. I have the opportunity to learn higher education and work peacefully in this country. anks Australians.” \

This block-fronted Victorian is a prime slice of Yarraville. It’s rich with hallmarks of yesteryear, while tasteful renovations grant it the modern

flavour it deserves. In a tree-lined cul-de-sac with right-of-way,

the house occupies a big portion of the rectangular block and uses every square inch to its advantage.

A leadlight entrance and hallway with elegant archways, dado walls and polished floorboards are a perfect introduction.

Nearby are two large bedrooms with rosettes. One of the bedrooms has a fireplace and both have high ceilings and hardwood-framed windows with timber venetians.

A door from the hallway to the family-meals area retains a zoned living aspect.

The family-meals area has a split-system,

ornate ceiling and fireplace, and incorporates a lovely timber kitchen with feature window, 2pac cabinetry, Chef freestanding cooker and a Blanco stainless-steel dishwasher.

A smartly designed rear section gives this home added appeal. In it are a galley-style laundry and a Victoriana bathroom with clawfoot bath, pedestal basin and large shower.

French doors link to the open, north-facing

deck, beyond which is a double garage with frontage to Francis Street.

There’s also a private gate to a narrow side pathway to the front yard.

The property, re-wired and re-stumped, is close to the city, bay beaches and Footscray and Yarraville shops. \

Contemporary and classy only begin to describe this renovated Victorian built in 1890.

The weatherboard’s period features, such as fretwork,

fireplaces and mantels, ornate cornices, high ceilings and polished floorboards, are combined with mod-cons like a split-system to keep everyone comfortable.

At the front are three bedrooms. Two have built-in wardrobes, while the main room has an en suite with tucked-away laundry.

The fully tiled bathroom has an indoor- outdoor feel with french doors leading to the backyard.

The bathroom has a claw-foot bath, large shower and toilet.

Entertaining will be a breeze with a large, open-plan living-dining room and modern kitchen with glossy white cupboards, black granite benchtops and Bosch stainless-steel appliances, including a 900mm freestanding cooker.

Two sets of french doors from the kitchen lead to a decked entertainment area.

MOtORING \ rod easdown gets behind the wheel

About once a year I get a hankering for the great outback vastness, and there’s no better way to satisfy it than to drive

to Perth. What other national highway gives you 2350 kilometres between traffic lights? And 147 kilometres without a bend? And doubles as a runway here and there?

There’s a world-famous bird observatory out here, Skylab crashed here, old telegraph stations have been engulfed by sand. There are dingoes, brumbies, emus, wedge-tailed eagles and kangaroos. You can see whales from jagged coastal cliffs, go for days without mobile coverage, meet fruit-fly inspectors and pay more than two bucks for a litre of fuel. The Hume Freeway this ain’t.

So when Mazda unveiled its new 3, I asked if I could drive one to Perth. It didn’t miss a beat, but taut suspension meant it did miss a kangaroo.

This is a nice thing. It handles surprisingly well, rides easily and remains comfortable even after eight to 10 hours. It also gets terrific economy out in the bush. The only thing that worries me is the price. It starts at $23,792, not bad value given the equipment, but it’s a lot more than the $19,990 (negotiable) for run-out models, and the $21,000-odd the old model usually started at.

However Mazda thinks it’s sharp enough to make this the best-selling car in the country, which it was in 2011 and 2012,

coming in a close second last year. You have the choice of two beautifully

flexible petrol motors, this one and a 138-kilowatt 2.5-litre, and all models are available with six-speed manual or six-speed auto, the auto adding around $2000. Go for the top model with auto and you’ll finish north of $40k.

But the entry-level Neo will constitute the great bulk of sales and it’s a good car for the money; certainly the best-looking one in its class, especially in sedan rather

than hatch. And it’s nicely equipped with cruise, Bluetooth, USB and tricky fuel-saving technology.

However, you only get a space-saver spare (you fret about such things when the nearest guy who plugs tyres is 600 kilometres distant) and the high window line makes the rear seat a bit claustrophobic, especially for kids. Rear visibility isn’t great. But if it were just you and me tootling around the city I’d have one of these in a flash. \

[email protected]

MAzdA 3 MAxx

What is it? A likely best-seller.

What’s in it? A 114-kilowatt four-cylinder with a six-speed auto.

is it thirsty? I used 10 litres per 100km in the city, 6.3 in the country. The official combined figure is 5.7.

DRivE AwAY $28,427

BRIEFSscanlon aims for high-five Hockey

Andrew Scanlon will break new ground as the rst Victorian to represent Australia at an o cial international Hockey 5s tournament.

 e 5s format is hockey’s answer to Twenty20 cricket, rugby sevens or netball’s Fast5.

