Maia is not your typical girl. She doesn’t particularly care for getting her nails done or having coiffed hair that is never out of place. She cares more about ecosystems and the environment. Read on to find out more about our April cover girl who definitely works hard, but doesn’t often get the chance to play hard.

A friend of mine had told me about a critically endangered fruit bat in the Philippines that has virtually nothing known about it. I thought if someone studies it and brings more attention to it that the remaining populations can be protected. Because no one really knows anything about it, we don’t know what role it plays in its ecosystem-it may play a very important one as a keystone species.

Hafa adai and what’s up to my peepsquad? Dudes, hopefully things are just rocking and rolling for everyone as we get one month closer to the end of 2012! Alright, so it is April and that means two things. Firstly, taxes are due. Make sure you turn them in, just in case we actually do get our refunds within the next year. Secondly, it is my birthday.

Seriously, I am going to be twenty-six years old, and I was thinking the other day. Have I lived up to my standards? have I done everything seven-year-old me said I would be doing by this age? It is with that in mind that I present – The plANeT kYle reAl life GuiDe TO ThiNGs i ThOuGhT i WOulD be DOiNG AT The AGe Of TWeNTY-siX ThAT MAY Or MAY NOT be hAppeNiNG.

DATED A MEMBER OF WILSON PHILLIPS SENATOR OF GUAM

Senator Kyle Mandapat

When I was super young, my life was ruled by three letters – W. W. F. The company then known as the World Wrestling Federation has undergone a name change to World Wres-tling Entertainment, my dream as a child was to be WWF/E Champion. I totally thought I would have done that already. Sure, things were pretty dif-ferent in my brain. I thought I would wrestle Hulk Hogan (who is old now) at Wrestle-Mania in the University of Guam Field House. I thought he would go for the “legdrop of doom” and I would roll out of the way only to hit him with my finishing move “THE SUPERCOOL KYLE TON-GAN DEATHGRIP SLAM FROM HELL’S REGION OF FIRE THAT CANNOT BE EXTINGUISHED” and pin him for the clean victory. I just saw Hulk Hogan wrestle the other day, if he even attempted a legdrop it would spell doom for him, he has had hip replacement surgery… Maybe when I’m 60 we could fight. Gave up on this one when I realized Hulk Hogan is too old to wrestle me.

Another thing I thought I would have accomplished by now was being able to walk around saying that I dumped a member of the pop super group – Wilson Phillips. The singers of the hit song “Hold On.” The one that goes, “Someday somebody’s gonna make you wanna turn around and say goodbye.” One of those girls would be putty in my hands as they feasted their eyes upon the WWF/E champion and the man who unseated Hulk Hogan. It would only be natural for me to date one of them and later, toss her to the curb, leaving her heartbroken. Two children and one ‘It’s complicated’ later, I have actually given up on this one within the past couple years.

Finally, when I found out the minimum age for senators on Guam was 25, I was totally amped! I thought I would be a senator by now. At the time, I was tired of photocopied text books, I was tired of bringing my own toilet tissue to school, and I was tired of the tetanus breeding ground known as playgrounds in public schools. I thought by the time I was 26, I would have al-ready served my first term and be selling my grandma’s homemade doughnuts as a fundraiser for my next run. I thought I would be making sure that our school kids received an adequate education, I thought I would be helping to fund playgrounds for our kids to have fun and be safe in, I thought I would be helping to make sure that life would be better for our people. I gave up on this one… wait I haven’t given up on this… Kyle for Senator 2014?

Healing Hearts has a team of specially trained nurses and doctors able to perform medical-legal examinations. The team of examiners is aware of how to carry out these examinations for criminal justice cases, but they also offer special care and are sensitive to the emotional well-being of the people under their care.

The center also provides crisis intervention, short-term case management to coordinate services and referrals for counseling and other services as needed by those who come in for care.

