In my last article I described how one feature of real-everyday-and-ordinary-life is that “curve balls” happen all the time, and as a result, sadly, it doesn’t matter how hard we try, plans get broken too often. Since then, I came across a well-known personal trainer in the U.S. on social media similarly stating that “life’s curve balls (he used the same words!) happen all the time.” Intrigued I read on, but unfortunately his solution just didn’t seem to make sense. “Accountability” was the answer he claimed and in training with him, he would make you more accountable, thereby preventing you from allow-ing the curve balls to disrupt your plans.

Now the reason I bring this experience up is because I want to show you how this “accountability” is not only not your only answer but can actually be damaging too. Sure, the more driven and determined one is, the more likely one is to succeed. But it doesn’t matter how ac-countable, driven or determined you are if the examples of curve balls I suggested last month occur: cars not starting, Wi-Fi dropping, the weather, children’s accidents: little Billy’s nose gushing with blood because he banged into the kitchen counter.

But if “accountability” is our only solution to sticking to our exercise and health plans and any of these curve ball events happens, we’ve got problems. For not only have we missed a work out that we need to make up, but we also feel incredibly guilty that we missed the work out and guilty that we may feel irritated that little Billy got hurt, even though he is our son and getting hurt wasn’t his fault.

The key point I am making in this edition, then, is that

before I move on to more practical advice, for that ad-vice to make sense it’s hugely important that we under-stand how our exercise perspectives could change.

And so rather than ramping up the “accountability” pressures and seeing our “selves” as the problem when our curve balls de-rail us, a far more effective and healthier option is to see the exercise knowledge and practice itself as a problem: and one that can therefore be changed.

This doesn’t mean that exercise knowledge and practice is always a problem, only that at various times it can be. And if it’s going to make us feel bad and guilty—such as, “the only bad workout is the one you didn’t do”—then that is a serious problem because if you’re anything like me, feeling bad makes me less likely to do something I find hard, not more likely.

And so, while inspirational stories of astonishing levels of determination, drive and sacrifice are always nice to hear, let’s be realistic. If sticking to our exercise plans re-quires such huge levels of determination and account-ability then it probably isn’t something we should be doing anyway, as we’re not likely to ever enjoy it.

So, let’s remove these mental chains and Everest-climb-ing pressures we put ourselves under. As I hinted at in the last article, let’s re-think what exercise knowledge should be and what exercise practice can be. Let’s make it work for us, and not against or torture us in the pro-cess.

Christie Residents’ Association ReportThe Christie Residents’ Association will hold its An-nual General Meeting on Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. at the Strathcona Community Centre. Resi-dents of Christie Park pay a tax levy which is collected by the City of Calgary. The levy is used to enhance landscaping in Christie Park, including increased grass mowing, flower pot and flower bed planting and main-tenance, litter pick-up, and weeding. Also, ongoing dis-cussions with the City resulted in 30 new trees being planted and numerous dead or distressed trees being replaced. During the past 22 years, we contracted the City to conduct this additional work. In 2017, City Coun-cillors voted enhanced communities such as Christie Park will be responsible for hiring and overseeing work completed by private landscape companies in their own communities beginning in 2018. This responsibility will be assumed by volunteers on the Christie Residents’ As-sociation Board of Directors: Azad Chandler (President), Joan Sickel-Luciuk, Chris Wilks, Cameron Taylor, and Stu-art Turner. The Board’s goal is to continue to oversee the beautification of Christie Park with the current tax levy and a reduction in funding from the City. At the AGM on April 11, the present Board will address the changes and answer questions about in the implementation of the enhanced landscape program. All Christie Park resi-dents are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Frank and Renee were looking for a single-level bungalow versus their multi-level single-family home, in a “safe environment and close community”. They found it right in their own neighbourhood of Signal Hill at Morena West by Rockford Developments.

After researching many housing options, Frank and Renee purchased at Morena West not only for the “quality building materi-als, excellent standard finishing options, and functional floor plan layouts, but also because of strong builder references”.

