P&C DONATION

Each year the P&C generously make financial contributions back to the school. This year the P&C has donated $5000 to continue supporting the Seed Harvest Spoon Program. This program is in its second successful year at CSPS. Student are enjoying this highly engaging sustainability program. Teachers are reporting that students look forward to their fortnightly session and are excited about progress made in the garden.

The P&C has also kindly donated $10000 towards a Mindfulness program taking place in Term 2 for all students K-6. This program is run by the Lifeskills Group. Lifeskills is Australia's Leading Curriculum Based Primary, Secondary, and Professional Life Skills Wellbeing Provider. In a series of eight interactive and progressive lessons, students develop their self-awareness and increase impulse control, focus and empathy.

A note has been sent home this week explaining the program in more detail.

Thank you to our community and the P&C for continuing to support the programs and Identified needs of the school.

GRANT

At the end of last year Michelle, our Seed Harvest Spoon educator applied for a grant on the school’s behalf through the Eco Schools Grant and was successful. The school has received $3500. The grant will go to creating a Four Seasons Organic Food Garden.

We hope to expend the money on more raised garden beds, soil, plants, garden tools and kitchen / cooking equipment.

Well done Michelle…..some very exciting news!!!!

PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS

That time of year has come again where we set aside time to meet with parents as partners in their children’s learning, to discuss progress made, achievements and areas of concern should there be any.

Again this year the process for making a booking is online. The instructions have been included in this newsletter and will be sent home via email as well as a live link made available via the school app under ‘Links’.

This process is simple and streamlined. It will help avoid any time clashes and ensure you get the time you wish.

The site is live and you can begin to make a booking when appropriate. This system still works on a first come first serve basis.

We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on Wednesday 11 April from 3.30 to 8pm.

COFFEE & CHAT

Don’t forget the Coffee & Chat this Friday 23 March after the whole school assembly. While I will not be available to run the session, one of the Assistant Principals will be presenting the 2018-2020 School Plan prior to publication.

Until next time…. Daniela Frasca, Principal

News from the Library

Thank you for your support during our annual book fair sale. Every purchase benefits our classroom and library resources. The most popular themes this year appeared to be Harry Potter and dinosaurs.

Our Stage 3 students are busy finalising their reading assignment submissions. Assignments are due at the end of the term for marking. Each year, students use class time and homework time to complete the reading of 9 quality texts and a number of related tasks. Please see Mrs Rigby, Ms Jessop- Smith or Mr Gifford if you have any questions regarding the expectations of the task.

Our Stage 2 students have been learning about the 2018 Invictus Games that will be held in Sydney. They have designed a canvas artwork that will be displayed over ANZAC Day and the school holidays at Campsie RSL club. As a result of participating in the project, Campsie RSL club will donate $5000 to our school. Our school captains will also represent our school on ANZAC Day by laying a wreath as part of the community dawn service.

Anti bullying On Friday 16 March, our school celebrated the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA).

The National Day of Action is Australia’s key anti-bullying event for schools and in 2018, schools were called to imagine a world free from bullying and share their BIG IDEAS. Each class at CSPS took part in an anti bullying lesson on the day. The day was a positive day of action, bringing students and staff together to help find workable solutions that address bullying and violence.

News from 3/4J

This term 3/4J have been learning to write narratives focusing on different genres. This includes adding rich vocabulary words or we like to call it WOW words.

Here is some of our writing:

The Escaping Cat

Once upon a time there was a lonely bored, grey cat called Tabby. He lived in a fresh garden where they were growing sweet tomatoes, carrots and strawberries! Tabby desperately wanted to escape the garden. Tabby’s owners were an old man and an old lady. They never EVER because they were way too busy doing their work.

Tabby jumped over the fence and finally escaped the boring garden. She went over the grassy fields and across the huge mountains, but suddenly blocked by a rough, strong looking dog called Coby. He reminded her that there was a river behind and that cats don’t like water. So she jumped on his back and he swam in the soaking river and landed safely.

Then Tabby realised that the secret garden was her real home. When she got back the whole little town was gone! Tabby ran back to Coby to ask him to help her. Coby agreed to do so. They both ran back to show Coby. They went to find their town, but wait… they saw the town, but in a different spot and it was smashed into big pieces!! Luckily, Coby sneaked into the machine and broke the cords. The town got built again! They both lived in a barn where Tabby had cute, baby kitties! Coby felt content.