For victims who have just experienced sexual assault, “First, it’s not your fault. It’s important to understand that healing can only begin once a disclosure is made and there are people available in the community that can help,” Rios says.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and MDM wants to do its part to make the community aware of what services are available to anyone who is a victim of sexual assault. Healing Hearts Crisis Center is Guam’s rape crisis center. The center offers a holistic approach for those who have experienced sexual assault. HHCC welcomes anyone who has suffered sexual assault no matter when the incident occurred, and no matter the age, race or gender of the person. HHCC has a friendly and welcoming atmosphere where the staff is determined to assist victims to feel safe again and regain feelings of trust, control, autonomy and self-esteem.

Ann Rios, the Healing Hearts sexual assault nurse examiner ex-plains, “HHCC’s overall message is to provide a patient-centered environ-ment addressing the immediate medical and emotional needs of the patient. In addition, we emphasize the importance of prevention and aware-ness programs in an effort to increase reporting and reduce sexual violence in our community.”

three teams come down from Japan. We’ve had teams from Australia and we’ve had teams from Hong Kong. The Hong Kong national women’s team has been over a couple of times just to play, because they have a big tournament in March, so they need and want some sort of warm-up tournament where they get tackled. It’s just a good fun tournament with a party atmosphere,” Grantham says.

True GRIT isn’t just for adults, however; young players also have a strong and enthusiastic presence at the tournament due to the game’s expansion into Guam’s schools. Grantham says that the sport has more than 200 young women and more than 400 young men playing flag and tackle rugby across the school system. All told, there are 29 junior varsity and varsity teams active on Guam.

Indeed, rugby has come a long way on Guam, particularly among female players. “This year we’re finally pleased to say we

have girls playing tackle rugby for the first time. You could see [the girls] were ready, and the parents were asking. The parents approached the schools, and the schools approached [the Independent Interscholastic Athletic Association of Guam] to get permission. Now it’s all there.”

Aside from True GRIT and the high school circuit, both old and young members of the GRC also compete internationally in Asia. “The Asian Five Nations is really the pinnacle of what we do – it’s an Asian rugby union, kind of a sponsored tournament. It’s called the Asian Five Nations because the top five teams play and then we have division I, II, and III. We’re in division three,” says Grantham. “This year we think we have the best chance we ever had of actually winning. We normally come second or third. We’ve never come fourth, and we’ve never come first. So this is our year.”

If they do advance in the tournament, it will likely be due,

in no small part, to the fierce determination of Guam’s players. The Asian Five Nations’ website describes Guam as being known “as ‘the Rock’ for its volcanic base, but it is also a good description of their unyielding style of rugby.”

Grantham proudly acknowledg-es this reputation. “Our guys are just aggressive, and solid, and they don’t like getting beaten, so they really pull out all the stops to show that, you know, we’ve got 160,000 people, but we’re not just here to make up the numbers. We’re here because we’re competitive.”

Grantham says all someone who wants to play needs to do is show up at Wettengel Field. “They just need to come to the rugby field on the weekend, because there are always rugby people there, from now until the end of May there will be rugby people there. Just talk to somebody; rugby is a pretty friendly sort of place. Just introduce yourself and say ‘I want to play.’”

Guam rugby is a tough sport, but it’s also a social one. “It’s a serious social tournament,” jokes Stephen Grantham about the Budweiser True GRIT (Guam Rugby International Tournament), the highlight of the rugby season on Guam. He’s a former businessman originally from New Zealand, now retired, and the current president of the Guam Rugby Club.

Formed in 1997 as way to officially consolidate the sport on the island for joining the Guam National Olympic Committee, the GRC’s creation made it possible for Guam to host the South Pacific Games in 1999. The True GRIT tournament was put together in 1998 to help Guam rugby players prepare for international competition, and it’s been repeated every year since.

This year the True GRIT tournament celebrated its 15th anniversary, and welcomed local and international teams alike when it kicked off in March. “Generally we have two or

“We used to throw these yard parties at different locations from Pago Bay to Tamuning at the old Spike gym. We would take pictures of all our tournaments because every tournament we threw, we had like 20 teams.”

Matanane posted pictures from these early tournaments to his Facebook, gaining the attention of local clubs and bars. One of those bars, Ball Scratchers, reached out to Matanane and his events promoting company SPNL Events, and a partnership was born. That was three years ago.

