Footscray
Footscray Paint Spot once did a roaring trade in a paint colour oddly known as ‘Elephant’s Breath’.According to 60’s folklore, it was a name used by old-time employee Charlie Aldred when serving customers who could not describe the colour they wanted. “That’s probably elephant’s breath you’re after,” he would tell them.Much to the surprise of the Dobinson family owners, a colour by that name (a delicate pink) actually later came into existence, providing a good laugh. The story is possibly a measure of the industry infl uence the Dobinson family has wielded since opening the fi rst store in Paisley Street, Footscray, 100 years ago.Founded by painter Chris Dobinson, the business has been passed down through the generations, with the namesake great-great-grandson now at the helm of the paint store that boasts the largest range of paint brands in Melbourne.Dobinson’s Paint Spot remains one of the west’s longest operating family enterprises, attracting generations of families through the doors, explains present-day Chris Dobinson. “It’s amazing to think our family has been part of the Footscray retail landscape for so long,” Dobinson says. “It’s always been a success story, even prior to World War II when it was a small shop, with the family living upstairs.
“The business had a signifi cant upswing in the 1980s as people in the west began to renovate their homes and experiment with new colours. It was John Dobinson who saw the beginning of the trend on a visit to San Francisco, where people celebrated their ‘painted ladies’ – the city’s historic weatherboard buildings. Before the trend took off in Australia, it was either white or mission brown.”Nowadays, home decorating is big business, whether DIY or by tradesmen. A browse through Paint Spot will reveal a sometimes bewildering selection of paints, wood fi nishes, wallpaper and equipment. But, says Dobinson, customers needn’t feel daunted because his team of 14 has loads of know-how – and the patience to explain every choice and step on the way. In fact, that’s something that’s remained unchanged, as a newspaper story published in the 1960s affi rms: “Mrs Jones can take 20 minutes if she wishes to decide whether her kitchen chair should be painted pink or blue and one of the Dobinson boys will stand by, offering advice and suggestions. It’s the brothers’ policy…..” “That’s still true today,” Dobinson claims. “I believe our willingness to help and advise customers defi nes our always-personal service – it’s a family trait. Maybe it’s in the genes.”

The traffic and pedestrian counts taken by the Council did not meet the VicRoads criteria for traffic lights and therefore would not attract funding for installation at this time.

government ‘unconscionable’ in footscray market dealings
supreme court
e state government has been found to be “unconscionable” in its dealings with fresh fruit and vegetable wholesalers and growers as they negotiate their move from Footscray to a new market site.
e government, through the Melbourne Market Authority (MMA), has announced the Footscray market will close at the end of July next year, with the Epping market due to open in August.
Although there are fears that date has blown out to early 2015, stallholders were told they had to sign new leases or their market spaces would be opened for national tenders.
In a decision handed down in the Supreme Court of Victoria late last month, the way was cleared for stallholders, represented by
MMA, which presented stallholders with leasing contracts o ering them smaller and inadequate selling and storage spaces at Epping at double the rent they had been paying at Footscray. ey were o ered less
security of tenure and no assurances that local road networks would be upgraded
in time to cope with an extra 4000 to 5000 trucks and cars every day.
e court found that the MMA had tried to force stallholders to commit to new leases in order to
justify work it needed to undertake to complete the Epping market.
e MMA also claimed the Epping move was in the interests of both the state and the Victorian public because the Footscray site had been earmarked to use as a works and assembly depot for
Fresh State, to not sign on to the government’s new lease conditions until details are agreed. is would not jeopardise their chances of securing stalls once the move to Epping is nally made.
Fresh Start chief executive John Roach, who operates at the Footscray market, described the unanimous decision by all three sitting judges as a “landmark”.
“When you’ve got three judges in agreement, that’s a huge win,” Mr Roach said. “For a government to be faced with a judgment of unconscionable conduct is not pretty.”
Costs were also awarded against the government.
Mr Roach said the case stemmed from action taken in December last year by the
construction of the east-west tunnel. Growers nally face the government and
the MMA over the commercial fairness of their lease contracts on October 28.
A spokesperson for Major Projects Minister David Hodgett said the aim remained to open the Epping market next year. \

