VISIT US ONLINE TODAY: http://www.mymcpa.net / Presidential Welcome - Fall 2010 By Will J. Cribby - President 2010-2011 Greetings MCPA and welcome back! I hope that you have all had a successful beginning of the semester and that things are starting to settle in for the new academic year. This is my first update as your President of MCPA and I am very excited to fill you in on some professional development opportunities that the executive board has been busy working on for you, as well as give a general welcome. Fall is my favorite time of the year; as we welcome new and returning students to our campuses, as the temperature starts to drop and the leaves start to turn, and we start settling into the routine of another academic year. For many, we are coming to the end of the first six weeks which are usually very busy but also very important for our new students to build connections in their new communities. Congratulations for making it to this point and a sincere thank you, for all you do to provide much needed services and support to our students. This is also an important time to review goals you have set for yourself. Not only should you be focusing on goals you set as part of last year’s performance appraisal, but you should also devote some time to set personal goals. Often these personal goals are things we tell ourselves we are going to do someday but never seem to make happen. As role models to our staffs and the students we serve, taking time to accomplish personal goals exemplifies wellness and balance. Make sure that you are being realistic and set goals that are attainable. Write them down and keep them in a place that you can easily find or post in plain view to help remind you. Sometimes the act of writing these goals down helps us to commit to ourselves to achieve them. Lastly, don't forget to plan out the steps to complete the goals you set as well as make sure you schedule the required “you time” needed to do the work needed to accomplish them. Your 2010-2011 executive board had a very successful goal setting retreat at the end of June where we set goals and planned out our schedule for the year. We have a dynamic Executive Board this year that is dedicated to meet the needs of our organization and is focused on planning inexpensive and convenient professional development opportunities for you. Greetings MCPA and welcome back! I hope that you have all had a successful beginning of the semester and that

things are starting to settle in for the new academic year.

We kicked off the year with our first Coffee Talk on September 24th, held at MCPHS- Boston that was focused on Legal Issues in Student Affairs. We had Janet Elie Faulkner, the Senior Assistant University Counsel at Northeastern University; lead a great discussion highlighting important laws and terminology as well as the implication of these laws in the work we do on our college campuses. We focus our coffee talks on “hot topics” and current trends in Higher Education and plan, two each semester, following a quarterly schedule. Our next Coffee Talk is set for November 12th at Eastern Nazarene College.

As always, we welcome your suggestions and feedback. Feel free to contact any of us on the Executive Board. Our email

addresses can be found at www.mymcpa.net by clicking on the Executive Board link.

Here is to another amazing year with MCPA!

Sincerely,

Will J. Cribby

Next Generation ConferenceFeature from ACPA provided by Jessica Colwell

Are you an undergraduate thinking about going into Student Affairs? Do you work with undergraduates considering the field? You should consider attending or sending students to the Next Generation Conference.

The Next Generation Conference, simply referred to as "Next Gen", will be held Saturday and Sunday, March 26-27, 2011 prior

to the start of the ACPA Baltimore 2011 Convention. Next Gen is a unique opportunity for approximately 100 undergraduates from across the nation to learn about careers in student affairs. Participants will meet and learn from current graduate students, graduate preparation program faculty, and seasoned student affairs professionals who work at a variety of colleges and universities across the country. This is a great way for undergraduates to explore the profession and gather information to plan their future.

There are scholarships available for students interested in attending, for more information please visit the Next Generation website (http://convention.myacpa.org/program/next-generation.php) to hear more about Next Generation from past program participants and ACPA leadership please visit our YouTube channel (http://

Coffee Talk 1 - In Reviewby Sara Hummel Mueller

On September 24, MCPA hosted the first Coffee Talk of the year, “Legal Issues in Student Affairs.” Held at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (Boston), Janet Elie Faulkner, Senior Assistant University Counsel at Northeastern University, led the nearly 2-hour round table session focused on practical legal issues faced by student affairs personnel on a day-to-day basis. Attorney Faulkner summarized the top ten laws pertinent to practitioners, including FERPA, which she explained in detail. Additionally, she reviewed important legal terms all practitioners should know. Throughout the presentation, Attorney Faulkner discussed cases involving litigation

against colleges and universities that pertained to various functional areas, including Student Activities, Residence Life and Student Conduct. Overall, the program successfully provided a broad overview of legal issues in our field.

Every Newsletter MCPA picks one or two new or current MCPA members to be featured in our membership spotlight. Know

Name: Amanda Turnley Graduate Program: Suffolk University MEd Administration of Higher Education (graduated in 2009) Current Institution: Emerson College Current Position: Housing Operations Coordinator Date Joined MCPA: I don’t know specifically, though I was a member in 2008-2009, then joined again in Aug or Sept of this year.

What first got you interested in the field of Student Affairs?  I was nervous about going to

college as an undergrad at Drew University in Madison NJ, but as I got involved in different groups and organizations and grew so much that first

year, I knew I wanted to get involved in leadership positions on campus.  I became an RA and headed up a few different organizations, and realized that I absolutely loved working with students in a Higher Ed setting.  After college, I took a risk and moved up to Boston to begin my first position in Student Affairs as a Residence Director;  six years, a Masters Degree and a few different positions later, here I am! Will you be attending the ACPA Convention this March? If so, what are you looking forward to about it?  Unfortunately I do not think I will be attending the ACPA Convention this March, but I have attended the past two and loved meeting new people and learning new ideas in the field. What would you say is one of the "hot issues" you are seeing facing students on campus this Fall? Particularly in light of recent events, I think acceptance and appreciation of diversity is a very hot issue.  When a tragedy occurs such as the one at Rutgers University it

brings to the surface how bullying, intolerance and lack of understanding can have such a devastating impact on a person, and that we as Student Affairs professionals have a responsibility to address this issue and make our campuses a safe and enjoyable place for all students.  I do believe, however, that many of our students are not only incredibly accepting and compassionate, but want to help promote that positive attitude on campus.  Recently about 800 Emerson students rallied to counter a protest of ‘The Laramie Project’( http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1649214/20101003/story.jhtml) – this incredible power of student voices inspires me to continue to address this hot issue myself!

What is your favorite fall activity? I love the crisp fall weather, and am particularly fond of New England autumn traditions like apple picking at various local orchards!
