E M O R Y LOSS is not an inevitable p a r t o f t h e aging process. What we know

about the brain and its func-tioning has increased dramati-cally in the last decade or so. Although many people fear developing memory loss as they grow older—or struggle with brain fog in middle age—sci-entists are now discovering that ancient techniques for keeping our minds free from stressors complement modern ways of preventing brain diseases.

Why do Native Americans have a much lower incidence of Alzheimer’s disease than

many other Americans? Their medicine men and women, or shamans, understood what Western medicine is just begin-ning to discover: that optimal brain health is achieved by elim-inating toxins from the body, eating well, fasting, getting movement, and using the tra-ditional practice of energy medicine.

There are several foods and supplements that foster brain health. A brain-healthy diet should be mostly plant-based and include good fats such as virgin olive oil, coconut oil, and fish oil from wild (not farmed) cold-water fish, such as salmon and sardines. Avoid dairy products and refined sugars. If you are gluten-intolerant or have celiac disease, avoid grains. Limit caffeine, sugars, and alcohol to reduce dependence on these stimulants. Avoid arti-ficial flavors and colors, as well as processed foods including hydrogenated oils. Consider taking food sup-plements that promote brain health: DHA, alpha-lipoic acid, pterostilbene, sulforaphane,

curcumin from turmeric extract (a spice used in curry), and green tea extract.

5 WAYS TO REPAIR YOUR BRAIN

Exercise in a non-stressful way that boosts your mood, which causes bio-chemical changes in the brain that lead to

optimal brain health. Walk, bike, or jog at least 20 minutes a day at a brisk pace and work

your way up to 45 minutes a day. In addition, practice yoga and stretch at least twice a week for 30 minutes a session.

Get eight hours sleep so your brain cells can repair themselves after the stress of the day.

Meditate regularly u s i n g w h a t e v e r practice feels right to you. Note that mindfulness medi-tation performed

just 30 minutes a day for eight weeks will develop the part of your brain associated with calmness, mental clarity, learning, and memory.

Fast at least once a month, with the permission of your physician, staying hydrated through-out the day. Fasting

increases the amount of brain-derived neurotropic factor (BDNF) your body produces for repairing any damage to brain cells.

Practice forgiveness. Don’t hold grudges or dwell on past injuries. Harbor positive thoughts and use them

to replace negative thoughts, which cause the brain to release stress hormones that harm brain cells over time.

Sit comfortably, focusing on your breath, as you inhale and exhale deeply and slowly. Bring into mind

the image of the person who harmed you; feel the anger as you take in one long breath. Now, for five long breaths, superim-pose the face of someone you love. Watch that face strengthen in clarity as the image of the one who hurt you fades away. Feel the emotions of love and clarity. Repeat often to clear your LEF of dark, heavy energy.

S OUR HEALTH not tied to thoughts of well-being? If the world is only a thought, then of course everything in it

is also just a thought, including my body. If my body is only a coming together of thought, of some type of energy, then that energy can be controlled by my mind here—or it can be let go from what I thought of as my mind and essentially be led instead by the Mind, the Holy Spirit, or the combined One I know I am a part of. My mind here had been my

whole experience here, and my mind held a belief system that told me the world is real and that I could be affected by all the happenstance and insanity of it. If I believed in this world, I believed I could die. If I con-tinued to hold that belief, events of the world would control me, therefore, I would have no control over whether I was sick or healthy. I had thoughts that, because a family member had a certain ailment at a certain age, then I could eventually have the same ailment, or that I was at the whim of disease that could strike at any time and I would be powerless to prevent or do anything about it. None of that could be true.

My body is an energy that a thought had created, and con-versely, a thought can direct, lead or change, in any way. My body is only a vehicle to change my thinking. The plan now was for the body I was in to serve its purpose and get me Home by giving me time, as I perceived it, to get there. Also, by knowing I was already Home because of the non-linear reality of time, I can let the true purpose of my body fulfill itself in complete health. My body’s purpose will be shown to me by something outside of myself: My Helper, the Holy Spirit. The only block to letting all these things occur in my life is