smelly sludge turns dog beach into ‘demolition zone’altona A black sludge being dredged up and spewed on to the dog beach at Altona has residents worried.
Williamstown’s Jason Bryce says one of Melbourne’s most pristine stretches of sand now looks like a demolition site.
“ A lot of local residents say it’s the best beach around this part of Melbourne.
“All the time you hear people say the dogs have got the best beach in Altona.
“ ey’re depositing this black sand up along the beach. ere’s quite a strong odour. It’s a work site, it’s a construction site, with an excavator and this dirty, smelly, black sludge being spewed out on to the beach and the excavator’s piling it up. It’s a beautiful beach when it’s not being demolished by whatever they’re doing there at the moment.”
Mr Bryce said he was very concerned about the impact of the dredging on wildlife and questioned whether Hobsons Bay council was doing its job as a custodian of its coastline.
“ at’s a very special part of the local area
and there’s a lot of creatures we always see: lizards and sh and sea creatures.
“I’d hate to think that they’re getting driven away – the swans and the birds – by this black sludge that’s spewing out eight hours a day.’’
Hobsons Bay mayor Angela Altair said the dredging was necessary to clear a build-up of sand so recreational boaters could safely navigate their vehicles.
“Earlier this year, council received consent from the state government to undertake a ve-year dredging program at the entrance of the Altona Safe Harbour.
“ e dredging will occur annually with the rst stage in progress. Up to 5000 cubic metres of non-contaminated sand will be dredged each year and disposed of at the intertidal zone opposite Burns Reserve to dry out. Beachgoers also bene t as the sand, once dried, is used to renourish and improve the beach.”\

prodding, checking saves a life MEN’S HEALTH
A visit to a GP has probably saved the life of Altona Meadows resident Kevin Nightingale.
But like many men of his vintage, it took some prodding from his wife Karin before he would see a doctor about a persistent cough.
Mr Nightingale, 74, pictured, thought his lungs were clearing out muck a er he quit a 60-year smoking habit in February, but a visit to the doctor revealed cancer in his lung.
“ I went straight away to Footscray Hospital and they wanted to operate. But during
that month, I had a visit to my cardiologist in Williamstown and [she found] there was something wrong.
“When she found out about the cancer, she said, ‘ You can’t operate on his cancer because he’s got trouble with his heart’.”
Doctors were going to do the bypass surgery rst, but they feared the cancer could grow to an inoperable size , so surgeons did both operations at once. Now, Mr Nightingale is encouraging other men to attend the
Spanner in the Works program at Hobsons Bay Men’s Shed, 280 Queen Street, Altona Meadows, on October 10, when South Western Melbourne Medicare Local will conduct free men’s health checks. Men can turn up any time
between 11.30am and 4pm. \ GD

‘PRISONERS’ OF A CAR PARK SPEAK OUT footscray
Eleanor Street residents have vowed to keep up their ght against an expected 1000 extra car trips a day in their street when a new car park opens for the Western Hospital.
Hong Chai, who has lived with her family for 15 years next door to what will become the car park entrance, fears being subjected to round-the-clock tra c outside her home when the car park opens next month.
“You can imagine the pollution from the cars, toxic fumes, lights shining into our windows, noise from the engines,” she said.
“We won’t be able to leave our doors or windows open. I just feel powerless. It’s just so stressful and scary. Our dream is shattered.”
Mrs Chai echoed the calls of other residents and of St John’s Catholic School for relocating access to the car park through the hospital’s adjoining car park on Gordon Street.
Maribyrnong mayor Catherine Cumming said Western Health had been intractable on that front, leaving the council no alternative but to provide access via Eleanor Street.
Cr Cumming said the project would, however, take pressure o parking in surrounding streets. “It bene ts the hospital but is important for the whole precinct.”
Council infrastructure and engineering director Ian Butterworth said the council
planned to continue with the Eleanor Street entrance. He said an additional 1000 movements would add only about 15 per cent to tra c, and Eleanor Street had the capacity to carry 5000 cars a day.
Council communications manager
Morris Bellamy said the council recognised consultation “has not been as good as it could be”. “In terms of a solution for this precinct, we have a viable and a good solution here and we’re determined to make this work well.” \

trees destroyed ‘for better views’
Tree vandals have destroyed newly planted Norfolk pines at Altona beach, presumably for better views of the bay.
Altona and Seaholme residents have taken to Facebook, demanding tougher deterrents from Hobsons Bay council. One resident called for the installation of CCTV cameras.
e council has erected a large board at the site of a tree which states: “Tree vandals have been destroying your environment.”
e sign is designed to block the view the perpetrator stood to bene t from, but some residents have complained that the board is not big enough.
Mayor Angela Altair said the council had reported the vandalism to police.
“ ree recently planted Norfolk pines were vandalised for the second year in a row,” she said.
“ e council has been noti ed of a number of instances of residents damaging or killing trees in local streets and parks.’’
It costs the council about $700,000 a year for planting and maintaining street trees. \ GD

