First Reports First Presbyterian Church Evansville, Indiana www.firstpresevansville.com MAY 2017 You would think I’d be over it by now. After 20 springs in Evansville, you’d think that the sight of dogwood, azaleas, rhododendrons, and all the flowering trees and bushes would have lost their luster. I mean, they’re just trees and bushes and that’s what they do in the spring. Then the flowers fade and drop off and the leaves take over, until they fall off in the fall, making it through winter with bare branches or curled leaves. And then, next spring, they’re back. Of course, the spring brings a hastening pace to life. We get busy and then busier. We get distracted and preoccupied. We lose focus on what’s right in front of us. Like the beauty of the trees and bushes. And if you can miss the beauty of the trees and bushes, it’s a pretty sure thing that you’ll miss the presence of God and the wonder it brings. Stay focused. Brahms Requiem in Concert – May 21

3

On Sunday, May 21 at 4:00 p.m., The Choir School presents Johannes Brahms’ Requiem in concert. The choir has sung movements of this great choral masterpiece in Worship over the last few months, and will now present them in a single performance. Officially Ein Deutches Requiem, or A German Requiem, our performance is a beautiful translation by Dr. Leonard Van Camp (1934-2003) who dedicated his professional life to excellent choral music, scholarship, and providing modern English translations to German masterpieces. Brahms himself said, ”I will admit that I could happily omit ‘German’ and simply say ‘Human.’”

The thrust of the texts chosen by Brahms was to comfort the living – those who had lost loved ones – rather than commemorating the lives or praying for the souls of those who had died.

The Choir will be accompanied by the unusual combination of two pianos and organ, played by students from the IU Jacobs School of Music. The Choir will be augmented to sing this very challenging piece with members of our local community. Brahms himself said it was “rather difficult,” and acknowledging his observation, we will not sing the sixth movement. Be sure to invite a friend to hear this nineteenth century masterpiece sung in our beautiful space.

“For All the Saints”

In the month of May, we will give thanks to God for and remember the lives of two very important people in the life of First Presbyterian Church. A memorial service and concert will be held on Saturday, May 20, for Helen Reed, who died on March 19, as the result of a fall. Helen’s contributions to our congregation were so many that we cannot begin to measure her loss. The memorial service will being at 4:00 p.m. and the concert will begin at 4:30 p.m.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 28, for B.C. (Bung-Chung) Lee, who died at age 89, on March 29. B.C. was a long-time member of First Pres, a retired professor of engineering at the University of Evansville, and a dear friend and mentor to so very many. B.C.’s family will host the Fellowship Hour following worship. The memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m..

We Presbyterians are bold to make the claim, “In life and in death, we belong to God.” These two faithful people now know that to be absolutely true. We give thanks for their witness, their faithfulness, and their example. May their memories continue to bless and inspire us.

An adult pilgrimage to sites in Great Britain, connected to our Presbyterian and Christian traditions, is being planned for August 1-13, 2018. The pilgrimage will include stops in Coventry, Stratford-Upon-Avon, Oban, Iona, Edinburgh, York, and London. An evening to share information is scheduled for Monday, May 15, 2017, at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel. All those who are interested - whether they are members of First Pres or not - are invited to join us. Kevin will have brochures and details available. Seeing the places where our faith began can help bring our faith to life in new ways. We hope to see you on the evening of May 15, 2017, at 7:00 p.m.

The Presbyterian Bible Study Series will have its concluding session on Wednesday, May 5. The theme will be Who Is Jesus...According to Contemporary Cultural Interpretations? The class will meet from 12:30 to about 1:30 p.m. in Kerr Chapel and consider what we might learn about Jesus from points of view like Liberation Theology, Feminist Theology, and Womanist Theology. No preparation is required (but you could re-read the stories in Matthew 15:21-28 and Luke 10:38-42 if you like), and you’re welcome to come even if you’re new to the group or haven’t come in a while.

Information Evening for British Pilgrimage

“The trees are coming into leaf Like something almost being said; The recent buds relax and spread, Their greenness is a kind of grief. Is it that they are born again And we grow old? No, they die too, Their yearly trick of looking new Is written down in rings of grain. Yet still the unresting castles thresh In fullgrown thickness every May. Last year is dead, they seem to say, Begin afresh, afresh, afresh.”

- Philip Larkin, The Trees