“We started off as one Friday a month the first year,” he says. “The second year we started doing two Fridays. By the third year we were doing four Fridays, and then in the middle of the year

we started Last Wednesdays,” he says. These days, Ball Scratchers is known as much for its beer pong as its billiards.

In addition to drawing crowds to the bar, organizers see the tournaments as a way to encourage friendships and camaraderie among a wide range of players.

“It’s a good community of people,” says Aaron Tamayo, tournament host and member of SPNL Events. “If you ask anybody that comes through here, it’s probably the most diverse group of people thrown together on any given Friday on Guam. You’ve got a good mix of locals – people from the south, to the central, to the north. You’ve got military people from all branches. They

hear about Ball Scratchers from their friends and they end up playing. It’s just a great group of people.”

Players have been known to meet up outside of tournament games as well.

“Everyone hangs out, even outside of beer pong,” says Tamayo. “I even know the Yigo uptown handshake because of it. We threw a couple barbecues and get-togethers. You’ll see a few military guys there that probably would never have come, but because of beer pong we’re all connected.”

Matanane says that feeling of community is the best part of the games.

Beer pong is a game that demands accuracy and excellent hand-eye coordination. And a high tolerance for alcohol doesn’t hurt, either. The game has only grown in popularity in the years since its arrival on Guam from college campuses and house parties in the U.S. mainland.

Marvin Matanane started playing beer pong five years ago as a student in Florida.

“When I was going to college, beer pong was really popular in the states,” he says. “Then I came here and nobody was really doing it.”

Eager to introduce his local friends to the game he played back in the states, Matanane began organizing informal tournaments around the island.

champion Brandon Taijeron, whose winnings supplement his income as a coffee shop barista. “Everyone underestimates beer pong as just a drinking game, but to me it’s a sport. You’ve got to have hand-eye coordination;

you’ve got to have concentration. One night, you can shoot and not miss once. But how consistent can you be? It’s not as easy as people think it is.”

As beer pong surged in popularity, Matanane saw a fresh

“The beauty of it is that – with the military people that do come, the local people that do come – it’s the one place that military and locals come together in a competitive sport without drama,” he says. “You will not see one fight.

“It’s not about the prizes, it’s not about the money and it’s not about the trophies. It’s about the community that we bring together.”

But the games aren’t all handshakes and weekend barbecues. These are tournaments, after all, with money at stake – as much as $1,000 in a single night.

“Honestly, what brings me here is the competition,” says frequent tournament

opportunity for Guam to make its mark in international competition.

“Last year, we sent a team of two to the World Series of Beer Pong, a $50,000 tournament in Las Vegas,” he says. The beer pong

tournament is the largest in the world. Guam’s team placed 190 among 440 teams.SPNL Events has been raising funds since January, doing everything from selling food plates

to staging car washes. The goal? To raise enough money to get Guam’s top five beer pong teams to Las Vegas for next year’s championships.

Players don’t necessarily have to travel all the way to the states to win big, however.

“We’re doing a $1,000 tournament every first Friday,” Matanane says. “Every second Friday it’s $400, every third it’s $500 and every fourth is $400; every last Wednesday is $400. You could win $2,700 a month on just beer pong. That’s more than most people’s salary.”

“It’s not about the prizes, it’s not about the money and it’s not about the trophies. It’s about the community that we bring together.”

he sAYs: You should absolutely mention it to your boss. In fact, this is more of a problem with your boss not doing his or her job, than your co-worker. How does your boss not know about your co-worker’s poor work habits, and its effect on your operation? It seems to me that you are being exploited by both of them. Start a simple document about all the incidents involving your co-worker. After you have some reliable evidence, bring your concerns to your boss. If your boss doesn’t do anything about it, go to the next higher level, and so on. If your workplace has an equal op-portunity representative, try that too. Ultimately, it comes down to choosing to stand up for yourself. If nothing is done about your situation, there are plenty of places willing to hire an honest, hard-working person like you.