For over 25 years, Rockford’s family based business has built over 3000 residential units, in over 30 separate developments. Their reputation stands as one of Western Canada’s leading condominium builders. At completion Morena West will contain 54 luxury bungalow villas. Prices start at $690,000 + GST, with walk-out and level lot options. Each villa has 1492 sqft of living space with 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and double attached front drive garages. Full basement development is optional and could provide up to 1158 sqft with 2 additional bedrooms, flex room, family room, and 1 full bath. Possessions range from immediate to 12 months.

Frank and Renee are looking forward to spending more personal time, now that they do not have to worry about exterior upkeep. They highly recom-mend the safe community of Morena West, without hesitation, to those who are considering their next move.

CALGARY WILDLIFE

See a Hare, Leave It There!Throughout the spring and summer many wild mothers will raise their

young in both rural and urban environments. It is im-portant to know when to intervene, and when the mother is just out of sight.

Hares are common throughout Calgary and Southern Alberta. They don’t construct nests for their young, but rather deposit the babies (called leverets) in protected areas like bushes and shrubs nearby. The leverets are born fully furred and with their eyes and ears open, unlike rabbits that are born naked, blind, and deaf. The mother tends to stay nearby but keeps her distance to avoid drawing predators to the leveret’s location, re-uniting with her young twice daily at dusk and dawn for feeding.

While usually well hidden, occasionally people stumble upon a lone baby hare. Leave the hare alone! It is more than likely not orphaned, but rather tucked away for the day. If the leveret is in a conspicuous location, it is okay to move it to a nearby bush or shrub. The moth-er and leveret will vocalize to each other. If the hare is under threat of attack from a crow or magpie, the best thing to do would be to shoo the birds away and place a cardboard box over the hare until the birds have lost interest and moved away. Be sure to remove the box by the evening to make sure it can be found by its mother in time to be fed. If the hare is injured in any way, con-tact a wildlife rehabilitator for advice. If the leveret has been attacked by a cat, it is important to intervene. Cats have bacteria on their teeth and claws can be deadly, and small puncture wounds can be difficult to see. It is always a good idea to contact a wildlife rehabilitation organization for advice.

When in doubt, call for help! Don’t accidentally kidnap a hare, they have a much better chance of survival with their mother! Please contact the Calgary Wildlife Reha-bilitation Society hotline at 403-239-2488 for tips, in-structions, and advice, or look at the website at www.calgarywildlife.org for more information.

Resident-Led Solutions There are many ways that neighbours can come togeth-er to build a sense of community and find ways to solve neighbourhood issues. Here are five things to consider when residents come together to create solutions:

1. Gathering Input from ResidentsResidents that live in their neighbourhood should a say in the solution – they are the local experts!

2. Residents Leading & InitiatingResidents should lead and initiative the solution, not an external group or program from outside the neighbourhood.

3. Outcome Benefits for the NeighbourhoodThe outcome of a resident-led solution should benefit the entire neighbourhood and residents.

4. Opportunity to ParticipateCreate a solution where all residents have an oppor-tunity to participate.

5. Gathering AssetsFind local assets from the neighbourhood! Assets can be any source that can lead to helping find a so-lution, such as other community leaders, organiza-tions, businesses, etc.

For more information on community building visit our website at calgarycommunities.com.

Ask Charles

REAL ESTATE COUNCIL OF ALBERTA

There was a major hail storm after a seller accepted my offer to purchase their home, and the house needs a new roof. Who is responsible for it?

Until the deal closes, and you take possession of the prop-erty, the seller is responsible for the property. Any damage to the property or to the items included in the sale are the sole responsibility of the seller until your purchase funds are transferred and you take possession of the home.

When you take possession, the property—and its inclu-sions (appliances, etc.)—should be in the same condition as when you viewed it and submitted your offer to purchase.

Even if the property is vacant, and has been for weeks, it is still the seller’s responsibility to maintain home insurance on the property.

As the buyer, you should make sure you arrange for your home insurance to begin on your possession day, even if you aren’t moving in right away. As soon as you take pos-session, insuring the property is your responsibility.

