FAIR THEE WELLOyster shuckingGuitar pluckingA prize hen cluckingSounds like the Ag Society Fair to me.
Giant eggplantsA spontaneous danceA thoroughbred’s pranceOur annual community celebration of the Vineyard is upon us.
Huge horses pulling great weightsSummertime datesOverflowing lunch platesThe Fair brings the Island back to its earlier times.
The year’s best blueberry sconeGorgeous needlework being shownIron skillets being thrownWe recall what has always made the Vineyard unique.
Kids chortling on a merry-go-roundThe old fellow just sitting there looking aroundThe tearful tyke at lost and foundThe essential Vineyard is still the farm and the sea.
Laura’s “Day at the Beach” won a prizeDid you ever see a watermelon that size?Did you ever look into an alpaca’s eyes? The Fair is the magic of many moments and many modes.
Just look at that bonsai! The beauty of some of the art can make you cryDo you want that barbecue wet or dry?The Fair is the Vineyard beyond mega-homes and famous names.
The young volunteers working with zestWhich ox team was the best? That rider and her horse are truly blessedThe Fair is a cherished tradition of timeless traditions.
At the close, Taps is playedThe work of a year has been displayedAll who labored get an A+ gradeThe bonds of a community are strengthened by events such as this.
Jerry Muskin August 3, 2010
This poem is dedicated to those who, year after year, make the Fair what it is....great.