Scanlon, a bright young western suburbs prospect, was chosen to represent Australia in 5s at the Youth Olympic qualifying tournament in Vanuatu next month a er impressing at a ‘futures’ camp in February.

While he is a traditionalist, preferring the 11-a-side game, Scanlon is excited by the 5s format and intrigued how it will go on the international stage.

“It’ll be hard and you’ll move a lot more, but it’s going to be fun,” he said.

“You’ve only got three people to pass to, so you’ve got to really pay attention and know your team well.”

Scanlon has only ever taken one sport seriously and wants to make a career in hockey. e 17-year-old from Werribee is leaving no stone unturned in his quest to one day play the Australian Kookaburras.

“I’ve been playing it all my life, so hopefully I can keep going with it,” Scanlon said. “It’s all I’ve really known since I was about three.

“I’ve been given the opportunity to train with the Victorian Institute of Sport .

Hopefully, long term, one day I will play in the senior Australian team, but right now I’m focused on Vanuatu and the under-18 nationals [in April].”

Scanlon needs to look no further than his home club Altona for inspiration.

Luke Doerner came out of the Seagulls nest and went on to represent Australia at multiple Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, Champions Trophy and World Cup events.

“i’ve been playing

it allmy life”

“It helps that he was from there and could make it that far,” Scanlon said.

Among state and national duties, Scanlon is focused on becoming a regular senior player for Altona in the Premier League.

“I’m trying hard to get my tness up so I’m up to scratch with that,” he said. “ en it’s proving I can use the ball and play well enough to stay in the top side.” \

Rams reviewRecord: 13 wins, 11 losses, 1 draw, 2 abandoned (.540 per cent)Final standing: Third place in the west conference.Young’s highlight: “A midweek win against Geelong. It was a dog ght, we had our backs against it and we held on for a long period.”Lowlight: “Our most disappointing were our three games against Essendon where we lost by a run. They’re the only side we didn’t beat this season; we beat every other side in the league at least once”.

gritty RAMS shine in the big league

Baseball

Newport Rams have revealed the steely character that will serve them well for years to come on the big stage of Baseball Victoria’s summer league division 1.

e Rams were not the most talented side but were one of the toughest nuts for other sides to crack in their rst season at the top level.

“Coming back up into rst division, our goal was to be respected and we’ve done that,” Rams assistant coach Gavin Young said. “We haven’t been an easy-beat for anyone. is is the start of something that can possibly be very big for the Newport Baseball Club.”

ere was a real emphasis on teamwork under coach Grant Weir this summer.

“We’ve got a good core group of guys that have got each others’ backs,” Young said.

e Rams made up for lack of experience and depth by doing the one per centers right. ey kept the opposition on their toes with smart base running and their defence was watertight in most games.

Team hitting was a priority, with batters constantly moved around.

“Talking to some of the old members at Newport who were around when we were a strong rst-division club, they’re saying that we’ve broken a lot of the records that have been around the club ,” Young said.

“We’ve had a lot of milestones in this season. We’ve beaten every side except Essendon.”

What did hold the Rams back from a nals appearance this summer was a lack of depth.

e Rams’ disappointing midweek form showed their depth was severely tested when facing three games in seven days.

“ e big challenge for us as a club is to bring up the younger guys, our juniors , and develop them so that we can have more depth,” Young said.

“ We’re relying on 10 to 12 guys to get the work done – we need to spread that to 16.

“ ere’s a number of kids … it’s something that’s high on our priority list, to get those guys up to speed.

“We’re on the right track and there’s a lot of good energy around the club at the moment .” \ LJ

baker hits heroic home run

Ray Baker means a lot to the Williamstown Wolves. He has played and coached there and is a life member of the club.

“Ray has been with us for decades,” Wolves president Ryan Camov says. “He played in some of the club’s most successful teams well and truly before my time. ”

When Baker heard of the Wolves’ inability to gain promotion due to a requirement that all division 1 clubs have a minimum of six junior teams, he went to work and ensured the club got its quota.

The knock-on will be felt for years to come.

“Ray has been nothing short of phenomenal,” Camov says. “He got out there and did clinics and did the active after-school program.

“He’s been well supported by some of the parents and the junior coaches, but it’s a phenomenal effort .

“For someone like Ray to give so much of his time and energy to see the club grow and build it for years to come, it’s a pretty big ask. The more kids you’ve got, the more talent you’ve got in the pipeline .

