VOL. 33 NO. 8 www.seabreezecommunications.com AUGUST 2018 President’s Message Mark Your Calendar If you support deed restrictions in Whiskey Creek, you need to step up and volunteer now. We have a small window of opportunity to reinstate deed restrictions for most units that closes Jan. 1, 2020. When I was in preschool, we put on a little play called The Little Red Hen. (For the record, I was a chicken.) For those who may not have read the story lately, it is about a little red hen who wanted to bake some bread. She asked her fellow farm animals to help with various stages of the effort to bake the bread from planting the seed to kneading the dough. They kept turning her down. Each time she would reply, “Then I’ll do it myself.” I’d like to fully apply this story to the reinstatement of deed restrictions in the 15 units in Whiskey Creek, but we do not have a little red hen that will do it herself. The Whiskey Creek Civic Association can help with the logistics of getting the units reinstated, but it will be the people who live in each unit that will need to step up. Some of you have volunteered already. Thank you, we’ll be in touch. Many of you attended the neighborhood meeting on June 14. Thank you. We need at least four volunteers (from three different households) minimum for each unit to act as the Organizing Committee. Additional volunteers will just make it easier and faster – the old adage, “many hands make light work.” If you want to volunteer or have questions or comments, please send them to [email protected]. For those of you who were unable to attend the June 14 meeting, there is an explanation on the Whiskeycreeknews. net website that outlines what the WCCA has done, what the units must do to reinstate their deed restrictions, what the WCCA will do to help, and the deadlines. Know your unit. Go to http://www.whiskeycreeknews.net/deed-restrictions. htm or look at your legal description on your deed. Always remember that the law allows the units to either leave the deed restrictions as they are or to modify them by making them less restrictive. Reminder: We have a deadline of Jan. 1, 2020 to complete an extensive process for most units. There is no time to lose. Be part of keeping Whiskey Creek the special place that people in the past made it for you. Reminder, the next civic association meeting is on Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. at the Whiskey Creek Country Club. Kate Gooderham, APR, CPRC Gooderham & Associates, Inc. (239) 489-2616 School Starts Soon For many of us, the first day of school was after Labor Day. That’s not true in Lee County. Here the first day of school is Friday, Aug. 10. So, we’re going to have lots of kids out waiting for buses in the morning after a two-month break. The high schools start at 7:05 a.m., Tanglewood Elementary begins at 7:55 a.m., and the middle schools start at 9:45 a.m. With sunrise at 6:56 a.m., the high school students will be waiting for the bus in the dark. And, it’s not just the kids. Many parents who drive their kids to school are very responsible, but like anything, there are always a few trying to do too many things at a time (like driving, managing kids, drinking coffee and talking on the phone). So, those of us who are driving, bicycling or walking in the time period when the buses are picking up kids, need to Whiskey Creek Civic Association pay special attention. Reynard seems to be a favorite route to Tanglewood Elementary. Lots of kids wait for the bus on Whiskey Creek Drive. We need to be sure to drive the speed limit or slower and watch the kids carefully. We need to keep an eye out to be sure all is well. Our community is becoming younger with more people with kids moving in. That helps keep us dynamic. But, it also gives us the responsibility to be sure all our Whiskey Creek kids are safe as they wait for the bus, or walk or ride their bikes to school. Hurricane Season Gears Up Although I’m writing this well before you see it, but usually June and July are the quietest parts of hurricane season. For those of us who have lived here 25 years or more, we remember the August storm to end all storms – Hurricane Andrew. It was a category 5 storm that ravaged south Miami. It