We kNOW YOu Are frOM NeVADA. Tell us AbOuT VeGAs iN A feW seNTeNCes. It’s impossible to go there and not have a good time, even if you lose all your money. I actually grew up in Reno, which we like to say is Vegas’ red-headed little sister. But besides the night life, casinos and shows it’s a beautiful place to be, with Lake Tahoe nearby and the beautiful snow capped mountains in the winter.

WAs luCk A lADY WiTh YOu iN VeGAs?What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas!

We kNOW YOu Are A hAirsTYlisT AND MAkeup ArTisT. WhAT iNspires YOu WheN YOu DO hAir AND MAkeup?Honestly, I love making people feel beautiful.

It’s like an empty canvas that I get to create my art on and to see how confident and happy people feel once I’m finished is so inspiring.

We lOVe YOur lOOk AND YOur CONfiDeNCe. Where DOes ThAT eNerGY COMe frOM?That’s very flattering. As I said previously once I just let myself go and live in that moment it brought out a whole new confidence I didn’t know I had. There’s a quote from Dr. Seuss that I love and I try to live by and it’s “Be who you are and say what you feel because the people that mind don’t matter, and the people that mattter don’t mind.”

Tell us sOMeThiNG NOT MANY peOple kNOW AbOuT YOu.I hate fruit.

My family is there and I miss them every day so to be able to incorporate that into this just really hit home for me. Not to mention the photographer, Roxie, is a great friend of mine and her work is phenomenal. So to know that she was the one behind the camera also helped boost my confidence because I know for sure the pictures will be absolutely fabulous. WhAT Are YOur plANs fOr The fuTure?I have so many and I feel like they’re changing everyday with each new venture I run into. I would love to be a personal hair and makeup artist for the bigwigs one day and that is my ultimate dream. But as for now I just live one day at a time and if I see an opportunity present itself, I take it.

An XTERRA race isn’t your average triathlon – it’s for those who like to get dirty. The XTERRA organization, which provides off-road races all over the world in its America and World tours, combines swim, bike and run courses in some of the most beautiful and challenging locales in the world. Case in point: XTERRA Guam. event has been held on the island for eight years, the last six of which as a stop on the XTERRA America Tour. The Guam Visitors Bureau primarily sponsored the 2012 race on March 10, which was the first XTERRA Guam to count as a World Tour event, offering a $15,000 prize purse for profes-sional triathletes and qualifying slots to the World Championship for amateur athletes. MDM caught up with several of the professional triathletes competing in XTERRA Guam at a pre-event press conference on March 7. Hailing from the U.S., Australia, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, the pro athletes had a lot to say about the demanding and technical race ahead of them.

Graham Wadsworth, an athlete from the United Kingdom, noted that Guam’s terrain makes the race difficult to prepare for from a distance. “You can look at maps [online] and you can tell quite a lot before you get here, but, as with anything, it’s totally different in real life. We look at the road course and go, ‘oh, that looks cool, I’ll just run down that way.’ But when you actually get here and you see the steepness of the climbs and the descents and the stuff you’ve got to climb through, it’s pretty extreme. But it’s great, because it’s XTERRA and kind of anything goes. In other places people might complain, but here it’s hard change.” “We travel a lot, and lot of the races just aren’t technical enough, and this one has a great variety of both uphill and downhill type stuff,” said Jamie Whitmore, an athlete from California, about Guam’s unique weather conditions. “I know the rain — the torrential rain that we had last night — are even going to add to that, so anyone who pre-rode previous to the rain, it’s going to be that much different, that much harder.”

Whitmore knows how to navigate difficult terrain – not only was she the 2005 XTERRA World Champion, and but she also recently won a battle against cancer. Although her fight with the disease left her with drop foot in her left leg, she’s back in the race now, and competed in the Pro Challenge category in this year’s XTERRA Guam. “I definitely know that’s what drives me to want to try, because when you succeed and you get through all of that, it’s doesn’t matter what place you came in. It’s the fact that you did it,” she said during the press conference. “And it’s just going be really cool – and they have the best pictures here, too… I know when I was sick, the picture that Eric [Tydingco] sent me of me going down the waterfall was just like, ‘I remember doing that.’ It’s what heavily drove me back to come here.” Will Kelsay, an American athlete, said he was drawn the Guam by the course’s promise of sheer difficulty and fun.

18 / MAY 2012

Page 21: MDM May 2012

Kelsay summed up his expec-tations for the race with a bit of humor. “I think there will be a lot of Type 2 fun out there. Type 1 being, you know, it’s fun, okay, going to watch a movie, it’s fun, it’s easy, it doesn’t hurt. Type 2 fun starts out fun and then it ends up kind of hurting, and it isn’t really that fun while you’re doing it. But then once you’re done, it’s awesome — you’ve crossed that finish line.” And cross the finish line they did — Australian athlete Ben Allen completed the race in 2 hours 29 minutes for a first place finish among the men, and Swiss athlete Renata Bucher took first among the female athletes, completing the race in 2 hours 47 minutes. Wadsworth completed the race in 2 hours 41 minutes, finishing fifth in the male category; Kelsay arrived seventh in the male category, completing the race in 2 hours 48 minutes. Whitmore placed 17th among the 25 women who competed, and first in the pro challenge category, completing the race in 4 hours and 52 minutes.

