Course Description

The viewpoint taken in the course is that of the senior financial officer of a business firm. The focus is on the management of cash, accounts receivable, inventory and short and intermediate term liabilities. Emphasis is placed on the analysis and forecasting of financial statements, and financial modeling for planning and controlling the growth of the business enterprise.

Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, you should be able to:

Analyze the financial statements of a firm as a basis of appraising business performance from the viewpoint of three groups: managers, owners, and lenders; identify critical points using standardized professional tools of analysis, understand what to do to handle identified weaknesses.

Appreciate the importance of and learn how to develop an appropriate working capital policy; apply the various tools and techniques available to help in the management of cash, accounts receivable and inventory; distinguish the various sources of short-term financing such as accounts payable, bank loans, and commercial paper.

Produce a Statement of Cash Flow (SCF); understand differences between cash flow and income; assess SCF structure and components; understand how the management of cash flow is critical to successful business performance; understand what to do to handle weaknesses identified via professional SCF analysis.

Prepare pro forma financial statements and cash budget; interpret these statements for potential risk sources; conduct sensitivity analysis. Appraise these projections using tools such as Sustainable Growth and the Cash Conversion Cycle. Understand the limitations of these tools in real business situations, and what could be done to address these limitations.

Realize, in the context of simulated business situations, how market developments may significantly impact financial statements; appreciate that multiple drivers may shape these impacts and that the firm may not have full information; recognize and quantify these impacts and their likely consequences; develop and implement effective managerial responses to both challenges and potential opportunities; quickly update and integrate previous strategic decisions;

develop and execute effective communication in support of managerial decision making.

About Your Instructor

Lynn Carty is an assistant professor at the University of Guelph, where she teaches undergraduate accounting and financial management courses. Lynn taught at Wilfrid Laurier University for 10 years before coming to Guelph and recently facilitated an online course in the new CPA PREP program. Lynn is a Chartered Professional Accountant and recently completed a Masters Degree in Adult Education in a self-directed program through St. Francis Xavier University. Lynn’s research is focused on accounting education, and she recently published an introductory managerial accounting casebook. Before teaching, Lynn held a variety of senior roles in the financial services and insurance industries. These included developing an activity-based costing system for an insurance company and creating managerial and financial accounting reporting systems for a mutual fund dealership.

Method of Learning

Throughout the course, we will be investigating short-term financial management concepts and tools from the perspective of a variety of businesses. By building on base knowledge from introductory financial and managerial accounting, you will gain a greater understanding of the information provided by financial statements. This course will enable you to see how organizations manage their short-term financial needs, how they make short-term forecasts, the effect of these forecasts on the need for financing, and the impact of changes in financial markets.

Course Structure

This course is divided in two logical components:

1. The first part of the course (Weeks 1 through 4) covers the illustration of relevant financial management professional tools and methodologies and the application of these tools and methodologies to build a comprehensive financial management assessment of a real life situation, and what to do about it.

2. The second part (Weeks 5 through 12) covers the analysis of cases using online discussions and peer review approaches.

Overall, each unit will take you through a review of most current concepts and issues in short-term financial management. The units are as follows:

What to Expect for Each Unit

You should begin every unit by reading the unit’s learning outcomes. This will help guide your efforts as you work your way through the unit. Next, complete the required readings. Each unit will have readings from different sources. For example, in some weeks you will be reading a textbook chapter, reading the instructor’s notes on the website, and reading a short case. In other weeks you will only be reading a case, because the case will build on readings from prior weeks. This gives you the opportunity to review and synthesize your knowledge and skills as the course progresses. Think of the readings as reference guides that you may need to refer to throughout the course to clarify your understanding of the material.

You will notice the textbook readings list several pages that you are to omit. Follow this carefully so that you do not focus on material you are not responsible for in this course.

Consult the Schedule page for details.

Also, the textbook contains some ratio formulas that have been simplified and/or omitted for the purpose of this course. Refer to the Instructor Notes on the course website for each unit to see which ratios you are responsible for in this course.

In each unit you will be expected to complete a short quiz, participate in case discussions, submit a case report, or provide feedback to you peers on their case

Page 18: MGMT*3320DE Financial Management Course Outline · MGMT*3320DE Financial Management ... Unit 06: Pro Forma Financial ... Title: Finance for Non-Financial Managers Author(s): Pierre

topics. See the Assignments section for details of each of these requirements as well as due dates.

Ask Questions

In this course, you are expected to ask questions of your instructor and find solutions to content or course-related issues with which you are unfamiliar. If you encounter difficulties, the instructor is here to help you. You can post your questions in the Ask Your Professor Discussion. To access the discussion, select the Discussions link in the course Navbar on this website. If you have a question concerning a personal matter, please send your instructor a private message. See the Problems, Questions, Comments section at the end of the Outline for instructor’s contact information.

Students need to remain aware that instructors have access to and the right to use electronic and other means of detection.

Please note: Whether or not a student intended to commit academic misconduct is not relevant for a finding of guilt. Hurried or careless submission of assignments does not excuse students from responsibility for verifying the academic integrity of their work before submitting it. Students who are in any doubt as to whether an action on their part could be construed as an academic offence should consult with a faculty member or faculty advisor.
