d. MASSEY UNIVERSITY of New Zealand, a body corporate that is a University

established under the Education Act 1989 (“Massey”)

e. Massey and KDU wish to provide their students with a programme of study

which equates to two years of study at KDU and two years of study at Massey

University.

f. The pathway program will be conducted as a separate degree program. Hence

changes in the KDU and Massey Program will not affect the KDU normal degree

program.

2. Entry standards

The minimum requirements to enter into the Massey University Engineering Pathway

Programme at KDU are as follows:

a. Fulfilled the minimum eligibility requirements for university admission as

published by the UGC and KDU enlistment criterion common to all engineering degree

programs

b. Those applying with foreign qualifications equivalent to GCE (A/L)

examination of Sri Lanka need to prove the acceptability by the department of

examination/ UGC of Sri Lanka.

3. Selection and conduct of Massey University Pathway Programme

a. Intake to the faculty of Engineering is selected by the KDU, subject to the

minimum requirements stipulated by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and

entry qualification for Faculty of Engineering.

b. On completion of their familiarization course soon after their enlistment, all

students to follow a common programme in Semester one during their first year.

c. Students are selected for specialization depending on the preferences and their

performance in the first semester. To enter the Massey University program, students

those who have obtained a B+ grade or above for the modules considered for field

selection, will be informed to indicate their willingness for selecting Massey University

pathway program. The grading criteria at KDU is depicted in Table 1 below.

d. Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Electrical,

Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering will induct students for all their

respective degree programs in line with staff: student ratio defined by the Institution of

Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL).

e. Upon enrolment at Massey the KDU Students will be Students of Massey in the

Massey Programme. KDU Students who are successful in enrolling at Massey must be

informed that they will be studying at Massey in the Massey Programme. Thus, an

agreement will be signed with the students once they select the program.

f. Students are required to undertake subjects as per the curriculum attached in

annexure A (which subjected to change as per Massey requirements). In addition,

students have to maintain YGPA of 3.3 (B+ pass - 65%) during first 2 years at KDU.

Students will be eligible to graduate with a Massey Bachelor of Engineering (Hons)

qualification in their respective major.

Year Grade Point Average (YGPA)

The Year Grade Point Average (YGPA) is the Cumulative GPA for a year, and

ascertains the performance of a student and whether the student can proceed to the

following year. It is calculated on a weighted basis as follows:

YGPA = ∑ [Grade Point scored for Course Unit × Credit value of Course Unit]

Cumulative credit value of all GPA Course Units of the Year

Note : The GPA is the credit weighted average of the grade points of value of all Course

Units except NGPA Course Units taken in the degree programme

g. KDU students will be required to satisfy the requirements for a New Zealand

student visa before being admitted to the Massey Programme in New Zealand.

Eligibility, including eligibility on health grounds, will be checked at the time students

are admitted to Massey. Massey University makes no guarantees in respect of and

cannot influence in any way the provision or not of a student visa.

h. Before being admitted to the Massey Programme, students will be

required to achieve English language scores of Academic IELTS 6.0 with all sub-scores

at 5.5 or better; or the equivalent TOEFL score. There are two options for Students who

have not achieved IELTS 6.0:

(1). Should a student achieve IELTS 5.5 overall, then the student has the

option to attend the 10-week English for Academic Purposes (EAP 2)

programme online or on the Auckland campus of Massey in New Zealand, at

their own cost, in order to achieve the required English language entry standard

for the Massey Programme. Students who have passed all the courses to an

agreed-upon level will be admitted into the Massey Programme, without taking

IELTS again.

(2). Should a student achieve IELTS 5.0 overall, then the student has the

option to attend the 20-week English for Academic Purposes (EAP 1 and 2)

programme online or on the Auckland campus of Massey in New Zealand, at

their own cost, in order to achieve the required English language entry standard

for the Massey Programme. Students who have passed all the courses to an

agreed-upon level will be admitted into the Massey Programme, without taking

IELTS again.

i. Students who complete the Massey Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) with high

grades (B and above) will be eligible to continue their studies at Massey towards a

Master of Engineering degree. The Master of Engineering is a 1-year (120 credit)

research Master’s. Students will be able to complete the Master’s degree in the 5th year

(10th semester).

4. Programme Structure for the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) majoring in

Electronics and Computer Engineering or Mechatronics [2+2]

KDU PROGRAMME

a. On successfully completing the first two years of the KDU Programme, Massey

University will recognize 240 credits of prior recognized learning towards the 480 credit

Bachelor of Engineering (Hons).

b. Students must achieve an IELTS score of 6.0 (sub-minima 5.5 in each band) or

equivalent, and a minimum YGPA of 3.3 (B+, 65%), during the first two years of study

at KDU to be eligible to join the Massey Programme in the first semester of year 3. These

Students will commence their study in the month of February.

MASSEY PROGRAMME

a. During the next two years at Massey, students will study the following schedule

of compulsory and elective courses towards a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons). The Table

2 and Table 3 below shows the distribution of the full-time study load of 60 credits each

semester, totaling 240 credits for the respective degree programs at Massey.

b. This schedule is subject to change due to the availability of Course offerings in

each Massey Academic Year. Written notice of any changes will be given prior to

enrolment of Students.

c. Upon completion of these Courses, Students will be eligible to graduate with a

Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in their respective major from Massey, accredited by

Engineering New Zealand at Washington Accord level. The total length of study of the

KDU Programme and the Massey Programme is 4 years (eight semesters).

d. On the final transcript from Massey, the KDU Programme will be listed as

Recognised Prior Learning completed by the KDU Student totaling 240 credits. Massey

will provide KDU with the official transcripts of the students who have completed the

Massey Programme.

5. The structure and admission of both the KDU Programme and Massey Programme may

subject to change. Massey reserves the right to change the Massey Programme regulations and

associated schedules of courses as it deems necessary, this may require changes to the KDU-

Massey degree Programme.

6. The students who could not complete the requirements to continue to Massey university

programme after conducting two years at KDU will be allowed to join the relevant KDU

normal degree programme. The point of commencement of this program will be Semester 5.

The students who have taken additional modules (required by Massey) by dropping KDU

modules during the first two years will be able to complete the modules in the latter semesters,

once they join the KDU program. Details are attached at Annexure B.

7. For students who are continuing with KDU program, the credits earned by completing

additional subjects (which were required for the pathway program) during the first 4 semesters

will not be considered for final GPA calculation. Additional subjects will be included in the

transcript as optional subjects.

8. Students who were unable to transfer to Massey University due to a valid reason, will

be given an extension of one year to complete the requirements, subjected to senate approval.

In such a case, student can transfer to Massey University with the successive intake. The

student will be given not more than one year of extension after a case-by-case approval.

9. Payment and Costs

a. Students will pay any Tuition Fees and Non-Tuition Fees and other costs

associated with their respective studies, both while studying at KDU and Massey,

directly to the University they are enrolled in and as determined by the University they

are enrolled at according to their standard regulations, approvals and procedures.

b. Massey agrees to give suitable Fee reduction upon confirmation of number of

students.

c. For the purpose of clarity, no discounts will be applied towards any fees or other

costs associated with the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programme or any

other programme at Massey not included in this Agreement.

10. Since the commencement of the program is from the year 2022 onwards, the students

who have enrolled earlier to the KDU normal degree programs could forward individual

requests for consideration to enter into Massey program. Final approval granting authority will

be the Senate.

11. For both pathway degree programs, the first two years will be governed by existing

KDU regulations in addition to the criteria mentioned in this document.
