COURSE INDEX

“WYKE OFFERS A TRUE ‘SIXTH FORM’ EXPERIENCE WITH HIGH QUALITY SPECIALIST TEACHING, A UNIVERSITY STYLE CAMPUS, A CULTURE THAT FOSTERS INDEPENDENCE, ENCOURAGING STUDENTS TO BE THEMSELVES.

As the largest A Level provider in Hull and East Riding, the statistics are straightforward; students do very well at Wyke Sixth Form College, with our results justifying the position in the top 15% of all Sixth Form providers nationally.

In 2019, our pass rate percentage at A Level was 99.7%, with the BTEC pass rate at 100%. This includes 315 of the top A* and A grades, 53% of the cohort achieving A*- B grades and a remarkable 82% achieving A*-C grades. Our BTEC pass rate was 100%, with 80 students achieving 3 Distinction*, the equivalent to three A*s at A Level, in comparison to 57 students in 2018.

Our students have progressed to exceptional destinations with 10 students advancing to Oxbridge and 24 taking up places on Medicine, Dentistry or Veterinary courses over the past 3 years.

I hope to help even more students make exceptional progress while studying at Wyke Sixth Form College, along with developing the wider personal qualities that ensure they truly stand out. The atmosphere here is a friendly one and expectations are high. There is little need for rules because we expect students to be self-disciplined.

Wyke is the perfect place to gain your independence, meet new people and enjoy new situations. Once at Wyke, you will be joining students from over 44 schools, spanning across Hull, East Riding and North Lincolnshire.

Please visit the College and come and meet our staff, talk to our students and f ind out about the range of experiences on offer. If you want to learn in a superb environment, being taught by A Level and BTEC specialist teachers whose sole focus is purely sixth form students, then I can guarantee Wyke Sixth Form College is the place for you.“

THE TUTOR TEAM

Every student is allocated an individual Progress Tutor who supports and guides them through their study programme over the course of their time with us.

Students are placed in a tutor group according to their year of study, and a programme of study skills, health advice, university and next steps guidance is delivered.

The Progress Tutors work closely with curriculum staff to ensure the very best level of support for our students, enabling them to be successful in all their subject choices. They also work in collaboration with university and careers coordinators, supporting students with their next steps after their time studying at the College.

Along with this, students meet with their Progress Tutor regularly on a one-to-one basis to discuss their progression and decide what will help them best in achieving their goals. The Progress Tutor team also offer pastoral support beyond the curriculum and can refer to external agencies if necessary.

LEARNING SUPPORT

The Learning Support Department offers support to any student who might need extra help. Personalised support is available for students with Education, Health and Care Plans, disabled students and those with physical health conditions and other learning needs.

We offer advice, support and guidance with time management, organisational skills and exam preparation as well as some small group and 1:1 support. We also liaise with the Exams Office to make provision for students who have been identif ied as requiring special access arrangements when taking their exams.

Learning Support staff are experienced in supporting students with a whole range of additional learning needs including Autism Spectrum Disorders, Dyslexia and hearing or visual impairments.

Where appropriate, we work in close collaboration with external agencies such as IPASS and Occupational Health to ensure that students are fully supported during their time at College and in preparation for their next steps when leaving Wyke, whatever they may be.

All Wyke students are welcome to use the quiet study areas located in Oak 3 and 4, for paired, small group and independent study. A small number of lockers are also available in this area, to students who require one for medical reasons. Lift keys and other specialised resources are also available to students who require them. Students are encouraged to come along and discuss their individual needs. .

COLLEGE COUNSELLORS

We have a confidential counselling service available that all students can access. Two qualif ied counsellors are available over three days at the College, offering onsite discrete regular counselling and one off drop in sessions.

Students can self refer via: [email protected]

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

Wyke Sixth Form College offers f inancial support through the college discretionary award. If you are eligible, the college will provide you with a travel pass or a meal allowance. You can also access f inancial assistance towards other essential college items.

Students will need to apply by completing an application form and returning this to the College along with evidence of eligibility.

Eligibility is based on levels of household income and this is reviewed each year to try to help as many students as possible.

Applications for September 2020 usually open towards the end of May, and you need to apply by 31st July 2020 to ensure that the f inancial support is in place for when you start in September.

