Program Session One

Goucher College’s Peer Media5on Service:

Conflicts, Conundrums, and ‘ccomplishments! Kasey Quinn, Community Living Coordinator, Goucher College

Mary Wahl, Community Living Coordinator, Goucher College

Room: 272

When engaging conflict, it is no easy feat to honor self-determina/on and find

collabora/ve win-win solu/ons for everyone involved. Launching a peer media/on

service at a small college with limited resources is even more challenging although the

rewards are highly restora/ve and extremely worthwhile. Community Living

Coordinators Mary Wahl and Kasey Quinn will examine the conflicts, conundrums, and

accomplishments of ins/tu/onalizing a peer media/on service at Goucher College.

So you think you want to work in Higher Educa5on?

Eddie Wright, Associate Director of Admissions, Mount St. Mary's University

Lorrie Budd, Assistant Director of Student Life, The Community College of Bal/more

County

Room: 259

Lorrie Budd and Edward Wright will host a panel of higher educa/on professionals

with the purpose of giving interested undergraduate students some 1-1 /me with

new and seasoned professionals in the field. All appropriate ques/ons are fair to ask.

There will be a diverse panel eager to educate the future of our profession!

The Next Genera/on Conference, simply referred to as Next Gen, will be held

Sunday and Monday, March 3-4, 2013 prior to the start of the ACPA 2013 Las Vegas

Conven/on.

Next Gen is a unique opportunity for approximately 100 undergraduate students to

learn about careers in student affairs. Par/cipants will meet and learn from current

graduate students, graduate prepara/on program faculty, and seasoned student

affairs professionals who work at a variety of colleges and universi/es. This is a great

way to explore the profession and gather informa/on you need to plan your future.

Service Project Informa5on

Ac5ve Ci5zenship

Toni Aho, Interim Assistant Director of Student Life, The Community College of

Bal/more County

Room: 259

Engage your hands and your head as you assemble Guatemalan Worry Doll kits for

children receiving treatment at John's Hopkins Bloomberg Pediatric Center. These kits

will provide sick kids with a distrac/on from their pain and anxiety. This ac/vity will

provide you with the opportunity to consider how you can impact your community

and take steps toward ac/ve ci/zenship. Plus, learn what it means to be an ac/ve

ci/zen and how you can put that into ac/on in your life!

Leading Leaders: Crea5ng and Maintaining a Diverse Group of Student Leaders

Chris/ne Krieger, Assistant Director for Programming, Goucher College

Alex Queener, Goucher College

Room: 259

Building a strong, cohesive team is one of the biggest challenges for student

leaders. How do you maintain energy? How do you keep returners engaged? This

session will explore the process of crea/ng, engaging, and inspiring an involved,

effec/ve, and impacVul group of student leaders.

Face Time: Ini5a5ng Courageous Conversa5ons and Crea5ng Interac5ons of Value

and Valida5on Aisha Rivers, Program Coordinator, Goucher College

Room: 269

Ini/a/ng in-person conversa/ons when race, sexual orienta/on or other iden//es are

present can be difficult and is o@en averted to avoid shame, guilt, or conflict. At the

same /me, having interac/ons where all par/es feel valued and their iden//es

validated is an important piece to those conversa/ons. Without this dialogue, what

opportuni/es are lost, offenses commi?ed, and assump/ons made? This session will

engage in reflec/ng upon iden/ty to inspire courageous conversa/ons that create

greater civil interconnec/ons.

Program Session Three

AMP It Up: Giving Students the Why

Solia Bickersteth, Mount Saint Mary's University

Samuel Frushour, Ac/vi/es Management Program/ Student Leader, Mount Saint

Mary's University

Room: 259

Student leaders must be given the proper resources to ascertain a high level of suc-

cess. Fundamentally, this comes from the "what, how, and why" model. Just like stu-

dent development theory, it is not the ac/on or the process of comple/ng the ac/on

that makes the case. Instead, it is the reason behind it. This session focuses on giving

students the necessary leadership tools to develop their why, ci/ng real life prac/ces

at Mount St. Mary’s University and their profound effects.

It’s All in the Smile: Crea5ng Customer Service Moments

Edward Wright, Associate Director of Admissions, Mount St. Mary's University

Jeffrey Griffith, Joanna Hale, Melissa Hilleary, Ma?hew Mastroma?eo

Mount Ambassador Coordinators Mount St. Mary's University

Room: 269

We have interac/ons with people at many different levels. Regardless of whether the

situa/ons we encounter are full of excitement or frustra/on, the people involved are

the customers of our profession. This presenta/on will provide simple strategies on

incorpora/ng the basics of customer service and how using such strategies can turn

any situa/on into a posi/ve experience.

Do you keep hearing about professional associa5ons, but you're not sure

what they are? Professional associa/ons are smaller groups of individuals within the larger profession

of student affairs. Associa/ons may be based on type of interest, region or

division. Consider joining a professional associa/on in your field(s) of interest - or at

least check out its website. While not all associa/ons have membership op/ons for

undergraduates, many may be willing to help you find a mentor in your field of

interest. As of 2012, ACPA's undergraduate membership is just $29 per year.

News, blogs, twier - O, My! Blogs and higher educa/on news websites can be a great way to figure out from

different perspec/ves both what's going on and what it's like to work in the field of

student affairs.