“All of the successful clubs in any sport have strong junior programs that bring through good kids and good families and bring all those resources to your club that will stick with you for years .”

wolves in top gear

Baseball

Williamstown Wolves seem assured of promotion to the Baseball Victoria summer league division 1.

e Wolves missed out on elevation to the top ight last season because it did not meet the “junior requirement” of six teams and a minimum of 54 kids.

But with the club’s junior section thriving and rst grade having secured the minor premiership and automatic promotion, it seems certain the Wolves will play in the best competition in Victorian baseball next season.

“We’re waiting for o cial con rmation from Baseball Victoria before we get too excited about it, but we have ticked all the boxes, so we’re pretty excited,” Wolves playing president Ryan Camov said.

“Our rst goal this year was to qualify for division 1 and we’ve done that.

“Now we get to enjoy the nals and there’s no pressure on us to have to win to go up …but believe me, there’s not much more that we’re thinking about other than winning the whole series.”

e Wolves face Moorabbin in a best-of-three semi- nal series starting tonight in Preston with games two (at Williamstown) and three (at Moorabbin, if required) to be played on Saturday and Sunday.

e sides will vie for the right to face Springvale or Werribee in the grand nal

series. In a strange coincidence, in last Saturday’s nal round, the Wolves thrashed Moorabbin and Werribee did the same to Springvale.

With nals berths already locked up, the games were e ectively dead rubbers, with each club choosing to approach them in a di erent manner.

Williamstown was happy to roll with its heavy artillery and take winning form into the nals.

e Wolves cantered to an 11-1 victory against Moorabbin.

Wolves coach Dean Marnell got at least two innings of pitching into David Asp, Josh Lee, Jason Lester and Nathan Rogers. On the batting side, Michael Pollock hit two

doubles that scored two and three runs respectively to break the game

open. But the Wolves are not getting carried away

with the result.“In their defence, they rested their best

pitchers and are gearing up for the midweek game,” Camov said.

“It was a great chance for us to roll out four of our pitchers today. And one through nine, I think everyone had a hit. So it’s a good feeling to know that anyone in your squad is capable of coming up with the goods when you need it.

“We just wanted an opportunity to get some extra work into our guys.” \

‘above par’ tally keeps altona hopes highVSDCA

Altona’s total of 180 against Roxburgh Park-Broadmeadows seems unlikely to ru e the Falcons’ feathers.

But A’s captain Shane Jones was content with what he considered an above-par score on day one of a Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association clash with nals implications at JK Grant Reserve on Saturday.

Every run was hard earned for the A’s due to di cult batting conditions that saw movement in the air and o the deck and a Falcons attack that o ered little leverage.

Jones said similar conditions on the second day would make for a tricky run chase for the visiting Falcons.

“It was a really tough deck to bat on, so we thought par would be 150 or 160,” he said.

“To get 180 on that deck was a really good e ort.

“It was swinging and seaming a fair bit all day. ey bowled really good lines and lengths and made it tough for us.”

e A’s were in trouble at 2-7 before the competition’s leading runscorer, Aaron Maynard, joined Jones at the crease.

ey put on 45 for the third wicket to restore order.

Maynard (26) would soon be followed back to the pavilion by Jones (30) .

ose three quick wickets had the A’s on the back foot at 7-105.

Allrounder Lee Elmore came to the rescue with 44, getting valuable assistance from tailender Trent Smith (20no).

“Lee really toughed it out,” Jones said. “Towards the end of the day, he chanced his arm a little bit; he batted really well in that situation.”

e Falcons survived the nal two overs of the day to be 0-1.

With the A’s having narrowly lost two

of their past four matches and with their top-six berth under threat for the rst time this calendar year, Jones is under no illusions about the importance of a successful nish to the game.

e Falcons are one of the sides striving to knock the A’s out of the nals.

“ is game is essential,” he said. “We need to win; there’s no ifs or buts about it. e boys will have to bring their A-game to get a win and, hopefully, secure a nals spot.”

Elsewhere, Yarraville has been routed for 70, gi ing rst innings points to Croydon, which powered to 8-180 by stumps.

It would seem the Eagles will only have pride to play for when play resumes on Saturday.

Williamstown made a quick re 5-232 before declaring a er 58 overs against Sunshine at the Williamstown Cricket Ground.

e visitors are 2-20 in reply. \ LJ

doggie win sets up minor-title scrap

PREMIER CRICKET

Footscray Edgewater will lock horns with St Kilda in a Premier Cricket nal round showdown to determine who will nish the season as minor premier.

e Bulldogs cemented a top-two nish with a hard-fought 52-run win against Camberwell Magpies at the Camberwell Sports Ground on Saturday, with paceman Lucas Dredge the star through a career-best rst XI haul of 5-31.