In addition, f inancial support is available as part of the vulnerable bursary for students who are in care or are care leavers, or in receipt of certain benefits in their own right. If your parents are in receipt of certain benefits, you may also be eligible for guaranteed free meals in education.

STUDENT EXECUTIVE

“Hey everyone, we are the Student Executive for 2019/2020. As the current Student Executive, we will make sure you have your voice heard and we believe it is of the utmost importance that your opinions are acted on where possible. We want to help provide the best college experience for both the current students and staff and for the future. Our plans are extensive and can only become possible through the Student Executive.

What matters to us is that we understand what the students want and are going through on a daily basis so that we can react in the correct ways. We want to hear from you, what you want to introduce into the College.

Whether it be a new club to raising money for your favourite charity; we believe that the College experience needs to be student led.”

“I knew Wyke was the College I wanted to study at because I felt it had a much more mature and relaxed environment than other colleges. Next year, I would like to study Human, Social and Political Sciences at the University of Cambridge and my teachers and Flyers mentor have offered me additional support sessions to further develop my knowledge in these areas.”

“The independence and opportunity to meet new people was why I chose to study my A Levels at the College. I enjoyed being able to complete an EPQ as it allowed me to research and write about a topic I found interesting. Following my studies I would like to progress onto study American Studies at the University of East Anglia or Sussex.”

“My experience at Wyke has been an overwhelming success. I thought that moving from a small school to a larger college would be a daunting experience yet it wasn’t at all. Everyone is so friendly and approachable. My aim is to progress onto study Chemical Engineering at university. Flyers has provided me with so many useful skills and experiences including trips to the universities I am interested in going to.”

PATHWAY TO YOUR PROGRESSION

CAREERS GUIDANCE

During the academic year, Wyke Sixth Form College host multiple career events, from the next steps exhibitions and university speakers to sector specif ic talks with organisations. Employers come into the College and speak directly to our students about their organisation and what it is l ike working there.

Our Careers Advisors book one-to-one student appointments, drop in sessions on specif ic career elements such as f inding the right pathway for students, CV and cover letter writing, application support, interview preparation and building their portfolio.

SUPPORT WITH UNIVERSITY APPLICATION

To help students with the university application process we have a dedicated UCAS and Careers Coordinator. This support includes guidance in choosing the right course of study, the right institution and what experiences they will want to gain from university. The university process really begins in the f irst year when we introduce the next step pathways.

Built into this is Wyke’s very own Next Steps exhibition, alongside specialised course talks from a range of university providers. We ensure that all students are given the information they require to make the right, informed decision for them and their higher education journey.

PRE-MEDICAL PROGRAMME

At Wyke we recognise that applications for Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science are particularly competitive. In addition to the careers and UCAS advice in college, we offer an established programme to support students considering applying for these subjects.

Staff in the Science Department work closely with colleagues in Careers and UCAS to ensure students are well advised about their applications and receive the guidance needed to make a competitive application. Whether this is extra individual subject support to secure top grades, help locating work experience, information on how to apply to university or preparation for interview, Wyke Sixth Form College will be there at each stage of your medical career journey.

APPRENTICESHIPS AND OTHER PROGRESSION

We recognise that university is not the right option for all of our students and we have a dedicated member of staff who works closely with training providers who come into the college throughout the year to talk about apprenticeships. This includes degree apprenticeships which are becoming increasingly popular.

Employers also come in regularly to give talks about their organisation and what they are looking for in future employees.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Here at Wyke, we believe in offering work experience placements to students as there are many benefits. This could include them overcoming barriers to entering work, either through enhancing their CV, or more importantly, gaining confidence and really believing that they are adding a contribution to an organisation.

We have a Work Experience and Careers Coordinator who is here to give advice and guidance in getting the right placements for our students. They will talk through the opportunities with the student and help them understand what they want to achieve from their placement, giving suggestions on how to f ind work experience.

EMPLOYER ENGAGEMENT

We understand the importance of making our students aware of the career opportunities that are available in the region. We work with over 250 local companies and some of our key partners include BAE Systems, NHS, Arco, EY and RB. Last year we hosted an “Industry Evening” and a “Careers in Health” day to help students get ready for the world of work.

We are continually building solid and long lasting relationships with employers and work with them on a regular basis. They provide activities such as work experience and give industry talks, explaining about the company they work for along with their own career story. Our students are also given the chance to visit employers to observe and understand the workplace.

