What Is A Meme??


What is a meme?A meme is “an idea, behavior or style that spreads

from person to person within a culture.”

Richard Dawkins first coined the term “meme” in his book The Selfish Gene in 1976.

Examples of memes include catch-phrases, melodies, and fashion.

Meme is pronounced meem.

Memes can encourage you to better yourself...

...or let you know it’s OK to be who

you are.


Some memes are just funny...

Some memes express truths that expose our vulnerabilities or weaknesses.


Have you ever considered the shark’s perspective?

Some memes encourage you to look

at things through a different lens...


...or to question the rules or mores of society.


Some use sarcasm or irony...


...others question a person’s intelligence...


...and others just question to encourage critical thinking.


And some memes have deeper meanings about stereotypes, racism, discrimination, poverty, or other social issues...

Option 1: Perspectives of Character Meme


Think about stereotypes and how YOU have

been stereotyped.


ASSIGNMENT:Choose a character or historical figure from

your novel. Analyze how this character/figure is perceived by others

(especially others in your novel).

Then create a meme for your character/figure. Use the template given. You can change the titles underneath the box form meme to more accurately fit the

perspectives you are presenting.