Bulldogs coach Steve Chapman said the result was in doubt until Dredge took charge late on the second day.

“ e game never really broke open,” he said. “You would not have known who was second and who was 10th until the last four overs of the day when they lost four wickets in a hurry.

“It was a ripping win in as good a game outside of nals that I’ve been involved in during my time in Premier Cricket.”

e Bulldogs opted to bat in to the second day and it proved to be a wise decision.

ey compiled 9-261 declared, a healthy total but one that didn’t totally snu out the Magpies.

“ ere were two things to batting on,” Chapman said.

“One, we wanted to take between 10 to 15 overs out of it and we were conscious we’d lose three for the changeover. So we were only ever going to bat nine or 10 overs. And two, get 30 to 45 runs to make it a competitive total.”

eir e orts gave the Bulldogs enough of a score to defend and ample time to take 10 wickets.

e Magpies’ aggressive pursuit of the target would see them stumble to 5-123.

If the Bulldogs thought they would coast home, they were mistaken as Magpie lower-order batsmen Amrith Eldridge (57) and Jack McNamara (36) took up the ght.

“ e ball was old and that partnership was hurting us,” Chapman said.

“ ey seemed like they could take it o us.”

Dredge allayed Bulldogs’ fears with a ery spell to take the nal three wickets.

e Magpies went from 7-207 to all out 209 in the blink of an eye.

It was a telling reminder of Dredge’s talents three weeks out from the nals.

“He’s as quick as anybody in the competition,” Chapman said.

“He’s got a devastating yorker and he has an action that allows him to reverse-swing the ball.

“ e skill-set that he brings is unique; he’s got a few things that can change a game.”

Footscray Edgewater will host St Kilda in a top spot-deciding two-day match at the Merv Hughes Oval starting on Saturday. \ LJ

no bolt out of the blueCRICKET

History has not been kind to the Williamstown Colts.

Hanni Harb, the Colts captain and president, wants to write a new chapter.

He wants a ‘1’ in the empty box next to the club’s Williamstown and District Cricket Association A turf premierships tally, sooner rather than later.

“We’ve never won an A turf ag in our history,” Harb said.

“You can understand the importance for me as president of the club, and now captain of the team, to do it.

“I’ve been ghting for one of these for a long, long time and we’ve probably got our best opportunity this year to get one. ”

e Colts entered the nal round in a pole position and cannot be dislodged.

ey will go to the nals as the No.1-ranked team in the competition, riding an eight-game winning streak. eir last defeat was way back on Melbourne Cup weekend.

Harb is reading little into what has gone before and knows the top nals ranking will be irrelevant when the rst ball is bowled in the semi- nals.

“Finals are a di erent game,” he said. “You see so many times that teams stumble at the last hurdle and lose in the semi- nal.

“You’ve got to bring your A-game, there’s no doubt about it.”

e Colts, at their best, will strangle the life out of any batting line-up.

ey have four bowlers who have each taken more than 15 wickets : Tarlok Sangha (26 wickets at 12.96), Nat Ward (18 at 10.22), Abhi Shauma (18 at 12.39) and Rauf Bodla (15

at 11.40). If we’re able to get anywhere over 160 or 180 on the board I’d back our team any day of the week to defend it,” Harb said.

e Colts are no slouch with the bat in hand either, scoring the second-most runs in

the competition.All-rounder Shauma is a big reason

why, having made 395 runs at 35.91 to be the leading run maker in the division.

Will Phillips’ (288 at 48) contribution in just six games has

also been telling. In their nal round encounter with

Melton Centrals on Saturday, the Colts, led by Robert Harb (40), posted 203.

Centrals, needing an outright to remain in the nals conversation, were 2-13 at stumps. \

dogs bow out, pride intactBowls

Yarraville-Footscray did the Bowls Victoria metro premier division “their way” and can be proud of their e orts despite it ending in relegation.

e Bulldogs bucked the trend of high-priced, y-by-nighter recruits and rewarded the home-grown talent that took them into Victoria’s top division. e Dogs managed only three wins in the campaign, but were competitive in all but a handful of games en route to second-last place.

“It took two years’ work to get the top side into premier league so we let our own people who d id the work have the bene t of it,” coach Wayne Roberts told the Weekly.