HERE AT WYKE SIXTH FORM COLLEGE, WE HAVE A CRITICAL ROLE TO PLAY IN PREPARING OUR STUDENTS FOR THEIR NEXT STEPS, WHETHER THIS IS HIGHER EDUCATION, APPRENTICESHIPS, EMPLOYMENT OR GAP YEAR OPTIONS.

Advanced Apprenticeships offer students the chance to access great training, develop skills and gain qualif ications with renowned companies. Georgia, a former Kelvin Hall School student chose this route for exactly those reasons.

Upon receiving the exceptional grades which have opened the door to a Degree Level Accounting Apprenticeship at leading f irm RSM, Georgia said:

“I am really excited to have been offered a great opportunity with a really big company. The qualif ication is similar to going to university but working, getting experience and earning money at the same time.”

“Wyke is a really good college, as today has proved with these results. My highlight would be getting these grades today as it shows that all of my hard work has paid off!”

Wyke’s specialist A Level teachers, alongside our well established Pre-Medical Programme, ensure that our students have the very best chance of progressing onto highly competitive medical schools.

This year, one of those very deserving students was Will, who, inspired by his own personal experiences, has now accepted an offer to study Medicine at the University of Lincoln.

Upon opening his results, Will said: “I didn’t expect to do this well, but I have and I am just over the moon.”

“My two years at Wyke have been great, the studying has been diff icult, but definitely rewarding. It has also been a fantastic college to come to and meet new people. This is all that I could have hoped for.”

The eyes of thousands of television viewers were on Chaelan as she opened her results live on ITV Calendar News, revealing the grades needed to secure her place at the University of London to study Pharmacy.

Chaelan came to the UK from Syria, meaning that alongside her Level 3 study, she had some additional barriers to overcome.

“I am extremely proud of my grades and that I have been able to overcome this language barrier.”

“My time at Wyke has been great. The support has been brill iant and these grades mean that I can now go on to study a degree in Pharmacy. This is a really exciting new opportunity for me.”

Former Hessle High School student Daisy Betts has secured a place to study a Degree in Dance at the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts (LIPA).

LIPA was founded by Sir Paul McCartney and Mark Featherstone-Witty in 1996 and quickly established itself as a specialist university-level provider of world class learning for performers.

This is a massive achievement for Daisy as LIPA only accept 4% of the thousands of students who apply.

“I’m so excited to have secured my place at LIPA. I love how small the year groups are as there are only around 20 in my year. I loved the auditions and the focus on choreography there. I just know it is the place for me study.”

For many of our students, Sport is a big part of their life at Wyke Sixth Form College, whether this is studying it or taking part in one of our many sporting enrichments.

For Bongani, it was the combination of the two which secured his place to study Sport and Exercise Science at Loughborough University, one of the world’s most prestigious universities for Sport. “I feel very happy to have got

into Loughborough University. I decided that it was the place I wanted to study as the facilities are great and its reputation is amazing.”

“My highlights at Wyke include playing for the Football First Team as I got some great coaching and improved a lot. I also made a lot of new friends and experienced a lot of different things, more than I would have done staying on at my school sixth form.”

Former Winifred Holtby Academy Head Girl, Millie, is now busy preparing for her move to the North West to take up a place at The University of Salford.

Over the next three years, Millie will be studying Media at a campus located next to Media City, the home of the BBC and ITV in the North of England.

Millie really enjoyed her creative courses at Wyke, especially the practical element of originating a new fashion magazine brand. It is an industry that Millie is passionate about and one day we look forward to seeing her on TV!

“I would strongly recommend choosing Media Studies and Graphic Design if you are creative like me, the courses and teachers are amazing.”

Accounting provides an excellent foundation for those wishing to pursue a career in the financial sector and for those considering starting their own business.

The course has been developed in association with the professional bodies, including CIMA and ICAEW and thus incorporates an element of both f inancial and management accounting, therefore providing a solid knowledge of the subject for those entering the accounting profession.

Accounting allows students to develop quantitative data analysis and interpretation skills, whilst the inclusion of ethics and an emphasis on management accounting will give students the confidence to communicate information to non-accountants and future clients.

Economics is a great choice for students who have an active interest in how we, as individuals and as a society, make choices.

