Pins and Needles from the President
Christmas is just days away and the 2017 New Year is
close behind. My hope and prayer for all of you is to have a
wonderful Christmas with family and friends and those of
you who have recently lost loved ones, to find comfort in
remembered memories and the closeness of loved ones
around you.
This year has gone so fast. Can you believe it’s almost
2017? I’ve enjoyed this year and learned many new things
and hope you have too.
I managed to finish my Christmas projects, even the one
for my new great granddaughter, who is just 2 months old.
I’m looking forward to visiting her for the first time this
Christmas.
We’ve had some changes this year. Some we expected,
some unexpected, and I have appreciated your support,
advise and patience. (I really hope I don’t forget the
microphone again!)
Things we need to begin to think about. First: The Quilt
Show. Have you been thinking about a quilt you would like
to enter? What about a position or task you could help with?
Is there an area where you feel you could add some
assistance, advice, or help? Have you noticed someone
working too hard and you could lend a helping hand?
Second: Stitch and Sew Emporium. Are you considering or

working on a project(s) to donate? Do you have any ideas or suggestions for things that
would be of interest to others? What is it that you would like to purchase at the ‘store’?
Maybe you could make one or two of those? Third: Make and Take Classes. Do you have
an interesting project that could be taught in an hour and a half?
As I thought on these questions I remembered the first quilt I put in the Quilt Show.
I think I had ‘just’ joined the guild and was scared to death. What would they think of my
first effort? And you know, I met so many kind supportive people. I didn’t see myself as
an ‘up to their skill level’ quilter. I had just returned to quilting. My daughter talked me
into putting my quilt in the show and it was a wonderful experience. Everyone has a
button that says, ‘what if.’ I’d like to encourage you, if you haven’t entered a quilt or
made a project for the store or taught a class, maybe this is ‘your time.’ Some of us
believe we are just normal quilters and that’s OK. But I recently read a quote I’ve been
thinking about, “Normal is just a setting on the dryer.” There’s really no such thing as
‘just normal’ as it applies to our quilts. We are all unique in our own way. Believe me,
I’ve been looking at some of your quilts. They are beautiful! So, please, this year,
consider what your contribution could be. You may just be surprised. And please bring a
quilt or project to share at the meetings, too. Come and grow with me.
Thank you to all of you who worked to make the Christmas potlucks such a success.
Sharing food, gifts and laughter. Even our new evening venue was a success! Thanks to
all of you.
January’s Let’s Color Together is “Oh. Right, Black and White.”
Speaker/Workshop for both evening and day meeting(s) is Diane Smith-Lewsadder who
will be demonstrating Zentangle. Be sure to come and enjoy.

FROM THE EVENING CHAIR
Hello, Quilters. What a lovely potluck we had this month. Thank you so much to all who brought
decorations. The room was quite festive. And the potholder exchange was lively.
Are you madly stitching on Christmas presents? Remember to take some time to reflect on the
season and to enjoy your family and friends.
See you next year!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.
Keep your stitches straight,
Loyce
HELP!! Teachers are needed for the quilt show classes. If you have any ideas for the classes please, please call me. Shirley

LET’S COLOR TOGETHER!
This month, the month of January, our Let’s Color
Together color is, “Oh, Right, Black and White”.
Now who can’t get Right Black into that?
Black and White prints bring a new dynamic to
choosing a color palette. Black and White prints
make all other colors shine, the other colors become
the ‘stars of the show.’ Prints with black
backgrounds make saturated colors pop while White
background prints have the potential of making the
look more modern or soft. White with cream can
make your quilt appear yellow while grays can dull
the intensity. Using less of the black or white gives
variety and can portray a more contemporary
appeal.
Because Black causes the intensity of other colors to
stand out, if you want a softer look choose softer
colors, if you want a more vibrant look choose ‘hot’
or bright colors. Play with your colors against black
and white and see the difference in the intensity.
The example was a quilt with stars of saturated
bright colors from the center outward, one quilt
used white with a small black print, the other used
black with a small white print but the same colors in
the stars. What a dramatic difference. Both were
beautiful quilts but one gave a soft cozy feel while
the other was a wake up and look at me attention
getter. Beautiful!
So pick a color, have fun and “Let’s Color something
Together.”

Did you enjoy the brown bag
challenge this year? Weren’t the
gifts made by our sisters
beautiful? I sure enjoyed mine.

Stitch and Sew Emporium
In talking with Sandy Medak I am told we
have only a moderate number of donated
items for the Quilt Show ‘store’, i.e., the
Stitch and Sew Emporium. Just a reminder
that time is going to move very quickly. I
don’t know if ‘only moderate’ is usual for this
time of the quilt year but do consider what
you will make to donate. The Emporium is
one way that every member can help or
contribute to the success of the guild.
Thank you,
Donna
QUILT RETREAT The first session of the retreat is full. The 1st session is for arrival on Feb 19th and check out on Feb. 23rd. You must have your items out of the conference center by evening of the 22nd. Second session is arrival on Feb 23rd with check out on Feb. 27th. We must have all items removed from the conference center by evening on the 26th. The second session still has four spaces available. Please check with friends/relatives to see if anyone else wants to attend. Some of you are arriving a day early – appreciate you letting me know so we don’t duplicate each other. Anyone who is unable to take the stairs or needs a handicapped room also let me know. Don’t forget to work on you “ugly” fabric project. More info to come next month. Thanks, Sandy Wilson

Sgt 1st class Kyle O'Connel sent us a picture of
him with his patriotic quilt. It is on his bunk. He told
his dad that it really was nice to have some color
in his "dull" room. This is his second tour in
Afghanistan.
His parents are Theresa and Brian O'Connel who
own Affordable Fencing and Decking.
Kyle has been in the Army 2 1/2 years. He is a
graduate of Roseburg HS. When he is on the job,
he is flying in helicopters, shooting through the
open door as they fly, and might have to propel
down a rope to the ground. He loves his quilt and
thanks the guild for giving it to him.
PATRIOTIC QUILTS
The VA hospital hosted a conference for women
veterans and it was attended by over 60 women.
A patriotic quilt was donated for the drawing. It
was awarded to Sarah Teeter. She was in the Air
Force for 26 years and retired as an E7. She now
works at the VA in finance. She made a comment
that is heard from many veterans, "I really do not
deserve this".

The Umpqua Valley Quilter’s
Guild was established in 1982.
An evening group began
meeting in 2000. The meetings
are held at 10:00am on the first
and third Tuesday of each
month. An additional meeting
is held at 6:00pm on the first
Monday of each month. Both
meetings are held from
September through June.
Check the calendar for
additional dates, times and
special events.
The purpose of the UVQG is to
promote the joy of quilting as a
creative expression and an art
form. The meetings are a time
set aside to learn more about
the history of quilting, explore
new quilting techniques, and
share the joy of quilt making
with the community. The guild
is a 501-C-4 nonprofit
organization.