If something such as a hail storm damages the property in the time between the seller accepting your offer and pos-session day, have your agent talk to the seller’s agent to confirm the seller is handling the damage. If the seller con-firms they’re handling the repairs, you may wish to add an addendum to your accepted offer to purchase that outlines the seller’s responsibility to replace the roof prior to posses-sion day, or you may ask the seller to agree to you holding back a small portion of the purchase funds until the roof is repaired. Make sure any agreements between you and the seller are in writing.

If there is any resistance on the part of the seller, either to fixing the damage or to putting details and agreements in writing, you need to talk to a lawyer for legal advice.

Likewise, if either party wishes to end the transaction in light of the damage done to the property, or if the seller re-

fuses to repair the roof prior to possession, contact a lawyer for legal advice.

About Wineby Nik Rasula

About Wine features wines not typically on one’s shopping radar. Unique wines with a story to tell; of place, process or style. Highlighting artisanal producers making reasonably priced (under $50 retail) wines, all the while demonstrating careful earth consideration.

2014, Bodegas Vegalfaro, CAPRASIA Bobal Crianza, Utiel-Requena - Valencia, Spain (vegalfaro.com)

About the Region: Located 200km southeast of Madrid and 70km inland of the Mediterranean coastline, Utiel-Requena lies within the region of Valencia. Here it incurs both Continental and Mediterranean climactic influences. With winemaking anthropology dating to 7th C. B.C., Utiel-Requena is Spain’s oldest winemaking region.

About the Maker: Coming from a long-line of winemak-ers, Andrés Valiente, along with son Rodolfo, founded Bodegas Vegalfaro in 1999. After earning degrees in both Oenology and Law, Rodolfo now serves as Vegalfaro’s Technical Director.

In 2017, Rodolfo was named Valencia’s Winemaker of the Year.

About the Estate: The three Vegalfaro vineyards aver-age 700 m.a.s.l., each with distinct soil types ranging from gravel/chalk to clay/limestone. Average age of Vegalfaro’s low-yielding Bobal bush-vines is 55-years.

About Sustainability: Having never been exposed to synthetic treatments, the Vegalfaro soils thrive with micro-fauna and decomposing organic matter.

All their wines are certified organic.

About the Grape: Native to Valencia, Bobal is a late sprout-ing and late ripening red. Renowned for its fragrance, co-lour and tannin, it has adapted perfectly to the region’s climactic vagarities.

About the Wine: After ageing 14-months in European oak and five in clay amphorae, a wine that’s dark purple results. Aromatic notes of leather, spice box and dark fruits precede a medium-bodied palate of cinnamon and black-berry.

The finish is fresh and long.

About Pairing: Medium cheeses, roast lamb and seared tenderloin.

About Availability: Check liquorconnect.com (call the listed store too) confirming availability.

HOME GARDENING WITH BARBARA

By Barbara [email protected]

Tall Annuals

There isn’t always room in a garden to add more peren-nials, but something tall may be desired. What can you plant from seed or buy from the nursery that will add height for a single season?

Sweet peas have been in our prairie gardens for gen-erations. They come in many heights, colours, scents, blossom size, etc. so reading the seed package is a must. Sun-loving, and thirsty, they will reach up to 6 ft. in the right location. This plant will bloom and bloom for weeks as long as you cut the blossoms and take them in the house where they are most satisfying on the kitchen table. As soon as you allow them to set seed pods (they are, after all, peas) their job is done, and that is the end of the flowers. The seed can be planted directly into the garden in the spring, but you will get blooms earlier if you start them inside in April and transplant in May, es-pecially if Mother Nature decides to give us a cool wet spring and they find themselves with cold feet. They need something to climb on; netting is best. A tall tee-pee made of bamboo poles tied together at the top and wrapped with pea netting can be very pretty when covered with sweet peas. If your garden includes small children, leave an opening for them to crawl inside.

A similar trellis also works for climbing beans, the most dramatic being Scarlett Runner Beans. They like our summers so much you need really tall poles (one year in my garden they stretched from the top of their poles and into the overhanging crab-apple tree and must have reached 12 ft. before frost put an end to their ad-venture). Some years you get tasty beans, and some years you will have to be satisfied with the brilliant red blossoms. Other beans also climb; one of my favou-rites is the Italian Purple Bean, which always produces

masses of long tasty beans (sadly, they turn green when cooked, but are worthwhile, nonetheless).