was also one of those storms that blew up into a category 5 rather quickly. So, it is time to quit procrastinating. Have you developed your plan? Go to http://www.leegov. com/publicsafety/emergencymanagement/plan and find a plan that you can personalize. Be sure that you have food and water and other supplies on hand to last you at least 72 hours. Remember that if you wait until the last minute, store shelves will be empty and lines will be long. Also, do you have a neighbor who is new to Florida, is elderly or has a disability? Be sure to check on them and see if they are prepared as well. Florida is the most prepared state in the nation in planning for hurricanes, but we each need to do our part. Preparedness can save each of us a lot of misery. Thursday, Aug. 2 The Continental Women’s Club will have guest speaker, Mark Tesoro, injury prevention educator/analyst with Lee Health Trauma Center. Mark’s program will be on balance, fall and injury prevention. Luncheon is at 11:30 a.m. at the Hideaway Country Club. Call (239) 691-7561 for reservations. Monday, Aug. 13 Lee Republican Women Federated will hold their dinner meeting at Pinchers – The Marina at Edison Ford at 5:15 p.m. The speakers will be Heather Fitzenhagen, Linda Doggett, Amira Fox, Ruth Rodrigues and Kathy Smith. R.S.V.P. to Wren Morefield at (270) 210-1284 before Aug. 9 at noon. Tuesday, Aug. 21 Fort Myers Republican Women’s Club will hold their luncheon at The Helm Club, The Landings starting at 11:15 a.m. Congressman Francis Rooney will be the featured speaker. Reservations required by Thursday, Aug. 16. Call Tina Laurie at 489-4701 to make your reservation. Whiskey Creek Civic Association will not meet again until September. Walk On The Left Not long ago a neighbor, with his dog, and I were walking in the same direction on one of our Whiskey Creek streets. His dog was doing some dog business and I caught up to them. I asked, “Where did you learn we should walk on the left side of the street facing oncoming traffic (as we were doing)?” Neither of us could remember for sure where, but we concluded it must have been when we were in Boy Scouts. Not having sidewalks in our subdivision those of us who walk or run are forced to do so in the streets, and passing vehicular traffic comes close to us, sometimes very uncomfortably close. Why should we walk facing oncoming traffic? One reason is, that’s the law in Florida (Section 316.130(4)! Perhaps they should, but sheriff’s deputies are not likely to give citations to “persons afoot” for walking or running on the wrong side, so there needs to be a better reason, and there is! Potentially saving your life! If you walk on the right side of the street, with the flow of traffic, you only have your ears to know of an approaching vehicle. On the left, though, you have your eyes as well, and I’ll take any advantage I can, especially knowing when I should jump into a yard if necessary. Unfortunately, drivers can be, and sometimes are, distracted or even blinded when facing the sun. For another reason, dog owners would likely appreciate the consistency of walking on the left, so as to avoid “head-on” confrontations between their animals. Many walkers and runners seem oblivious to the law and to common sense. If you’re with others, make sure they walk or run on the left. Perhaps you could even point out politely and tactfully to those on the “wrong” side the reason for the law. This doesn’t even get to protections one should take after dark with reflective clothing and/or lights. Dennis Rodgers, Vice president, Civic Association Security Update By Carl Schnurbusch In the month of June, the sheriff issued 13 citations for stop sign violations and two citations for speeding. There were seven warnings for stop sign violations and one citation for no seat belt. There were two citations, an arrest warrant and one citation for drugs found in a vehicle. There were three calls for assistance, one call for a suspicious person, three 911 hang ups, three calls for home alarms, one call for medical assistance and one call for a fire. Keep those vehicles locked when left outside and the garage doors closed. If you see something say something and call the sheriff at 477-1000.