turkish tribute for state’s rsl clubsanzac day centenary
Consoling words from modern Turkey’s founding father will grace RSL buildings across the state thanks to the dedication of a Footscray community leader.
Mehmet Balikel , pictured le , has been working tirelessly to arrange for framed messages immortalising the words of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, a Turkish army o cer who went on to become the rst president of Turkey, to be hung across Victoria to mark the centenary of Anzac Day in 2015.
Mr Balikel said it was important for Australians to be aware of the tribute Atatürk wrote in 1934 to the Anzacs killed at Gallipoli, which begins: “ ose heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives ... You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. erefore rest in peace.”
“We are starting in Footscray and will go all over Victoria,” Mr Balikel said.
e rst framed reproduction was mounted at Footscray RSL in a ceremony last Wednesday attended by Turkish consul-general Seyit Mehmet Apak and local politicians.
“We are very proud and happy to be sharing the legacy of Turkey with the very valuable allies we have in Australia,” Mr Apak said.
“With Australia we started as adversaries in World War I, but out of that adversity was born a great friendship, a true friendship.”
Altona RSL club president Alan Scott said the branch was the rst in the country to have a Turkish RSL sub-branch.
“In 2015, the Anzac Day service will be a joint e ort at Gallipoli between the Australian, New Zealand and the Turkish governments,” he said. \ BM

women party for a healthy causefund-raising fun
Women are coming together this month for a night of fun and fund-raising.
Women of the West will host a ‘ladies night’ in Footscray to raise funds for Women’s Health West.
e event is the fourth for Women of the West, the brainchild of Sarah Strybosch and Michelle Masterson.
Ms Masterson says the nights attract a broad cross-section of women of all ages .
“ e really good thing about them is that

pet owners reminded: dogs, snakes don’t mixSNAKES
Dog and cat owners are being urged to be careful with numerous animals having been bitten by snakes, one of them fatally, in recent weeks.
Dr Kate Lloyd, of the Altona Veterinary Clinic, described this year’s snake season as the worst and earliest she had seen in 12 years.
e clinic has treated two animals for snake bites, while multiple cases have been seen at the Point Cook emergency centre.
“We had another two clients whose dogs got bitten a couple of weeks ago and we lost a dog last weekend that got bitten,” Dr Lloyd said.
“At the beginning of the season the snakes’ venom is the most potent because they haven’t had a bite; they’ve been asleep all winter.
“ ere is no way I would ever let my dogs o -lead run around Cherry Lake from now probably until April.
“Even at the beach and all the o -leash areas – ne on the sand, but don’t let them
run up into the bushes because it’s just natural that dogs are going to bark and have a go at them, and the snakes are going to have a go back.”
Anaf Massood, whose cat Tia was bitten by a snake, said it was lucky the animal managed to stagger home.
“We don’t let her go out when we’re out of the house,” he said.
“ ey told us is if we hadn’t picked up the fact that she’d be bitten and
taken her within those couple of hours to the vet, then her chance of survival would have been much lower.’’
He said many owners might not realise the cost of treatment
could be up to $5000 and they should consider pet insurance.People can call Hobsons Bay council

Smashing time for police, driver
Police smashed a woman’s car window to get her out a er she drove through a booze bus operation in Millers Road, Altona, on Friday night.
A shopper nearby at Central Square in Altona Meadows said she was shocked to see police surround a car and break through a window about 8.30pm.
Kylie Strickland said police with dogs descended on the driver.
“ e ‘chopper’ was above following the car to the car park,” she said. “ Police cars came from di erent directions of the car park and surrounded the car. ey smashed the window and pulled her out.”

showing an appetite for hunger fightworld food dAY
Oxfam supporters dressed as carrots, bananas and corn shared the ‘Eat Local Feed Global’ message at Little Saigon market in Footscray on Monday.
Oxfam is encouraging people to mark World Food Day on October 16 by hosting a meal to raise awareness of global hunger.
Campaign co-ordinator Olivia Hartigan said sharing a meal with friends, family, workmates or classmates could help highlight the role people could play in a future when everyone had enough to eat.
“From eating sustainably and wasting less food to raising money for Oxfam’s life-changing work and calling on the Australian government to do more to tackle hunger ... small actions create lasting change.”
Supporters around the world are expected to help tackle global hunger by joining the Eat Local Feed Global challenge.
Ms Hartigan said politicians and corporations had a key role to play, but individuals also had the power to help make the food system fairer. “We can start doing this with some simple principles for feeding our families, friends and loved ones.” \ BM

Cr Bri a was born with partial androgen insensitivity syndrome, or intersex. For the marriage, gender was listed as “indeterminate”.
“In countries like the UK, Canada, New Zealand, France, Spain, the Netherlands, and others, a couple is able to marry irrespective of sex,” Cr Bri a said. “Sadly, this is not the case in Australia. Nonetheless, I am very pleased Manja and I are now married even if our marriage is not yet legally recognised in Australia.

