MARKETING MOTION PICTURES:RESEARCH

METHODS OF MARKETINGMovies are often always marketed to convince the target audience to view the movie. Marketing means the action or business of promoting and selling products or services. For instance, advertising is a type of marketing since the creators aim is to advertise the movie they have made to convince people to watch it. An example of this would be using film posters on buses, bus stops or billboards to promote the movie.

Branding is also another marketing method to make the movie recognisable by having a logo or a symbol. An example of this would be with Jurassic Park. They have used the iconic skeleton of a dinosaur to label and brand their movie. These are then placed on products and merchandise which is another way to market in the filming industry.

FILM NOIR POSTER ANALYSIS

This Gun For Hire is a Film Noir film from 1942. Unlike the rest of the movie, the colours used on the poster are eye-catching, bright and bold. Much of everything in this time was black and white including the technology and editing, therefore using vibrant posters was a different way of portraying the movie and it would attract the audience. There is lots of the red used for the font of each title. Red was key iconography

used, especially on the Femme Fatale lips. The red is very symbolic to perhaps represent danger as well as love. We can try to incorporate this within our advertising. The two main characters are displayed on the poster and this highlights their importance to the production. This shows us that these characters have great significance in the storyline. Finally, the image appears to be quite cartoony which was a key conventions of displaying film noir as it contrasts against the movie effects and content of crime and monochrome.

PHOTO SHOOT FOR POSTERSThe photos below show different methods of creating marketing, a photo shoot is an example of this. When creating movies, you should try to include shots of the characters and props as inspiration for movie posters and other advertisement methods. All of these posters represent the majority of the Mise En Scene. The costume and characters are key conventions of Film Noir which should be included in advertising since our main aim is to portray and convey the genre, Film Noir.

WEBSITESWebsites are a very clever way of enhancing media. We have decided to use this as our main marketing campaign since we are trying to bring back the genre of Film Noir. Lots of websites use related aspects to their movie. For instance, the Jurassic World website below incorporates lots of its Mise En Scene, Lighting and identity on the page. We have used this as a website inspiration to incorporate several features into our own website such as using the old style telephone as the website header and most importantly, the black and white theme.

SOCIAL MEDIAFinally, to make our advertising have more of a modern twist, social media is another way to widen our marketing campaign. As you can see, the Jurassic World website uses a range of symbols which represent social network sites. The letter “F” being Facebook for instance and the “Camera” represents Instagram. Here we have used another inspiration from the Jurassic World to incorporate into our marketing. Giving people to ability to interact with movies via social media really brings it into the 21st century as social media is international and worldwide. It’s a huge method of marketing which many people use in this era to promote themselves in every location known in the world.

This is a preview page of our website and how we have used social media as an example of marketing. Similarly to the Jurassic World website, there are symbols located at the bottom of the page allowing users to visit pages where news, updates and images are shared across the world. Some countries may have trouble accessing websites and not everybody has a computer or laptop at home. Therefore using Social Networking sites to advertise and promote enables everybody to access all of the movie details.

INTERVIEWSFinally, another popular method of attracting audiences to watch a major motion picture is to interview stars or directors. Certain audiences will only go and watch a film if a particular star is featured in the film, therefore somebody asking questions about the production to an actor may convince people to come and watch the movie. Examples of interviewing include TV programmes such as “The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon” in which Fallon himself discusses onscreen pro’s and con’s with some of the biggest A Lister Hollywood actors. Another example where interviews are included would be on “Sky Movie” channels when they release a “Special” to an upcoming film. These would included actor interviews as well as snippets from the movie itself .

We decided to combine both these inspirations together to produce our interviews. Using the “Film4” logo in the corner of our interviews, we recorded the actor playing Lana Lombard and the Director discussing some of the questions asked by the interviewer. The title of the movie has also been included to remind users what the movie is being released. Interviewing is also very relaxed so it can bring out the personalities of actors which audiences will find satisfying. This will further persuade people to watch our movie.