We moved to Whiskey Creek in the fall of 2012 from Columbus, Ohio. When we bought our house, it came with what we called, the “jungle effect” which meant lots of overgrown plants and shrubs and trees. We ripped out mostly everything other than the trees and started over adding plants and shrubs that are easily maintained and created an open feel, giving the house visibility from the street. Since the mulch fades so quickly, we decided to landscape with river rock in both our front and back yards to add color and texture, saving the need to continually replace the mulch. It was an investment, but well worth it. We also added landscaping lights and uplighting to accent the landscaping at night. We love color and textures and added plants that bloom during the majority of the year and balanced that with evergreens such as a gardenia tree, foxtail ferns and other greenery. We also tried to keep things low maintenance. Since we are dog and animal lovers, we were also mindful to choose plants that are not

Cook’s CornerBy Debbie Lamach I originally found a recipe in Cooking Lite for Garlic-Miso Pork Noodle Bowl which intrigued me. Although I didn’t have miso, I made the suggested substitute of 2/3 soy sauce to 1/3 sesame oil for the miso. I must say the result was rather disappointing. It looked good in the photo so I was determined to try it again with variations.Garlic-Miso Beef Noodle Bowl2 ounces uncooked brown rice noodles (for two servings)8 ounces hamburger3 tablespoons chopped onion1 or 2 garlic cloves, minced4 ounces mushrooms, sliced2 tablespoons white miso1 tablespoon chili garlic sauce2 cups unsalted beef stock1 cup matchstick-cut carrotsFor Garnish:Soy sauceChopped cilantroTwo or three green onions, sliced Add noodles to boiling water and cook for three to fourminutes.Drainwellandsetaside. Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium high heat. Add beef, garlic, onion and mushrooms. Cook until beef is cooked through and mushrooms are tender. Stir in miso, chili garlic sauce, stock and carrots. Bring to a boil and cook until the carrots are crisp tender. The miso that I used was “mellow white” and since I’ve not had any experience with miso before (other than miso soup at Chinese buffets) I have no way to compare it; however, the substitute for miso suggested above just didn’tdothetrick.TherecipeIfirsttriedwouldhavebeen improved to my taste if minced garlic was sautéed along with the pork and onion.

Did You Know? The Whiskey Creek News is now on our website.

Unit 7 We have three volunteers for the Organizing Committee in Unit 7, including Bob Oxnard. One of them has created a website for their unit effort. Although he is sending a letter to each owner in Unit 7, he has asked to put a simple announcement about the website in the Whiskey Creek newspaper. Take a look at u7wcdr.com. It may be we will eventually want to have a column in the paper for events and news concerning the various unit efforts. Probably the more exposure we can get for the revitalization effort, the better.

By Bernie Lamach You will have noticed recent work being done on our canals, particularly the Sautern canal and the golf course canal perpendicular to Reynard. A little history is in order as disruption of the drainage system has initiated the work which was long overdue. When the U.S. Government was attracting development of the open lands after the Seminoles had left, they applied the purchase money to a fund for development and construction of a series of canals to drain the otherwise swampy land for agricultural or home building. These canals were surveyed and construction began on dedicated channels that crisscrossed the area and then drained in the creeks and rivers, such as Whiskey Creek. When home developers (such as U.S. Homes) started out to plat homesites, they sometimes realized that some parcelswerebelowsuggestedfloodlevels.Inourarea, theycontracted to excavate an area adjacent to some homesites andWhiskeyCreektoobtainthenecessaryfill.Thisareaintersected the east-west canal that dropped into Whiskey

Creek. As Whiskey Creek is part of the estuary system (tidal; therefore, salty water) they were required to build two dams orweirstopreventbackflowintowhatbecamearetentionpond. This pond is now called Lake Champagne. Over the years, people commonly associated that length of canal as being a part of the lake so it deteriorated due to lack of maintenance. The side wall had eroded into the canal; debris and

The excessive rainfall and drainage caused by Hurricane Irma exposed these problems of canal and street drainage both at the golf course and the Sautern canal. Fortunately, these areas have been marked for maintenance and improvement and needed work proceeds in our area as well as other parts of the county.

Deed Restrictions Or Private Property Rights?By Bob Oxnard, Broker/Associate, Realtor®

Is it one thing or the other? Can you have private property rights and alsohavedeedrestrictions?Doweneed someone telling us what we can and cannot do with our own property? The American dream is to own your own home. Property ownership is as American as apple pie. A man’s home is his castle. Private property and the rights of ownership are part and parcel to the ideals of living in the USA. The United States of America is a great country in large part because private citizens (not just the aristocracy) can own land. Wide distribution of land ownership haslongbeenrecognizedasbeneficialforusasanation. The preamble to the National Association of REALTORS Code of Ethics (adopted over 100 years ago) begins with, “Under all is the land. Upon its wise utilization and widely allocated ownership depend the survival and growth of free institutions and of our civilization. REALTORS should recognize that the interests of the nation and its citizens require the highest and best use of the land and the widest distribution of land ownership.” In some cases property rights can be taken from an owner without their permission. Eminent domain is a legal principle that allows private land rights to be taken for the common good. In such cases the property owner is entitled tocompensationwhilethepublicreapsbenefits. Why would someone voluntarily give up some of the rights of land ownership? Why would someone agree to deed restrictions that had expired or were not mandatory? The reason is quite simple. Deed restrictions protect property owners and their property values. Because land is not portable, location is the single most important factor in determining value. Some say location, location, location are the top three criteria! Neighboring property affects the value of your own property. If you want