marathon effort for asylum seekersfund-raising run
Williamstown’s Olly Tripodi is running for some of Australia’s most vulnerable people as an entrant in the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre’s Run 4 Refugees.
Mr Tripodi says boat people have been politicised and maligned by both sides of politics.
“I think they’re an incredibly vulnerable demographic in our society,” he said.
“All the numbers aside about how many refugees or asylum seekers we accept, they’re demonised in so many di erent parts of Australian media and Australian society as a whole.
“And that’s what I care about – they’re incredibly vulnerable people and we don’t seem to understand that, on the most part.
“I think the ‘stop the boats’ policy is ridiculous. e idea that it’s a choice for individuals to get on a boat and come to Australia as a lifestyle decision is laughable.
“People don’t get on a boat with their family if they’re safe where they are.”
More than $60,000 has been raised to date by individuals and groups entered in Run 4 Refugees, which is part of the Melbourne Marathon on Sunday, October 13.
Mr Tripodi will run 10 kilometres and aims
to raise $400 for aid to asylum seekers.“ e resource centre, other than giving
them a lot of support in terms of nancial aid, skills training, giving them purpose through volunteerism and what not, actually does a lot to reverse those stereotypes,” he said.
“ ey’re usually at the forefront for organising rallies and lobbying .” \

OCTOBER 2, 2013 \ MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY WEEKLY 11
Jasmine envelops the Footscray cottage where 1920s detective and femme extraordinaire Phryne Fisher perches on the kitchen table of author Kerry Greenwood.
The heady scent of a million white blossoms counters the traffic and fast food distractions at the end of the street, offering the visitor a very real illusion of passing through a time zone to where this most prolific of writers fuels her fascination with history and the largely under-written roles that women have within its more conventional tomes.
Research and attention to detail are her greatest allies, along with a vivid imagination and an ability to walk in other people’s shoes, even centuries later.
“I am addicted to researching,” Greenwood says very early on in our interview when we are talking about Out of the Black Land, her only novel, of more than 50 thus far, set in ancient Egypt.
“Egyptian and Hittite history are quite well documented,” she says.
“What attracted me about [researching] Egypt is that there are love songs and shopping lists, jokes and graffiti ... and the textiles; all that gold.”
This wealth of daily life details, the minutiae of how ancient Egyptian society was organised, along with its close connections to early Greece, inspired Greenwood to pose serious academic questions about the era of 18 dynasty kings and the nation’s deadly dalliance with monotheism under the unstable, sun-god worshipping king Akhnaten.
It was learning Greek that transported Greenwood’s already fertile imagination and gift for words and languages into the timeless zone of myths and fairy tales, epic adventures and personal quests.
“I’m an honorary wog, you know,” Greenwood says proudly, pointing out that along the short Seddon street where she has lived for more than 30 years, there are 26 different languages spoken.
She learnt Greek, aged five, after meeting her lifelong friend Themetrula Georgovasilopoulos, who had migrated to Footscray with her family.
French came from school and Sicilian Latin from other neighbourhood children. Multicultural Melbourne provided the playgrounds of her youth.
“I read dictionaries; I still love dictionaries,” Greenwood confesses.
It was once said of American poet, author and social activist Marge Piercy that “she could weave a tale with a pebble and a thread”. Greenwood is of the same ilk, but it took Melbourne publisher Hilary McPhee to focus the almost 30-year-old Greenwood on detective stories and crime fiction as the medium for her writing.
As she was already working full time as a duty solicitor at Sunshine court, Greenwood insisted her first two-book contract with McPhee be historically based.
“I was afraid I would steal a client’s case,” she says.“Poor darlings have enough on their plates without
me stealing their stories. I thought this would be unethical.”
Besides, history is Greenwood’s muse, her fountain of knowledge and the basis of her understanding of herself and her city.
The Phryne Fisher book series is set in 1928-29, the time of “the great wharf strike” at the Melbourne docks, an era that had piqued Greenwood’s curiosity since a thesis from her student days.
It was the time between the two ‘great’ world wars, just before the global depression of the 1930s, and an era of great opportunity for young women prepared to take their chances at financial independence rather than domestic spinsterhood, as was the lot of many a maiden aunt as a result of the dearth of marriageable men due to WWI.
Named after a fabled Corinthian courtesan, Phryne Fisher was created on the tram ride home from Greenwood’s meeting with McPhee.
“I gave her a minor English title so no one can overawe her,” her creator says. “And she’s going to have money and do exactly as she wishes. I wanted her to have complete freedom of action.”
Not for Phryne the “pillow talk” take on how women
build influence; Greenwood’s Miss Fisher is as capable of wielding a pistol, and shooting it if necessary, as she is competent behind the wheel or under the bonnet of her beloved red Hispano-Suiza motor car.
She is as much at home on the battlefields of Flanders and the back streets of Chinatown as she is in the parlours of people of power and persuasion.
“By the time I got off the tram, she’d walked into my head,” Greenwood recalls.
“She has a strong sense of justice. She’s living in a very intense world where all bets are off.
“And because she is a hero, she always works it out eventually. She’s seldom wrong.”
After her sixth Phryne Fisher murder mystery, Greenwood grew concerned she was becoming formula-driven and, not wanting to go down the Agatha Christie track, decided to strip her character down to bare bones for Blood and Circuses (1994).
“She came out of it a goddess,” enthuses Greenwood.
a history of mystery
Kerry Greenwood’s feisty creation is a global star,
writes HELEN GRIMAUX
“I love when Phryne comes in and sits on the corner of the table and says, ‘oh, darling, that was amazing!’”
Greenwood’s Miss Fisher is now making her 20th appearance in print and starring in a TV series that is redefining the world view of Australia and, more importantly, Melbourne, even winning over notoriously snobby French art critics and absolutely wow-ing audiences in New York, London, Paris ... and Brazil.
“And there’s not a single Skippy in the whole series,” Greenwood points out. The 20th Phryne Fisher mystery, Murder and Mendelssohn, was released on September 25 by Allen and Unwin. It is Greenwood’s second publication this year. \