“One of the things that brought me here, that I was really excited about, is that I’m always looking for a challenge and some fun. And after racing in Japan last year and traveling with Mieko [Carey, of Saipan], one of the pros as well, she was saying that if I liked Japan I was going to love it here, because it’s an adventure. It’s not just you versus the competitor; it’s you versus the course versus the other competitors. So that’s one of the things that brought me out here.” Wadsworth agreed with this assessment. “A lot of triathlons, a lot of sporting events, you can turn up to anywhere in the world and essentially you might be racing the same guys week in, week out. You could be anywhere, it doesn’t really matter; you could stay in a hotel, turn up, race a course, it’s the same thing week in, week out. But with XTERRA everything is so, so different, and we’re all here to challenge against the course as well as each other.”

... because when you succeed and you get through all of that, it’s doesn’t matter what place you came in. It’s the fact that you did it.

ADVICE

Dear Mark and Jacqueline,

I don’t know what to do about my relationship. My boyfriend and I have been together for a little over a year. I care for him deeply. He admitted to cheating on me several months ago and though it was hard, I decided to try to work things out. It has been difficult. One of the most difficult things is that I don’t feel like he is trying to do anything more to make me feel better about the situation. He still doesn’t understand that I don’t trust him. Should I just break up with him or try to make it work?

N.M.

he sAYs: It’s common for people to do everything they can to hold on to a relationship. It’s what we we’ve been trained to do, by institutions like society and marriage. Not only does it give us the best chance of staying with someone we love, but it gives us the satisfaction of being able to say that we tried our best. Your decision must come from some inner reflection. Are you staying with him because you think there’s still a chance? Or is the trust broken, and you’re just making sure you have a clear conscience about having tried?

she sAYs: There must be a reason you remained in the relationship after he cheated on you. What was that reason? Was it that you really loved him? Was it that you didn’t want to be alone? Or was it something completely different like you wanted to give him a chance to redeem himself and prove to you he could be a better boyfriend? Or was it so you could hold the cheating against him for the rest of your relationship? Your reasons could be a combination of all of these things. I think the answer to your questions is to figure out what you really want. Him or not him. At the end of the day are you going to be happier with him or without him. Hope this helps.

HE SAID, SHE SAIDDear Mark and Jacqueline,

I love my job. There is nothing about it I dislike. I have never been happier at a job. The problem is I don’t get paid enough. I have only been here for a year. Is it too early for me to ask for a raise? L.S.N.

he sAYs: It never hurts to ask. What’s the worst that could happen? Your boss says no? If you are denied a raise, your next issue is a whole separate conversation: to stay or leave. Generally, if you have a family to support, it might be wise to think about supporting them financially. On the other hand, being a happy wife/husband/parent in the home may be a much better way to support your family, in an emotional sense. No one wants to live in a home with a rich, miserable, person. Unless you find a dream job that pays well, you’ll have to compromise. Either learn to make due financially and live within your means, or learn to make do in a job you don’t like. Either way, you can always take some satisfaction in knowing that whatever you are missing, you consciously chose it. And on a small island with a struggling economy, you could consider yourself lucky to have at least one of the two. My opinion? Choose happiness. You will be in a better mood if you enjoy your work. You will be more fun to be around, have more energy, and set a better example to anyone you are trying to support. Some of the happiest people are those who understand it’s all about the little things. Time spent with loved ones, laughing with friends, and not letting the quest for material wealth blind you to what’s really important.

she sAYs: Good for you for loving your job! So many people are jealous of you. Do you realize how lucky you are? Very often in life we hear people say that they would sooner choose job satisfaction over a high salary. But no, here you are complaining that you should be paid more. What kind of an economy do you think we are living in? We all want more money, sure, who doesn’t? But to have a job that doesn’t make you feel like you are wasting away, seems so much more fulfilling. You probably like your job because of the people you work with or the respect you get or the recognition for your hard work. All those are good reasons. I think you should count your blessings before you start poking at your salary. Keep doing a good job and the rest will fall into place. Someone wise told me, “If you are not worth what you are paid, you will never be paid more than you are worth.” Be patient. Wait until your evaluation comes about and your salary will be brought up. I don’t think you should ask for a raise.

Dear Mark and Jacqueline,

I have an irrational fear of dogs. I am a 27-year-old male who is terrified of man’s best friend. I do my best to avoid them. The problem is I am dating a girl who has two very large dogs that live inside her house. I spend evenings in fear trying to spend time with this incredible girl and the dogs are always around growling and even snapping at me. She doesn’t know about my fear of dogs. Actually when she asked me if I was afraid of dogs, I lied. I said no. What do I do now?