“ ey’re going to learn a lot from that experience of having 12 months in the premier league and they’ll go back to divvy one better players for that next year. We’ll be a reasonable side in divvy one.”

e Bulldogs continued to improve into the season. All three of their wins came in the nal six rounds of the season , the most memorable over powerhouse Moonee Ponds.

“We dominated, led from the rst end all the way through,” Roberts said.

“ ey’re a team that’s in the nals and probably good enough to win the ag.”

e Bulldogs rounded out the season with a 90-70 win against Burwood District.

ey were undermanned without regular Roberts and Alan Dove but found the necessary reinforcements to claim the victory that would see them avoid the dreaded wooden spoon. Mal Reilly (27-13) lled in as skip with aplomb to nish up 14. Ray Caulter (26-19) was the other winning skip, by seven. Jamie Pearce (19-18) went down by a shot, while Nat Black (19-all) had a tie.

Meanwhile, Altona got the four rinks to have the zip win over Mentone that it desired – but still missed out on the nals.

e A’s’ 101-62 victory came courtesy of Brett Foley (26-13), David Zitter (26-15), Brad Peck (26-22) and Matthew Rennex (23-12). \

woodsmen’s finals hopes fading away

Cricket

Spotswood’s bid for a nals berth in Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s north division is on death row. Despite a ve-wicket haul to Ashley Robertson, the Woodsmen were set an enormous task by western suburbs rivals Laverton at Laverton Park on Saturday .

e Woodsmen will need to make 251 . and get some assistance from further a eld a er entering the last round outside the top four.

Any hope of a West Coburg win over fourth-placed Doutta Stars is looking unlikely.

e Burgers managed only 117 and the Stars have already picked o 61 for the loss of just two wickets.

Williamstown CYMS has a ght of its own at the opposite end of the table.

Trying to avoid relegation, CYs need to beat local rivals Altona North and hope that second-last Keilor Park doesn’t make up enough points to sink CYs into the drop zone.

So far, so good. CYs started con dently, being 0-20 chasing North’s 191.

But Keilor Park is well on top against Footscray United. Despite making just 102, Keilor Park has United in all sorts of trouble at 8-48.

In north A1, Seddon is on the verge of victory over ladder leader Taylors Lakes, which would be enough to qualify for the nals. Seddon is 0-26, chasing 109.

A loss to Taylors Lakes would open the door for Altona Roosters to steal top spot on the last day of the season, but the Roosters are in danger of losing to Craigieburn, crumbling to 7-68 in their chase for 107.

In west B1, only an unlikely outright can save Newport-Digman (73 and 1-13) from elimination a er losing on rst innings to Wyndhamvale (5-128dec). \ LJ

CLUBBERS FIRED UP FOR FINALS BERTH SHOWDOWNvtca

Yarraville Club has early reworks planned for Strathmore’s batsmen on day two of their Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division battle at the Syd McGain Oval.

e Clubbers have no time to dawdle – their nals bid is on the line in the rst session on Saturday.

e equation is simple: take six wickets for 29 runs or fewer or face elimination from the nals race.

“Realistically, if we don’t get the rst two wickets within 15 runs, we’re looking down the barrel,” Clubbers top-order batsman

Justin Baker said. “If we can get two new blokes in, they could be in a bit of trouble.”

e Clubbers nd themselves in trouble a er making just 132 in a drama- lled batting performance.

In the process, they had to reckon with their own poor shot selection, questionable decisions and a well-rehearsed Mores attack .

“Credit to Strathmore – they bowled really well, put it in good areas and got it to move in the air as well,” Baker said. “A couple of bad decisions went against us, but that’s cricket.”

e Clubbers had a great foundation to

work from a er openers Baker (18) and Andrew Cullen (24) moved the score to 51 for

the rst wicket. But the removal of Baker had a domino e ect . All bar one of the bottom nine batsmen perished for single gures with three ducks among them.

Adam Contessa showed his class in tough circumstances to provide

39 before going out leg before on a ball that his side claims snicked the bat. “Once he got going, he played some shots

that showed how good a cricketer he is,” Baker said. “He’s quality.”

Strathmore endured a rocky start to be 4-52 a er two wickets to Contessa and Richard Sherlock. But a pair of Nicks – James (19) and Bergin (28) – thrived in the middle order to take the Mores to 4-102 at the close.

It’s a long shot for the Clubbers, but Baker is backing his bowlers .

“We spoke about it a er the game, that if someone doesn’t have belief that we can win this, you might as well not bother turning up on Saturday,” he said.

“We were 4-90, so we’re pretty even in the runs total as we go, and if we get these two out, they’re in trouble. I’m backing our bowlers to get these guys.” \ LJ