social media’s hazy imageYarraville
e pitfalls of social media are the focus of Pictures from a Parallel Suburbia, a new exhibition by Yarraville artist Llael McDonald. McDonald (pictured) believes social media is an important way for artists to communicate, but it also has a darker side.
“It tells little stories of the type of dissociation people display when they get immersed in the online world of the pro le and the false self,” she says.
McDonald has been painting since an early age, drawing on her upbringing at Spotswood and in uenced by artists Edward Hopper and Je rey Smart.
Her attention is now turning to a possible New York show and her next series.
“It’s called Sideshow and is going to be based around the sideshows of the old carnivals of the ’40s and ’50s.”
Parallel Suburbia is at the Dancing Dog in Footscray until Saturday then at the Famous Blue Raincoat, South Kingsville, from October 14-November 11. \ BM

The areas shaded maroon above show where the analog TV signals will be switched off on 10 December 2013*. After this date, these areas will receive digital-only signals. If you haven’t already done so, you need to get ready for digital-only TV.
How do I tell if I have digital TV? If you can see ABC2, SBS TWO, GO!, 7TWO or Eleven, you are digital ready and don’t need to do anything.
If I can’t see those channels, what do I have to do?Remember, to keep watching free-to-air TV shows, you’ll need either:• one set-top box or a digital TV recorder for each analog TV you use; or• a new TV with a built-in digital tuner.
Most importantly, you do not have to buy a new TV if you do not want to.
Most antennas and cabling should work after the digital switchover. However, if you have any concerns about your reception, you may consider asking an endorsed Antenna Installer to check your antenna and cabling.
If you have any other questions, or to fi nd your nearest endorsed Antenna Installer, visit our website or call the Digital Ready Information Line.
Get ready for digital TV today.
Analog TV is being switched off in Melbourne and surrounding areas on 10 December 2013*
*Please note: switch off may occur earlier in some towns. Residents in these towns will be informed about the switchover dates. See the website for more information.

If lazy days by the pool or a leisurely 10-minute stroll to the beach sound like ideal ways to spend your summer, then put this three-bedroom house at the
top of your ‘to see’ list. With the owner vacating after more than 40
years, the 790-square-metre property nestled on a wide, tree-lined street offers plenty of potential.
Well-kept and well-presented, the house retains some vintage charm in its colour scheme, carpet, decorative mirrored feature
wall, and set of orange bottle-glass arched doors. But the interior has subtle modernity with updates to some fixtures and areas such as the kitchen. There’s plenty of scope to continue modernising – or to keep it as is if you’re a fan of the retro look.
The spacious floorplan kicks off with a sunken lounge with split-system unit, wall-mounted heater and doors out to a side courtyard that’s separated from the rest of the property by a pool gate.
Inside, a few steps ascend to a carpeted dining area and updated kitchen with
split-level bench combining breakfast bar and preparation bench. White cabinetry, oven, cooktop, dishwasher and a nook for the fridge, microwave and toaster are kitchen features.
Off a hallway are two bedrooms with storage cupboards and ceiling fans. One room has a set of doors out to the back garden.
The bedrooms share a shower room, separate toilet and main bathroom that has a wood- panelled feature wall, electric heater, bath and long, wall-mounted vanity.
The main bedroom has a ceiling fan and a roomy en suite with shower. Plenty of linen
cupboards and a laundry with a toilet complete the layout.
Children and parents alike will love the north-facing back garden with its pool, paved undercover entertainment area, garden shed, large lawn and mature trees, including a lemon tree.
Established gardens out front include a patch of lawn with a magnolia tree and beds full of flowering shrubs, daisies and roses.
A side concrete driveway and single garage provide off-street parking. \