she sAYs: What a lousy situation. I think you should probably talk to your co-worker before you mention it to your boss. You could end up making a bad situation worse if you go straight to the boss. I would talk to your co-worker, tell her you know about the Tumon incident and next time you would appreciate a heads up if she needed a break from work and maybe you guys could have a cool system where you cover for each other from time to time. You should also mention that you would appreciate a ‘thank you’ for all the times you did take care of her projects because she might not even know it was you who took care of them. You might find out that she also has done you a few favors you are not aware of. More than anything it is im-portant you keep hostility out of the workplace. If after you speak to her about this and she continues to behave this way, then it might be time to bring it up to the boss.

Dear Mark and Jacqueline, I have a co-worker who seems not to care about her attendance at work. The worst is when she comes in late, leaves early or doesn’t show up, and I inherit her workload. I don’t like to let my work pile up and I prefer to be ahead of things. But when she doesn’t show up and I have to do her work, I look like I am a slacker who lets my work pile up. She never thanks me for covering for her and one particularly difficult day she didn’t show up for work and I had to handle all her projects, I was told by my roommate that she was having lunch in Tumon with her boyfriend. I wanted to mention it to my boss. What do you think? - T.E.

ADVICE

24 / APRIL 2012

Page 27: MDM April 2012

Dear Mark and Jacqueline, I made the mistake of being too friendly with a girl I met on Facebook. She was an attractive girl and she seemed very nice. I didn’t know many people on Guam because I just moved here. She accepted my friend request and she responded when I sent her messages. I invited her to the movies sev-eral times and finally one day she accepted. After the movie, she thanked me and I sug-gested that maybe next time she should invite me for drinks. I knew where she hung out and I also knew from her Facebook page that she liked a specific kind of high-end jewelry. I thought I would be nice and get her a gift and bring it over to the bar she and her friends liked to go to. When I got there she was mortified that I showed up and she looked at me like I had a disease. She deleted me from Facebook and ignored my calls and text mes-sages and informed me that if I tried to con-tact her again she would file stalking charges against me. What did I do wrong? - J.A

Many women understandably are skeptical of anyone trying to get close to them, period. And unfortunately, in your case, this is exactly what happened.

he sAYs: What could possibly be wrong about following your heart, being courageous, and taking a risk for a girl you liked? You even took the time to pay attention to her interests, which women ap-preciate. For all of human history, this is how it has always worked. Until about 10 years ago. Gone are the days of Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan movies, where thoughtful and romantic lovers go to wild lengths to profess their new-found love. In the new Facebook era, the world is full of online predators, cyberbullies, identity thieves and stalkers. There is a general sense of withdrawal from people who seem clingy, needy, or desperate in any way. Many women understandably are skeptical of anyone trying to get close to them, period. And unfortunately, in your case, this is exactly what happened. You may not like it, but this is the reality in which we now live. So you can either change with the times, or stand your ground. There may be a woman who still believes in Tom and Meg. If you don’t feel like compromising, then you’ll have to start looking for her. If you do feel like adapting, consider playing it a little cooler next time. Give the girl an opportunity to show that she likes you, and have confidence in yourself. Think about blending in a sense of equality to women, along with your sense of chivalry. You may feel a whole bunch of pressure lifted off your shoulders.

she sAYs: Sounds like you came off a little like a stalker. If she didn’t invite you, how did you know she would be there? Did you look for her car? Check her status updates? Did she expect to see you? Some people really don’t like to be surprised. Has she ever invited you there? Don’t you think it was a bit premature for a gift? You only went to a movie once. You seem to have studied her Facebook page rather diligently. On the one hand you obviously alarmed her. But, on the other hand you might be a little old-fashioned and deemed your actions appropriate and indeed innocent and sweet. However, Facebook did you some favors. If she didn’t want the world to know where she hangs out and what kinds of necklaces she likes to wear, she shouldn’t broadcast it all on Facebook, I guess. Regard-less of her desire to share her life on the Internet, she still should have invited you to meet her. Sorry, but I think you overstepped your welcome.