The Lighthouse

I shut the window to the lighthouse as I tried to ignore the people outside. It was a dark and cold night in Ireland. The folk’s people celebrated loudly as I wrote a book.

Suddenly, the light from the lighthouse stopped working and the town went silent. The windows opened again as air came in and blew out my candle. Now it was darker than before.

I got my tool box and a torch, while I ran up the long stairs to the top of the lighthouse. I took a close look at the light machine and put my tool box behind me.

A big cargo ship was in danger and was aiming for the rocks. So I picked up the light machine but it was too heavy. I tripped over my tool box and accidently broke the light.

I was frustrated and worried but suddenly lights started coming towards the light house. I ran back down the stairs and opened the door.

It took me a few seconds to realize that the lights were actually the town’s people holding torches. I was surprised because I thought they didn’t care about me.

We all walked up the stairs and held our torches so the ship didn’t crash. The ship was safe and I was happy to be with the folk’s people after all.

Commotion in the sewers

Bobcuss worked at a bank and lived in the dirty sewers. He was very grumpy, but mainly curious. The sewers were old, smelly and abandoned. One night, as Bobcuss got home, he noticed a weird scale-trail on the ground. He soon found out that his darling house was dangerous.

Bobcuss fell asleep that night knowing that those scales meant something, more importantly, who did they come from? That night, something else couldn’t sleep. It was Basilisk. Basilisk was an enormous snake with huge, bulging red eyes. She was a bloodthirsty, killing machine. She was incredibly hungry! So Basilisk silently slithered towards Bobcuss’s house. Poor old Bobcuss tried to negotiate with her for he was extremely tired. She did NOT agree! So he tried to slowly stomp out, but Basilisk’s reflexes were too fast.

Bobcuss was done for! Eventually, he finally ran to his wardrobe, which was where he kept all his weapons. Bobcuss chose his absolute favourite, a diamond encrusted dagger with the words “No retreat, no surrender!” carved hard into it. He thought that it would give him everlasting courage and become invincible! Bobcuss ran back to the dining room, where Basilisk was impatiently waiting for him. When he held the dagger towards her, she then started laughing and cackling.

Bobcuss asked why Basilisk was laughing at him. She told him that she was vegetarian, and that she just wanted some veggies from him, for there was none on the sewer floors. That day, goblin and giant snake became the best of friends!

Parvovirus B19 - ”Slapped

Cheek”

Numerous cases of the Parvovirus B19 virus have been reported to the school over the last few weeks.

Parvovirus B19 is a common childhood viral illness. It is also called fifth disease, "slapped cheek" or erythema infectiosum. About 50 per cent of all adults have been infected sometime during childhood. Parvovirus B19 only infects humans and cannot be transmitted to or from animals.

What are the symptoms?

The ill child typically has a "slapped-cheek" rash on the face, which may be followed by a lace like rash on the trunk and limbs. Occasionally, the rash may itch. The child may have a low-grade fever, runny nose, and nausea and diarrhoea a few days before the rash breaks out. The rash resolves in 7 to 10 days but may recur in when exposed to sunlight or heat for 3 weeks or longer.

An adult who is infected with parvovirus B19 may have no symptoms at all, or may develop a rash, joint pain or swelling, or both. It is usually the small joints of both hands and occasionally ankles, knees and wrists that are affected. The joint symptoms usually resolve in a week or two, but can last longer. Symp-toms usually develop between 4 and 20 days after being infected with the virus.

How is it spread?

The virus is spread by contact with infected respiratory secretions (for example, by coughing), and from mother to unborn baby. Persons are most contagious before the rash develops.

How is it prevented?

There is no vaccine or medicine that prevents parvo-virus B19 infection.

• Frequent hand washing is recommended to reduce the spread of parvovirus.

Parvovirus B19 (Fifth Disease)

• Excluding infected persons from work, child care centres, schools, or other settings is not likely to prevent the spread of parvovirus B19, since ill persons are contagious before they develop the rash.

Further information on Parvovirus B19 can be found on the NSW Health Website at (http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/factsheets/Pages/parvovirus-B19-and-(fifth-disease).aspx, a copy of which is attached.