Usually when a property like this one hasn’t been on the market for 20 years, it’s run down and in need of a lot of attention. But this little gem couldn’t be
further from that. It’s a beautiful and secluded residence that even the fussiest buyers would be happy with.
The 30-square dwelling has loads of space, including three bedrooms, two with built-in wardrobes and the huge main with en suite and walk-in wardrobe.
A studio with storage space is off the double garage and could be used as a fourth bedroom.
There’s also a study with built-in bookshelf and an upstairs retreat.
The kitchen has stainless steel appliances, including a dishwasher, and separates the living/dining space from the lounge room. From here, double doors open to an enclosed entertainment area with dado panelling, decking underfoot, and a spa, while another set of timber french doors from the lounge room open to a paved area.
There’s so much to love about this place, including its spotted-gum polished floorboards, leadlight windows, ducted heating, split- system airconditioning and a balcony with city views. \

MOtORING \ rod easdown gets behind the wheel
There can’t be many devices that are as technically advanced, or built to finer tolerances, than the diesel motors
coming out of Europe. They are remarkable. The key to smooth running is breaking the
fuel into the smallest droplets possible, and it’s done by increasing the injection pressure at the cylinder. Fuel enters the cylinders of modern European diesels at 2050 Bar. How much is that? Were you to balance a Land Cruiser on a single stiletto heel, you’d be about there.
And they’re made to run more quietly by a pilot burn, injecting a tiny amount of fuel – about enough to sit on a pin head – to start the burn before the main injection of fuel follows a millisecond or two later. A jet travelling at 1000 km/h would cover 25 centimetres in the time between the pilot burn and main burn.
Getting all this to happen a couple of thousand times a minute takes incredibly fine timing and production tolerances. Fuel channels entering the cylinder are a micron wide. Human hair is anything from 20 to 60 microns thick.
It also takes the right fuel. We didn’t get the good European diesel motors here until 2005. Until then our diesel fuel carried too much sulphur for them. The Americans were a couple of years behind us.
Until lately, Japanese diesel motors have been the almost-exclusive province of 4WD and commercial vehicles but, to sell
cars in serious volumes into Europe, Japanese manufacturers have to produce diesels that
not only comply with Euro emission regulations but are also competitive.
They’re getting there, but there |is still refinement to achieve. Mazda is now making a push into the technology in passenger cars and SUVs.The 2.2-litre diesel in the Mazda 6
is a bit noisier and not quite as smooth as those coming out of Europe, but it’s every bit as economical and that’s probably enough
for the bulk of buyers. If you can live with a little extra clatter as the car idles, and deeper, growlier induction noise when you accelerate, this car is a definite proposition, even at a premium of about $3000 on the equivalent petrol model.
The Mazda 6 is such a good thing anyway that getting the bonus of brilliant economy becomes very attractive. It looks good, drives beautifully and has generous cabin space, and it’s a pretty good deal.

48 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 2, 2013
Australian car buyers have never been so spoilt for choice in the compact luxury-car market.
New arrivals such as the all-new front-wheel-drive Mercedes-Benz A-Class and Volvo V40 hatchback have shaken up the status quo around the $40,000 mark, giving dominant players such as the BMW 1 Series, Audi A3 and Mini pause for thought.
But what goes around comes around, and Audi has reloaded with a third-generation A3 built on a new modular chassis architecture shared with parent company Volkswagen’s latest Golf. Of course, Audi has dipped into its high-falutin’ parts bin to give the ve-door hatch – called a Sportback in Audi-speak – a special edge over its white-bread cousin.
Strangely, though, the Audi A3 design team appears to have rested on its laurels this time around, with a mildly evolutionary exterior workover, making the new model hard to distinguish from its predecessor.
Still, it bristles with Audi design cues from the German company’s cookie-cutter design book and could not be confused for anything but a sharp Euro sports runabout.
e all-turbo, all-automatic A3 range starts at $35,600 (plus on-road costs) for the 1.4-litre TFSI Attraction. But our test car was the upmarket, more powerful $42,500 1.8 TFSI Ambition in its front-wheel-drive guise.
Just this month, Audi added a Quattro version of this model, with the same handy 132kW of power but with more torque and the trademark all-wheel-drive grip, for an extra $3000.
Because all A3s now ride on new lightweight underpinnings – up to 85 kilograms lighter than before – fuel consumption and performance have been enhanced, as it takes less energy to propel a trim and taut body. However, sending the chassis to WeightWatchers can have consequences, and we sensed slightly more road noise on coarse-chip bitumen roads.
Despite this, the A3 retains its wonderful Euro-chic driving ambience, with highly burnished surfaces and