Real Estate Round-Upto see homeowners in action, just try putting a pig farm, or garbage dump, or smelly chemical plant next to an established neighborhood of desirable residential homes. Protective covenants are another way to describe deed restrictions. As a Realtor, I think the term protective covenants better describes their purpose and effect. However, since we are in the process of revitalizing our deed restrictions in Whiskey Creek, I will avoid semantics and just say that renewing our deed restrictions is probably the single most important thing we can do in Whiskey Creek to protect the integrity and value of our desirable community. There are some who will be opposed to renewing deed restrictions. The cost of storing a boat or trailer out of public view may be too high for some people. Potential future home appreciation may not be enough incentive for some. Apathy or “not getting involved” will prevent some from taking action. It will take hard work from a few to make positive changes for many. What can you do to help? First of all, be informed, then get involved. Each unit in Whiskey Creek will come up with their own desired deed restrictions. They cannot be more restrictive than the original deed restrictions. Provide your input. Finally, when the time comes, vote for reinstating the deed restrictions. For more information, go to www.whiskeycreeknews.net. Email questions to [email protected] or call one of your Whiskey CreekCivicAssociation (WCCA)officers.Whileyouareat it, tell them thanks for all of their help. WCCA has been working on this positive change for years. These hardworking and dedicated volunteers are caring neighbors. WCCA is underwriting the cost and legal expenses of this process! We have a remedy for the unintended consequences of expiring deed restrictions, but the clock is ticking. The work must be completed by the end of 2019 for most units in Whiskey Creek. Please help yourself and others by saying yes when contacted by your neighbors to approve renewed deed restrictions. I firmly believe that future homeowners in Whiskey Creek will benefit from the good stewardship of today’s residents. It’s just the right thing to do! If you have any questions or comments about real estate, please contact Bob Oxnard at [email protected].

EpicuriosityRosé, Rosé, RoséBy Glenn Sudnick, Sommelier, TheSudnickWinePress.com, (772) 332-4416 Now that summer is upon us, this is a great time to enjoy rosé wines produced from all areas of the world. Maybe you will enjoy a nice pale-hued, dry rosé from Provence, France; the birthplace of French wine. Even though white and red wines are made here, 75 percent of all wine produced is rosé. These wines are made with at minimum two different grape varieties such as Cinsault, Grenache, Mouvrèdre, Syrah and even a little Tibouren. The wines are never blended between white and red, but are made using the saignée or bleeding method. The vintner starts by making

a red wine as usual. As the wine begins to take on some color from the skins the juice is drawn off to create a light rosé. T h e v i n t n e r i s always challenged as to how long the skins should stay in contact wi th the juice to create the color. So there goes the myth that the darker the rosé the sweeter the wine; definitely not true. However, we might get an idea about the body of a wine based on the depth of the color. In general lighter color wines are bright and crisp while darker wines tend to have more fruit and body. You can expect these wines to have a wide range of bouquets and flavors such as delicate white flowers and passionfruit on the nose with exotic fruits, orange peel and peach on the palate. These are great selections at the dining table when paired with seafood, sushi and Thai dishes. Not to be outshined, the rosés from Willamette Valley made from the Pinot Noir grape always leave me wanting more. These wines can be described as electric with aromas of crenshaw melon, orange peel and cranberries. We can even find bing cherry, tangerine and bubblegum in the better quality wines. But the choices of rosé do not stop there. I recently enjoyed a wine from Sancerre, France. The producer

Joseph Mellot truly delivers with this 2016 “Le Rabault” Rosé. This wine is refreshing made from Pinot Noir. It carries flavors of red cherry, orange zest and a crispness that engulfs the palate. To show you the complex world of rosé, I recommend a vibrant wine from Bekka Valley, Lebanon. The Musar Jeune 2015 made with 85 percent Cinsault and 15 percent Mourvèdre fills the glass with pomegranate, rose petals and honeysuckle. On the palate there are flavor of mandarin orange, green apples and rosewater. It is impressive; a wine you can enjoy as an apéritif with grilled shrimp marinated with oregano, sweet paprika, fresh garlic, olive oil and served with a fresh wedge of lime … and yet, I have enjoyed rosé from Italy, South Africa and Australia, Spain, California and New York. Experience the wonderful rosé s from around the world this summer. It’s the thing to do!
