TRANSCRIPT
Description The short reaction times and high power to weight ratios
are achieved by sophisticated designs developed by Chemring Energetics UK Ltd over many years. Within the metal body of each device, rapid expansion of hot
combustion products generates very high pressures which
are used to do mechanical work, e.g. drive a piston or cutter. Electric initiation is achieved by the use of specifically
developed fuzeheads which are sufficiently varied to offer a range of sensitivities. To take into account the wide range of uses to which these devices are subjected,
Metron Actuators may be supplied with different fuzeheads e.g. when power supplies are limited a fuzehead with high sensitivity may be required whereas a low
sensitivity may be preferred under circumstances where spurious electric current can be induced. Their ability to rapidly convert small electrical signals into high mechanical work output, their compact size, high
reliability and good environmental resistance make Metron Actuators ideal for automatic or remote controlled applications in Fire Protection, Security,
Defence and Aerospace industries.
Metron Actuators are highly reliable, compact
single shot devices which can push, pull, cut or
shear with a power to weight ratio in excess of
10,000:1. They operate within milliseconds of
receiving the appropriate electrical impulse, a
rate which is almost impossible to achieve
with a mechanical source of energy.
Nomenclature Each device in the Metron Actuators range is
uniquely defined by a standard nomenclature.
Actuators are grouped into five main types:
Nomenclature
Piston Protractors DR2000 series
Retractors DR3000 series
Gas Generators DR4000 series
Guillotines DR5000 series
Igniters DR9000 series
Within each of these series a range of cable finishes
may be supplied. The cable finish is defined by C(x) where x is a number corresponding to the type of finish e.g.
DR2003/C1 corresponds to a piston protractor defined as DR2003 with cable finish C1. The electrical characteristics are defined by the DR
number within each series e.g. DR2003 uniquely
determines the physical dimensions and the electrical characteristics of that protractor. Numerous types of existing cable finishes and
harnesses can be supplied with the actuators. Bespoke cable finishes can also be added to customer’s requirements. Please contact the sales
department for more information.

Operating Characteristics Single Actuator Firing
The required battery or power supply voltage may be calculated from the product of the recommended firing current (I) for the device in question and the total circuit resistance (R) i.e. V = IR Multiple Actuator Firing When more than one actuator is to be fired in a circuit, Chemring Energetics UK recommend series firing as being
the simplest method. In multiple firing circuits all actuators must be of the same electrical sensitivity (eg Type 1). On no account must devices of different manufacture or electrical sensitivity be mixed in the same circuit. Where parallel firing is considered necessary, extreme care must be taken to ensure balanced resistances and the
possibility of the actuator circuit remaining intact after firing must be borne in mind.
Insulation Before firing, an insulation of not less than 100 megaohms at 100 V DC exists between the shunted leads and the
body of the device. Electrostatic Sensitivity Metron Actuators will withstand a discharge of 300pf at 5kV minimum between the shunted leads and the body of
the device. Metron Actuators can be designed to withstand higher levels of electrical sensitivity if required. Device Function Time The function times of the actuators vary with current applied and load to be moved. Typical values may be 10-20 milliseconds.
Hazardous Atmospheres
1. Incendivity tests in 9% methane/ air mixtures have been carried out in accordance with the M and Q Testing Memorandum No. 13 published by the UK Health and Safety Executive. The tests gave no ignition in 200
firings of ‘Metron’ protractors. 2. Metron protractors have been fired by an I.S. low voltage electrical supply in an explosive gas mixture. The test mixture was 40% hydrogen, 20% oxygen and 40% nitrogen, as described in Appendix1, of BASEEFA.
Certification Standard SFA 3007:1981. The tests (conducted in the gas mixture giving the most severe conditions specified in accepted standards for apparatus intended to be used in hydrogen/ air mixtures) gave no ignitions in 200 firings.