switchgear that operates with a satisfying “thunk”. Leather upholstery is standard on all A3s; the Ambition trim level gains snug sports seats with multiple adjustments as part of a package of extras that also includes bigger 17-inch alloy wheels, front fog lights and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with an array of handy buttons for audio control and other devices.
Our test car was equipped with the extra-cost $2990 Technik package, which includes a bigger touch-screen with sat-nav system and reversing camera. The seven-inch LCD screen rises majestically from the dashboard to stand proud when in operation, but we wonder if the extra complexity of the motors and electronic controls are really necessary when compared with a fixed screen.
Our confidence was dented on one occasion when the sat-nav declined to boot-up properly on start-up, but generally it behaved itself.
The A3 is theoretically a five-seater, although the back seat is not the biggest in its class. It is adequate for three children or two large adults back there.
The rear hatch provides access to a commendable boot that offers 380 litres of luggage room, or 1220 litres with the 60:40 split rear seats folded flat.
The best attribute of the new A3 is its 1.8-litre turbo-charged, direct-injected four-cylinder petrol engine. This sweet unit delivers outstanding torque from not much above idle, making city driving a breeze.
Like similar offerings from fellow German companies BMW and Mercedes-Benz, the new-generation Audi powerplant is also highly efficient, delivering a claimed fuel economy of 5.7 litres per 100 kilometres on the official government test. We could not match that, getting 6.7L/100km in our week of mostly city driving, but the result was still commendable, especially as we were tempted to squeeze the accelerator pedal a little too much to feel that lusty thrust off the line.
The engine is tied to the Volkswagen group’s seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, which has been the subject of much publicity after the recent safety recall. We had no such problems with this unit, although we still find it a bit clunky
in operation at times, especially when shifting from reverse to drive.
Once mobile, the transmission shifts admirably and offers the driver the alternative of crisp manual shifts via steering wheel-mounted paddles.
As you would expect from Audi, steering and handling are first class, providing one of the most rewarding front-wheel-drive experiences to date in the compact
luxury-hatch domain. An almost total absence of steering wheel-tugging torque
steer and splendidly neutral turn-in show how the Ingolstadt engineers have this format nailed.
The A3 has a high level of passive safety but, sadly, customers have to pay extra for several extra life-saving bells and whistles that are already emerging on more basic cars. The so-called Assistance Package delivers adaptive cruise control, emergency brake warning, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beam operation and blind-spot warning for an extra $1800.
All up, the new Audi A3 is a worthy and well-priced addition to one of the most hotly contested car classes. Is it better than its major rivals? It comes down to personal taste, so best put a day aside to test drive the lot – and have a ball. \

iaccarino jets to medal honours FOOTBALL
Consistent form and tness was the key to David Iaccarino’s run to the Western Jets’ highest honour, the Barry Round Medal.
Iaccarino walked away with the coveted best-and-fairest award a er returning to the club under the 19-year-old rule this season.
e Williamstown Juniors product put behind him an injury-marred rst two years in the TAC Cup and repaid the faith shown in him by Jets region manager Shane Sexton.
“It’s de nitely been one of my most consistent seasons ... my best year so far,” Iaccarino told the Weekly.
“I really wanted a full year at the Jets so I was fortunate Shane let me come back.”
A move into the mid eld, endorsed by head coach Torin Baker and mid eld coach Craig DeCorsey, paid dividends for Iaccarino.
Previously pigeon-holed in a rebounding hal ack role, the 19-year-old blossomed into one of the standout players in the competition when given more freedom to roam.
He complemented his noted outside run and silky skills with some hard work in the midst of the packs and found a way to kick goals from the mid eld.
Iaccarino’s in uence was signi cant in getting the Jets to the nals.
“ ey’ve been massive this year in my development as a mid elder,” Iaccarino said of his coaches. “ e mid eld is where I love
to play and I was happy they threw me in there and put their faith in me. Hopefully, I delivered.”
If there’s a question mark over Iaccarino, it’s the state of his shoulders.
His bottom-age year was ruined when he required a reconstruction of the right shoulder, and he’ll have surgery on his le
one during this o -season. e positive is that Iaccarino has
no recurring issues on the right side.“I’ve been playing with a bad [le ]
shoulder all year so I’ve got to get that xed up.
“ e right one feels good so I’m pretty con dent the le one will hold
up a er it’s xed.”Iaccarino, who lives in Williamstown, has
nominated for November’s AFL national dra and has spoken to “a couple” of AFL clubs.
He feels as if he put his best foot forward during the season and the rest is out of his hands.
“I’ll try to stay as t as possible up until the dra ,” Iaccarino said.
“Even if I don’t get picked up I’ve been happy with the year I put forward and I can go back to the VFL and nd some avenues there.” \