G.P.

he sAYs: Your fear isn’t irrational. Dogs can be mean and scary and very unpleasant, especially if you’ve had bad experiences in the past. Unlike me, who is afraid of harmless cockroaches. The point is, it’s natural to have vulnerabilities. More importantly, it’s a sign of strength to admit them. This girl can already sense your discomfort with her dogs. I’m also willing to bet that she would see it as a sign of openness and honesty if you were to just tell her. It doesn’t mean you’re not macho and tough. It means you’re being real. Be open and honest, and give her more of what she likes about you in the first place. It might be a fun opportunity for the two of you to grow together, over some episodes of Dog Whisperer.

...she would see it as a sign of openness and honesty if you were to just tell her. It doesn’t mean you’re not macho and tough. It means you’re being real.

“He said, She said” is a regular relationship advice column in MDM. To get advice from the columnists, send your questions to [email protected] and type “He said, She said” in the subject line.

she sAYs: There is nothing wrong with being afraid of dogs, as I am also terrified of man’s best friend. I have been in similar situations. I think if you are honest with your new girlfriend she will understand. She can put the dogs in another room away from you when you come over or tie them up outside. Or she will encourage you to not be afraid and slowly introduce you to the dogs so you are not jarred. Either way, you will be OK. It is sometimes hard getting understanding from dog lovers when you have cynophobia (fear of dogs).

THE OMG I GOT CHUBBIER COMPLEX

Hafa adai everyone and happy pre-summer to you. It is May, the official kickoff of summer is right around the corner and you can bet your bottom dollar that you are going to have tons of fun for these next couple of months, especially if you are a student and you are going to be on summer break. however, be warned. While summer is tons of fun, it is also scary as hell.

For many, summer break is amongst the most stressful times of the year. Why, you may ask? Well, I am glad you did, because it is with that in mind that I present – The plANeT kYle reAl life GuiDe TO WhY peOple GeT freAkeD OuT DuriNG suMMer breAk frOM sChOOl!

PLANETKYLE

SUMMER BUMMERBy Kyle Mandapat

Alas, our beginning-of-summer chat is done. hopefully, reading this so early in the break will help to alleviate some of your stresses and help you to have a great summer. Besides, you will probably just spend the whole summer thinking about the release of Twilight Breaking Dawn part 2 anyway, right? No? Just me? Either way, have fun friends, enjoy your break and until next month, see you on the radio!

THE WHAT IF MY FRIENDS DITCH ME ISSUE

THE, “DANG I HAVE TO GET OUT OF SUMMER MODE GRIEVANCE”

One Kadu a day keeps chubby Jing Jing away

We are all worried about making the return to the classroom and our classmates thinking, “Wow, Jing Jing got chubbier over the summer.” The fact is, you probably will. Think about it this way, you go from seven hours of doing something that requires your mind and about an hour of eating during the day to twenty four hours of anything goes. While you are taking care of all your summer business, like new video games, late night movies, and hanging out, you are going to need sustenance. So you will eat. If you suffer from this complex, a simple solution can be found. Either ‘A’ which is to buy one uniform in a size larger than you are and wear it until you lose some weight, or ‘B’ use what I call the “No-kadu Mantra.” All the mantra entails is that you simply say, “No-Kadu” for any meal besides dinner. Oh believe me, one summer I would have Kadu for breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert and both midnight and after-midnight snacks. You better believe I bulked up that summer, and my brother said I started to smell like vinegar.

Another form of stress is what I call, “pre-emo” stress. That means that you are going to think too much and make yourself nervous to the point where you get sad as a result of it. This is especially true if you cried during an episode of The Last Airbender or believe that Samwise from Lord of the Rings should have been ring bearer all along. The most common cause of pre-emo stress amongst students is the uncertainty regarding the school landscape, or in normal people terms – being scared that your friends all ditched you during the summer and won’t want to hang out with you anymore. The solution – Rice Krispies treats. How can anyone not be friends with someone who gave them a Rice Krispies treat? If they aren’t your friend afterward, they are probably an alien who might steal you in the night and bring you up into their spaceship. Trust me, not a fun time.

Finally, quite possibly the most stressful thought going through a student’s mind before they go back to school—that they will soon, have to wake up before the sun comes up in order to go to class. I know! This is scarier than any other thought right? You’ll have to wake up. You will have to do your homework. You will have to shower every day. These are just some of the things that students do away with during the summer break, and now you have to get back to it! You are going to be stressed, but you know what? Everyone will be OK… Soon enough, you’ll be waking up without an alarm clock or chicken, you will be sleeping earlier because you have to wake up at 4 a.m. just in case you have to walk to school because the bus is broken, and hopefully, you will see the benefits of regular bathing.

For this one, all you need to do is give it time… and plenty of soap.