The current needed to operate a number of
actuators in series is greater than that
required for a single device.
The reasons for this may be explained in the
following manner.
Consider a series of Metron Actuators to which a
uniform direct current is suddenly applied. Before
any one device can operate the fuzehead must be
traversed by the current for a certain minimum
period of time, usually the order of a few
milliseconds, during which the wire heats up to the
ignition temperature of the pyrotechnic mixture.
The minimum time is termed the ‘excitation time’.
In practice, the excitation time will vary slightly from one actuator to another because of inevitable small
manufacturing variations. After the fuzehead has
received this minimum dosage of current there will
normally be a further lapse before the ignition has
spread throughout the fuzehead and broken the
electric circuit. The time from the first application of
current to the rupture of the circuit is referred to as
the ‘lag time’.
For all Metron Actuators, in series, in an electric
circuit to operate successfully the shortest lag time
of any of them must exceed the longest excitation
time of any of them. In other words, every one of
the devices must receive the full quota of electric
energy to cause its ignition before any single one of
them has completed its lag time and broken the
circuit.
The operating characteristics of Metron Actuators can be represented on a diagram as in Figure 1. Here,
the line A P B shows the relationship between current and lag time, while CPD shows the corresponding
relationship between current and maximum excitation time. Now consider the current i. From the curve it
will be seen that the most rapid actuator will break the circuit in T3 milliseconds, where as the least
sensitive actuator requires the current to flow for at least T4 milliseconds to enable it to operate. At a
higher current i2, however, the excitation time T1 is less than time T2 which is allowed by the most rapid
actuator and hence the least sensitive actuator in the circuit will have ample time to receive its full quota of
current before the circuit is broken at T2.
Somewhere between the two current values i1 and i2 corresponding to the cross-over point P, there is a
value is which will be the minimum operating current for the series considered. In practice, is is always
higher than the minimum operating current io for a single actuator of the same type.
When more than one actuator is to be fired in a circuit, Chemring Energetics UK recommends series firing
as being the simplest method. In a multiple firing circuit all actuators must be of the same electrical
sensitivity. On no account must devices of different manufacture or electrical sensitivity be mixed in the
same circuit. When parallel firing is considered necessary, extreme care must be taken to ensure balanced resistances and the possibility of the actuator circuit remaining intact after firing must be kept in mind. The
principle of series and parallel firing of actuators and detonators is well established.

Description
The Chemring Energetics UK range of Actuators are
well known in the Defence, Safety and Security markets.
The work output is produced by a stainless steel piston
propelled through the base of the actuator by a small
propellant charge. The force available is at a maximum
initially and reduces as the piston extends. The piston is
captive and will stop at the maximum travel. The design
is such that the product is non explosive and can be
stored and transported without recourse to explosive
goods regulations.
They are highly reliable, compact devices which can
push, pull, cut or shear with a power to weight ratio in
excess of 10,000:1. They operate within milliseconds of
receiving the appropriate electrical impulse. The devices are hermetically sealed and are maintenance free. A
monitoring current of maximum 0.01 Amps is sufficient
to show that the device is still operational.
Metron Actuators are approved by the Loss Prevention
Certification Board and the Underwriters Laboratories.

Description The hot gaseous products of the electrically initiated
combustion reactions expand extremely rapidly and are vented, from the brass body of the generator, through end ports. By suitable design of the recipient chamber this
expansion can be used to do mechanical work. The ability to operate from small electrical impulses, their compact size and high reliability make these
devices suitable for automatic or controlled applications such as :
-Driving cutter blades to burst sealing discs, etc.
-Opening Valves -Pushing Loads -Wing Unfolding Mechanisms
-Fin Lock Mechanisms
Metron Gas Generators are single shot
devices for generating very high pressure in
small confined spaces.
Gas Generators Chemring Energetics UK Ltd has designed and
manufactured several variations of the basic device with its specialised design and development facilities.
Chemring Energetics UK Ltd is approved for designing to NATO Standard AQAP-1.
It should be noted that ignition of fusehead composition does not necessarily result in the wire being broken and it is possible that after operation
Metron Actuators may register a resistance.
Characteristics Some typical values are not necessarily minimum values.
When designing applications, users should ensure that adequate safety margins on thrust etc. are applied as normal engineering practice. A Chemring Energetics
UK Ltd technical representative should be consulted
prior to using this data as a specification.
Insulation Before firing an insulation of not less than 100
megaohms at 100v DC exists between the shunted
leads and body of the device.
Electrostatic Sensitivity Metron Actuators will withstand a discharge of 300pf at
5kV minimum between the shunted leads and the body of the device.
Device Function Time The function times of the actuators vary with current
applied. Typical values may be 10-20 milliseconds.