combine stays loyalto its skips
Bowls
Yarraville-Footscray has bucked the trend of high-priced recruits to go with a relatively unchanged line-up for its promotion to the Bowls Victoria premier division.
e Combine has rewarded the players who took it to the big league and heads into a fresh challenge with the same four skips – Wayne Roberts, Alan Dove, Jamie Pearce and Ray Coulter – who did the job for most of last season.
Combine player-coach Roberts said it was important for his club not to break the team bond built up in the past two seasons.
“It’s a tight little group,” he said. “It took us two years to get there, so we thought we’d stick with the same people – they’ve done all the hard work.
“We didn’t want to bring in four or ve people, which would mean four or ve of our own would miss out.”
e Combine’s only “ins” are unknowns at the premier level.
Aaron Putt returns to the club a er time out from the game and will slot in at third.
Daniel Markham crosses from lower division Flemington-Kensington and will be a lead.
Markham could be a surprise packet a er impressing in the preseason.
“We just threw him in, had a look at him to see how he went and he’s done all right, so he’ll get his opportunity this week,” Roberts said.
“He’s young, he’s keen, he’s never played at this level before but he’s willing to learn.”
e Combine is priming for a tough initiation with Mentone travelling to Francis Street for the season opener on Saturday.
e visitors are more experienced at this level, but the Combine fancies its chances on home soil.
“We’ve got a pretty good home-ground advantage. We’ve only lost two games, I think, in three years on our greens,” Roberts said.
“ ey play on synthetic and we’re lucky enough to get the rst game at home, which will help us.
“ ey’ll be hard, like every other team is going to be hard.”
e Combine will start the season as underdog, a scenario Roberts is more than happy with.
“I honestly think there’s no pressure on us. ey’re the highly paid teams; we’re not. ey’re all expected to win when we play them.”
Altona is the only other side from the western suburbs competing in the top division.
Rosamond and Werribee have been relegated from the division in the past two seasons. \ LJ
dogs put finals specialists at the helmPremier Cricket
Footscray-Edgewater is aiming to take the next big step under new leadership.
e Bulldogs are desperate to gure in the Premier Cricket nals and believe new coach Steve Chapman and assistant Duncan Harrison have what it takes to turn them from unful lled outsiders to genuine contenders.
Chapman has runs on the board in this
regard, having taken Dandenong to the nals in the past three seasons, including a rst XI premiership in 2010-11. e 42-year-old is a level-three coach who has played for Durham at county level in Britain .
Harrison arrives on the back of a successful stint as coach of Melton in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association. He took the Lions to the south-west group rst XI title last season.
e pair will inherit an exciting list from former coach Barry Neivandt.
e Bulldogs had three players – Dean Russ, Dylan Kight and Jake Haber eld – representing Victoria in a future’s league clash with Queensland this week.
e Dogs open the season with ve one-day matches, starting with Ringwood in the comfortable surroundings of the Merv Hughes Oval on Saturday from 10am. \ LJ

rams relish tough openingBaseball
Newport Rams will not waver from their philosophy of developing from within as they prepare to take aim at Victorian baseball’s big league.
e Rams will embark on a season in top- ight summer league division 1 on Sunday with a similar young line-up to the one that earned them promotion last season.
Short-term goals have not compromised the thinking of Rams coach Grant Weir, who wants to build sustained success.
Rams assistant coach Gavin Young said that while it was a young team, it was one with state-level experience that will hold it in good stead in division 1.
“We’ve got a long-term goal to develop players and stay with the youth for the future,” he said.
“ at’s the plan and it’s been working so far, so we’ve got to keep on working and keep on pushing it that way.
“Most of our boys have played state baseball
before so they know what it’s about. Having the belief they can do it [at division 1 level] is probably the biggest thing.”
In Matthew Lawman and Dean Malthouse, the Rams have two on- eld leaders with plenty of experience at the top level.
e Rams decided to bring in an import player a er going without last season.
American Travis Bass, a third baseman who is no slouch on the mound and dangerous in the batter’s box, will be valuable for his versatility.
“He’s been to Australia before and played a couple of years in Perth,” Young said, adding that Bass had also featured with the Perth Heat in the Australian Baseball League.
“He’s been out here, he knows our game, he knows what Australia is like, so he’s going to be an asset to the club in many ways, as well as on the eld as a player.
“He comes highly recommended as a clubman as well.”
Gri n Weir will be the Rams’ opening day
starting pitcher against Geelong at KC White Reserve on Sunday.
Weir has been a consistent performer on the hill in recent seasons.
“Our starting line-up will be similar to what we had almost all of last season,”
Young said. “We’ll stay with our guys and support them until they prove us wrong.”
e Rams have dates with powerhouse clubs Geelong and
Essendon in the opening two weeks.Young welcomes the testing start to
the season.“Everyone is keen to get it going to see how
we match up at the highest level,” he said. “ is will tell us where we’re at and what we need to do. It’s actually good to come up against these teams rst so our guys know what it’s all about.”
Williamstown Wolves, last year’s division 2 premiers, will also make their big-league entrance this weekend. \
