C.H.I.R.P Program Receives 2016 Regional Award for Excellence in Education On December 1st, the Community Development Division’s Children Helping in Resource Protection (C.H.I.R.P.) program was recognized by the Northeast Florida Regional Council with the 2016 Regional Award for Excellence in Education. C.H.I.R.P. was implemented in 2008, a time when field trip funding was almost nonexistent for schools. Through recycling revenues produced through local households, the field trips are fully funded. It promotes a fun hands-on learning experience that inspires students’ ambitions and curiosity for their environment and has reached 4,500 students. Students rotate between stations focusing on the wealth of natural resources found in each park such as invasive plants vs. native plants, wetlands and watersheds, water supply, pollution, wildlife, and wildfire management. Instilling students with environmental awareness promotes conservation and ultimately results in future stewards of Florida’s natural resources.
Holland Park Tree Plantings On December 5th, the Community Development Division assisted Verdego landscaping with tree plantings at the new Holland Park playground. The massive Live Oaks were hand selected by staff from Cannon Tree Farms in Brooksville, Florida. These large live Oaks were brought in to create instant shade over the new playground area. The trees weighed in at 5,700 pounds with a 6 foot wide root ball, over 30 feet in height and an average 20 foot spread. Due to their size, a crane lifted and set the large trees in their new homes within the playground and along the perimeter.
Staff Attended Training Session on Green Infrastructure for Coastal Resilience and Low Impact Development Staff attended a 2-day training session at the Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Center’s Education Center in Ponte Vedra. NOAA representatives, engineer professionals, and local experts provided a comprehensive overview of Green Infrastructure for Coastal Resilience and Low Impact Development focused on stormwater volume reduction. The training provided continuing education credits for planners and certified floodplain managers. CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT & ENGINEERING

Sugar is a 5 year old lab/terrier mix that loves attention. She would rather be the only pet because she is single and loving it! She is housebroken and has great house manners. She stays behind the front lobby desk at FHS and greets everyone that comes in to visit. She has a medium activity level but does enjoy a cozy bed! She is already spayed and up to date on her vaccinations. She has a microchip and would love to have a home to call her own. She is very obedient and would love to spend time with you learning new commands. Can you be that special someone for her this holiday season? Come and meet this lovely girl today!