Everyone who gardens in pots knows the Sweet Potato Vine, with its lime green or deep purple leaves. It doesn’t just cascade onto the patio stones, you know. If you give it a trellis to climb and spend a few minutes now and then to secure it, this is another one that will give inter-esting and beautiful height to a patio or deck. Further-more, it tolerates shade very nicely as well as poor soil.

Ipomoea purpurea or tricolor, Morning Glory Vine, on the other hand, expects to be fed regularly if she is to provide you with a profusion of bright blooms, a new one each day. These will provide pleasure for weeks in the right sunny location.

When I was in Costa Rica, I was blown over by the lush hedges and arbours covered entirely with Thungergia alata, Black-Eyed Susan Vine. The exact same plant here will climb or trail, depending upon what support you provide, and gives a pretty display from a pot on the deck. This one also is happy in a part shade location. An-nual here; perennial in Costa Rica.

Last of all, we can’t ignore the stately Sunflowers and Hollyhocks. The giant varieties grow very tall indeed and make a dramatic statement at the back of the gar-den or along a fence. From mid to late summer, these guys get taller and stronger, the sunflower also provid-ing seeds for birds and squirrels. My hollyhocks still had bright red blooms at the tip top of their stalks when our first snow fell last fall. Hollyhocks are biennial not an-nual, and bloom during their second year of life, so you need to start them off two years in a row. They self-seed readily and will look after that flower bed by them-selves after that.

The federal government released its 2018-2019 budget earlier this year. It could be argued that the most signifi-cant component of the government’s lofty ambitions is its complete abandonment of any remaining fiscal restraint or focus on the economy and, regarding the business community, it lacks new measures to make Canadian firms more competitive to counter tax reforms in the U.S.

In the three years since the current government came to power, we’ve watched as government expenditures have skyrocketed. With total spending in this year’s budget are more than $311 billion dollars and projected revenue of $293 billion leaves a deficit of over $17 bil-lion. That’s $58 billion more than the final year of the previous government—a 20 percent increase in just over two and a half years.

The government’s campaign commitment to balance the budget during its 4-year term will be impossible to be met as promised. The government is adding $17 bil-lion of new debt for future Canadians with yet another massive deficit. Department of Finance projections indi-cate that, based on current spending, the government will be unable to balance the budget until 2050—over 30 years from now.

It’s unlikely that members of our community will see any impact from all that deficit spending.

Agriculture only appears 16 times throughout the budget, and none of those examples commit tangible resources that will support farmers. In the case of NAFTA, the government has set aside virtually nothing for individuals who may lose employment as a result of that agreement’s renegotiation. In the case of energy infrastructure, this budget establishes new rules and regulations that will threaten countless natural resource projects with additional regulatory approval process-es—directly harming western and rural communities. And in the case of our men and women in uniform, there are vanishing few references and no new money.

After the government released the Strong, Secure and Engaged defence review last year, the Defence Depart-ment was all but omitted from the government’s focus in this year’s budget.

As the Member of Parliament for Calgary Signal Hill, I’m very concerned with how this government’s priorities seem to be out of sync from previous statements. When the government is borrowing from generations of Can-adians—and more specifically, Albertans—yet unborn, it’s reckless spending is foregoing needed investment.

I am always grateful to hear your feedback on Budget 2018 - 2019, or any other matter. Please feel free to call my office or email me at any time.

Hello, Ward 6!

What We’ve DoneOn February 20th, Council approved the West Springs Area Structure Plan amendment to accommodate the West District development. While the majority of the community is in favour of moving development for-ward, there remains a serious transportation infrastruc-ture deficit that affects all of Ward 6. I highlighted this need at Council and will work with my colleagues to see improvements to our road network in the area.

At the end of April, the Ward 6 Office will be completing a tour with the General Manager of Transportation and the Director of Roads to highlight and address the traffic and safety issues our communities face.

