The essential element of transdisciplinary skills includes those capabilities that the students need to demonstrate to succeed in a changing, challenging world, which may be disciplinary or transdisciplinary in nature. These skills are best developed in the context of authentic situations such as those offered through the PYP units of inquiry. Within their learning throughout the program, students acquire and apply a set of transdisciplinary skills: social skills, communication skills, thinking skills, research skills and self-management skills. ( For more details on each set of skills, check out our school website.) It is important for all teachers to foster and support the development of skills by providing opportunities embedded in authentic learning experiences. When learning about and through the subject areas, students acquire the particular skills that define the discipline of those subjects. The skills selected as part of the PYP framework are valuable, not only in the units of inquiry, but also for any teaching and learning that goes on within the classroom, and in life outside of school. What do we want students to be able to do?

The essential element of transdisciplinary skil ls includes those capabilit ies that the students need to demonstrate to succeed in a changing, challenging world, which may be disciplinary or transdisciplinary in nature. These skills are best developed in the context of authentic situations such as those offered through the PYP units of inquiry.   Within their learning throughout the program, students acquire and apply a set of transdisciplinary skil ls: social skil ls, communication skil ls, thinking skills, research skills and self-management skil ls.   ( For more details on each set of skil ls, check out our school website.)It is important for all teachers to foster and support the development of skil ls by providing opportunities embedded in authentic learning experiences. Internat ional Baccalaureate Update

By: Sabrina Rowan, IB PYP Coordinator

It seems the wintery Ohio weather has found us once again. During these cold, blustery days, our fabulous McKinley Global Kids are continuing to demonstrate all of the attributes of our student learner prof ile.   The students in grade 3, 4 and 5 are working on building ?global-mindedness? through activit ies built around the books ?If the World Were a Vil lage? and ?This Child, Every Child? by David J. Smith. During these learning experiences, children are discussing and ref lecting on a range of topics, including; nationalit ies, populations, languages and education.   I am amazed at their insight and thoughtfulness while engaging with each other during these lessons.   Their open-mindedness and curiosity about the world around them is helping to build a greater appreciation, respect and tolerance for our local and global neighbors.

Throughout the month of February, McKinley will continue to focus on the IB Attitudes of curiosity, creativity and cooperation. A recognition assembly is scheduled for Friday, March 5th.

Curiosity- Eager to learn about nature, the world and the world?s people and cultures.

Creat ivity- Imaginative in thinking and approaching problems.

Cooperat ion- Working together for the good of the group.

Please continue to talk to your child about attributes and attitudes of global-minded people. For more information, go to the McKinley International Baccalaureate page on our school website.   Also, don?t forget to check out the IB Spotlight section of this newsletter.

A Note From The Academic Coach

By: Michel le Nizen , Academic Coach

It is hard to believe it is February and our McKinley kids are thriving!! We just celebrated our students successes at   l iving out the McKinley Motto   and IB attributes through their words and actions at our Fabulous Friday event where students could ?buy into? a cookie decorating and snowflake decorating extravaganza !   The students had a great t ime enjoying a cookie decorating   and snowflake creating activity.   It was awesome to see our McKinley   students? creative minds hard at work creating innovative snow f lake designs that will be displayed in the hallways of our school.     Throughout the month of February   our students will continue focusing on our third PBS pinnacle, Responsibil ity, and reinforcing our IB learner attributes   and attitudes.     Towards the end of February students will embrace the fourth pinnacle of PBS: Dedication and the correlated IB learner attributes   and attitudes.   McBucks   and McKinley pride abound as students work dil igently to   exemplify these qualit ies.   It is always exciting to see the pride students exude when they earn the ?golden fork?   and free entry into the McBuck events for working hard to be the most ?principled? class during lunch and recess!   Even off ice referrals have been signif icantly decreased during January as students are internalizing ref lective decision making, responsibil ity, and ownership of choices.   Our February PBS event will be a Thril l ing Thursday Event where students   will be able to ?buy into? a Game Day   where all our favorite games can be enjoyed! (Jenga, Go to the Head of the Class, Candy Land, Twister, Junior Monopoly, Skip bo, UNO).   A letter will go home closer to that t ime allowing students to bring in their favorite game.   As we celebrate students? successes, please know how much we value and celebrate our parent successes as well .   Without the help, collaboration, and support you offer each day we would not be able to thrive as much as we do and be a GOLD school!   Thank you for being a team with us to help our students soar to their fullest potential and being partners with us in our PBS and IB journey to continued success and excellence!   Our McKinley pride is high!!

The preschool has scheduled a variety of outreach f ield trips for the remainder of the year. We will be partnering with the Lake Metroparks, Western Reserve Junior Service League, Willoughby Fine Arts and the Cleveland Children's Museum.  Each group will provide an opportunity for the students to experience new and exciting thing.  The Metroparks will bring in animals for the students to visit with.  The WRJSL is providing a well put together puppet show.  Willoughby Fine Arts is bringing a variety of instruments for the students to touch and hear.  The Children's Museum will introduce students to a couple of famous sculptors and the students will get to make their own sculpture. At the preschool we are always looking for volunteer readers. If you are interested in spending about 15 minutes with us to read a story please contact Kelly Porcello at [email protected].