Economics at its most fundamental is how individuals and society solve the problem of resources that are limited and the unlimited demand for them.

Most students have not studied Economics before and we do not expect previous knowledge of the subject.

You should have a genuine interest in current affairs and be confident in your numerical skills and written ability for essays. Economics is a challenging subject which is highly regarded by universities and employers.

Whilst studying this course, you will develop communication and analytical skills which will be valuable attributes for either undergraduate study or full time employment.

Students who wish to study an Art and Design related discipline at degree level are recommended to complete a Foundation course in preparation.

This programme will broaden your creative thinking and making processes, support your UCAS and portfolio application to your chosen university and enable you to mature as an independent creative practitioner.

If you are currently studying Art related subjects at Level 3 and have genuine passion, intellectual rigour and a desire to pursue a career route in an Art related area, this course will assist you in deciding upon an area of specialism and provide you with the quality of portfolio necessary to gain access to degree level study.

Photography at Wyke is aimed towards students with a keen interest in photography and lens based media.

PHILOSOPHY, ETHICS AND RELIGIOUS STUDIES 100% EXAMINATION

Sociology is the study of society and of people and their behaviour.

We question everything in our society:

• Why are there gendered subject choices in schools?

• Why do women still do more housework and childcare than men?

• Why are crimes committed by wealthy individuals ignored?

• Why is the White British population less religious today?

A Level Sociology involves a detailed analysis of British society: our families, the education system, criminal and deviant behaviour and the beliefs individuals hold.

Sociology is an engaging, thought-provoking subject, encouraging you to think differently about your life experiences.

You will develop your skills of critical thinking, evaluation and essay writing.

A Level Sociology is 100% examination. You will sit three 2 hour exam papers at the end of the course. The exams are essay-based, so a love of reading and writing is essential.

Sociology opens doors to a range of careers including teaching, law, social work, journalism, civil service and the police.

A Level Sociology goes well with other social science/humanities subjects including; Psychology, Criminology, History, Government and Politics and Religious Studies.

SOCIOLOGY100% EXAMINATION

The Criminology course is an excellent choice for anyone with an interest in criminal behaviour and the impact of criminality. The course investigates the theories behind criminality and why individuals engage in criminal activity. Students will be invited to explore the impact criminality has upon society.

Complementary options studied alongside Criminology although not exclusively are, Psychology, Sociology, Law, History and Government and Politics.

The course can lead to a wide range of career opportunities and opens up a study path at university in subjects such as Criminology, Criminal Psychology, Law and Sociology.

Philosophy, Ethics and Religious Studies is a course designed to stimulate your intellect and broaden your horizons. During your studies, you will develop your ability to produce coherent academic essays, as well as to articulate logical and convincing arguments of your own.

The subject aims to teach you essential academic skills such as analysis, evaluation and critical thinking.

Philosophy, Ethics and Religious Studies asks you to ponder some important questions within modern society, it is a highly critical and engaging subject. Good reading and writing skills are essential components for succeeding on this course.

*This course will be certif ied as A Level Religious Studies

Psychology is a great choice if you have a genuine interest in learning a scientif ic approach to understanding human behaviour.

Although Psychology is a fascinating subject, it demands a thorough, logical and rigorous understanding of methodology which can be used to evaluate human behaviour. Most of our students have not studied GCSE Psychology at school but many of our students go on to study Psychology at university. The content of the course is varied and tries to answer questions such as, ‘Why do some people obey more readily than others?’,

‘Are the brains of murderers different?’ and ‘What is schizophrenia and how can it be treated?’

Psychology works well with Sociology, Criminology, Biology, PE, Business and Economics, to name but a few. There are many options regarding careers – you could complete further study and become a clinical, educational or sports psychologist. Many psychology graduates become counsellors or are involved in social work in some way. In addition, Psychology is well respected by large organisations and businesses.

History is a very popular subject, for it appeals greatly to students seeking to develop their analytical skills, and those who wish to appreciate how the modern world evolved.

History influences our lives in so many more ways than people consider, and this course – covering twentieth century American History, India’s Struggle for Independence from 1914 to 1948, and British Experience of Warfare from 1793 to 1918 – provides a f irm foundation of historical understanding.

