October 18th is the Feast of St. Luke the Evangelist. Luke wrote the Gospel that has his name and he wrote the book of the Acts of the Apostles. He is also known as “the beloved physician” title given to him by St. Paul the apostle.

He was born a Greek and a Gentile. That is probably why in his gospel shows special sensitivity to evangelizing the Gen-tiles. It is only in his gospel that we find the parable of the Good Samaritan, that we find Jesus praising the faith of Gentiles such as the widow of Zerephath and Naaman the Syrian and that we find the story of the one grateful leper who is a Samaritan.

Luke joined St. Paul in one of his journeys spreading the Good News and he was his loyal comrade who stays with him when he was imprisoned in Rome. When all the other companions of St. Paul deserted him in his final imprisonment and sufferings, it is only Luke who remains with Paul to the end. That is why Paul wrote in his 2nd Letter to Timothy 4:11 “Only Luke is with me”.

St. Luke the Evangelist is the patron of Physicians and Sur-geons so if you know any pray for them that St Luke intercede for them and bless their work. Moreover, if you know some-body who will go through a surgery pray to St Luke to direct the hands of the surgeons. He is often shown with an ox or a calf because these are the symbols of sacrifice; the sacrifice Jesus made for all of us. El 18 de octubre es la Festividad de San Lucas el Evangelista. Lucas escribió el Evangelio que tiene su nombre y escribió el

Apóstol.

El era griego de nacimiento y era un Gentil. Tal vez es por eso que en su evangelio muestra una sensibilidad especial para evangelizar a los Gentiles. Solamente en su evangelio es que encontramos la parábola del Buen Samaritano, que encontra-mos a Jesús elogiando la fe de los Gentiles tales como la viuda de Sarepta y Naamán el Sirio y que encontramos la historia del leproso agradecido quien es un samaritano.

Lucas acompañó a San Pablo en uno de sus viajes propagando las Buenas Nuevas y él fue su leal camarada quien se queda con él cuando fue encarcelado en Roma. Cuando todos los otros compañeros de San Pablo lo abandonaron en su encarce-lamiento permanece con Pablo hasta el final. Por esa razón, Pablo escri- bió en su 2a. Carta a Timoteo 4:11 “Sólo Lucas está conmigo.”

San Lucas el Evangelista es el patrón de los Médicos y de los Cirujanos, así que si usted conoce a alguno, ore por ellos para que San Lucas interceda por ellos y bendiga su trabajo. Además, si usted conoce a alguien a quien le van a hacer una cirugía, rece a San Lucas para que dirija las manos de los ciru-janos. Frecuentemente se le muestra con un buey o un becerro porque estos son los símbolos del sacrificio; el sacrificio que Jesús hizo por todos nosotros. El lugar de la pintura redonda de San Lucas es en el lado Oeste, arriba del vitral más grande #4 después del vestíbulo. También hay un vitral de San Lucas tomando dictado de San Pablo, lado Oeste #1 después del vestíbulo.

for Domestic Violence Victims

Loving God and Creator of the universe, there are homes in our world where people live with fear of violence. For these families, home is not a safe place, but a place of danger and pain.

Give them the strength and the wisdom they need to over-come the fear and division. Give them the grace to resolve conflicts without violence and to establish relations based on the spirit of love and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ.

God of Mercy, many have turned their backs on the battered people. Open our hearts to the pain of those who suffer. Help us reach them with love and understanding.

God of hope, in you we trust by opening our lives to your strength, your healing and your love. Teach us that peace will only come to our world, through the peace in our hearts and in our homes.

Oración por las Víctimas de Violencia Doméstica

Dios de amor y Creador del universo, existen hogares en nuestro mundo donde las personas viven con temor a la violencia. Para estas familias el hogar no es un lugar seguro, sino un lugar de peligro y dolor.

Dales la fuerza y la sabiduría para vencer el temor y la división. Dales la gracia para resolver los conflictos sin violencia y para establecer relaciones basadas en el espíritu de amor y paz de nuestro Señor Jesucristo.

Dios de Misericordia, muchos les hemos dado la espalda a las personas abusadas. Abre nuestros corazones al dolor de los que sufren. Ayúdanos a llegar a ellos con amor y comprensión.

Dios de esperanza, en ti confiamos abriendo nuestras vidas a tu fortaleza, tu sanación y tu amor. Enséñanos que la paz sólo llegará a nuestro mundo, por medio de la paz en nuestros corazones y en nuestros hogares.

Everything Belongs To God The first reading from the prophet Isaiah concerns the Persian King Cyrus, called the Lord’s “anointed.” Cyrus deserves this title because he ended the Babylonian captivity of the Jews. However, Isaiah reminds us that it was God who gave Cyrus his power. He may be a great king, but “I am the LORD and there is no other,” says God (Isaiah 45:5).

Today’s Gospel is also concerned with worldly power. In the passage from Matthew, the Pharisees try to trick Jesus into speaking against the emperor. His famous answer is the perfect reply. Like the kings of old, Caesar can be given the respect due his position, but everything belongs to God.

In the second reading, Paul gives thanks for all who are faithful to Jesus Christ and his gospel. He, too, reminds us that our call and the power to be faithful come from God. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Todo Pertenece A Dios La primera lectura del profeta Isaías tiene que ver con el rey persa Ciro, al que Dios llama “elegido”. Ciro merece este título ya que acabó con la cautividad de los judíos en Babilonia. No obstante, Jesús nos recuerda que fue Dios quien dio a Ciro su poder. Quizás sea un gran rey pero, “Yo soy el Señor, y no hay otro igual”, Dios dice (Isaías 45:5).

El Evangelio de hoy también está relacionado con el poder mundano. En el pasaje de Mateo vemos como los fariseos intentan con artimañas que Jesús hable mal del emperador. Su conocida respuesta es la perfecta réplica. Al igual que los reyes de la antigüedad, el César debe ser res-petado dada su posición pero todo pertenece a Dios.

En la segunda lectura, Pablo da las gracias por todos los que son fieles a Jesucristo y su Evangelio. También él nos recuerda que nuestra llamada y el poder de ser fieles provienen de Dios. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