What We’re DoingPedestrian safety is a top concern for the Ward 6 Office. We’ve received many concerned emails and phone calls regarding pedestrian safety around schools. Our Office has met with Constables from the Calgary Police Service and we will be working with Council to find a city-wide solution to this issue.

What We’ll DoSave the date! On May 3rd, from 6:30-9:00 PM I will be hosting our first Ward 6 Open House at the Strathcona Community Association Hall (277 Strathcona Drive SW). Ward 6 Office Staff and I will be on hand to address any questions or concerns that you may have. Other attend-ees include representatives from Calgary Transporta-tion, Parks, Neighbourhoods, and the Calgary Police Service. We look forward to seeing you!

Follow us on our social media accounts and ensure you are up to date on all of our community events!

Spring is upon us, and I wanted to write to you with an update from the Alberta Legislature in Edmonton. The United Conservative Opposition has been very busy during the past sitting on a great number of files, a sum-mary of which is below:

•Alberta’s NDP government gets an “F” for red tape. Lacking any real strategy to help businesses and entre-preneurs, Alberta’s government recently was awarded the worst ranking in Canada for excessive red tape and regulation. In contrast, the province of Quebec got an “A”.

•Pushing for Trans Mountain. We have been work-ing with our federal colleagues in Ottawa to push the Prime Minister to act for the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion, which, as you know, continues to be held up by the BC NDP. We called actively for an emergency debate to be held in the Alberta legislature, similar to the ones being held in both the House of Commons and Senate in Ottawa. We also have been working to actively support Senator Doug Black’s bill which calls upon Government of Canada to invoke its Constitu-tional authority under s.91(29) and s.92(10)(c) to de-clare the much-needed Trans Mountain project to be in the national interest.

•End the Carbon Tax. We continue to work actively on the carbon tax file, particularly since newly released content suggests the federal government wants to re-quire provinces to increase the tax further (something Alberta’s NDP government has been very willing to do thus far). I encourage you to visit our website and sign our End the Carbon Tax petition.

As always, if you have comments about the above or other matters, I encourage you to get in touch with me at [email protected]. I appreciate hearing from you!

SCHOOL SHOUT-OUTS

Willow Park SchoolCBE school Willow Park Arts-Centred Learning school has been busy!

With our enthusiastic Leadership students, we held our open house in January. Many families came out and were treated to cookies, drama and dance performanc-es throughout the school.

Our first ever Family Game Night was a big hit. We wel-comed Dr. MathPickle (Gordon Hamilton), the creator of hit game Santorini, to share games and connect them to math with our families.

The drama department is preparing for its annual pro-duction. This year it is Happy Daze and all families are welcome to attend. For information on performance location and dates, please contact the school.

Congratulations to our Volleyball teams who won THREE Divisional Championships this year! Basketball is underway — GO WILD! Athletics is an important part of our program. Our junior and senior teams in volleyball, basketball, badminton, cross-country running and soc-cer compete within the Calgary Junior High Athletics Association.

Students are continuing to learn IN and THROUGH the arts. Our unique program offers many opportunities to reach beyond basic curricular expectation to engage: with art, art specialists, visiting artists, and field trips to Theatre Calgary, the Music Centre, band camps and dance studios, guest presentations for Black History month, and Crime Scene Investigation. Our studio artist, Mark Vazquez-Mackay, works with students in class, on a collaborative project, and students get an opportunity to share in the daily work of a living artist.

In May, grade 6 students will be heading to Kananaskis for the four-day outdoor school adventure — always a big hit with students.

Check out some of our student work on display at Wil-low Park Starbucks. This community connection puts our students in the spotlight.

iREALTY INNOVATIONS

As a proud resident of West Hills, I share with my sphere of influence how marvelous this neighbourhood is and how much it has to offer! The beautiful laughter, energetic cheering and tremendous joy we all see on the faces of people playing soccer, tennis, basketball and baseball in the parks. As well as the adorable ear-to-ear smiles on the children’s faces in the playgrounds. Furthermore, we’re so close to numerous reputable schools, Westside Recreation Centre, 69th C-Train Station, a wide selection of shopping, and the short commute to Downtown Calgary. What a lifestyle! Lucky us!