A Level History is for students who wish to expand their critical thinking, and who are

keen to marvel and debate the events and circumstances which shaped the modern world. History is a perfect accompaniment to all of the humanitarian subjects, and is a popular choice for students who love History and have aspirations in law, civil service, the media, heritage, military, police and business management – to name a few among many career paths.

This A Level is a recognised facilitating subject for a wide range of undergraduate courses. It is also an ideal enabling subject for students with ambitions to be considered for Oxbridge and Russell Group universities.

The Government and Politics A Level is designed to encourage interest in, and enthusiasm for, the comparative study of British and American politics. It enables students to develop an insight into political beliefs central to an understanding of the modern world.

Through debate and reflection of the ever-evolving political environment in the UK and the USA, students will learn valuable core knowledge and understanding of politics through the nurturing and honing of oratorical and written analytical skills in order to succeed in this course.

Consider whether any of these issues resonate with you: how Britain and the USA are governed; current affairs around the world; who makes the political decisions, and why; what is democracy, and why is it important; how much are civil l iberties protected in democratic societies; how and why people vote; how pressure groups work; whether the UK should remain unif ied or devolve; and why is Brexit taking so long. If you are interested in understanding more on these key issues, and debating them with fellow students to further deepen your political understanding, then this is the course for you.

An essential part of Mathematics is the challenge of analysing and solving a problem and the satisfaction and confidence gained from achieving a ‘correct’ answer. However, a big difference between GCSE and A Level is the depth of knowledge and understanding needed. If you want to understand why, rather than just being able to “do” Mathematics, then through A Level Maths your depth of knowledge and understanding will grow.

A Level Maths is assessed with 3 exams in Pure, Statistics and Mechanics and these are taken after your 2 years on the course. They will be different to what you faced in GCSE as they will test a lot more of your understanding.

A Level Maths is a good course to be taken alongside most other A Levels as it helps students to develop their problem solving skills. This is one of the key reasons it is strongly recommended for a wide range of university courses.

Mathematics is for everyone. It is essential that students are equipped with the right skills to reach their future destination, whatever that may be.

This course is for you if you want to continue your Mathematics beyond GCSE level, and are keen to develop your skills in context, not wanting to take a course which requires the deep understanding of algebra required for A Level Mathematics.

This course is designed for students who enjoy applying mathematics and are comfortable with number work and basic algebra. It is designed to broaden your mathematical knowledge, developing skills which support a range of other courses and devising strategies to solve problems where the method is not obvious.

Communication skills are important to evaluate the reasonableness of solutions, identifying assumptions and explaining results.

In particular, the course is highly suitable for students who are taking A Levels which rely on an understanding of mathematical techniques (Geography, Science, Economics, Accounting), and who wish to go on to study courses at university which require a level of Mathematics beyond GCSE such as Economics or Psychology.

ENGINEERING67% EXAMINATION 33% COURSEWORK

Engineering is exciting, rewarding and creative. If you are analytical, imaginative and innovative, have a passion for problem solving and a keen eye for detail then this course is for you.

If your future goal is to study engineering at university or to go on to an apprenticeship then the Cambridge Technical in Engineering is an ideal course for you. The essential parts of becoming any engineer is your understanding of both Mathematics and Science and because of this they are central in this course.

In the f irst year of the course you will have three units. Two of the units look at the Maths and the Science in engineering and these will be assessed with an external exam. The other unit will look at producing CAD engineering drawings which us assessed internally.

This course is aimed at students who are good at Maths and Physics and so A Level Maths and A Level Physics would be ideal to take alongside this options course.

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Certif icate in Digital Music Production will teach the technology of computer music including; sequencing, audio manipulation, MIDI composition, mixing and mastering techniques and re-mixing.

The BTEC is open to students who are less familiar with reading sheet music but admission is nevertheless by audition or portfolio submission only, since the subject still requires a strong sense of musicality. Key indicators for eligibility are likely to be: - A portfolio of compositions made in

a DAW (Cubase, ProTools, Logic, FL or Garage Band);

- Grade 3 or above equivalent on an instrument;

- Being able to read traditional sheet music to some extent e.g. treble or bass clef.

Auditioning for the course is an informal process and involves a short quiz and practical task guided by a music technology teacher. Audio or video evidence of performing on an instrument or past compositions are good ways to effectively demonstrate your suitability for the course. This process will happen as part of Wyke Start.