1. Instruction Scope
2. Actuator Characteristics
1.1 This user instruction document provides information on the product characteristics, handling, and instal-
lation of the following variants of Metron Actuators:
DR2000 Series: Protractors;
DR3000 Series: Retractors; and DR5000 Series: Guillotines.
1.2 All information is intended for guidance only. Recipients should satisfy themselves with the suitability of
the Metron Actuator for their particular purpose.
2.1 Metron Actuators are category P1 pyrotechnic articles.
2.2 Metron Actuators are available with varying electrical sensitivity and performance characteristics such as
force, energy, function time, and piston stroke length. The user must be satisfied that the correct part
number, as recommended by the valve/system manufacturer, is fitted. 2.3 The method of ignition for Metron Actuators is by electrically initiation. The electrical characteristics of
articles can be found in the relevant Product Specification Data Sheet.
2.4 Electrical initiation of a Metron Actuator will result in the movement of a piston to perform mechanical
work.
2.5 Initiation of DR2000 series protractors will result in a small metal septum being ejected from the front of
the device, and a piston will project at a high velocity up to a maximum of 20mm in length (Fig 1). The
septum will decelerate quickly due to its weight, and will typically travel up to 30 centimeters if unobstructed.
FIG 1
Protractor As Received Piston projected following initiation
2.6 Initiation of DR3000 series Retractors will result in the protruding piston retracting into the body at high
velocity. 2.7 Initiation of DR5000 Guillotines will result in the piston cutting blade moving at a high velocity to shear

3. Linking and Arrays of Metron Actuator
4. Installation Guidelines
5. Product Safety, Storage and Disposal
3.1 Metron Actuators may be linked to form an array for some applications.
3.2 CEUK recommend series firing as being the simplest and most reliability method to fire multiple Metron Actuators simultaneously. It is critical that only Metron Actuators of the same electrical sensitivity are
linked in a multiple firing circuit. 3.3 It is recommended that users contact CEUK if planning on using a multiple firing circuit. Additional
information on series firings may be sought from Guide-88.
Metron Actuators are used in a wide range of applications and, as such, installation procedures are largely
governed by customers systems. The following installation, monitoring and handling guidance should be observed:
4.1 Metron Actuators must be fitted in strict compliance with the valve / system manufacturers’ instructions.
4.2 Some actuators are fitted with a hexagonal end cap, and care must be taken to ensure that no movement occurs at the end cap relative to the body. Actuators should be installed tight by hand force, and use of a
wrench avoided during installation/removal. Movement of the end cap relative to the body may render the
actuator inoperable.
4.3 Care must be taken to ensure that the actuator cable/lead wires do not twist or flex relative to the actuator during installation. The lead wires are fragile and can be easily damaged due to twisting/flexing.
N.B. this does not refer to Metron Actuators which are supplied with twisted cables as part of the cable finish.
4.4 Electrical test meters and monitoring circuits must be limited to 0.01 Amps short circuit current to prevent inadvertent operation of the Metron Actuator. Unless otherwise stated by CEUK, this
monitoring current level must not be exceeded.
5.1 Users should refer to the Product Safety Data Sheet, PSDS-67, for relevant information on hazards,
toxicity, storage, and disposal of Metron Actuators.
5.2 The actuator should be replaced at intervals as instructed by the valve/system manufacturer, depending on service conditions. Metron Actuators have a maximum total life of 11 years from date of manufacture,
consisting of 1 year shelf life, and 10 years’ service life at standard ambient conditions. More arduous environments may require more frequent replacement. The date of manufacture can be found on the
article and/or packing label.

1. Identification of Product and the Company
2. Hazards Identification
This product is classified as an Article under REACH [1] and is therefore not subject to the requirements for
provision of safety information as defined in EU1907/2006, Article II. While this product may release hazardous
substances, if damaged through improper use, this is not an intended release as defined under REACH.
This data sheet does not provide information on user application but is intended to give suitable information on the hazards posed by the product in its packaged and unpackaged state. The dismantling of this article is prohibited. This article contains hazardous substances not intended to be released
under normal or reasonably foreseeable conditions of use. The Metron Actuator (DR2000 Series) is classed as a P1 pyrotechnic article and is presented as a hermetically sealed
unit with an energetic content of no greater than 100mg.
3. Composition/ information on Ingredients
Product description: The Metron Actuator is a sealed device (cylindrical metal housing with protruding wires)
with no exposure anticipated to the chemical compositions, sealed within, under normal storage, handling and use. Metron Actuators contain a single, or a mixture of energetic compositions. In all instances the maximum mass of
composition within the device is 100mg.
The following compositions may be found in a Metron Actuator, with a maximum mass offered for reference only: Black Powder (potassium Nitrate) ≤ 80mg
Nitrocellulose ≤ 20mg Lead di-nitroresorcinate ≤ 30mg Barium Styphnate ≤ 22mg
Lead Styphnate ≤ 15mg Red Lead ≤ 10mg Silicon ≤ 10mg
Chemring energetics UK Ltd should be consulted for further information on the composition(s) contained within specific products where required

4. First Aid Measures
Normal exposure: Product design (materials sealed inside the device) prevents contact with explosive materials in
normal use. In the unlikely event of exposure to materials inside the device:
Eye Contact: Rinse/flush eyes with water for at least 10 minutes. Remove contact lenses if worn. If
irritation persists, repeat the flushing process. In all cases of eye contamination it is a sensible precaution to seek medical advice.
If an eye is struck by the septum or piston seek immediate medical attention.
Skin Contact: Wash affected area with mild soap and water. Remove any contaminated clothing. If
irritation occurs seek medical advice.
Inhalation: Remove to fresh air. Seek medical advice if symptoms persist.
Ingestion: Do not induce vomiting or give anything by mouth. Seek medical advice. Medical attention and special treatment: Treat symptomatically.
5. Fire Fighting Measures
If safe to do so, use large quantities of water to control/extinguish any fires.
Fire fighters must be made aware of the potential of the device functioning following exposure to heat. Projectiles may result.
Combustion products are toxic (oxides of lead, oxides of carbon and oxides of nitrogen) should they be released from the device. Self-contained breathing apparatus should be worn.
6. Accidental Release Measures (Spillages)
All accidental spillages should be addressed after risk assessment and in accordance with a safe system of work.
Any spillage of articles should involve careful recovery of the articles before placing them into an appropriately labelled and sealed container. Recovery personnel should wear safety glasses and ensure the device is angled away from the face and body. Electrostatic precautions are recommended.
Spillage of substances from Metron Actuators is considered unlikely as the substances are enclosed within sealed units. In the unlikely event that explosive compositions do spill from the article evacuate the immediate area. Take care to cordon off the affected area and avoid walking on or dragging equipment across. Seek assistance on clean-up
and disposal from suitably qualified and experienced personnel.
7. Handling and Storage
Conditions for safe storage:
CEUK recommends that devices should be stored in an appropriately licensed location and within the packaging supplied until required for use. Dry, temperate storage conditions (Min 5oC, Max 25oC), are recommended. When stored under the above conditions, the recommended life for the article is 10 years.
It is recommended that the packaged devices should be securely stored and away from sources of heat. Local regulations may apply.
